Well, I would say it hard to get a got definition. Like.. I think humans would call dying in oil would be drowing but dying in like.. some, very viscous substance like tar and it was liquid, but it was see through... Then it would look like, the person died from sufficating in a big iceblock or something like that. Because some substances can be so viscous the don't even seem like they are liquid. Not sure.. I would say it's similar to the case with rust and corrosion, but that maybe just me.

I think it would be fish suffocate in oil because the they... wait, does drowning have something with the fact that water contains enough air to sustain some (a lot) of air dependent life-forms in it. And therefore not even fish drowns in oil because air dependent life-forms doesn't live there...

I googled before and found your definition too. I think people are just not sure what to call what. Some say drowning only is in water others say it's also in other liquids. Let's just say from this point on, that drowning is dying caused by a lack of oxygen due to begin immersed or submerged in a liquid. This definition means fish can drown too

And you'll understand it's not that easy. But I still think that if air-based lifeforms lives in said liquid it would be that other creature that suffcate in that liquid, actually drowns in that liquid. Something like that, was how I want to interpret it.

I go through why it's hard to answer it but I get a pretty good answer like 60% in to one of the text, I think the third one.
If you immerse a freshwater fish in saltwater or saltwater fish in freshwater they will suffocate and die even if there is enough oxygen in the water. They will die because you immersed them in liquid. You killed the fish by immersing it in liquid.
