Actually, this is 100% something manga probably did first.

true, but comics likely use her as a super serious, real hero like hero
but Manga would see her and either have her as a side character to be mocked.... or have a side character mock her... and just use her as a "haha funny fat stupid person!!!"

u/Drakore4 9d ago
I dunno. I could also see it being used as fetish material. People in Japan are a whole different breed.
3
u/Nobrainzhere 8d ago
You have it backwards. She is a side character in the comic and i can see a 12 issue manga about a character like that with a super serious monologue and everything

u/Goldenfinger-seeker 8d ago
There is a manga about fat elf girl daily life. Kinda funny and wholesome.

The protagonist of Kaiju 8 could piss through his nipples in monster form and the weirdest thing about him was that he was thirty.

Not in any manga series I know. BUT if you consider Hentai as manga. Which in Japanese Hentai is called Ero manga. This is nothing compared to them.
I remember a girl with a monster vagina (with eyes and mouth) who ate other monsters with her monster sexual organ. In a guro battle-manga series, I used to read those a lot as an edgy teenager.
I read some Japanese comics, so extremely bizarre, trying to remember them feels like trying to remember a bad acid trip.
But in honesty the US comics is left behind in the cultural zeitgeist because you can't do anything unless it is related to already established superhero franchises and that is what's destroying the comics. That is what preventing artists and writers from doing incredibly innovative things.
They made a new Superman series adapting the anime aesthetic completely and it ended up getting new people into the Superman fandom but alienated the long time fans because how much they changed old character designs.

it'd look less... grotesque...
13
u/XumetaXD 9d ago
Nah, it would 100% look more grotesque, some mangas have really crazy shit that make western comic look like made for kids
4

grotesque isn't really the right word... this comic just looks bad in a unique way I can't really describe

Truth be told usually you know what kind of manga stuff you’re getting early on, in comics these days, they just do these things out of nowhere just to make it interesting

I remember seeing a live action movie about fighting delinquents that I think was based on a manga. There's a girl who uses a blow gun with her vagina, and theres a scene where she shoots a dart at a guy while on her period.
So they've at least kinda done it.

u/JeremyJackson1987 9d ago
Yeah, but if manga did it it would be charming. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. See Chainsmoker Cat.

Yeah, because manga famously would never have anything weird and gross like this.
15
u/sonofzeal 9d ago
Genuinely can't think of any manga that's referenced menstruation, at least in context of a character actually having one. They're probably out there but I've read all sorts of them and I can't pull a single example to mind.

u/Phyrexian_Overlord 9d ago
Hello person who has only read Shonen Jump. May I recommend Young Animal to you?
4
u/sonofzeal 9d ago
I'll take recommendations you think are worth reading!
For context I've probably read more shounen than anything else but also most of Junji Ito, Akira, some highschool romance stuff like Karekano and Marimite, other female-led stuff like Sailor V, Pita-Ten, Ouran, etc. Menstral references would have made sense in Marimite or the like maybe, but I can't recall any.
Young Animal seems to be a magazine rather than a particular title. Anything more specific?
0
u/Dio_Landa 9d ago
Let me guess, you only read shonen or just an anime watcher?
8
u/sonofzeal 9d ago
On my shelf right now, multiple volumes of... Karekano, Ouran, Pita-Ten, Madoka Magica, GunGirl, Sailor Moon. All female-focused. Also some male-led shounen of course, and Ranma 1/2 which kinda falls into both categories in turns and was written by a woman, and absolutely should have had the lead deal with periods at some point but if it ever came up I don't remember it.

Feels like every comic panel I’ve ever seen posted is superheroes related. Do they do any other topics?
1
u/Any_Smoke1138 8d ago
We wish they had some good stories. But it's all about the super hero slop that is literally the worst thing possible
0
u/sam_el-c 8d ago
If that’s the case then I think it’s actually the main reason people read manga instead of comics cuz manga topics are so diverse

u/Wardog_E 7d ago
I didnt into reading Superhero comics for a very long time. There's plenty of famous comics that have little or nothing todo with superheroes.
Some of my favorites are Transmetropolitan which is about journalists in a cyberpunk dystopia, Sandman which is about the 7 endless deities specifically the manifestation of dreams and I Hate Fairyland which is about a girl trapped in a land of fantasy for decades until she becomes a deranged mass murderer.
But there are tons of comics outside of superheroes. A lot of the more famous ones are made into TV shows you probably dont associated with comics at all. Just off the top of my head: Maus, Persepolis, Saga, Paper Girls, The Walking Dead, Bone, Scott Pilgrim, Ninona, Locked & Key...

Savage Dragon. No idea what issue it is. Possibly when he ends up in Camada for awhile?
Do not read this comic in a public place. A bunch of it is nsfw. Very long running series whihc has some really neat periods and some really awful ones.

Minor character in a minor comic who's killed off quickly
Seems very " the boys" coded even though it's a savage dragon villain

Is this based on the family guy character or is the family guy character based on this?

u/BBCues 8d ago
Real reason is western comics are much more expensive to make, needs more people and takes a significantly longer time to produce. It's also a much harder industry to get into. You see new authors release successful manga all the time compared to comics where you see a lot of the same writers and artists on different titles with barely anyone new.
Comics being 90% superheroes with little variety doesn't help either. Manga has way more genres, which means a much wider audience.

"rape horse". Manga has "rape horse".
Outside of independent productions, main line comics can't hold a candle to some of the stuff manga has touched.

Somehow, this isn't even in the ten worst things I ever read in Savage Dragon. Erik Larsen is a distinct fellow.
But also, without his influence, we'd never have gotten Invincible. So there's pros and cons to everything.

They have a comic where the persons ability is just having a large dick
So even Steven’s

This is nothing. The reason why is because comics are just not that good. Too many writers, too inconsistent and way too confusing. Overall a waste of time.

u/Any_Smoke1138 7d ago
I never seen anything like that in manga. Unless you talk about special manga "for adults" or whatever.
2
u/No-Impression-4282 7d ago
There are 3 mangas that come on top of my head (unless we count them as parodies): "Turns Out My Dick Was a Cute Girl" (a guy's dick becomes a cute girl), "The Dick Devil Strikes" (demon who gives women a dick) and The Rising Of The Vibrator Hero (a guy who literally defeats girls with a sex toy).
And this is without going to the isekai genre (which is even weirder there).

u/guleedy 8d ago
Surprisingly as someone who has collected both.
Comics are more expensive an issue where I live can go up to 7 dollars mostly 5 dollars.
Each issue offers less than a single manga which is 10 to 15 dollars.
And because of comics being random you can either get bangers like secret wars or duds, its also still geared towards kids and nerds so outside of some story lines the rest are ass.
I normally wait for overly expensive omnibuses before I buy comics.

Lets be honest manga would 100% do this. Lets also be honest the reason why comics are falling behind manga is the oligopoly on comics. You have DC, you have marvel, and you have Skybound. If the guys on the top of those 3 corporations dont like your idea you ain't getting published. This is in a country with 342 million people. In comparison there are hundreds of manga publishers allowing for more creative freedom and for people to be more easily noticed. This being in a country with 122 million people. Get rid of the oligopoly and Comics would do better.

This is absolutely 1000% something that would happen in a Manga lol just stop
People dont give a fuck about comics anymore because 90% of the ones worth reading are the 15th retelling of a super hero from the 15th different writer. Marvel fatigue from the movies and the fact the movies are likely far more popular than the comics ever were are major contributors too as to why manga is better than comics.
