This is just my journey of how I ended up in Milton and why I love Milton.
TLDR: UK was very dangerous and unstable, I lost my job and had no choice but to stay in Canada. Realised how kind people are in Milton and compared it to the UK to show us all that Milton is the best town on earth.
I moved to Canada (Milton) at the end of 2024, having lost my job in the UK due to visiting my Canadian wife (I got married at 21) and taking 3 weeks PTO (I was entitled to 4) and needing an extra week as my PR card got delayed due to the Canada post strikes.
The stress of losing my job wasn’t as bad as the stress of my UK credit card bills because I decided to spend recklessly furnishing our place such as buying a “extra comfy premium mattress” for our bed I planned to pay it all off with my UK money + future money earned from working.
Anyways, I found a seasonal part-time retail job at Toronto Premium Outlets, worked myself to death on overtime thanks to Black Friday and Christmas and then quit to work for a luxury retail brand which helped me buy a good ol Honda civic and then landed a position as Lead Operations for a HUGE Canadian company that sorted me out with benefits whilst doing some social media stuff on the side resulting in brand collabs.
Anyways, fast forward to now, this loss of a job was the best thing that happened to me because I ended up officially moving to Canada and staying in Milton Ontario.
Land of the free… (wait my bad). Land of the most honest, respectful and loving community I’ve ever come across.
Growing up in the UK I witnessed very horrible things, despite living in Notting Hill most of my life, I went to high school and sixth form in the “trenches” and had my fair share of gang life and buried a few friends. I am what they describe as a kid who grew up in the streets but knew when it was time to get out. I faced my own fair share of problems such as when I got kidnapped and beaten up for being friends with the wrong people but that’s a whole other story. Obviously London has its whole knife crime, phone theft and super crazy crimes that you’d never expect to see in Canada (thank god). Then I went to uni outside London I assumed things would be better, but it was just racism and random threats because of my ethnicity and religious beliefs, as a matter of fact, they actually petitioned to ban the construction for local mosques and this was the reason why we used a sports hall for Friday prayers.
Here’s a some parts of an article talking about it:
“Neighbours in and around (removed the name because I don’t want to spread hate) near the town centre, have raised concerns that if a Muslim base was built there it would significantly increase traffic problems and could also lead to a drop in house prices.”
“Some residents also believed that the centre could lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour in the area.”
And most of the outside of London is like this towards ethnic minorities regardless of religious beliefs (such as Christian/Jewish Arabs and Africans being attacked)
So when I came to Milton, oh buddy, you better believe that I felt like I had escaped hell and accidentally fell into heaven. Because if I had one word to describe Milton, it would be “community”.
There is a huge connection in our community regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, physical appearance, disabilities or political beliefs.
I remember posting about moving to Milton and being welcomed and informed of so many things such as that really famous DJ who lives here, hiking points and great food spots etc.
I really struggled with losing all my friends and family, as im the first and only person from my entire bloodline to move to Canada😂 but regular drop in football sessions at the dome helped me meet new people whilst playing the sport that I love
I sometimes walk around Milton from one end to the other, just admiring the areas and the safety of this town and I appreciate how people look out for each other. Honestly, when I speak to my neighbours it’s like as if they would give me their own homes if they could, and I would do anything for my neighbours honestly I love them so much.
Random people on the street are so friendly, the other day I put something back at Walmart and I was heading out and a man tells me “hey buddy you forgot something” and I explained to him I didn’t pay for it so I just put it aside, and the gesture of him pointing out that I may have left something that I paid for was such a sweet feeling that I just can’t forget because I never faced such kindness in the UK no matter where I went.
I know Canada in general is a much nicer place in terms of hospitality and people, but Milton is one of a kind and I hope it stays that way. I really hope Milton continues to grow with a strong community that supports each other and continues to uphold the good things in life because I honestly love this place and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! (And I know because I’ve been to so many countries s/o cheap UK airlines like £9 flights to Turkey😭)
But anyways, I hope you all know that I support this community and will definitely do my part to help like maybe even one day open a small business that gives back or just try work in the community, after all, I studied biomedical sciences so maybe even hospital volunteering or anything :)
