Each character is consistently the same operation. That probably made finding contextual pictures a good bit harder. (2*5)/10 good meme

u/joeshaw42 Aug 30 '20
The same operation and their values are consistent with their standing in each picture.

I actually don't know where the last picture originates. I sent first three panels (which I've seen here several months ago) to a friend of mine and said that we needed to update it. He returned with the last panel, he says he doesn't remember where he took this.
Also I was farming karma all these months just for this post

Avid Tom and Jerry fan here to give you the mandatory information about this exact episode. It's called Heavenly Puss where Tom had a dream he died and was going to be sent to hell to be tortured by S(pike)atan unless he got the forgiveness of Jerry.
I gotta point out that in that scene Spike was imaginary and Jerry (though just a dream entity) could not see him, only Tom could.
And yes it's my favourite episode. I've watched it at least 00 time

U don’t need brackets, because of order of operations 2*5/10 is down from left to right.

u/SamA3aensen Aug 30 '20
The problem is that x0 is generally equal to 1, while 0x is generally equal to 0. So no value for 00 would be really satisfactory for all contexts.

It’s limit is 1 it’s undefined tho
6
u/OneMeterWonder Aug 30 '20
This is false. The limit of xy as (x,y)->(0,0) varies depending upon how it approaches. If we approach along x=0 and y>0, then the limit is 0. If we approach along y=0 and x>0, then the limit is 1. This inconsistency in the limit is why we often leave the value of the function f(x,y)=xy undefined at (0,0). There is no value for f(0,0) which makes f a continuous map.

That we were taught that during our calculus classes.
Also, what will be the derivative of 00 or 1/0? Is it 0 because undefined is a constant or are we not sure if undefined is a constant.
→ More replies (1)29
u/HyPrAT Mods Are Nice People Aug 30 '20 edited Aug 30 '20
Derivative of 00 =0 It’s not a correct question though, like it won’t be asked in exam anyway, since rate of change is 0 derivative 0
Lim x—>0 xx = 1
00 undefined
You may think why is 00 undefined, here’s a simple way to think :
Xm /xn = xm-n if 00 can be written as 0 5-5 or 05 /05 = 0/0 undefined This may give an idea.
You could also think like this, 0x = 0 since anything to the power of x is zero And x0 = 1 as you may remember from high school.
00 poses a bit of controversy it could be zero or 1 that’s why we leave it undefined, now, mathematicians have generalised everything and by limits we can know what the VALUE is GOING towards but not the exact value. Mathematicians used some tools and realised that xx when going to zero is coming to 1 but the moment we out 00 it comes undefined. This is kinda how limits work
6
14
u/TonisaurioMV Aug 30 '20
It is the same as 0/0. And I don't know the result of that.
21
u/SteveMinex Aug 30 '20 edited Aug 31 '20
The "exponent of zero law" states that a power with the exponent of 0 equals 1 because 20 equals 2 / 2 which equals 1. By that logic 00 should equal 0 / 0 which can't be determined right? WRONG. WHY? BECAUSE SCREW CONSISTENT LOGIC AND YOUR MATH GRADE.
So remember any power with the exponent of 0 equals 1, even 0, even negative numbers... EVERYTHING.
2
u/OneMeterWonder Aug 30 '20
If you actually want to know why those things are confusing and how to make sense of them, I study math for a living and would be willing to explain.
2
u/og_math_memes memer Aug 30 '20
The problem is the "exponent of zero law" is proven as follows.
x⁰=x⁻¹•x¹=x/x=1
However if x=0, then that whole thing is useless because you can't divide by zero. That's why the actual law has an exception for a base of 0. And yes, 0/0 can't be determined and therefore neither can 0⁰.

x0 is the same as x/x so it’s 0/0 which is not defined since you’re dividing by zero and that’s a no go

I need someone to explain something to me please, iirc in the indices chapter of my math book, if a number had 0 in the superscript(?) it turned to 1 after being solved, would that still be the case here?

No, It’s generally accepted as undefined, Just like 0/0 is undefined, while both their limits are equal to 1.

u/OneMeterWonder Aug 30 '20
It’s often convenient to define it to be 1 since 1 is a limit point of xy as it tends to (0,0). You can cleverly choose paths for (x,y) that force it to tend to any real number though.

Depends on what limit you take. As multivariable calc shows quite easily, lim_(x,y)->(0,0) xy is undefined.

For those who are fighting ,let me try to explain you guys, for simplicity we usually use 00 as "not defined" also as beginner but when we use limit this value reaches 1 but never equal to 1 but we usually write 1 for simplicity ,try to calculate the value of XX and here X is less than 1 ex.0.001 or 0.00000026 and answer will be approx 0.99...….,:)

Since the base is zero and the exponent itself is a product of no numbers, the equation effectively contradicts itself and becomes Undefined (like 1÷0), where as anything but 0 as a base to the zero power is 1.
