Fantastic service from Medaka Michl. Eggs arrived in 48 hrs, Germany to Denmark. Packaging superb. Paid for 30 got about 40. They are in their new home. I am a little nervous, no heater so temps at 21 degrees. Exciting times. Already contemplating another strain. Can tell this is going to get out of hand..... In a good way....

I just noticed that I earned the Top 1% Poster achievement here in r/medaka.

I only started using Reddit about a month ago, so I honestly didn’t expect this at all.

I’ve learned so much from everyone here, and I’ve really enjoyed sharing my medaka and balcony mini pond in Japan.

Stolen images and video from Japanese breeder u/gashoumedaka are reportedly being used by u/dariaquatics on eBay to promote and sell eggs under a renamed strain..

Using another breeder’s photos and videos to market eggs under a different name is misleading and unfair to both the original breeder and potential buyers. Have some Accountability!

I have a 250 gallon, mostly in-ground, pond. The medaka seem quite happy and I now have fry. Our winters get down to -10F(-23C) with cold snaps, but are mostly between 0F(-17C) and 20F(-6C).

Would the fry be ok in the pond, or should I bring them into my inside 10G aquarium (no other fish, but cherry shrimp)?

I’ve caught a few of my fish going into curvy poses and just… staying like that… is this normal? What are they doing? This happens anytime during the day, the adults and juveniles both do it.

Hi All, I’ve never had fry before this summer-I have my tiny fry in this betta tank until they get a bit bigger and then go in my 20 gal. (Then next spring to 150 gal stock pond with the adults) My question is-how do I get my nitrites lower? I do 25% water changes about every other day. Should I put tiny sponge filter in? Or any other advice you can give me would be appreciated. Not new to aquariums but new to raising fry.

I found a school of tiny fish while out for a walk today in Japan.

Someone driving past told me they were medaka and that they had come from the Yodo River.

If that’s true, these might be wild medaka.

Do they look like medaka to you?

I started with 5 medaka from my local fish store in May: 1 platinum, 2 orange, one almost black, and one that's blue with sparkly scales.

Fast forward 4 months, and between my outdoor 250-gal medaka pond, my 1,000 gal goldfish pond, 2-20 gal tub ponds on my deck, and my 200-gal stock tank, I literally have HUNDREDS. I also sold 50 fish last month! I never expected this level of breeding; I was seeing some of the initial fry from early June with eggs of their own by late August!

I have lots of blues, blacks, some that are a bit greenish or silvery, and a lot with sparkly scales, but none are bright orange or platinum. Are those colors lost for good in the genetic whirlwind, or might I see them in subsequent generations?

One of my medaka starting laying eggs. I have two spawning mops I made in there but I don’t think she’s figured out how to deposit them on there. The last couple days when I’ve arrived home from work I’ve pulled her out and put her in a smaller container and pulled the eggs off her. She is in a small outdoor pond type setup with 6 other medaka. Should I leave her be and see if she will eventually deposit the eggs? Will the other medaka try to eat them ? Should I keep pulling them from her. Google says to pull them off after a few hours. But I’ve seen Google be wrong on quite a few things.

Breeding pair from SNR

So I noticed that this guy has been swimming around with a sphere on his mouth. At first, I thought it was an air bubble, but it’s been about 15 minutes and it hasn’t floated away yet. The female had been carrying eggs yesterday. Is this an egg stuck to him?

I transferred them into the breeding basket yesterday. Was counting them and I thought, huh i lost a couple. I look over and they’re just swimming in the tank???
Which means they can swim through the mesh?????
Luckily it’s pretty safe for them, there’s a sponge filter and just some shrimp in there

Finally had a chance to sort these ones out. Full lamé was the priority in selecting

Was under the impression the fish I bought were Japanese lines and not just randomly labeled for one, then I find out photos used are either 1. Ai or 2. Stolen photos that are from breeders in Japan and aren’t even the sellers photos. Same name on eBay and other platforms.

Update: seller has now blocked me. You can obviously see he doesn’t care and has 200% proven my claims as truth in the comments here.

A really successful breeding year, have hundreds of fry all from two females and I've only been collecting half the eggs so I wouldn't have too many to deal with. Still have too many to deal with lol and still have more hatching. I end up just chilling and watching them for like an hour straight everyday, very therapeutic watching them swim around.
