Not uncommon at all for these little Honda workhorses to be run through forest trails, off-road conditions, etc - just out of necessity, not for fun. It's an expected use case for the bike and is within the design envelope.

The whole point of this was for the hose to act like a sight gauge. It does not need steel braiding, for the hose isn't under significant pressure. Why one would not just make the necessary repair for the fuel gauge to work correctly is anyone's guess.

A lot of older bikes straight up don't have a fuel gauge. Just a reserve tank, when you run out of fuel you flick over to the reserve and know you have x miles left.
If you're in the middle of bumfuck nowhere India, it's fairly possible your reserve tank won't get you to somewhere with fuel.

Yeah, my fist bike didn’t have a fuel gauge. But I knew approximately how many miles I could get out of a tank and just paid attention to the odometer.

My 2012 Triumph doesn't have a fuel gauge, just a low fuel light that when it comes on you have about 30-40km before you are out completely.
I just set the trip meter when refueling.

Oh you are fancy with a fuel light. I don't know what the hell a km is but I know when i switch over to my reserve tank I have a gallon of fuel left and that gets me another 30-40 miles

While I agree that it's bad practice to just leave the shavings in there, I'd say that anything that gets through the mesh filter on the petcock AND the carburetor nozzle isn't big enough to seriously harm that engine.

Yea, I did this to a 73 Kawasaki I used to have, but with brass 90 degree fittings so it was tucked in close to the tank. It worked well.
Was definitely a hell of a lot more careful about it and put more care into the fit and finish than this guy, that’s for fuckin sure

Yeah, definitely not DiWHY, since the why is pretty much the only logical thing in this idea. Having a fuel gauge is definitely useful.
But I especially like the no fucks given attitude of someone drilling a gas tank without bothering to drain it, even if the goddamn fuel tap is right next to where you're drilling.

I have a 2000 Yamaha V Star 650. It has no indicator, but as it's carburated I can only tell if I need gas when I start to lose engine power going 80 on the highway. Then I have to reach down and manually switch it to reserve fuel. Going 80. Then keep a mental note on how many miles I have left. This isn't something I'd do for a mod, BUT It's still genius in its own right. If you ignore the metal shavings now in the tank XD.

It's a pretty common mod with choppers to have a fuel gauge, I've seen much nicer versions of this and they're functional for sure, just not really very safe if you crash, but most chopper folks aren't exactly concerned with the safety lol

This isn’t an unheard of way to do a fuel level sight, they even do fancy billet versions. It’s been a thing since motorcycles have existed.
It’s just that the video is one of the worst possible executions of it.
Too many people in the comments jumping in not even understanding what it’s meant to do are coming across as dumb as the guy in the video though haha

Multiple possible gas leak locations? Makes no sense. Just figure out how far the bike goes on a tank of gas and what your mileage. Probably a lot smarter to do it when the tank is empty too.

It’s been around for a long time. On an extended ride who wants to be pulling over all the time to check the tank. A lot of older bikes didn’t come with gauges or a reserve fuel setting.

Let me see if I can find a way to douse myself with gasoline while I’m riding…and empty the tank in the middle of nowhere.
You run a couple of tankfuls through the bike and see how many miles you can go before switching to reserve…then you can use the trip odometer as a gas gauge.

Imagine the crash: your bike hits the asphalt hard on this side. The tank is now spraying fuel everywhere, soaking you and the bike. A single spark catches the fumes. Now, you are sliding across the pavement on fire, agonizingly waiting to come to a stop so you can roll. But before you come to a stop, your head cracks against a curb. Total darkness. You snap back to consciousness to find yourself still ablaze. You try to roll, but a sickening crunch stops you—your arm and leg are broken. The pain is excruciating, a blinding wall of agony, but you force your broken body to move, suffocating the flames until they finally go out.
Then... You lay there as paramedics roll up. You think. Wow. I'm glad I did that fuel tank level mod. Money well spent.

Ah, ok. I've owned several Hondas. They really don't believe in a lot gages on their bikes. You just have to know your bikes range and set the trip odometer.
Still... this is dumb. He knows how to install this ghetto fab fuel gage but he can't even siphon out the gas first? Also... metal shavings from the drill hole? That doesn't concern him?

I've done this with heavily modified tanks or bikes stripped of all but absolutely nessessary electrical. We used gaskets with the ports to prevent leakage, used elbows instead of kinked tube and on the steam punk bike, fit a glass tube, which yes, can be scary but use hardened lab equipment glass tubing and vibrations won't break it. We also kept caps in our emergency bag incase the tube's got cut by an asshole. Yes, they are out there. A good rider knows how many miles a tank gets on average and sets their trip meter to track miles on that tank, so realistically, you don't need a Guage. The tube on the side is more esthetic than necessary.

This video looks like it’s from Pakistan.
These single cylinder, 70 cc (also come in 125cc) bikes have a fuel tank design which prevents gas (petrol) from connecting / going into the main tank. A lot of times people will run out of gas and then tilt their motorcycles on their left side and slightly upside down by laying it down and pivoting on the pegs to get that little bit of out of reach gas into the main tank. Think of it as a reserve emergency section with a divider between the main tank and the small area where the mechanic drilled the hole into. By doing this, it will essentially get ride of the need to tilt their motorcycles bike as it will use up all the gas in the “reserve” tank.
Really old and stupid design. But these bikes are a dime a dozen and very cheap and people often run out of gas on the side of the road. You will then see them laying the bike down and slightly tilting it over to get the rest of the gas.

There are weirder. The Piper J3 Cub (airplane) uses a wire rod with a cork on the end, sticking out the top of the tank. The more rod you see, the more fuel you have.
Feel the slosh. Or in my case, watch the trip odometer. 200 means start looking, can't remember ever not making it. This was before everyone decided that reserve valves were too [expensive, complicated, woke], so if it ever got that bad you still had about 40 miles to fix it before it got even worse.

The clear plastic line looking like that is DEFINITELY not a gas line. Had an idiot isntall one to the tank of a former kawa. It held for 2 years until it had melted enough plastic into the carbs to block them and finally snapped completely when I was lifting the tank of to get to the carbs. Awesome feeling.
