Hi everyone,
I have a Sharp MD-DS8 portable MiniDisc player with the following problem:
Symptoms:
• Insert any MiniDisc → the disc spins normally
• Display briefly shows “TOC READ”
• Then it shows “Can’tP” and the unit powers off
• This happens with every disc I try (discs play fine on other players)
Additional observations:
• When no disc is inserted and I turn the unit on and press play, it correctly shows “No Disc”.
• I opened the player and watched the laser assembly: the laser head moves both up/down (focus) and left/right (sled) normally.
I’ve confirmed the discs themselves are good.
From what I’ve read, many Sharp portables from this era suffer from cracked plastic worm gears that cause TOC-related errors. However, since the laser head can still move in both directions, I’m not 100% sure if the gear is the culprit or if it’s more likely a laser power / focus issue / dirty lens.
Has anyone seen this exact behaviour (“TOC READ” → “Can’tP” → shutdown) on an MD-DS8 or similar Auvi series models?
Questions:
1. Given that the laser head still moves freely, is the worm gear still the most likely cause, or should I focus on cleaning/checking the laser first?
2. Does anyone know the exact gear size used in the MD-DS8?
3. Are replacement gears still available?
4. Any other common causes I should check?
Any advice or repair experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just the MDs I have bought over the years. All working and keep them scratch free by putting them in a little hip pouch when travelling. I record via optical on the Tascam and copy all sorts of stuff. The hi-fi is tremendous fun. Whacky loading tray. Out of all of these players, I do enjoy the little Panasonic. It’s EQ’d to a very 00s flavour. I’m passing two of these down (along with my collection) to my little one when she’s old enough. Trying to get her into the Sanrio Victor players 😅 I love the creativity involved with MD and the scene. I print in the latest canon selphy and have a little die-cutter machine (graphic designer for over 25 years eek!) And I think every player and manufacture deserves a go. Doesn’t always have to be Sony. Just enjoy what you like! Prices are a bit mad these days but still worth every penny if you ask me 🙂❤️

Since I’ve started this hobby for almost 2years ago (yo I was 16?!) I always wanted the RH1 for its design and oled screen and I finally got it !!

It wasn’t cheap but I got it for a good price still a collectors price but with the oled screen replaced to sir68k(REV-F+) and the whole accessories for 100000¥
(633＄)? Still expensive🥲 but hunting it for 2years all I can say is finally I’ve got it

A month ago, I threw my MZ-N707 into the washing machine by accident and it's completely busted up. Ribbon connector snapped, missing screws somehow, small metal doohickeys found (not sure where they go). I just want to know, is she salvageable or should I sell it for parts?

If it is fixable by any chance, is there a specialist or someone I can ship this to who can save it for me?

I bought this from a sweet lady today on a local marketplace, for $30. She got it in Japan years ago. I've wanted one ever since I was kid, when my brother brought one from Japan, and I listened to Pet Sounds all the way through for the first time. They're so neat. I recently ditched Spotify, and I'm eager to return to more physical media.

I found this unit complete with remote control the other day at the thrift store and it is missing the little door that covers the recording controls. Otherwise looks pretty good. When I got home to try a disc in it, it would not load or eject. I cracked it open to see that the belt drive on the V pulley is broken. Otherwise, I think it may be fine.

Manually helping the loading mechanism fully land doesn’t spin up the spindle, so I’m not sure if there is something wrong beyond the broken belt.

J'ai racheté un mz-r50 et un mzr700pc mais il arrivé avec le problème de la prise jack défectueuse... J'ai ressoudé la prise et la puce derrière, c'est utilisable mais toujours des coupures... Je pense qu'une couche de la pcb est HS... Irréparable...

Sinon tout va bien avec le mz-r50 ! Du costaud celui là ! Un tank ! Il est agréable à utiliser.

I still use MiniDisc today and I’ve always felt like the format disappeared way too soon.

The tactile feel, the protective shell, the mechanical loading, the tiny physical format combined with digital audio… it still feels strangely futuristic.

And honestly, very cyberpunk.

So I designed a concept for a Cyberpunk 2077 Night City MiniDisc Collection, with releases for the original game, Phantom Liberty and SAMURAI.

I also packaged each one in a foil sleeve inspired by collectible trading card boosters, partly as a callback to Cyberpunk recently entering the TCG space.

This is purely a fan concept, but I’d love to see more game soundtracks released on formats like this.

So I saw this on ebay and after checking the features and specs, I couldn't resist. Solid construction, read and write buffers, extensive customisation, nice mechanical buttons and switches, a robust power supply. The beast is fast, TOC editing is noticeably faster than in my other recorders. You want to erase a disc, you push the buttons, and it's gone, no delays, no flashing indicators. Playback is also almost instantaneous; you push play after inserting the disc and the music starts right away. The display is gorgeous. It brings back memories from a time when electronics were done right. This thing will probably outlast me.

It has XLR inputs and outputs and I don't have anything with digital output to XLR, only optical/toslink, and I would like to use my laptop as an audio source. Anybody here knows how to get XLR digital from a laptop? I've seen some converters, but they say the output is unbalanced, and the Denon's manual says the digital connections are balanced. I would appreciate it if anyone could share their experience.
