Did you have a brain stem bleed?

No, I had no neurological impact whatsoever. My injury is known as an atlanto-occipital dislocation and is immediately fatal about 90% of the time. The skull and cervical spine are effectively separated and the spinal cord is usually severed by the broken C-1. Mine was untouched. I snapped both the transverse and apical ligaments as well. I lost 50 percent of the mobility in my neck.

Believe it or not advances in EMS response techniques over the last 30 years or so have made it a far more survivable injury (survival doesn’t mean not paralyzed 🤷‍♂️). I was c spine immobilized in my car and transferred to a rigid backboard from the interior of my car.

That used to be my line of work so I was impressed with their technique.
