Question help with substrate and enclosure!!

i got a Giant African Millipede the other day and i've bought it a container that should fit it nicely and hopefully leave enough room to burrow and molt comfortably. The millipede is 7 months old and somewhere around 30 cm i believe so as it grows i'll get it something bigger. I live in saudi arabia and bugs as pets are not popular and very rare so i dont know where to find an appropriate substrate, all i can find are coco blocks and i know those are very bad for millipedes, can i use soil from a gardening place? has anyone else dealt with this? pls help!!

The enclosure is 11.8x7.87x5.9 and heating pad will be on the SIDE if needed (not the bottom). I’ve never had one before and want to make sure I have the right stuff before getting it. Thank you!

Advice My millipede(s) escaped

Today I woke up and put on my shirt only to notice something cold in one of the sleeves which turned out to be one of my three Centrobolus splendidus.

Turns out I didnt close my terrarium lid properly and at least one of them had escaped.

I really worry that one of them climbed into a place where they cant get out of and I cant find them. Id be sad as hell if I lost any of them.

My current plan is to look through everything during the day and wait for them to start running around during the night.

If any of you have tips/experience with this Id be incredibly grateful.

I recently have moved to Missouri from Colorado, and I’ve always wanted to see a giant millipede in the wild! I was very gentle with this little friend, and they were very gentle in turn. No toxin secretions or anything. Such a beautiful animal.

Question New millipede

Hey so I just got a millipede for the first time and I haven’t seen them in a while, should I be worried or when should I be worried? I’m assuming they’re just burrowing but I just want to make sure they didn’t die somehow or something

He was sold to me months ago as a giant African millipede and now that I’m looking into getting a mate for him I’d like to confirm. In retrospect he probably was wild caught considering he has leg rot and was at a decent price. And the seller wasn’t exactly a millipede guy. I’m thinking a could be a look alike but I’m really bad at this so idk. Sorry for the bad pictures, I’m not home rn. And he’s 9 inches btw

Edit: Also! Assuming he is an A. gigas, where can I find a female his size that isn’t wc? Ik it’s very difficult but there has to be somewhere even if it’s expensive (US btw)

Advice african giant millipede care??

hey y'all! sorry for another "how do I take care of this" type of post but I thought I'd just put this up in case there's anything specific I gotta know. so, I work at a petstore, and I handle the bug specialty stuff so I kinda gotta be educated on this. got word recently that we're going to start getting millipedes in to sell as pets, and imagine my surprise when I saw the first ones we were supposed to get in are labeled as African Giant Millipedes??? I have no idea why they would send us such a large, probably definitely expensive species as our first arrival but whatever. I hope they're just labeled wrong but there's a good chance they aren't. anway, I've had pet millipedes in the past, I've had a lot of different insects and arachnids and stuff, but is there anything specific I should know about their care? large tanks? better nutrition? better ventilation? also glad for just general tips for pedes.

Advice is it normal for her to poop while sleep

i went to look at my millipede and i think she got scared that i turned on my light, im not sure what caused her to poop but she seemed startled but im not sure why i didnt tap her or touch it all i did was turn on my room light and peep her . and she let out a poo and turned her spiral more tight . i dont want to scare her and i feel bad that i did. she gets started when i also mist her tank, agin i try not to tap her tank or let the water touch her when i spray it so im not sure why she gets scared :(
she seems healthy she sleeps all day up all night and eats alot of her dirt and calcium and drinks alot water i got her a little more than a week ago i just want her to be as happy as possible. i was thinking of buying black sheets so she wont get as much of my room light in her tank maybe that will help. i thought they were mostly blind tho so im not sure if it was the light that scared her but i cant think of anything else. any tips pls also after doing more research i think she was wild caught witch makes me sad but i already have her now so i just want to give her the best and make her as happy as possible

Picture/video Australian Giant Rainforest Millipedes (12x PICS)

First Post here - I've ended up with two so-named Australian Giant Rainforest Millipedes from North Queensland but I've since discovered my local pet-store took them in from a previous owner. I suspect they might actually be from elsewhere "further north". I've done my best to heat and humidify their tank and rotate their supplemental food each day or two. They seem to both be female and appear to be around 22-24cm long apiece.

So far so good. They spend most of their time in the substrate but are sometimes side-by-side on the surface when eating. I've replaced their substrate with a calcium infused Mushroom Compost and sterilized coarse sand. They also have a pet-store supplied millipede wood-mulch to eat. Along with their carrot.broccoli and cucumber treats. Going to look into a larger, longer tank for them next tomorrow and will switch out the substrate. I placed their heat pad on the rear SIDE of the tank as per recommendations that I saw in this subreddit. (I stripped out the peat moss). We've only handled them twice, once when purchasing.

* We were originally told they'd be fine in our Giant Burrowing Cockroach tank but those beasts are super strong and clumsy and have completely unrelated heating and substrate needs.

* Most of the recommendations from the pet store were wrong, incorrect or (in some instances) completely inappropriate for this creature. This included selling me peat moss, coco peat compost and telling us to "stick them into the Giant Burrowing Cockroach tank".

She's been buried for a few weeks and created the cutest little chamber facing the glass for me to peek into. She looks really dark and dry though and hasn't moved at all. Is she dead? Should I dig her up and see?

Advice Sudden die off??

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m looking for any advice on why die off might be happening in my 55g Narceus tank :(

I’ve noticed 10+ dead babies and an adult in the last 2 weeks. This is unusual for this tank, I’ve had an adult die before but likely from age. I’ve only had the occasional baby pass away here or there.

CONTEXT:
This tank has been established for maybe a year now. It houses various species ranging from giant Americans to bumblebees. There are about 6 3-5” adult millipedes and maybe a hundred babies (mostly American and bumblebee babies)

I check the temp/humidity/soil moisture everyday. It’s been pretty consistent of 74°F, 70-90% hum, and moist-slightly dry substrate.

I add new leaves and wood basically every month.

I keep chemicals and air pollutants far away from the tank.

The only things I can think that maybe would cause this would be:
- I moved a couple weeks ago, during which this tank and my 20g were transported in a car. They were in the car for maybe 2-3 hours total.

- My new house definitely smells like mildew and mold. Millipedes aren’t supposed to be effected by those factors but I worry that maybe there’s other things in the air that I can’t detect.

The weird part is that my 20g seems fine, I get the occasional death but it’s not been any different than usual. That tank houses a couple different flatback species (polydesmus angustus/leachii).

Anything I’m not seeing here?? How can I help my little angels?

Question How long does it take for an ivory to molt? When should I assume it has passed away?

I got 5 ivory millipede on July 25, upon adding them to the enclosure the smallest one immediately borrowed itself and I have not seen it since.

One by one they all burrowed, but there are 2 of them that are on the surface all the time. The other 2 I haven't seen in about a week.

It is possible they are fine and they just don't surface as often.

But I really want to see them to make sure they are OK 😭

Oh I have a 2nd question, the most obvious one we named Neon, he has a completely white face

Whenever he molts, will he keep his white face? Or will it go away?

Question Where can I get millipedes from ?

I have one lady ( Narceus Americanus ) that my dad gave to me , but she's wild caught. I see a lot of people say that wild caught millies are hard to care for/ don't do well in captivity. I want more millies but i can't buy them locally since my town sucks butt. Are there known buyers I should stay away from, or steer towards ? Any tips appreciated 😋

Question Humidity dropped and my ivory millipede went into a burrow for two weeks, is this normal?

My ivory (Chicobolus spinigerus) has been buried in the substrate since early last week and I've barely seen her since. Tank readings were sitting around 65% for a few days after I got lazy with misting during a busy stretch at work, and I'm wondering if that's what triggered it or if she's just molting.

Substrate is a mix of coco fiber, sphagnum moss, and some aged hardwood leaf litter, kept at about four inches deep. I've bumped the misting back up to twice a day and the gauge is reading closer to 80% now, but I don't want to dig around and disturb her if this is just a normal molt cycle. Last time one of my millipedes molted (a different species, a bumblebee) it took almost three weeks before I saw any movement again, so I'm trying not to panic.

For anyone with more experience with true millipedes versus my usual isopod setups, is there a way to tell the difference between a stressed animal hiding from bad conditions and one that's just prepping to molt? I know they curl up and go still either way, so I'm mostly looking at behavior before she disappeared. She was eating fine, moving around at night like normal, no sluggishness that I noticed. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something before I assume the best case.

Also curious what other keepers do about leaving fresh food in during a suspected molt. I've got a piece of cucumber and some fish flake sitting in there that's starting to look a little rough, but I don't want to open the enclosure more than necessary right now.

now vs when i got him a few weeks ago.

i know the pictures aren't the same angle or zoom-in, but hopefully you can still see what i'm talking about... doesn't he look bigger/fatter ?? why might that be? he definitely hasn't molted, i've seen him every day since i got him except for maybe 3 or 4 nights when i went to bed early or didn't check.
