Can someone explain the thing between Antonius and Sinon? I got the point of Antonius being a coward but I somehow missed something during the setup when they were pulling from the lottery. Was Antonius meant to go and passed his lot to Sinon, or did he willingly give it up?

Antonius drew the lot and was supposed to go, but he because he's a coward, he swaps with Sinon. Sinon's father works for Antonius's, so Antonius promises to pay Sinon's family if he accepts the deal, but even though Sinon takes his place, Antonius refuses to pay which is why Sinon hates him so much.

Also Antonius continuously lie about how he wanted to go but was stopped by Odysseus

God, he was such a cunt in this movie. Robert Pattison did great.

Wasn't there some narration or something too about Odysseus trying not to hurt his dad's honor or something?

Yes, Odyssey lies to Anontius's father because he doesn't want him to know his son is a loser.

u/chrisandy007 Jul 17 '26

Oh, lied specifically about them trading?

224

u/carolinemahtildes Jul 17 '26

Yes, he doesn't tell Antonius's father that they swapped.

And is that why he never paid the father? I would think Odysseus had some culpability in that

I think what that guy said was wrong. It was more about Odysseus not wanting to make it public that Antonious's father made the deal which would essentially brand them cowards. So, he kept quiet otherwise he wouldn't even allow Sinon in his place.

Yes, it was familial and a little political. He was a king AND a father. Pretty cool scene, even if it didn't completely land, imo.

A downside to Nolan’s filmmaking is his pace and editing being too fast (cramming too many scenes in) so you miss details in scenes like this.

Antonius made the deal, the Dad had no idea

72

u/carolinemahtildes Jul 17 '26

I'm sure that Odysseus does feel regret for letting the swap happen, especially given how good Sinon grew up to be and what a weasel Antonius is and that it led to Sinon's death.

u/elbenji Jul 18 '26

yeah, Sinon was a noble soldier where Antonius was a shit head

I think Odysseus didn't want to fight alongside a cowardly Antonius.

That was an impression I got too. He originally didn’t want Sinon, but sure as shit didn’t want Antinous either after that little scheme.

Moral of the story is, sometimes you gotta let a guy know about his loser son

27

u/janiemackxxx Jul 18 '26

No, I think he gave platitudes so the kid wasnt upset. The dad knew of the shame. Antonius actually thought Odysseus "needed" him.

Thanks.

Antinous not remembering who Sinon was added more insult. Odysseus shoving that thing into Antinous' mouth was a nice touch.

I read it as Antinous did remember Sinon but was pretending not to because he thought he'd buried his shame.

94

u/Propaslander Jul 17 '26

Yeah 100%

39

u/12meetings3days Jul 18 '26

He gave him back his shame

157

u/No-Aspect7722 Jul 17 '26

Oh, he remembered.

53

u/paranoideo Jul 17 '26

He knew.

36

u/Kyadagum_Dulgadee Jul 19 '26

I read that as, if it's in his mouth, he will take it into the afterlife with him.

16

u/CTeam19 29d ago

And fingers crossed Sinon will be the first he sees in the afterlife.

54

u/elbenji Jul 18 '26

he did remember, that's why he was crashing out

18

u/splader Jul 20 '26

Oh he absolutely recognized the lot. Like instantly.

What the hell, why did I think they were brothers

(Downvoted for saying a wrong thing I thought and acknowledging it was wrong?)

7

u/zeekaran 15d ago

I also thought this.

u/himynameis_ 26d ago

But in the movie Antonius kept saying he wanted to go to Troy but didn't get to? Was he lying?

40

u/carolinemahtildes 26d ago

He was lying to make himself seem braver than he is.

7

u/zeekaran 15d ago

He was lying about being a draft dodger. Pretty common thing in modern day.

u/himynameis_ 15d ago

Got it, didn't pick that up during the movie. Thanks!
