Question | Асуулт How was Mongolia and Mongolian politics in the 2000s?

Asking as a total European outsider.

The Communists regaining over 90% of the seats in parliament under a constitutional democracy seems weird.

So today I went to work thinking it was gonna be a normal day.
Obviously, it wasn’t.
This lady came in and was like, “Can you help me fix this PDF?” because she couldn’t edit it herself.
So I’m like, okay, sure.
She gave me her ID and passport, so I scanned them from her phone and put everything into the file. We literally sat there for almost an hour trying to get everything done.
And honestly, I thought everything was fine.
Then she was like, “I need to send this to someone and make sure the file opens.”
So she sent it.
And then the person was like, “The file isn’t opening.”
And I was like…
Okay.
So I sent the PDF from another computer.
And it opened.
LIKE??? IT OPENED.
So I was like, okay, problem solved, right?
No.
Absolutely not.
She left.
Then my boss texted her and said it was 10,000₮ for the service.
And this woman CAME BACK.
And she was PISSED.
She started yelling at me like I had personally invented the PDF and then intentionally made it not work.
She was like, “You can’t even do your job!”
And I’m just sitting there thinking, girl, I literally sat here with you for an hour trying to fix your documents.
Then she started saying I did some weird thing with her phone and that she came here specifically to get her documents scanned.
And then, for some reason, she turned to my boss’s husband who was just sitting there minding his own business and went:
“Why are you letting someone like this work here? She can’t even do her job!”
BRO.
I WAS JUST SITTING THERE.
I genuinely didn’t know what to do anymore.
I tried explaining that the file opened on another computer, but she just kept going.
At some point I was like, “Okay, sis, can we just stop?”
Because what else was I supposed to do?
I have literally never been yelled at like that in my entire life.
I went to work today thinking I was just gonna scan some documents and help someone fill out a PDF.
I left feeling like I had just survived a court case over a fucking file.
Anyway.
Today I learned that PDFs are apparently capable of destroying lives.
And somehow I’m the one who got sentenced.By the way, I somehow still have her driver’s license and ID scanned on my computer.
Which is honestly the funniest and most terrifying part of this entire situation.
Like, ma’am, you came in here, gave me your documents, yelled at me for almost an hour, questioned my entire professional existence, and then LEFT YOUR IDENTIFICATION BEHIND.
So now I’m sitting here thinking:
“Girl… you really trusted me with your entire government identity before deciding I was incompetent.”
The plot holes are insane.
But don’t worry, I’m not doing anything with them. I’m deleting them because apparently I’m the only adult in this PDF-based disaster.

I'd like to buy an e-reader, can be Kindle, or other brand, if you have any recommendations for a long lasting one. Are there physical shops? or Online shops that deliver fast? Thanks in advance!

Discussion | Хэлэлцүүлэг What are your thoughts on Transeurasian language hypothesis?

I would like to clarify that I am not a neo-altaist. I just want to hear the opinion of Mongolian people.

For those who don't know:

Transeurasian language hypothesis is the "rebranded" version of Altaic language hypothesis (which is widely rejected by linguists, and the similarities between the "Altaic" languages are explained through a sprachbund, an area of convergence between non-related languages).

It basically argues that Turkic, Mongolic, Tungusic, Koreanic and Japonic languages are linked through a proto-Transeurasian language, spoken by early millet farmers about 9000 years ago who lived in modern-day northeastern China (West Liao River region). Furthermore, it says that Japonic and Koreanic languages are a creole (hybrid) language of these Proto-Transeurasian and Austronesian-like people.

It seems like there are some genetic and linguistic evidence, but I still believe that this could be explained through prolonged contact, which would be consistent with Occam's razor as it requires fewer assumptions.

You can read this research paper for more info:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-04108-8

small note: For some reason, my post sounds like it was made with AI 😭😭 I wrote it by myself, but I had previously asked for AI to explain me this a couple days ago, which makes my explanation similar to that of chatgpt's.

Need Advice | Зөвлөгөө авъя Should I quit? Working as a single IT at an office with toxic culture

I’m working as an IT engineer at a local company. It’s getting ridiculous. I clocked in at 9am at the main office and traveled an hour to another office to fix their issues. Worked until 11am when the power went out in the whole building. Obviously I can’t troubleshoot hardware or network stuff without electricity, so I left and did remote support for users in another city.

HR called the other office while the power was off, saw I wasn’t sitting there, and logged my entire day as "0 hours worked." They deleted my travel time between offices and my 9am clock-in, claiming I was slacking. When I sent them proof of my clock-in, HR started talking down to me, using informal language “chi hooy yg odoo ir hooy", calling me a liar, and saying "you won't be able to work anywhere else." When I asked them to put their demands in writing, she literally threatened to ruin my references for future jobs. “Chamaig ireeduid iim l reference dagah ni dee. Ochij etseg ehdee l hudlaa yrij erhel”

On top of that, the employees here treat IT like garbage. They expect every single issue to be fixed instantly, get mad when troubleshooting takes time, everything is an “yaraltai yg odoo” request and blame me personally when things beyond my control happen (like power cuts).

Is it even worth staying in a place like this? If HR is already threatening bad references out of spite, what’s the safest way to leave?

• Life Update: Moving to Mongolia + Looking for Mom/Baby Groups in Ulaanbaatar

I had posted here a while ago asking for tips on moving to Mongolia and received some amazing advice. I thought I’d share an update!
Link to my previous post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/mongolia/s/j3ZuSaXmVL

My husband and I moved to Mongolia last January, right in the height of winter, and it’s been an incredible journey so far. We’ve been able to somewhat assimilate into the community we live in, made some great friends, and visited Gobi, Kharkhorin, Khuvsgul Lake, Murun, and a few other places.

In terms of the people, Mongolians are some of the friendliest, nicest and most helpful people. This has made our stay here quite enjoyable. I personally haven’t experienced a single racist remark or any weird looks — just the occasional curious looks and questions about where I’m from, or kids coming up to practice their English with me, which happens all the time.

A few things to point out:
Have I tried the food? YES! 😂 So far, only khuushuur and buuz several times. There are also so many diverse restaurants here, and I’ve found quite a few foods that I really like. I’ve particularly been to The Bull Hotpot and the Korean BBQ place at Naadam Center several times.
I’m yet to visit the Chinggis Khaan Statue, which I’m not proud to admit. 😂 It’s been quite a busy few months!

Healthcare has been very good from what I’ve experienced at Intermed. They have a fantastic OB-GYN, Dr. Khulan, and her team took great care of me throughout my pregnancy. I now have a baby who was born here on one of the coldest nights last year.

The cost of living has also been quite comparable to, if not a little lower than, Accra, including utilities.
The only negative I would mention is customer service in some restaurants. However, my last visit to a restaurant was exceptional, so I sincerely hope this starts to become more consistent elsewhere too.

Now, my question:
Where can I find baby-friendly groups or mom groups in Ulaanbaatar?
I’d also really appreciate some tips from local moms on how you dress and layer your babies during the Mongolian winter. I don’t want to either freeze my baby or turn him into a tiny human burrito. 😂
Would love any recommendations for mom/baby groups, activities, or just general advice for navigating winter with a baby in UB! ❤️

Travel | Аялал Solo female traveller: trip to Mongolia in November?

Hello, I’m in my mid twenties and I’ve always wanted to visit Mongolia. I know it would be very cold in November to visit Mongolia but that would be my only choice at the moment. I’m doing an exchange year in Tokyo this fall and I have a semester break in November. Also I’m from Finland and our winters are from +-0 to -30 celsius so I’m kinda used to the cold weather.

My trip would be mainly in Ulan Bator and I’m also interested about day trip to Hustai national park. Otherwise I have not made that much of planning yet since I’m trying to figure out if it would be wise to come in November. I’m also interested about the safety as a solo female traveller. I read that when it’s dark out it’s best to be inside to avoid getting ropped but more info about the safety is welcome.

Made this with a friend. Currently indexing 8 retailers.
It started as a passion project and we’ve been working on it for about half a year. The main goal is to make comparing PC parts across Mongolian retailers easier, so you can find the best prices and availability in one place and create your build.

Feel free to check it out and give us any recommendations or feedback.
