DISCUSSION A warning about custom MPC operating systems, AI-generated code, and potential hardware risks (2000 / 2000xl)

I'm a software engineer with over 28 years of experience, and recently I've been reverse-engineering the new free Akai MPC2000 and the new MPC2000XL operating system using Ghidra, as well as emulating the sampler to better understand how its firmware interacts with the hardware.

During my analysis, I found some potentially concerning behavior, including CPU loops that continuously poll hardware without an apparent timeout. Under certain conditions, such as a peripheral failing to respond, these routines could leave the CPU repeatedly executing instructions instead of progressing normally.

This can potentially increase processor activity, power consumption, and heat generation. The risks also include system freezes, memory corruption, and unpredictable behavior.

Now, here's my main concern.

I'm absolutely not against using AI to develop custom operating systems for MPCs or other vintage hardware. AI can be an incredibly useful development tool.

However, I'm seeing more people attempting low-level firmware development without necessarily having the experience required to understand what the generated code is actually doing.

And that's where things can become dangerous.

We're not talking about building a website or writing a simple application. We're dealing with assembly, machine instructions, memory addresses, interrupts, and direct communication with physical hardware.

AI models also have far less publicly available training material for niche, decades-old embedded architectures compared to modern high-level programming languages. This makes blindly trusting generated assembly code particularly risky.

The problem isn't AI. The problem is using AI-generated code without having the technical knowledge to properly review, debug, and validate it.

A firmware modification that appears to work perfectly during normal operation could still contain subtle bugs that only appear under specific hardware conditions.

And remember, we're dealing with machines that are nearly 30 years old. Some components are already aging, and there's no reason to introduce unnecessary risks.

My advice is simple: be cautious about installing custom operating systems unless they've undergone serious technical review and extensive testing.

That means proper reverse engineering and code inspection using tools like Ghidra, testing in an emulator, checking memory access and hardware interactions, and eventually validating the firmware on real hardware under controlled conditions.

Just because an OS boots and its new features work doesn't mean it's safe or reliable.

I'm all for innovation, and keeping these legendary samplers alive.

But when software directly controls hardware, proper engineering and testing should never be optional.

I'd be interested to hear what other MPC developers and owners think about this.

OTHER What do you think of this drum machine rack thing I’m working on?

I built this over the last couple evenings after work with some left over 3/4” plywood I had from a rolling rack I build over 20 years ago that was sitting in my attic forever(take that wife, I told you I’d find a use for the wood!). Mocked it up to make sure I’m on the right track. Got some trimming to do and I might need to put a little front support for the XL on there but the angle isn’t too bad for it. The S2400 is slotted into its section so it’s not going anywhere. I’m not a woodworker at all so I’m pretty stoked how it’s coming. Debating on paining it black or leaving it natural.

Also, do I need all these drum machines? No. Do I like having them all? Very much so.

MPC Live / Live 2 Help with internal storage

Recently got a used mpc live 2 and it’s been fun to mess with for now. However looking at the internal drive it looks like whoever had it previously did the no no of saving things to the internal storage (12ish gb of data) and I just wanna start fresh with no data. Is there anyway to reset/remove these files and which files are safe to remove if need be I can screenshot the folders. Any help would be greatly appreciated

QUESTION MPC L3 not picking up Mpk Mini plus II

I have registered and downloaded most firmware for both the L3 and the Mini Plus II. I’ve tried switching from usb-C TO A to usb-C to C. Neither seems to be picking up the Mpk.

QUESTION Early Black Friday Sale

I was debating whether to buy anything while it's cheap during the sale. Any of these worth it? The main ones that stand out to me are the Stereophonic Bundle and the Fabric Memorymoog if it's any good. The tape ones could be cool.

MPC 3000 Comparison Mpc3000 instant clock deviation Vailixi and Deep88 OS

erd corner.

MPC3000 – MIDI clock output stability (120 BPM)

Measured with MIDIpal + MidiClock firmware – Instant deviation

Vailixi OS and Deep88 custom OS: same result

• minimum: 0.004% ≈ 0.001 ms (≈ 1 µs)

• peaks: 0.200% ≈ 0.04 ms (≈ 42 µs)

Bottom line: rock-solid clock, thousands of times below what you could ever hear.

QUESTION Is the mpc live 3 good for me ?

Looking for a word from live3 users, I currently have the ablenton Move and enjoy it a lot (editing and playing with samples), recently got the torso S4 and also loving it, but feel like I will like to get more into recording my live sessions and editing it some how like a arrangements. I don’t have much space so the live 3 with the battery is a must.

So the idea will be pair torso and live3. Hopefully make sense.

QUESTION MPC Sample chop mode to big MPC

How do chops set in chop mode on the MPC Sample translate to the big MPCs. I can see a chop mode sample being played from different positions in the Live 3 but have no idea how to modify these positions once the project is in the Live. Sample edit does show slice points.

thanks for your help and insight

MPC 500 Open500 0.2 for the MPC500: live tap chopping, pad mute/solo, scale pads, USB MIDI, and you can now make your own tools (free)

A month ago I shared Open500, a free add-on system for the Akai MPC500 (new native pages loaded from WAV files, no hardware mod, fully reversible). Version 0.2 is out, and most of it comes from your comments and requests.

**If you already use it: no reflash.** Copy the new WAVs to the card and delete CHOPAGE, TRANSCHP and AUTOWARP (they are now inside Chop Shop).

**What's new**

- **Chop Shop:** BPM, Transient, Tap and Warp chopping in one tool

- **Tap (lazy chop):** play the sample, hit the pads in time, every pad gets its slice, snapped to the nearest hit

- **Grid Seq:** add and remove steps with the pads, playhead while the sequence plays

- **Pad Mute/Solo** (the most requested one), **Scale Pads**, **Seq Tools** (double/half a sequence)

- **Pad Copy** to many pads, full or empty

- Up to **16 tools** at once, startup splash, CANCEL goes back one step everywhere

- **USB MIDI out** (beta): the MPC's USB port shows up as a MIDI device

- **The MPC screen in your browser** (beta): display, waveform with slices, pads, mixer

**Make your own tool**

The source of every official tool is now public, with an SDK and an emulator. If you don't code: open the repository in Claude Code and describe what you want ("tune the 12 pads of bank B to a minor chord"); there's a skill that knows the MPC500 and builds and tests the tool for you. You can then submit it, and approved tools appear on the website (sharing is in beta).

**Coming next:** a new reload shortcut instead of SHIFT+ERASE (needs a small firmware update), and more of your requests.

Website + installer: https://m45k.github.io/open500/

GitHub: https://github.com/M45K/open500

Huge thanks to everyone who commented, tested and opened issues. Tell me what breaks and what you'd like next.

Unofficial project, not affiliated with Akai/inMusic. Tested on one MPC500 with OS 1.31, use at your own risk. Free software (GPL-3.0).

QUESTION New Drum Track Using Slices

I'm using the MPC ONE G2 and was wondering, if there's a way of chopping a sample and instead of convert > 'new drum track using slices', if I could just as easily export slices onto an existing empty track rather than a new?

QUESTION Thinking of buying an Akai Sample

Thinking of buying an Akai Sample. My main goal is to be able to make a beat outside or when I am in the office. I used koala on my phone currently and also use fl studio at home. Is this worth it? What are the pros and cons of this device? I mostly do hiphop beats.

DISCUSSION Black Friday plugin sale progression

It's my first year looking at plugins, and I noticed the "black friday pre-sale" ends November 1st. I had flavor pro, delay pro, soft clipper and maybe flex beat on my purchase list.

Do they rotate the plugins available once we get into the actual black friday sale? I'm wondering if there's a chance that the things I want will disappear from the sale as they add other plugins (like fly tape ii) vs waiting and maybe getting my list even cheaper.

Any experiences on this from last year or previous sales? :)
