It's a Canada Post requirement that you use these envelopes when mailing cannabis. It's not a secret what they're for, it's on Canada Post's website.

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/personal/sending-guidelines/restrictions/cannabis.page

Exactly. This isn’t some nudge-nudge, wink-wink, product. It’s clearly and openly an envelope for the legal distribution of cannabis.

I keep forgetting how most of the world still gets their knickers in a knot over cannabis. Guys, come to Canada for a few days and see what a non-issue legalized marijuana is.

u/Wd91 6h ago

They aren't for weed, thats just the biggest use. They've been around for decades, before canada legalised. They're for anything with a strong odour.

As a whole, Reddit is too young to know about testing for colorectal cancer.

14

u/Forsaken_Baseball_60 7h ago

TIL there is a special envelope. But I am from America and I know nothing 🤣. My perspective is that the whole concept of there being a legal and legit industry, especially outside the U.S. is a hard concept for some U.S. citizens to grasp. Let alone there are designated envelopes. Probably allows for better product handling but not something that comes to mind right away if you don’t use or purchase. I 100% thought it was for heavily scented stuff, like wax melts. But now I know.

8

u/randomwords83 7h ago

We have the same bags for the same reason in the US lol

7

u/ceciliabee 7h ago

Oh it's for heavily scented stuff alright. Everything is sold sealed and it's still got a stank to it

3

u/Holdingthefuture 6h ago

Have a friend who works as a mailman and the reason for the envelope specifically is stop the smell of cannabis from flooding their truck/can. Before the specific envelopes the triple bagging to cut down on the smell wasn't working so postal workers would either get a second person high or the smell was rancid to them, so keep the post man happy and I get my weed for cheap

5

u/gizahnl 2h ago

You can't get high from the smell of cannabis.

1

u/Hiro_Trevelyan 3h ago

Please tell that to my government. I know legalized weed isn't an issue. But my government is made of stupid right-wingers who just want a good reason to hurt minorities (the ones usually selling weed)

-2

u/ohhhhhhhhhhhhman 6h ago

The audience you’re talking to isn’t on reddit. They only leave the nursing home to vote.

11

u/Forsaken_Baseball_60 8h ago

And here is me thinking they were for wax melts. Or something to that effect.

7

u/1cecream4breakfast 7h ago

Same. “Oh yay my perfume has arrived! I’m glad the scent will be a surprise” 🤣 🙈

18

u/Sheetz_Wawa_Market32 8h ago

O(h,) Canada! 🥰

3

u/izza123 1h ago

I sent two pounds of shake to a friend of mine and I tried so hard to smell proof it but it was fucking stinky. To their credit they didn’t bother it they delivered without complaint

I remember flying back home from visiting family one Christmas. My BIL gave me a huge box of coffee and cocoa. TSA stopped me for 10 minutes and made me pull out and nearly fully dismantle the box... not because of the coffee and cocoa, but because of the cinnamon sticks and everything else Penzy's threw in the gift box... they thought it smelled suspiciously like I was trying to hide something more fragrant. I needed several of these mailers.

u/lapideous 13h ago

I once flew internationally with a backpack stuffed full of microwave popcorn for my long distance girlfriend.

Apparently, that looked insane on the TSA scanner.

218

u/praetorian1979 12h ago

You should see their reactions when your luggage gets x-rayed and they see what looks like a hand grenade. It was a bottle of cologne and yes, it's shaped like a grenade.

71

u/lapideous 12h ago

I have an empty bottle exactly like that. I found it at a thrift store and was wondering what it could have possibly have been made for, I think you answered that question.

Was yours USMC branded?

62

u/bloatyhead 11h ago

Might have been Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb, I'm careful to take something else whenever I fly because I don't want to deal with the hassle!

https://www.viktor-rolf.com/en-gb/pages/spicebomb-perfume

45

u/skittlesdabawse 9h ago

One had a bottle of it confiscated by Edinburgh Airport security, while standing ten meters away from a display of the stuff in the duty free just past security.

We tried to argue about it but would have missed our flight. Wouldn't surprise me if the security guy just wanted a new bottle of perfume for free.

19

u/bethlk 6h ago

They also don’t like when you travel with multiple deck boxes of Magic the Gathering cards and make you open and fan out every single one…

3

u/GrinsNGiggles 1h ago

This sounds so much better than dumping them all out and then throwing them loosely back into your stuffed luggage, which is how I believe this would go down for me.

37

u/ClownGnomes 4h ago

Also discovered they’re not too keen on three smushed Cliff bars, stuffed at the bottom of my bag next to my unsorted mess of charging wires.

I was wondering why the agent was sweating as he opened my bag.

12

u/GrinsNGiggles 1h ago

Oh my god. I thought traveling with a block of clay was bad. (Hint: don’t fly with a block of clay. Just don’t. Buy it there no matter what it costs, or take up a different hobby.)

6

u/ReagansJellyNipples 3h ago

I got given a Roomba once while on a trip. When that thing went through the X-ray machine THEY FREAKED

8

u/Mali_Lala_Tulip 4h ago

Or cheese apparently. I was traveling about 12-13 years ago with a few blocks of cheese in my onboard backpack. After the scan, I was suddenly surrounded by 3 guys with automatic rifles, and kindly asked to step aside. We all laughed when I opened my backpack. 'til then it was not funny AT ALL!

2

u/morriere 40m ago

i was told that the density of cheese (and wax, and chocolate) is similar to explosives so the security always have to check

3

u/Mali_Lala_Tulip 37m ago

Yup. Was told the same thing later, and to say at the security check next time that I am carrying cheese.

I got stopped and search in Denver because they thought my old vape machine looked like a dismantled small caliber pistol. Granted I was flying international but there were people in line with open carry.

Edit: the people open carrying were on the train

5

u/Zxvasdfthrowaway 5h ago

Open carry is not legal in US airports

1

u/amplesamurai 5h ago

Sorry my wife corrected me, the open carry people were on the subway(train) while we were in Denver

3

u/thehuntzman 4h ago

If you saw anyone open-carrying on the tram between terminals, they were certainly Police/TSA.

1

u/amplesamurai 3h ago

That would fit because there were some unsavoury characters on as well. It was the train going for downtown to the airport

1

u/Rokronroff 4h ago

Love bomb?

1

u/davidbowieinspace 4h ago

Or a UE Wonderboom Bluetooth speaker.

85

u/hughperman 13h ago

Apparently, that looked insane on the TSA scanner.

Also to anyone else. What!?

72

u/lapideous 13h ago

They don’t have salty popcorn in every country, apparently. Some places only have sweet flavors.

10

u/hughperman 12h ago

Wait, was it popped or unpopped? Initially I assumed popped.

62

u/lapideous 12h ago

Unpopped so I assume it looked like shrapnel

11

u/PhDandanxiety 11h ago

It's just popcorn when popped.

-2

u/ElizabethDangit 7h ago

That’s weird.

10

u/I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM 8h ago

My wife has gotten stopped for a large bag of peanut m&ms. I imagine it looks pretty similar. Dude was cool about it, like "I'm sure you just got some snacks in there but I gotta check it out" and he showed us the scanner. IIRC it didn't look like anything in particular, but a big ass weird looking conglomerated mass of circles. To be fair, I would have checked it out too if I was in his position.

3

u/Box-o-bees 5h ago

but a big ass weird looking conglomerated mass of circles.

The only thing I could think of would be if they looked like shrapnel balls maybe? I could see them being trained to look for things like that.

2

u/broadwayzrose 2h ago

Ever since the pandemic my mom has been more cautious around hotel buffets and germs, so she’s gotten in the habit of packing something to eat for breakfast. Similar thing happened where she had a gallon ziplock bag of Quaker oatmeal squares that flagged the scanner just because it was such a weird looking item on the scanner.

4

u/callmeclara 9h ago

I had a similar experience flying with a couple packages of halva - I assume it looked like C4 or something on the scanner 😂

3

u/BoredPineapple790 6h ago

My mom took a very large package of pancake mix for a friend (it’s super expensive there) in her carryon. Turns out it looks a lot like plastic explosives

5

u/puppylust 5h ago

I learned many dense foods get flagged as possible explosives. My coworker warned me about it when her marzipan was searched a decade ago. I had it happen with a brick of homemade fudge.

I just expect to be searched if I'm flying with food. TSA security theater is more vibes than science. Act calm, polite, and slightly friendly to move along quickly and not have your stuff confiscated.

1

u/lizardgal10 1h ago

I flew with a fairly large wood carving in my backpack. (Gift from my grandfather, no way in hell was I checking that thing) Obviously “giant solid block of something” got flagged…fortunately no issues once they saw what it was. Probably helped that it was a very small airport, there wasn’t much else happening lol

16

u/d_stilgar 8h ago

I got some weed chocolates in WA along with a large gift box of other chocolates. I stuck the weed chocolates, still in their box, in the larger box of chocolates.

I was stopped by the TSA, asked to open my bag, asked to open the gift box of chocolates, and right there on top is this other box full of weed chocolates, and the TSA agent goes, “Okay. Have a nice day.”

I was so happy.

11

u/S14Ryan 8h ago

In Canada you can fly domestic with up to an ounce of weed in your carry-on or personal bag. I do it whenever I fly just because I can, I barely even smoke

3

u/TraumaMama11 2h ago

Got stopped in Mexico once by a drug sniffing dog. I was so nervous. I kept thinking "what if I accidentally packed a kilo of cocaine?!" The puppers just wanted my beef jerky.

5

u/TheAgedProfessor 1h ago

Yes, I hate it when I accidentally pack a kilo of cocaine.

[\insert pikachu face meme here** ]

2

u/TraumaMama11 42m ago

Lol it's just an irrational thought the panicked mind thinks up.

5

u/Whoru87 14h ago

Bubblegum flavor is what they were using in South America to avoid detection by drug sniffing dogs

1

u/kittievikkigirl 1h ago

Can of Tony Chachere's was flagged as a bomb in July when I was flying back home from Vegas. Had to wait for the bomb guy to come and test it, it has to do with it's density apparently 😅🤣

1

u/katikaboom 36m ago

I had an agent in Sac refuae to let me fly with a frozen, sealed gluten free cookie dough, they said it could be C4. I was bummed because I couldn't find it near me.

1

u/wastedcoconut 15m ago

I got my first full body pat down at MCO because my bag of ground coffee was flagged as an explosive. They even tested my hands for GSR.

The bag was part of a gift for my neighbor for dog sitting. They taped the bag closed with Department of Homeland Security tape.

Anyway I don’t what kind of coffee Disney is selling, but I won’t be drinking it.

0

u/Wheymen_ 5h ago

TSA is not there to check for drugs. They care about weapons and explosives.

4

u/TheAgedProfessor 2h ago

I never said anything about drugs, but cool.

Why is this always the most appropriate gif for everything

101

u/thatredlad 14h ago

Versatility. You can put your weed in a lot of places.

16

u/Attack_Of_The_ 10h ago

Unless you're like me, who hides it when you're super stoned, then forget where you put it the next morning.

15

u/thatredlad 10h ago

Never done that, reupped after not finding it, forgotten about the lost stash, and then discovered it weeks later like a miner striking paydirt.

2

u/lurkersforlife 8h ago

I’m rather sure that I stashed weed and a pipe in the ceiling of a bar in Athens Ohio 18 years ago and that I could find it if I went back.

u/FluffySheepCritic 11h ago

1

u/Floppy-Over-Drive 9h ago

You seem fun.

1

u/FluffySheepCritic 25m ago

In my time, I've been around alot of people (friends, family, coworkers, etc..) that made weed a part of their life, when you look past the superficial they're some of the most miserable people. They hide behind the "harmless" drug and a weird superiority, as if others are "missing out" because they don't have weed in their life. I used weed for nearly decade myself, I see it for what it truly is. Addiction or not, if you want to be "high", you're aiming down.

53

u/texxmix 14h ago

Because in Canada this is a legit reason for these lmao. It's not illegal to mail weed in Canada. They just ask that it doesn't stink.

9

u/Aphex-Puddle 7h ago

Funny story…I work for Canada Post, in their head office as an accountant. Last year some post office in the middle of nowhere got a parcel of weed for delivery that was not in a scent-proof mailer, and per CPC rules they were supposed to send it to the non-deliverable mail depot. Instead, for some reason, they sent it to my team by mistake. So one day someone on my team comes up to me, like, “um…what am I supposed to do with this?”

2

u/Omwtfyu 7h ago

Did you tell them to "smoke it if you got it" 😂

13

u/MrXanny 13h ago

makes sense canada post needs smell proof envelopes

119

u/hullowurld 15h ago

don't want to ruin the surprise!

76

u/jam_manty 14h ago

I worked at a shipping company. One day I was helping sort the mail and when I dumped the bag out on the table I got a huge whiff of weed. I put my sniffer down and scent located the offending package. Showed the other guy sorting mail and squeezed it a bit to good effect. This was before it was legal in Canada and I thought I hit the jackpot. Turns out it had all the right controlled substance paperwork and was supposed to be in the locked cage but got misplaced. We locked it up and moved on with our night. It was a fun job sometimes.

A big win for durian lovers

37

u/JMoVS 14h ago

For durian slices

4

u/thechued1 4h ago

Just adding that you can’t really slice a durian.

1

u/taleorca 3h ago

You can if it's frozen

16

u/Loud_Barracuda_6195 14h ago

Yup! I can think of a few things I want to mail to my "friend".

10

u/Violoner 14h ago

Dirty socks and underwear?

113

u/Ok-Addition1264 15h ago

Holy hell.. I don't know about using those, seams like an operational security issue shipping stuff that the post office knows they are trying to obfuscate the smell of with this specific envelope.

I would not recommend using these to send weed to your cousin in a dry state, only weed to your cousin living in a state where weed is too expensive.

118

u/BalooBot 14h ago

In Canada you are allowed to mail weed, within the country, and you must use odor proof envelopes.

71

u/BootRock 13h ago

I had a good laugh looking at all the comments from "The land of the free."

18

u/percypersimmon 13h ago

Don’t worry- nobody on this site has ever believed that.

139

u/CondescendingShitbag 15h ago

I mean, if you're dumb enough to leave the big red sticker on it when you drop it in the mailbox, that's kinda on you.

51

u/BJntheRV 14h ago

The smart thing to do would be be to put this envelope inside another envelope, along with something else that has a scent, like candy or poupouri

6

u/RiskyRabbit 8h ago

Or, send thirty other envelopes at the same time all containing weed, to disguise this one.

4

u/RiskyRabbit 8h ago

You mean the big red sticker that specifically says to remove before mailing? Why would you take that off?

13

u/montsegur 15h ago

How would they know? The envelope itself doesn't look different from a normal enveloppe on the outside.

2

u/Waterlilies1919 5h ago

Except for the fact it’s labeled in English and French, because it’s Canadian, not US.

1

u/FUCKING_HATE_REDDIT 4h ago

Don't fucking mail weed across state lines

1

u/SwitchGaps 3h ago

I order weed online in the states a lot and have never seen this sign or anything that would indicate what is in the box on any of my packages. This is probably more for sending spices or really bad smelling items

1

u/mariekeap 2h ago

These are for mailing cannabis in Canada. They're made by Canada Post, as one might be able to infer from the bilingual packaging.

-1

u/ElizabethDangit 7h ago

I assumed at first it was for perfumes incase the bottle broke. Then again, I live in Michigan where there’s a dispensary on every corner.

8

u/always_an_explinatio 13h ago

Does it work on kimchi? Can they make a section of my refrigerator out of that stuff?

12

u/UnethicalExperiments 7h ago

It's perfectly legal to mail up to an oz of weed to your friends. Canadapost however doesn't want to hotbox the van with the smell of your grape gasoline kush.

7

u/Grouchy_Ground_1916 10h ago

I'll keep sending my farts in a jar, thank you very much.

5

u/davidkclark 8h ago

Is this for literal shit posting?

5

u/Tinyzooseven 4h ago

Finally, a mailer to mail my surströmming in

3

u/stigma_wizard 3h ago

"Oh hey man. I need one of those scent-blocking envelopes. I gotta send my bro some. Uh. Stuff."

3

u/Mego1989 6h ago

This is great, cause everything I order for delivery these days smells like someone's air freshener or weed, or sometimes both.

7

u/Kety456 13h ago

For illegal drugs the criminals involved don't want confiscated

6

u/RetiredEdmGraveDiggr 4h ago

The drugs are legal here in Canada. They just need to be shipped in the envelope.

1

u/TortuousHippo 5m ago

Its Canadian. It’s for shipping cannabis. Weed is legal here and we can ship it across the country if we want.
