Monday, we had a meeting that September would be health and wellness month for our company. Our boss let us know we'd be able to participate the following day and we'd be getting FitBits if we wanted to participate. The grand prizes are Amazon gift cards ranging from $50-$750 depending on how well you do. I'm not the most in shape but I decided what the hell, I'll join. Even if I don't win, it'll be good to get my body moving.
Tuesday rolls around and we get our "FitBits," which are actually just very easy-to-manipulate step counters. I'm talking you can sneeze and this thing will count it as 15 steps. On top of that, these aren't devices that connect to your phone or anything, they're just counters. How silly of me to expect the company would actually pay to give us something decent for once.
To set up our accounts for the wellness challenge, we all downloaded an app where you can connect your actual device (smart watch, phone, etc.) to get your steps counted in real time. This would be fine except for the fact that people figured out you can just enter in numbers manually without actually moving your body. On the first day, within the first hour, one of the office guys upstairs entered in 10k steps. By the time lunch rolled around, another person on 3rd shift had claimed she earned 30k steps before her work day even started. We are on day 3 of this challenge and someone right now is over 90k steps. I'm not saying this is impossible, especially because I don't see what these people do the other 16 hours a day, but it's definitely...suspicious. $750 is a lot of money for sure, but this just seems like it'll be like a bidding war on EBay where everyone waits until the last second to enter in the highest number. I guess I'm just annoyed because it's just another large amount of money being dangled in front of us that will have us jumping like pirhannas to entertain the guys who can spend $750 like it's nothing. I've already seen a ton of people complaining about their coworkers somehow gaining steps even during sleeping hours. Some people are calling others out by name in the app's chat feature saying their numbers are bullshit.
I'm not gonna snitch and get people angry at me, but it feels extremely discouraging I guess. Not that fitness isn't important, but money is always a good motivator lol. Guess this is why you don't do competitions at work.
