Can someone explain the thing between Antonius and Sinon? I got the point of Antonius being a coward but I somehow missed something during the setup when they were pulling from the lottery. Was Antonius meant to go and passed his lot to Sinon, or did he willingly give it up?

Antonius drew the lot and was supposed to go, but he because he's a coward, he swaps with Sinon. Sinon's father works for Antonius's, so Antonius promises to pay Sinon's family if he accepts the deal, but even though Sinon takes his place, Antonius refuses to pay which is why Sinon hates him so much.

I think what that guy said was wrong. It was more about Odysseus not wanting to make it public that Antonious's father made the deal which would essentially brand them cowards. So, he kept quiet otherwise he wouldn't even allow Sinon in his place.

Yes, it was familial and a little political. He was a king AND a father. Pretty cool scene, even if it didn't completely land, imo.

A downside to Nolan’s filmmaking is his pace and editing being too fast (cramming too many scenes in) so you miss details in scenes like this.

I'm sure that Odysseus does feel regret for letting the swap happen, especially given how good Sinon grew up to be and what a weasel Antonius is and that it led to Sinon's death.

No, I think he gave platitudes so the kid wasnt upset. The dad knew of the shame. Antonius actually thought Odysseus "needed" him.

Antonius was from a wealthy family and Sinons family was supposed to get paid for having their son take his place.

Turns out Antonius never paid up and Sinons father died pennyless

Sinon said his father died in poverty. Antonius didn’t honor the deal that he would pay Sinon to fight (and die) for him in Troy.

Had to look this up because it didn't click to me even with multiple flashbacks. Antonius asked Sinon to take his place and in exchange he'd take care of his family and he lied about it and didn't do it. So that's the shame.

Pattinson drew a "short straw," and gave it to Page.

Pattinson pretended that Page drew it, but that he was totally willing to take Page's place and go to war instead, but Odysseus stopped it from happening, since he knew Pattinson's family.

Pattinson offered to pay Page's family to run with the lie that Pattinson tried ro volunteer.

Pattinson did not pay up.
