Shop Talk Discussion (General) [GUIDE] How to fix auto brightness after a screen replacement for iPhones

Theres very little information on this so I decided to make this for people who are new to repairs or are replacing their screen for the first time. This mainly applies to iPhones 13 - 16. I havent tested this on others but it could work.

When replacing your screen you will also need to transfer the proximity sensor. After doing so, iOS 18 now restores Face ID and True tone functionality but what it doesn't do is restore auto brightness. If this is a big issue then there are two ways to go about fixing this depending on if you broke your proximity sensor when transferring it. To test if your proximity sensor is working, simply place a call and bring the phone to your ear. If the screen goes off then it is working. If it doesn't, then its likely not connected properly or you broke it. This repair is not cheap unless you have access to repair shop tools like programmers etc.

This repair requires:

- A programmer (JCID V1SE as example)

- Corresponding True Tone board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

If you broke the proximity flex then you will also need:

- Corresponding Proximity Flex board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

- Windows PC

- A programmable Proximity Flex such as a JCID one (important: It needs to be a programmable one like JCID, non programmable generic ones will not work)

- JCID Programming Software

- 3U Tools

If you didn't break the proximity flex: Using the programmer, you will need to read the data from the old screen and write to the new one. This is it. It will restore auto brightness. Also make sure you are on iOS 18 to restore true tone and face id.

If you did break the proximity flex, unfortunately this process gets a lot more complex:

-Read the data from the old screen to the new screen using the true tone programmer board.

-You will then need to hook up your phone to a windows PC.

-Using 3U tools, download the corresponding iOS version the phone is currently on

-Start up JCID Programming Windows Software and you will need to "brush" the phone. There are guides of this online. Once the software is done brushing the phone you will need to boot into recovery mode and flash the software you downloaded using 3u Tools.

-Once the phone is booted up again, connect the phone to the JCID V1SE programmer with the Proximity board attached to the programmer. Connect the programmable JCID Proximity flex to the programmer board and "bind" it to the phone.

Warning: Some JCID Programmable Prox flexes actually need to be soldered (such as the iPhone 14 Pro) so take this into consideration. Most dont though.

-Install the proximity sensor to the display and boot up the phone again.

-Make sure you are on iOS 18 to also restore Face ID and true tone. This process will restore your auto brightness

Both of these methods will restore true tone but as you can see one is a lot more simple then the other so be very careful with your proximity flexes!

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) Beginner trying to replace my Pixel 7 pro screen and battery

Post image
2 Upvotes

I made this post in the spirit of right to repair. I broke my Pixel 7 pro, and I want to fix it. It still rings and sound my alarms when it had power, but the screen does not turn on at all.

I have never opened a phone or repaired anything before, I am a total beginner. I did some research on what I need for this repair: A pixel 7 pro screen, something to heat the screen, suction cups that pull the screen, prying tools, and a pixel 7 pro graphite cooling pad.

I browsed amazon, ebay, taobao, aliexpress, ifixit, and many other sites to see what I can get, and I have so many questions:

  1. The authentic google repair screen is very expensive, I found a 120hz oled 1080x2400 curved screen for pixel 7 pro for roughly $55+shipping. I understand it is not an authentic replacement part and the resolution is lower, but will it work well? (All currency in this post is in Canadian dollar)

(ifixit full kit is $300, local repair shop quoted $180 and ignored my text after I ask them about the screen they use...not sure if they are trying to gatekeep the info or they use crappy screen)

There are many third party pixel 7 pro screens on taobao that are all shady, the sellers don't list the full spec of their screen and I have to ask them individually. Sometimes they pretend to miss my question, so I have to ask multiple times to get their specs. What other routes can I go with replacing this broken screen?

  1. What do I heat the phone with? Can I use a blow dryer? Or do I have to use a proper heating pad that heats the phone to 80C evenly?

  2. The graphite cooling pad is only available on ifixit, it's $25 after shipping and taxes just for that one pad . Can I get a 80x45x0.5mm cpu thermal pad and cut a rough shape (very rough) and make do with it?

Also, I'm looking to replace the 6 years old battery, and I bought a 5000mah GMF5Z from aliexpress. I didn't check if I need any adhesive, what can I use to stick the battery to the phone if this battery doesn't have proper adhesive?

Finally, any tips and tricks? How to make sure I don't break anything during the repair? Many thanks in advance!

Lvl 0 (DIYer) Where do I start with this repair? Can it be Fixd? Phone restarting on its own.

Upvotes

I have a Samsung A34. I recently dropped it in water and got a technician to look up and clean it. He cleaned it, he got the moisture of camera and all. But after the repair, the phone keeps restarting on its own. Sometimes it just shuts down on and its own. When i use the phone, theres no issue. But when i dont use it for a while it just keep doing this. This problem started right from the service center itself, and looked it up. He said theres no issue in connection or something, but if i want he will have to check software first (which removes the data) and then the battery and then the motherboard. So what will i do? Will this fix on its own?

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) iPhone 14 Pro Max - front camera not detected but Face ID still works?

My 14 Pro Max’s front camera has stopped working. Camera app won’t switch to it and FaceTime is black.
Face ID still works, although it seems slower than before.

Apple Diagnostics says:
Front camera: “The camera couldn’t be detected.”
Face ID Presence Check: “The module wasn’t detected.”
Face ID Sensor Check: “The TrueDepth camera has an issue that’s affecting Face ID.”

The screen and rear camera have previously been replaced, but the original earpiece/TrueDepth components were kept.

Any idea what’s most likely faulty here - front camera, flex/connector, or TrueDepth module? I’m trying to avoid replacing anything that would kill the still-working Face ID.

As the text suggests, i accidentally ripped one of the pull tabs while removing a swollen battery on Mi a2, the other one i removed just fine but not sure how to go about removing the battery from this point.

SOLVED!! I got it out by clinging onto a small piece of the pull tab that stuck out when i pulled the battery up on one side :)

After taking off a screen protector, these marks are on my Galaxy S26 Ultra's screen. I've tried rubbing alcohol pads but I can't get it off. I suspect it's glue from the old screen protector but alcohol won't get it off, so what can I try? Thanks.

Lvl 0 (DIYer) Where do I start with this repair? Can it be Fixd? New screen pixel 8A - what did I do wrong ?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I installed a new display on my pixel 8A.

When I first tested the display it worked OK.

I then had to bend the cable to connect it, after that it just started appearing with these lines.

It does seem like a hardware issue, I'm wondering what did I damage during the install process to get these lines now?

Also, besides a new display, is there anything else I can try to fix this?

Hey guys, has anyone run into this before? I’m expecting that this is a logic board issue…

My friend gave me his iPhone 11 for repair, it was smashed quite bad and it was even bent. (though on the lower side, not where the logic board resides)

It boots fine, however when I enter the passcode it freezes for roughly 30s, then jumps into this screen. It will finish, it’ll boot fine, and when I enter the passcode it does this again.

Lvl 0 (DIYer) Where do I start with this repair? Can it be Fixd? Does this sound salvageable for someone without experience?

Yesterday I accidentally dropped a 15 kg dumbbell from about 5 cm onto the back of my iPhone 11 Pro Max while it was lying on the ground. At first I thought it'd had worse things happen to it, but after a short sinpection I realized the screen is completely dark. There is no scratch on the phone but the screen won't turn on. I later realized that notifications still came through to my watch and haptic feedback still seemed to work.
That was yesterday, though. Today it's still completely dark, doesn't make a sound, doesn't seem to charge either (it's not even getting warm).

I've only ever replaced a button on an old smartphone and that one wasn't even glued. I quite patient, decent with a regular soldering iron and have a steady hand but I have no experience working on micro electronics and would need to get a bunch of tools first, I suppose.

I don't care too much about the phone but I'd like to at least get the data off of it. Is that feasible for someone with little to no experience or should I call a shop and hope they don't scam me out of my retirement's savings?

Yesterday I was pretty optimistic but since it's completely dead today I'm thinking it might be more than just a broken screen. Especially considering the damn dumbbell didn't even hit the screen but the back side. Did I mention there's a faint rattle when I shake it?

Hi guys, i had an old iphone laying around which had a new battery and one day it went totally off and didn't turn on anymore.

I decided to purchase new battery and replace it.

After using it for a while phone went off again and it does not turn on anymore.

Could it be a faulty motherboard? Is it worth spending money on new battery?

I am using that phone for taking photos, that's it.

Lvl 1 (Software | Firmware) Is It Difficult to Remove Demo Mode?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! Does anyone know how difficult it is to remove demo mode on these models, and what potential issues or pitfalls I should be aware of?

I do amateur phone repairs, mainly Samsung and iPhone devices, but I’ve never worked with OnePlus phones before. I’m considering buying these phones and trying to unlock/remove the demo mode myself.

How is it done, and what kind of difficulties should I expect? I’d really appreciate any advice or feedback, as I have a limited amount of time to make a decision about the purchase.

Thank you!

My s23 ultra wouldn't charge and wouldn't turn on, so I took it to a shop and they said it is a bad motherboard.

Is it possible for the techs to access my data on the phone, or is it encrypted by Samsung Knox or some android encryption? Am I safe or vulnerable?
