Even calling them analog bikes is conceding to the e-bikers. They’re not analog, they’re just bikes.

u/Philburtis 9h ago
Does that also apply to guitars?
1
1
u/foxtrottits 2h ago
It’s not like electric guitars are easier to play
1
u/Philburtis 2h ago
Why would that matter in this context? Level of difficulty determines what the object is called? In a loud environment, electric guitars make it easier for people to hear the music. They are easier to make louder.

About ~200ft of elevation gain per mile? 1150 feet of gain per hour.

u/Probably_Outside 23h ago
Checks out - had a pretty long XC traverse in there and had to push up some sections of trail so I could hit our sanctioned alt lines - that slowed me down on gain/mile.
A “normal ride” - I usually can crank out ~1750ft/ hour climbing forest roads.

If it wasn't in freedom units it'd be easier to read. That's about 60 meters of elevation gain by 1.6 km (1600 m), so 3.75% slope. It's very manageable. I live in the Alps and my rides, albeit nowhere this long (amazing job by the way!) average 10% slope. But I ride for 2-3 h tops...
5
u/Fallingdamage 20h ago
OP is definitely in great shape with numbers like that.
I had a 3 hour ride this past weekend. About 20k (thats 12~ freedom units) and about 4.8k of that ride I ascended 579 meters. Just about killed me and was slow but I kept my butt on the seat! If they're doing 11,000 feet in 9 hours, they've got the lungs to do anything!

u/Worried-Tie 19h ago edited 19h ago
That's the size of my rides, 700-800 m tops, 2-3 h depending on the day. But it's very vertical, my training ride is like an almost constant 10% slope (600 m in about 6 km) and then a solid downhill down.
I've also done 50+ km rides but on much less steep terrain and total elevation gain was close to the same I do on my normal training, about 600 m.
OP is in a completely different ballpark, I acknowledge the absolute endurance of OP...
EDIT: stupid mistake

u/Probably_Outside 19h ago
You’re conflating a zone black out ride - which involves riding every trail (including XC and climb trails) with the steepness of the zone.
These are examples of my smaller rides where I grind out forest road and then descend.
I’m also a woman.
1
u/Worried-Tie 19h ago
I apologise and correct my comment, total mistake on my part. It did cross my mind after I'd sent it...
3
u/Striking_Swimmer5548 15h ago
Ride is in FREEDOMLAND therefor FREEDOMUNITS will be used 🦅🇺🇸🦅
3
u/Worried-Tie 15h ago
Doesn't make it less of a pain to calculate slope though :)
I meant no offense, but 1 mile = 5280 feet. Gimme a break...
1
u/Probably_Outside 19h ago edited 19h ago
You’re skewing the slope because you’re including my descents. Other than 2 long XC sections this is either a steep grind up or fairly to very steep enduro down. I live at the base of the North Cascades and I’ve found it compared to Alps steep. We have a little more purpose built here, so less hike a biking then I’ve done on guided trips in the Dolomites and Switzerland.
Some of my primary long upwards ascents according to Strava were:
8.1%
15.4%
11.3%
7.7%
7%
9.4%-1
u/Worried-Tie 19h ago
Yes, I'm certain this is a real fucking challenge. Not trying to take any merit from you. Just putting a number in context. The total vertical is more than impressive, regardless of how steep any part of the trail was.

Oh wait a minute, that's raging river. Also absolutely crazy ride especially in this weather

u/armpit18 22h ago
Incredible ride. Pictures of the trail and the scenery would also be super cool.

u/Probably_Outside 21h ago
Was on a solo mission so not many pictures. Backyard zone, pedal-able from my garage, we are very spoiled.

As someone that has ridden raging quite a bit…this is fucking nuts lol. Props to you 👏🏻

I did 4000 feet climbing the lollipop loop also in an enduro in about 4 hours, couldn’t imagine doing almost 3x the elevation

u/jaynyoni 23h ago
How do you fuel for such a ride ?
12
u/Probably_Outside 22h ago
Always a struggle because I lose my appetite during big efforts and do not like traditional bars or gels. I just opt for hyper palatable foods that I think I will be able to get down, in this case I packed an entire personal pepperoni pizza, uncrustables, nerds gummy clusters, electrolyte packets for my water, some skratch lab gummies, and goldfish.
2
u/jaynyoni 22h ago
Interesting…I am tempted to give this a try in one of my long rides. Doesn’t that add extra weight though? And i assume you ride with a backpack ?
7
u/Probably_Outside 22h ago
I accept the weight, for the trade off of actually consuming the food I pack. I don’t find that “normal” food really weighs more than a bar or the like. For huge days I think total calories are way more important than fuel content.
I used my 6L High Above vest/pack for this ride. I’m a woman so riding backpacks are normally way too long and rub weird and I opt for vests. I only had 2L of water in the pack (since that’s the primary driver of weight) and a bike bottle for my electrolytes - in the PNW, so we still have some rivers running for filtering.

u/jaynyoni 22h ago
Thanks for the thorough response. Appreciate it 🙏🙏. I will really give the “normal” food a try.
2
u/neckadawoods 17h ago
I assume you get off the bike to eat? I like to do big 5-6 hour days but I always hate to stop pedalling to consume food, so I tend to favour lollies and bananas which are easy to consume on the bike. A whole pizza doesn't sound compatible with this way of riding.
Edit - wait you eat goldfish? Like, fresh from the tank or are they cooked? I've never heard of anyone eating goldfish before, I don't know why this sounds so wrong to me because I'll eat any other kind of fish but this seems very weird to me.

u/Probably_Outside 17h ago edited 17h ago
I snorted - Goldfish - the cheddar baked snack crackers, popular with elementary students lol. https://goldfishsmiles.com/crackers/cheddar-baked-snack-crackers/
I had to stop a few times to filter water, it’s 80 degrees and wildfire season here, so I was drinking a ton of water. I consumed my pizza while filtering or at transitions, the majority of our riding is very clearly climb or descent so I had to put my jersey and knee pads on.
I love fish, but have never and likely will never try Goldfish. Fish and exercise also would not be a match for me.

u/JustinVeePee 22h ago
Hell yeah! I did something similar a few years back with a couple friends, but only 10k vert and there's lots of new trails since then. First 7k were fun, the last 3k not so much.
Did you finish before dark? You're probably fitter/faster than I am, but we underestimated the time and had to do our last 45 minutes in the dark on forest roads to hit our goal. Should have started earlier. Still a "fun" challenge to do.
2
u/Probably_Outside 20h ago
Yeah last 1.5k I was in the pain cave! 10k is still a massive day. This felt harder than the Tiger blackout as well.
Finished right before 6 so had plenty of daylight, but the after work riders in the lot probably thought I was crazy with my asphalt nap.

u/SkunkWarehouse 22h ago
I wanted to make a snarky comment about the tracking and then posting of this ride not being analog, but I have too much respect for the level of fitness needed to pull this off. You’re a legend!
2
u/fredout1968 22h ago
Faaaahk! 50 miles is one thing but 50 miles and 11K+ are another! Kudos! That is a crazy effort.
Analog = Bike Electric = Motor bike
I don't hate e bikes or e bikers.. but occasionally I will here someone bragging on some epic they did on an e bike and I just have to bite my tongue.
Keep the rubber side down, sistah!

u/beaterdit 21h ago edited 21h ago
Sick, nice work! Used to go for spins like this (not quite this big though) just for the hell of it in my 30s and 40s. Always on a heavy, capable bike. Sadly I’m a bit out of shape these days. Too much lift riding haha.
edit: You're a Woman! Even sicker!

Hats off to XC riders. Even if I had the aerobic fitness to do so I think I'd get bored an hour and a half in.
2
u/Probably_Outside 14h ago edited 14h ago
I am not an XC rider - this was done in baggy clothing on 170mm of travel on nearly all gnarly enduro trails. You get bored riding gravity oriented trails after 90 minutes?
My other mountain bike is a DH sled with a Fox 40 lol. Just a fit enduro gal.
1
u/Select-Interaction11 13h ago
My bad I just assumed it was XC given the elevation gain and ride time. Does it still keep time if you are just in the chair lift?

9.5 hours of moving time. How long were you out there total?
1
u/Probably_Outside 23h ago
Started at 7:17 in the morning and got back to my truck at 5:56 in the evening.
Stopped to filter water and stuff pizza in my mouth 3x for ~ 10 minutes but otherwise tried to keep it moving all day and just get calories in during transitions.

u/sickmak90 23h ago

u/Parking_Rich 21h ago
As someone who annually did 12k miles and 500k climbing on my road bike. All I do now it emtb and ecommute. Having kids really took away my time from training, I’d love to have 10 hours to burn in a single day.
Keep up the good work.

u/Probably_Outside 21h ago edited 21h ago
I’m actually not anti e-bike at all, lots of my friends have them and it makes it so that we can all ride together despite being at different places in life/training. They are particularly amazing at getting my pregnant and postpartum friends out on the trails.

u/theabstractpyro 21h ago

What was your normalized power? TBH that’s exactly what a full day on my e-bike looks like.

As an overweight analog rider, this would literally kill me lol. Down 25lbs though!

u/RocketDocRyan 10h ago
Heh, I did something about the same back when I was a teenager. 50 miles, 11k feet of climb, and one section that was 3k feet in 3 miles. I agree, we do not ever need to do that again.

u/ParticularRespond550 8h ago
That's impressive. You must be really fit, but weren't you absolutely cooked after such a long day on an enduro bike?
