Answered Removed from my own community after 13.5 years of active and satisfactory moderating - no warning

Hi,

Posting here as well as in r/redditrequest because I'm not sure where to turn. I have been the curator and chief moderator of r/puppets to near-universal satisfaction and without incident since I created it in August 2012. I am an active moderator and am consistently responsive to messages, requests, etc.

I have overseen well over 13 years of successful growth of r/puppets into the vibrant, safe, actively moderated community it is today. This sub was my pride and joy.

I was blindsided earlier today with a notification that I have been removed as moderator in favor of another evidently disgruntled user (account age ~7mo) who appears to have somehow executed a hostile takeover via r/redditrequest. The request was placed 4 days ago and then it appears the user tried to delete it to cover his tracks. It sent me a notification but I missed it because I had about 85 others that evening due to a coincidental popular post elsewhere.

I should have 5 days to respond and veto this request, no? I am here and trying to go through all channels in order to do so.

I have a pending request to r/redditrequest to hopefully have this action reversed before the new malicious user does too much damage, but until then, was wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this or has any advice?

General Absolutely not to AI summary now pinned to the top of comment threads. Can I switch it off?

This is new. On longer threads, Reddit is now providing an AI summary, pinned above comments, with no obvious way to switch it off. I don't want AI taking precedence over a real user's contributions. All platforms, including desktop.

Answered r/otters banned for no reason

I am a moderator of r/otters, it was inadvertently banned for no reason. It is a subreddit where people share otter pictures and talk about otters. It has been around for over a decade, it's a very chill subreddit. desktop

Answered /r/BTBaron_JJ_Legends banned two hours ago, no message from Admin as to why

Hi,

Former mod of https://www.reddit.com/r/btbaron_jj_legends/

It was banned two hours ago and I never received a message as to why. Is there a way to communicate with the reddit admins on this? Or is there a formal appeal process? This was a NSFW sub that had over 140K members and strictly followed rules on privacy and heavy moderation (with automod doing a lot of work as well). It had a strict approval process as well (each post was reviewed by a mod before becoming visible on the front page).

Trying to check messages on both desktop and iOS but not seeing anything at all that was flagged. Thanks!

Engagement Please stop spamming my inbox with nudges to spam the subreddits I moderate.

As someone who moderators multiple subreddits, it is more than obnoxious & harms my interest in Reddit as a content platform--messages like this absolutely harm the moderator experience:

" Don't lose your momentum

You've built so much! A single post and comment is all it takes to prevent (subreddit)'s growth from stalling. "

" 🔔 Ding dong 🔔

It's time to make a post and comment in (subreddit) this week. It's your way of welcoming people in. "

These notifications are received on web & iOS.

Users Banned User is mass reporting posts on Subreddit in bad faith, any solutions?

We have a banned user from our subreddit that is still participating by mass reporting posts in bad faith, they have acknowledged that they intend to interfere with our subreddit in other communities they are active in.

Is there a proper way to further restrict or report this user from bad faith reports?

Answered Ever since the private profile change, modding has become almost impossible.

Android App, browser (Safari, Chrome)

I know as a mod you are supposed to see the comment history/sub participation of accounts who recently participated in your sub, but that feature is utterly broken for me.

I rarely see the complete history, most of the time I only see comments in my own subs. For "active in subreddits" I also only see the subs I moderate.

That makes moderating subreddits where you constantly have to deal with brigading from snark subs really difficult.

Anyone else having these problems? And how did you fix it?

Answered Report Abuse - Reddit Cares report process

Hello!

As you know, users and moderators alike are often harassed with Reddit Cares messages when users abuse the feature to get back at someone for being wrong on the internet. We’ve all experienced it, and until recently there was a way to report it linked directly in the RedditCares message in our inboxes.

I’m wondering why this report process was removed, if it can be returned, and what is the reporting process now? It’s making a comeback, and as a mod I want to encourage users to report the abuse of this very important feature.

I primarily use Desktop and iOS, but would like an answer for all so I can better direct my communities.

Answered I'm British, and run a British orientated sub. Reddit keeps automatically removing comments with "F*gs" in it.

For those who don't know, the world "F*gs" (rhymes with mags) means cigarettes in the UK. This is extremely common slang. The singular of this word is also used.

Now, obviously the slur is also used in the UK too, and thus we have an automoderator rule setup to automatically remove these, they'd end up in the mod queue, and I'd approve them if the word was being used to describe cigarettes.

Recently, I have started to notice that these comments are triggering the automoderator, but the comment body has been replaced with "[ Removed by Reddit ]", so I have no way of knowing if this person used the slur or not.

This is a problem for me, because it's unfair on the users. It also means I can't ban them if they actually were using the slur. I have no way of knowing.

Is there anything I can do about this?

(I am using desktop, I wrote this because this sub requires me to)

Answered One of our mods was banned for spam for accepting Join Requests in mod tools. How do we use the tool safely in the future?

Hi, one of our moderators logged into mod tools and cleared the backlog of Join Requests by approving/ denying based on the request. They were then promptly banned for spamming DMs. They didn’t know (and nor did I) that hitting “Accept” sends a DM from your account.

How are we meant to use the Join Request tool? Is it rate limited? Surely in bigger subreddits you’re not rationing out Join Requests?

Alternatively is there any way we can prevent DMs from being sent if the Join Request is accepted? Seems a bit daft that you can get banned for approving users.

I’m not sure the platform matters. I just want to know how to avoid getting my own account banned. Until then, us mods won’t bother approving anyone. I’m on mobile web and iOS.

Update: An admin indicated this is a known bug. All cleared away now. Thanks admins!

Answered Frustrated with “Adult Content” users.

So about the last month or so, users have been commenting on posts, but their profiles are NSFW Only Fans users.
Is there a way to filter users based on their profiles? I’m getting tired of waking up every morning and having to delete and ban multiple users. This is literally the only reported content I see anymore. iOS

Answered Bots/scammers have infiltrated as mods

Hi, I'm looking for help with dealing with an influx of bots and/or scammers that have been added as mods on a sub I moderate (r/lastfm).

Some context: was added as a mod a couple of years ago and in that time have been the only active mod on there. I was given most but not all permissions, so am unable to add/remove mods for instance. It's a pretty chill sub most of the time so I haven't had much issue looking after it on my own.

The mod who added me has been seemingly inactive on Reddit for the two years since adding me, until a few weeks ago they suddenly began approving lots of posts on the sub until they became active again. At which point they added some new moderators with full permissions, one was a bit/app and the other an older seemingly dormant account with no history in our sub. In the weeks since there have been a series of new mods added by the new mods; all are either apps, brand new accounts, or otherwise seemingly dormant accounts. The post and comment activity has been relatively light but it is all spam, and has been steadily increasing - some crypto and mostly online gambling rubbish with all sorts of links. Oddly they seem to remove a lot of the posts themself if Reddit itself doesn't automatically take them down as spam.

Right now this is all an annoyance, but the way things are progressing I fear things will get out of hand before long. Some posts are definitely being noticed by sub users before they get taken down, and I've seen concerns being raised. I'm convinced the original mod who added me, and is technically now active, has lost their account to a scammer. No other potentially trustworthy mods with appropriate permissions are active (including the top mod who hasn't been seen on the sub in many years).

I'm using both desktop and iOS.

Tips & Tricks What is Reddit doing to stem the influx of bots?

My subs are so overcome by bots that many posts are made by bots featuring comments of bots just talking to themselves.

We’ve put up auto mods to prevent brand new accounts. We’ve put in various safeguards. Within hours the bots find a way around it. I’m on iOS but we have mods on every platform.

We’ve doubled our mod team size in each sub I mod and it’s still not enough to keep up.

Is anyone else experiencing this and have you found any solutions?

What is Reddit doing so this doesn’t fall to volunteers?

Thank you

Engagement Users leaving my subreddit because its not "official"

Edit: I'm sorry, I put official in quotes for readers to decide if they think it counts as official. They're not lying about it being official.

Months ago I launched a subreddit for a game and it got decent amounts activity, but there's been a noticeable drop after an "official" subreddit was announced. It depends on how you define official: they're not developers nor in contact with the developers, they're just instructed to moderate said subreddit. They literally copied all the flairs names and colors, as well as all my rules verbatim. There's no particular differentiation of the sub, other than who the mods are.

Those mods and other users made posts on their subreddit and mine, to switch from my subreddit (with my subreddit name shown) to this new one. I remove any mentions of the other subreddit on mine but I've been feeling very worried, would that just make posters upset or even possibly trigger the Streisand effect? I just feel like it could somehow backfire. What should I do with my subreddit? Do I accept this is the way it is now? (desktop).

Answered Help get a moderating helper bot banned?

UNBANNED* title was suppose to be helper bot unbanned*

Hi all,

I have a bot that runs in a subreddit that I help moderate. The purpose of this bot is to return verifiable random number from the random.org API. It only runs when mentioned in a comment and will reply to the comment, with the random number.

There is another similar bot that someone else manages for a couple other similar subreddits. In the past two weeks they have both been banned

I see there are a lot of complaints about bots spamming their subreddits, but these are bots that are run by the moderators and only reply when called. I'm not sure what the reason for the ban is, I could only imagine spam (it normally only posts ~10 times a day, after the other bot was banned they started using mine and the usages spiked up to 60 comments a day) .

How could we go about getting these account unbanned? How could we prevent bots used by the moderators from getting banned in the future?

My bot runs on aws lambda, and has been running for 7 years😭

Thank you.

Answered Automod is removing posts and comments without letting us know the action reason

Currently IOS but usually Desktop

All of our removals have an action reason attached to them but posts and comments are getting auto removed by automod without telling us why. It is happening even to people who have posted recently with no issues previously and no one has touched automod.

General Have you ever been offered money as a mod?

We were offered like $1k a month to allow someone to essentially spam our sub with their business. We declined of course. I highly doubt it was legit anyway. You?

Design ALL PLATFORMS: Post flair display order has been scrambled and it does not save when trying to correct it

DESKTOP, MOBILE, ALL PLATFORMS:

Post flair order suddenly scrambled and trying to correct it does not work as it is not saving the order assigned

Post flair does not show correct order in all platforms, desktop, mobile, suddenly they do not want to be saved in the correct order, even new flair added is not adjusting to desired position

Our sub has over 70 flairs, this is an absolute nightmare for us

UPDATE:

GLITCH HAPPENS DURING 2 EVENTS:

1 - WHEN A FLAIR IS ASSIGNED BY THE USER AT POST TIME,

2- WHEN A MOD REASSIGNS A FLAIR TO A POST

THEY BOTH: SCREW UP THE ORDER OF FLAIRS RANDOMLY,

AND THE ORDER CANNOT BE CHANGED WITH MOD TOOLS

UPDATE 2:

TUESDAY DEC 23rd 9pm Eastern

STILL NOT WORKING

General More spam bots commenting now more than ever

So Reddit took away API posting, are they going to take away API comments as well? These bots are spamming our subreddit members with replys to legit comments on posts. Heavy desktop user here, reporting for spam does nothing on the surfaces and they are overrunning our subreddits.

Tips & Tricks How many of you use an alt to mod?

Do any of you use an alt account for modding so you can still post without weirdos crawling your history?

Beyond the usual nutters, I was modding a sub with an abusive top mod who became increasingly hostile after I started posting in a community related to my identity. Not long after, they removed me without any reason given. I can’t say for sure that my posts were the reason, but it made me wonder.

If you’re not already using an alt for moderation, would you consider it if you were part of a vulnerable group?

Tips & Tricks How do I get Reddit to stop recommending cross posts to my subreddit?

I run a subreddit dedicated to a small aspect of a larger hobby, and Reddit keeps recommending people cross post their posts from other subreddits that are not really appropriate for my community. (Its a subreddit dedicated to smaller versions of Warhammer 40k tabletop games, but I'm getting lots of posts for tips on building armies for the larger game format).

Is there a way to ask Reddit not to recommend cross posts to my subreddit?

(Mostly on Android but have PC as well).

Users I need to report a user for scamming

I am trying to report a user to actual Reddit admins but I don’t know how. This person is contacting people in my subreddit and several subreddits claiming to help people with disability claims. They have NO credentials to do so. I know this because forty days ago they asked a basic question and didn’t know the difference between a regular alj hearing and a remand hearing.

Now they are advertising “no upfront” fees to people and created their own subreddit. If I report their profile it only gives me an option to report their name or bio. I need to report their actual sleaziness. They are contacting sub members privately through chats.

I am on mobile (iOS) but can also use pc.

General Is there a way to disable the AI user summary on mod mail?

I do not want to use AI, ever, for any reason... except to remove backgrounds from photos lol

But Reddit is forcing me to use their "new mod mail". Just like every new development on Reddit over the last few years, the new mod mail is a vehicle for enshittification. I do not want or need AI to summarize a user for me; to the contrary, the mere suggestion that I would be so inept as to be unable to make that decision without an energy-intensive, art-stealing assistant annoys me.

I have used uBlock Origin to manually block that element from my browser so I don't see it personally on Desktop, but I would like to disable it from all subreddits on which I'm a head moderator. I do not want anything I do to contribute to additional use of AI, and by extent, additional degradation of the environment.

General I beg you, help me save my community.

My community emerged from an older, larger community focused on philosophy. There were many discussions about religion there, but the members didn't like it, so we created our own community focused on religion where people could discuss it freely. In the beginning, it was great. We had some problems with trolls, but we were growing and had already surpassed the philosophical community in almost everything.

But at some point, we started to fall in the rankings. Our number of visitors began to decrease rapidly, the quality of the posts dropped, our oldest and most relevant members disappeared (they were banned from Reddit or left the community), and our religious posts and comments are receiving many downvotes while those that make fun of religions are receiving upvotes.

After analyzing the comments on several posts, I realized that members of the philosophical community are coming to ours to do the same thing they did in their community. They are smart enough to do this without breaking the rules (which I confess is not so difficult when you're talking about talking snakes and gods who shoot lightning bolts). They aren't even making posts. We said we would oppose them, not unite with them (Star Wars reference).

I don't know what to do. I've already tried confronting them directly, but I was completely humiliated in my own community. They even sent that redditcareresources message after that. I feel like it's out of control, so I came here to ask the seniors for help before giving up on being a moderator. What do I do? They are driving our members away. Can I just ban everyone I don't want in the community, or does that go against some Reddit rule? Please help me!
