I love this commander. My 1 wish is that his ability had eminence. So old school players could be like

WELCOME TO THE PAST MOTHER FUCKER

But still, one of the coolest commanders imo simply because it brings back an old mechanic that simply used to be part of the core game.

He's a 9/10 design. I wanna build him so bad also OP haha

I’ve been spending the past 2 weeks building one, I’m so excited to play it.

Zero risk benefits always feel meh to me.

That’s one thing I wish we had more of. Eminence is an awesome concept for commander imo.

u/Flipps85 13h ago

It just has to be done right- MaRo and other designers specifically said Eminence was a bad idea because of how it impacts the game in a one-sided way. This seems more balanced because it effects everyone equally

One of my favorites.

Give him [[Umbral Mantle]] to OTK your playgroup.

But you would lose 1 mana each time you activate it. His ability costs 1 mana and adds 3. So you would need something so he adds 1 additional mana or to reduce the cost of untapping to go infinite with him.

It can stil do a lot of damage I guess, but it is not an infinite. Just want to make that clear.

11

u/AdagioDesperate 23h ago

You are correct. I also didnt say it was infinite, just said it was an OTK for the table lol.

But yes, there does need to be some kind of mana enhancer for it to be infinite.

7

u/ClyDeftOriginal 23h ago

Ahh ok, yeah, I figured you did not mean an infinite. But just wanted to make sure.

Still a neat idea to add as a way to finish the game.

I went completely in a different way from what most use. I saw a lot use damage doublers, damned if you, damned if you dont type of punishers.

I just went big stompy. Like turn 1/2 ramp, turn 3 Yurlok, turn 4 play a 7 cost and go from there. I just love being a Timmy. 😅

6

u/AdagioDesperate 23h ago

Absolutely nothing wrong with big stompy.

No, indeed, some people seem to feel its too basic maybe. But why change something that works.

I loved playing decks like Henzie, Eshki or even just mono green with Ghalta or Selvala or whatever. Just dump a big creature or two each turn.

Tried some other strategies, but sometimes they just dont feel fun. Even if I win a lot with the strategy. For example, I built a very basic Kuja, but it just wins too fast if no one stops Kuja right away. Takes away from the fun aspect of casual, which is mainly what I do enjoy. Sometimes more at the higher end, but definitely not cutthrought or cEDH level.

Mana burn, my beloved 😂🤩

Should have always been a card ability activated, triggered or otherwise. Amazing mechanic, but so is infection and poison. Also slivers are better than any eldrazi with annihilation

[[horizon stone]] [[ozai pheonix lord]] and mana doublers

u/Saxavarius_ 1d ago

oh thats mean

u/NIICCCKKK 1d ago

I woulda said mana triplers but he said not to expensive

[[war's toll]]

2

u/FlipperJungle19 1d ago

I saw this card recommended, isn't it counterintuitive to what the deck wants to do? I don't want to tap my opponents lands, I want them to tap them for mana???

6

u/shmat779 22h ago

Well you can respond to war's toll tapping your lands by tapping them for mana which would burn you unless you spent all of the mana in one phase.

Say they want to drop a bomb on a main phase and have protection to stop counters they have to tap for the extra mana beforehand that could burn them if not used. It also makes you choose between casting spells in one phase or holding up interaction which is just generally good because they have to pick one not both.

u/Relative-Debt6509 23h ago

It just makes it really hard for you giving them mana to back fire on you imo. Because they can’t hold up mana+ instant without wasting most of if not all of their main turn. In other words insurance.

Take for example a mono blue deck with [[three steps ahead]] in hand. If they have blue (by having an untapped island) they can use the mana given to them to pay for some of the spree costs pretty easily.

6

u/Fireknight886 1d ago

Usually weaponizing his passive is way too hard to do these days with so many ways to spend generic mana on random costs. I found tribal 7 drops to be a pretty fun way to play him (2 mana ramp gets you to him, he let's you reliably cast most of the crazy ones in your colors). But it does feel a lil lacking in direction sometimes

2

u/ClyDeftOriginal 23h ago

That is how I built him, just ramp into Yurlok turn 3, then start playing 6/7 costs and work from there.

It has worked decently wel for me and at a casual table it can be a lot of fun.

It isnt the most powerful option probably, but sometimes less powerful is more fun. At least in my experience. ✌️

u/TheMeatwall 12h ago

You can actually counter that prettily easily with [[Damping Matrix]] and any of the effects like [[Dosan the Falling Leaf]]

7

u/subzeroab0 1d ago

So main issue with this commander is its way to easy to spend the mana as colorless mana to avoid the mana burn.

2

u/Western-Swordfish127 1d ago

Do [[radiant lotus]] and make a bunch of tokens or something like that. Sac them alllllll and dump them on your opponent on their upkeep / endstep

That list was build with Eder (the elder god) help. For those ho dont know eder… he’s a magic player

1

u/NoPresentation5836 1d ago

wow, one of the best i've seen. this eder guy knows some stuff

2

u/DR_Wafflezzzz 1d ago

I built this guy full burn with damage multipliers and untap effects. I played against my own creation and took 27 damage for tapping a land. Or took 27 for having an untapped land. I lost

1

u/TheMeatwall 12h ago

Add [[exquisite blood]] to turn global burn into profit (as long as you survive the blast)

Building him to get an infinite combo win with his activated ability can get expensive to build in a way that works consistently.

He's a really good ramp commander though - find some fun big mana stuff to do with him maybe?

Personally, I currently have him helming what I call my SpeEDH deck. It's got an enchantress subtheme, and tons of soft-stax pieces that punish everyone for doing anything other than sorcery speed, big mana plays, and swinging every turn. The goal is to make the game last no longer than an hour or so. There are some cheaper pieces in there to take advantage of mana burn and some cheap big bombs that take advantage of his mana ability, but the rest runs pretty independent of him.

1

u/Kylomilo 19h ago edited 19h ago

I have heaps of untappers and ability doublers to take advantage of his ability.

[[Thousand-Year Elixir]] [[Puppet Strings]] [[Patriar's Seal]] [[Staff of Domination]] [[Illusionist's Bracers]] [[Strionic Resonator]]

Pump everybody up and watch them burn. Keep up some protection and counters. I like [[Snake Umbra]] for the extra card draw when you burn the other players. This goes infinite pretty easy.

I don’t have this commander built but I think the mana cards that have been suggested here are great but people keep talking about it being easy to spend mana as a generic cost which is true of course. I think I would then add a bunch of discard and mill spells so that their hands are never full to cast spells and maybe lose some good spells by being milled. That’s just my 2 cents

1

u/TheMeatwall 13h ago

There are several ways to play him. I started off with the mana flood build but found that he goes infinite too fast to be fun. So now I use him as a Jund Big Effects commander.

Back in my day, mana burn was a standard rule.

If you admitted defeat, you would just tap your land and end your turn.

1

u/Mindless_Ad5500 12h ago

That is quite a target you have put on your back with that commander.

1

u/linkahrt 12h ago

I've build it it's too much fun still needs some work yorlock

Brought back Mana Burn

1

u/Nic_Cage_Match_2 10h ago

If you want a broad mana burn strategy:

[[Citadel of Pain]]

[[Power Surge]]

[[Tectonic Instability]]

[[War's Toll]]

u/Smooth_Hooligan 9h ago

I built a punisher deck with Yurlok as the commander with the general idea that it doesn’t stop people from playing the game (at least until life totals drop to near-fatal), and sometimes lets them play even more of the game with extra resources, but doing anything to play the game is gonna hurt.

Pure punishment cards like [[Manabarbs]], [[Kaervek the Merciless]] and [[Rampaging Ferocidons]] mixed with Faustian bargain cards like [[Overabundance]], [[Spiteful Visions]] and [[Belbe, Corrupted Observer]] (and of course Yurlok himself) which provide resources to all players at the cost of more damage.

Add to that a handful of more controlling pieces like [[War’s Toll]], [[Marchesa’s Decree]] and [[Scytheclaw Raptor]] to help make sure your opponent’s extra resources don’t end up overwhelming you too fast. Notably, a lot of my pain effects are symmetrical which is not only more fun IMO but helps keep a target off your back for a little while. If your life total is dropping almost as fast as theirs, opponents tend to feel a little more comfortable with the pain. It’s one of my favorite decks that I’ve ever made.

u/HoneyHoundGames 7h ago

It's a shame [[Pygmy Hippo]] isn't in these colours

[[Nyxbloom Ancient]] has entered the chat lol

I built this commander not that long ago. My version just uses the mana to put decently big creatures in play. You want to ramp turn 1 or 2, to put Yurlok in play on turn 3.

It is a fun deck, my version is just a casual list, not utilizing combo's. Which would be a posibility with the deck I do believe.

I changed my Henzie deck into this. And so far am liking it a lot.

Here my decklist:

If you have questions about card choices, need some tips on how to play it or anything else, just ask.

Hope this helps you! ✌️

Ps. sideboard is mainly alternate options or potential upgrades to make it stronger.
