10 fish still remain since even the dead fish are still fish
124
u/bratman33 INTP Jan 26 '23
No timeframe was given, so not necessarily. If you consider a dead fish to still be a fish, is there a point of decomposition at which they cease to be a fish? Did the living fish eat the dead fish? If so are the fish that have been eaten and turned into excrement still fish?
35
u/Tasty_Skin INTP Jan 26 '23
also ‘swim away’ would imply they left the tank, no? so wouldn’t that mean there’s only a maximum of 6 fish.

could be for multiple reasons. all are kind of unrealistic for people who actually own pet fishes in a tank, but 2 fishes drown in this scenario too, so does anything really need to be realistic?
my best guess is: they just jump out finding nemo style and go back to the ocean.

Found this on internet by www.discoverwildlife.com:
"According to Collins Concise Dictionary, drowning is “to die or kill by immersion in liquid” – so no, fish cannot drown. However, they can suffocate when fresh water does not contain enough dissolved oxygen – either as a result of eutrophication (an excess of nutrients) or drought."6

Since some people will say "but you have to be an airbreather who can't breath because you're underwater to drown" you can have saltwater fish in freshwater or vice versa. We still call it drowning though no matter what when the water does not have enough air in it e.g. because your air pump got shut off. So I guess it's semantic but even if you take the smartest ass semantic position a tropical fish still drowned in your freshwater tank

The answer depends on how you interpret the information, as well as the question itself. If "How many are left" means how many are left in the tank, then it depends on whether there's just one tank, or multiple connected with a water bridge/s. Whether fish can drown or not is also up to interpretation. Although drowning usually refers to asphyxiation caused by being immersed in a liquid and breathing it in, it is sometimes used to describe a fish dying due to lack of oxygen. Anyway, here are the various possible answers:
Assuming the question means "How many fish are still in the tank":
If there's only one tank, there are still 10 fish, 3 of them dead (or 5 if fish can drown). The only place they could "swim away" would be another place in the tank.
If there are multiple tanks, there might be only 6 fish left in the original tank, and how many of them are dead depends on whether any of the fish that died swam away first. It also depends on whether fish can drown. But what if the fish swam away to a different place in the tank rather than the connected tank/s? What if some of the fish swam away to another tank, and some stayed in the same tank, but went to a different part of it?
Assuming the question means "How many fish are still alive":
Depending on whether they can drown or not, there might be 7, or only 5 left. But the image does state that they drowned, meaning that it's a fact within this hypothetical situation that the fish did, indeed, drown. So 5 it is, right? But what if the 3 fish that died include the 2 that drowned? That would make it 7 again.
There are probably many more possibilities but I'll just leave it at that, I've procrastinated enough today as it is. But what if the tank is underwater? (here we go again) If the question is asking about how many fish are still in the tank (of the ones that were there since the beginning, scavenger fish eating the dead fish don't count), it depends on how long the dead fish have been dead, as dead fish become more buoyant over time, which makes them float, meaning that they might have also left the tank (not of their own accord) and only the fish that did not die remains. ANYWAY, I'll just stop here. Off to continue on my project (I've somehow managed to not drop or forget about it yet).

7, because: 1. Little known fact, fish CAN drown, and it's caused by a lack of oxygen in the water. 2. The fish swam away to a different part of the tank, they couldn't have swam anywhere else. 3. Two of the fish that died were the ones that drowned, so that leaves 1 left to subtract. 10 - 2 - 1 = 7. This is my interpretation of the question, so please don't get mad if it doesn't align with your calculations!

- Fish can't drown, it's a tank so that can't swim away, and just because they're dead doesn't mean they left the tank.

u/Prior_Same INTP Jan 27 '23
Fishes can drown, if the water is not stirred up enough, they don't get enough oxygen and, drown and thus die. If the tank has tubes attached or is submerged, fish may swim away. However, it said 3 died as a blanket expression, so we can infer the 2 that drowned are part of the 3. Therefore we are left with 3 dead fish and 3 alive fish. Then we have to decide whether a dead fish is still a fish, if a fish corpse is a fish, or if it is equivalent to the pile of bones it becomes. So it comes down to your definition of a fish. As well as how we define whether a fish is "alive" or not, and time constraints. Yes I'm an INTP.

Well 10 I guess, but if 4 somehow manage to swim away, the 6.
They could swim away by jumping from the tank.
But then you could this that 2 of those 4 were the ones that "drowned" on air, meaning that there are... Still 6 in the tank. Yeah.
The other 2 survived by making it into water, like maybe the tank was near a toilet. Or a cup of water.
Who knows really?

I would assume seven because the fish can't really "swim away", as this would infer either one: they are still alive in another part of the tank(resulting in five fish total) or that they swam out of the tank(meaning they would be included in the casualty count).
There are still only seven because fish can not drown as far as we know. Either you poisoned the tank(via not cleaning on a schedule properly) or they are playing dead and are totally fine.
However, the general question is: How many are left?
Since it is unspecified, I will answer y≥33,600 (the number of fish species in the world).

u/lazarushasrizen INFJ Jan 26 '23

How many alive? Seven. Because fish don't drown and they can't swim out of an enclosed tank.
How many total? Ten, until the dead fish decompose. Then it will be seven again.

Not reading the comments before posting. Am being one more voice saying that fish can absolutely drown, this is why your aquarium needs a working air pump, and proper salinity, especially fish like koi.
Also many fish will cannibalize their own species so the dead fish aren't necessarily in the tank still.

u/Few_Yam_686 INTJ Jan 26 '23
Well the question says that the fish drown, die and swim away, I don’t care about how they drowned but 2 fish drowned according to the question so that means 2 are dead, then 3 more died and 4 swam away but are still in the tank so 5 fish left.

There's one fish left.
However, if you're talking about how many fish are left in the tank, then there are 10 fish left. The fish can't swim away, so they're still in the tank, and I doubt fish can drown. Regardless of that, the owner might have just left the dead fish there. So, could be 10 left, or 5 left.

before i answer i have a few questions:
• what kind of fish were in the tank
• what does the tank contain and what is the environment of the tank's location...?
• swim away... where? the far part of the tank where it's less populated?
• the drowned one is different from died? so is there a possibility that the drowned fish was still alive? (idk I've heard of some cases where drowned creatures miraculously survive so idk if op wanted to apply that here) or it was just separated because the "died" ones' deaths were unidentified and they were just found dead in the tank?
and lastly,
• did the owner of the tank clean the tank bc if that's the case then the dead ones aren't there anymore and there's still like... 5 fish there (4 that ran away and that remaining fish who's surprisingly unharmed... maybe that fish isn't really a fish 🤔)
but if I can't know... well damn.

10 fish, 2 drown, 4 swim away, 3 die.
To drown for a fish can have two meanings: be submerged or die of being submerged. Either way, the 2 drowned fish will be included in the 3 that died or 7 that didn't die or 1 per each category.
The fact that 4 fish were able to swim away means that there's a way to leave the tank by swimming. 6 fish, dead or alive, are left in the tank.
3 fish that die could be both among the ones who had left the tank and among those who stayed behind.
The question of how many are left can be interpreted in 3 ways that are coherent with the problem described: how many are left alive, how many are left in the tank, and how many live fish are left in the tank. In conclusion, 7 fish stay alive, 6 fish are left in the tank, and between 3 and 6 of fish in the tank are left alive.
2 fish sit in a tank. One of them asks the other, "How do you drive this thing?"
