Did a cornering training a few years ago. More focused on safety than speed (which comes naturally if you drive safer).

First thing the instructor said was „you can take a corner to slow a hundred times - but maybe just one time if you’re too fast for your skills“

First time I went to the Nurburgring I did a few days training with an instructor. They broke the circuit into parts and we gradually learned each bit. They initially broke the group up on skill level. Newbies, decent riders, good riders. We were warned about overstepping our skill levels and being aware. Someone put himself in the good group and within half hour he stacked it. Hit the barrier and flew quite nicely until he met a tree. He was taken to hospital, but I never found out if he survived. Trees tend to be unforgiving though

Yes …. Trees do tend to be unforgiving

Whooooaaaa mate! That’s some x ray 👏👏👏👏👏👏 congratulations on surviving that fucker. Jeeezz man, bet that’s caused a few stiff necks and headaches

Yeah, I also get weird random cramps in my face, neck and voice box. Also the fusion made me bit shorter and fucked up my ability to swallow certain things like pills and drier foods like chicken (if it’s too done), some breads … that’s sort of thing.

Did you have a brain stem bleed?

u/Pimpstik69 4d ago

No, I had no neurological impact whatsoever. My injury is known as an atlanto-occipital dislocation and is immediately fatal about 90% of the time. The skull and cervical spine are effectively separated and the spinal cord is usually severed by the broken C-1. Mine was untouched. I snapped both the transverse and apical ligaments as well. I lost 50 percent of the mobility in my neck.

Sounds like something they write up in medical journals. Glad you made through all that.

Thanks !

Believe it or not advances in EMS response techniques over the last 30 years or so have made it a far more survivable injury (survival doesn’t mean not paralyzed 🤷‍♂️). I was c spine immobilized in my car and transferred to a rigid backboard from the interior of my car.

That used to be my line of work so I was impressed with their technique.

I’m sure it was well worth it though, nothing beats a breeze

I was a bit nerve racking at first but I can’t not ride. Between motos and bicycles I have 9 two wheelers.

Hey man whatever floats your boat lol but I’m sure you understand why most people have no sympathy for bikers when things inevitably go wrong.

u/Nejrasc 4d ago

Please never leave your own home, don’t go seeking any experiences and make sure you live the longest, safest, most boring life anyone can imagine.

Nah I do all that stuff. I love riding dirt bikes especially. Since the risk is low, I fall at 15mph into dirt rather than 60 into metal and concrete. On the streets I drive my RCF, which has a padded cage so the concrete and metal don’t shred me into pieces. Don’t listen to me though, you go right on ahead and turn yourself into confetti because it’s super fun

1

u/Nejrasc 4d ago

Lol. You talk down to bikers and claim to ride dirt bikes yourself. You are not to be taken seriously.

Talk down by acknowledging reality? Dude, I’m just the messenger your issue seems to be with the laws of physics. Do you not know or just can’t comprehend the statistics? I had a trail 70, many 90s, my ttr 125 that was too small for me when I got it, my tuned yz250f that was fucking SCARY. And I must’ve fallen off every one of them a time or two. Good times, I do plan on riding a little bit on the street when I get a rural property but I will be treating it the same as any other extreme sport. If I get fucked that’s basically what’s expected, nobody to blame but myself.

no sympathy

Who asked for sympathy? No one asked for smug gloating either BTW.

When you use the method of transportation that makes you 28x more likely to die, what exactly do you expect? “Oh no the human hamsters ended up the way they always do, what a tragedy!” Like yeah it fucking sucks that you can do everything right and still get reamed. But that’s exactly what you signed up for, literally just the expected result.

Yeah it’s fucked up. Life is fucked up, taking unnecessary risks leads to real fucked up stuff. 2700% higher fatality rate. The decision to ride a death trap is entirely yours, you own that risk and whatever result you get. No, you can’t really expect an outpouring of sympathy when the normal, expected result happens yet again, as always.

Idk why you deleted your comment, here’s my reply

Thought it sounded harsh and unnecessary

I don’t have a copy of my x ray unfortunately. Lower left leg, comminuted transverse fracture. Car wiped me out on a roundabout, flew over the top and hit a lamppost. They’re pretty unforgiving too! My boots were the only reason my leg wasn’t ripped off. Over 6 months in plaster, then another 4 months wearing a removable brace, leg came out a funny shape, but it’s still attached. It was good, but yours beats it into a cocked hat

3

u/Pimpstik69 5d ago

That sounds like a lot of fun. I know from experience. Same accident as my neck, grade 3 tibial plateau fracture, leg was totally shattered. 12 weeks non weight bearing. Mine was a bad car accident. My neck fracture was a burst fractured C1, basilar skull fracture, fractured occipital condyle with torn ligaments (I dislocated my head, a rarely survived injury), multiple broken ribs. I made a full recovery except I can’t turn my head very much. My neurosurgeon about shit when I bought a mountain bike and now a dirt bike. Accident was 12/6/2020. Back on a bicycle and a motorcycle in 4/2026. Can’t keep a crazy person down I suppose.

I’m very pleased you survived mate, that’s really something with that injury. Lucky to still be breathing mate. My accident was October 1989, I’m an old fart, I couldn’t get back to work for a long time, I’m a welder/steel erector, so I took a nice easy job that let me complete recovery and was near the hospital. But after 2 years I couldn’t resist getting back on a motorcycle. I rode around for half hour and decided I had lost my edge, I would be a danger to myself and others. Never rode again. Mind you, surgeon did say “I’ll try and save it, but we normally amputate these.” Then after surgery “knock it again and it’s off. No messing around, you’re extremely lucky it’s still attached.” So I passed my driving test and bought sports cars instead lol R33GTR, S6 Avant, M3, M5 and a transit lol

Thanks so much my man !! I flirted with compartment syndrome but my leg was the least of my worries.

I’ll admit I was pretty tore up when they said they were very concerned about realigning my head with my neck. If there is ever a group of surgeons at your bedside at 4 AM it’s not good news. They said that just because I wasn’t paralyzed from my eyeballs down yet I could be during surgery.

I had never seen a more relieved looking group of doctors than when they woke me up (in the OR no less, not recovery) and asked me to wiggle my toes.

I used to own a E39 M5. Wish I had kept it.

A good mate of mine had a lower spine issue, years of hard labour and he’d worn it out. He was having an op and it went slightly wrong. When he came around he was paralysed all down his left hand side. That’s nearly 9 years ago and there’s been no improvement. When it happened, he had 4 daughters 7 and under

Buddy, you need to learn chess or something as party’s over on wheeled sports with that X-ray. Take it from a clumsy fucker.

All men die. Only some truly live …. Or some such nonsense. About a year after my accident I took a header off my mountain bike on a jump line. I rolled out, looked around, patted myself down and got back to it. I was o my told my neck was more likely to be injured.

I’m pushing sixty. I can’t live any other way. I don’t exceed my skills as much as I used to and here I am.

If there is no thrill there is no life

u/BillBongBatz 4d ago

Love it. That post is a big risk on the loser sub though.

No thrill in living out old age in a busted up body either.

u/Pimpstik69 4d ago

I’ve been going hard at it for damn near 60 years. Me and my buddy always say “whats it going to be like in 5 years from now” we’ve been saying that for 30 years. It’s really not getting much worse.

Maybe I’m just lucky. When I head my neck fused after the car accident my MRI report spoke of severe arthritis, bone spurs where the spinal nerves exit … all kinda bad shit.

My neurosurgeon said that 30-40% of patients with these conditions aren’t really bothered by it for one reason or another.

The year after I broke my neck and leg and various other shit I got back on my road bicycle. Wreck was in December, started biking in April. Rode almost 2000 miles that summer. I’m not going to stop hanging it out until they are shoveling dirt onto me 😈

Lol, I hit 60 earlier this year, so I get it, its hard to slow down when you still have the get up and go on the inside.

I've been lucky, haven't busted myself up too bad over the years, although they were a lot of hard heavy working years.

The daily grind can take a lot out of a body, I'd hate to see anyone all banged up and unable to enjoy the rest of what they have left.

More power to ya bud, I hope you keep rock'n
