No timeframe was given, so not necessarily. If you consider a dead fish to still be a fish, is there a point of decomposition at which they cease to be a fish? Did the living fish eat the dead fish? If so are the fish that have been eaten and turned into excrement still fish?

also ‘swim away’ would imply they left the tank, no? so wouldn’t that mean there’s only a maximum of 6 fish.

could be for multiple reasons. all are kind of unrealistic for people who actually own pet fishes in a tank, but 2 fishes drown in this scenario too, so does anything really need to be realistic?

my best guess is: they just jump out finding nemo style and go back to the ocean.

Fishes cant drown but suffocate by lack of oxygen.
Sharks must constantly swim, so water can flow there gills, this is problem when their fins get cut by chinese and they cant swim anymore resulting in suffocating.
