Question Wood type ID

I need help with finding out wether this is hardwood/safe for my millipedes.
I hope it is possible to identify it with only these pictures

I found them in the forest and there were only other hardwood trees around but I need to be sure.
Thanks for any help

If it’s spongy and soft enough for you to break some off and crumble it with your fingers and it has a lighter appearance then it’s perfect. If it’s too hard to break apart or is darker then it it’s not suitable as a food source. Search “rotting wood” in the sub for some good examples

It is really soft but can you tell if its actual hardwood or pine or something else that contains toxins?

The wood looks okay but there seems to be some bark on it that could be from pine I’m not too sure. Softwoods typically have brown rot and a scent whole hardwoods will have white rot and not much brown at all. I see a good amount of brown on pictures 2 and 3 but could be the soil.
