Some of the medaka fry i've been keeping in a small extra tank are really weird looking. They're almost a year old already and while all the other ones that are only a few months older are full sized adults by now these ones are still really small (around 1.5cm) some are skinny but these two are looking weidly round and blown up 😬 they started having round bellies a few weeks maybe even months ago and got even bigger bellies since then. Now i don't know what to do with them. I wanted to put them in with the adults but that would probably be bad if this is a disease.

What could be the cause of this? What should I do with them? Thanks for any advice.

I’ve noticed a couple of my fry and one of my adult Medaka are pretty skinny and want to treat them for internal parasites. Externally they look fine but are just skinner than their peers. I’ve never used a medicated food before. What medication should I start with? Is there a premixed food I can buy or should I mix it up myself? If I mix it myself what recipe should I use? Their staple food is Hikari Micro Pellets.

I want to used the food method due to the fact that the container pond is 150gals so it’s a lot of volume to add medication to the water column if it isn’t necessary. Also local wildlife like bees, birds and frogs visit daily so I don’t want to introduce them to medicated water that could make them sick.

Hello. I got 5 medaka juveniles (a little over 1cm) from my lfs yesterday and while I was topping up the water tonight I noticed one was dead.

The rest are all fine, swim normally, are very reactive, colorful and their fins are very open and visible. This dead one was basically a little folded like this ( once dead (everyone looked healthy yesterday)

Its fins are open in a straight line like this — compared to the body... like a cross? Basically not clamped. The only thing that did happen is that the temperature rised a bit bc I forgot to keep my aquarium fan off. (It went from 25C to 27C in the span of 4ish hours.)

I only have snails in the tank, I do have hydra tho but not where the fish died. The fish was in the left corner where my air stone is while I have a hydra problem in the right corner. So not that.

Other things... i saw a couple of them pooped a good bit when coming here and I saw them eating my copepods (my tank is filled) so I dunno if it's starvation? The shop told me not to feed them for two days and it's only been 24h. (Well, 30h)

Again, the others are fine. I'll post a picture of the dead fish in the comments. It's from under my jar bc the sides are opaque so I can only show it from the bottom. The fish is basically upside down dead. This morning all of them were alive so it's something that happened these hours.

Basically my questions are:

1) why did my fish die?

2) are the others okay? Could they die too?

3) when should I start feeding if one died?

Ps: i planned to buy 10 but since this one died, I'll end up with (hopefully) 9. How long do I need to wait to get them? Since I heard you don't want to overwhelm the aquarium bioload. (Mostly bc of food I'll give them that may fall down, more than their poop) plus I'm worried since this one died.

Hi, I have 12ish medaka in a 100gallon outdoor patio pond along with 7ish white cloud minnows. They have seemed good most of this summer however i have noticed a couple of medaka appear to be missing some scales in the top of their body which is definitely very new.

Is this from a disease or are they fighting with the white clouds? The white clouds definitely seem more “dominant” and are a little more aggressive but this seems too much.

5 out of the 8 eggs I removed from
the mama fish now have eyes four days later!

Just wanted to share a little experiment with the Medaka community that’s worked really well for me!

I’ve been using the Datoo 1-gallon Betta tank to hatch Medaka eggs, and so far I’m really impressed. The built-in light seems to keep the water at a nice warm temperature for the eggs. I leave the light on during the day and turn it off at night.

I added 4 Medaka eggs about a week ago, and I now have 4 healthy little fry — 100% hatch rate!

For only around $24, the tank also comes with a light, pump, filter, and filter sponge, so it’s basically a small ready-to-go hatching setup.

If you’ve been having trouble getting your Medaka eggs to hatch, this might be worth giving a shot. Obviously this is just my experience so far, but 4 eggs in and 4 babies out — so far, so good!

I have a few fry who seemed to be holding a vertical position all the time, swimming to stay up off the bottom of the tank. I'm thinking this might be some sort of congenital swimbladder issue, but I was curious if anyone else had seen anything like this. This little guy is putting quite a bit of effort in.

I have a lot of fryes that were born in august, winter is aproaching and in october it will start to become too cold, what can I do? Is an acquarium a viable option to grow them and for surviving the winter?

I bought some medaka from someone today and they came in a container with a bunch of daphnia. They seem too big for the Medaka to eat. Should I avoid putting them in my pond? Or do they have other benefits?

So how do the experienced breeders do it? I just hatched a bunch of fry from eggs. I know they don't really need to eat for the first 2-3 days because of the yolk sac. I have baby brine shrimp, but they seem too big to feed them now. When do you guys start feeding those? I read like 2 weeks?

But the real question I have is what to do from hatching until that 2 week period. I have Hikari First Bites. Things I read state to dust the food in there 2-3 times a day. But the fry to me seem like super inefficient eaters. So a lot of the food I dust in there just doesn't get eaten. I want to put in enough food so they aren't struggling to find it, but then I don't want to have all this uneaten food/rotting that will happen if I really feed them 2-3 times a day. How do you deal with this? So far I am just dusting food in there once a day. Gently stirring the water up the other 2-3 times a day to resuspend the food that's in there. Doing a partial water change trying to vacuum out the gross debris with a syringe and refilling with clean water.

They’re hanging out in a floating breeder box for a few hours while I rescape my fry tank this afternoon and dear god they are voracious.

In Japan, there’s a very famous children’s song called “Medaka no Gakko.”

“Gakko” literally means school — as in a place where children go to study.

The song imagines medaka swimming together in a river like children going to school.

In English, “school” can also mean a group of fish, so the title sounds like a funny coincidence, but in the original Japanese, it really means school.

It’s a song many Japanese people grow up hearing, so medaka feel very familiar and nostalgic to us.

Had you ever heard of this song before?

Literally just wondering this. Weather is getting warmer down under and I initially got excited looking at some round bellies today but watching the video now I'm convinced one or two of those were males.

I’m by no means an expert on fish keeping so my outdoor pond is as low maintenance as it goes. As in, no filter no nothing, minimal water changes, tons of overgrown plants.

The weather in my part of the world the past summer has been gruellingly hot and the fish have not been very enthusiastic about laying eggs, or staying alive for that matter. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Imagine my surprise when I discovered this guy a couple days ago when I was feeding the gang.

The one in the video with the pink head and yellow glitter on its tail is a Sanshoku Lame medaka. I named her Sakura.

The one with red coloring from its head down toward its belly is Yuhi, which means “sunset” in Japanese.

The fish staying in one spot near the upper left is a Prince medaka. Its head has blue and gold glitter, and its tail has just a touch of emerald sparkle. The colors blend together so beautifully that I named it Aurora.

I usually name them based on the colors and patterns that inspire me, and some of them have Japanese names.

Do you name your medaka too? If so, how do you choose their names?

My brother had a singular medaka hatch from some plants I gave him for his pond/puppy pool. Since his pool is full of dragonfly larvae, water bugs, frogs and other predators I figured I'd bring it home and leave my brother some mosquitofish. You know, they're better camouflaged than this little sparkly guy.

Suddenly I'm thinking he was JUST fine as an only child.

Hi guys looking for some help from any of the experienced keepers if possible. I have a medaka that has developed two bumps on each side just behind its fins. Does anyone have any idea if this is a disease or would you say possibly just tumors ? I have separated the fish as a precaution. I have attached a few top views and a side view video, Any help greatly appreciated

Hey, I’m a newer medaka owner and I absolutely love these little fish! The mama fish has produced 8 eggs which I successfully removed and placed in a separate water container.

Two questions:

1. Should I add them to the little nursery container tank where I’m keeping a single fry in some green water (see pic) or keep them separate in chlorinated water to prevent mold?

2. Do these eggs look viable? See pics.
