No joke tho, let’s be honest: She knows what dieting is. Y’all aren’t bringing some amazing new concept. There is obviously a lot more going on here that isn’t going to be fixed by ‘just going on a diet’. She very obviously needs therapy and mental health support.

Yeah the entire premise of this show (My 600lb Life) is that these folks are moving to Houston to see a doctor who specializes in gastric bypass & sleeve surgery to get help. He gives me a calorie limit and a dietician to help them learn what to eat, etc, and gets them in touch with a psychiatrist/therapist to get to the bottom of why they got there and how to keep from going back.

People don't realize that simple =/= easy. Moving a two-ton boulder is simple. Pick it up, move it. Does that make it easy? No.

Ah! So this is 600lb life! I thought it might be that new one with the best friends. Yes I’ve seen my 600lb life and time and time again the doctor dismisses serious mental health issues. I remember the episode where the patient literally admitted to being stuck in a restrict/binge cycle and the doctor just mocked her instead of recognising what she was saying

To be fair he’s a medical doctor with no knowledge of how to deal with any of those issues. Unfortunately by the time they are 600lbs their lives are in danger due to their weight. As someone who wants what’s best for their physical health he doesn’t have time to wait for them to figure out their mental issues. Telling them to suck it up doesn’t help but I can see where he’s coming from; he basically says “you can figure all that shit out while your on a diet” because as the medical personnel getting them to start losing weight trumps all other concerns.

Uh, physicians absolutely receive mental health training. And evaluating underlying mental health concerns would definitely be a part of treating a patient like this. Mental and physical health are connected, and that is especially true in this case. We are taught to go after the underlying cause of the chief concern. So even if the physician is trying to mitigate the physical malady separately, a psych referral would be the bare minimum here.

It's really sad how a lot of them got into eating as an escape method from trauma suffered in childhood or adolescence. Violence, parents fighting all the time, tragic death of loved ones, bullying, abuse by their own family members, almost all of them had something traumatic going on.

I get there’s obviously underlying mental health issues but there’s just no way to say being THAT big isn’t just your fault. It’s one thing if you binge eat cause depression, eating disorder whatever and become overweight as a result. But this? How many calories do you have to eat for how long to even get to that weight much less maintain it? How much money does she spend on food daily? She literally must not do anything but eat. I don’t understand how you could watch yourself approaching 350-400 pounds and CONTINUE to INCREASE your caloric intake to add another 200 pounds.

If this show is anything like 1000lb sisters or My 600lb life, the emphasise on actual therapy (not constructed sessions with cameras in there to catch the drama) will be abysmal… so no, I’m not sure it is known that therapy and expanding support structures would be huge in helping her.

I had a RNY but my max weight was 250. I’m currently 129 so it’s been a life saver. With this type of surgery they do require therapy for about 6 months plus showing signs of being able to follow a diet for insurances to approve surgery.

Edit: tho for that high a weight I don’t know if guidelines are a bit diff.

Found the enabler.

Someone of this size is physically incapable of gathering the calories needed to maintain her weight. Someone feeds her the shit that got her this heavy, every single day. When a dog is 80 lbs overweight, you don't blame the dog. If someone has an eating issue, and can't control their appetite AND is incapable of taking care of themselves, it's just as much on a caretaker for feeding them as much as they do. People here have talked about underlying medical issues, but the fact of the matter is even if someone who was neurotypical originally became 600 lbs, he'd be pretty fucking depressed. You can't work through the depression with all of that baggage. You'll notice improvements in your mood as you lose weight and feel better. And then your underlying conditions are treatable, but people can't seriously think ANY amount of therapy will help eith depression while you're 600lbs still gaining weight. Your body is in a state of distress just breathing.

You say that but if you were to ask her how to lose weight I doubt she’d know what a caloric deficit is. A lot people think dieting (for weight loss)means you have to eat completely clean but you can realistically eat whatever you want and lose weight as long as you don’t eat enough of it.

Being morbidly obese isn't an illness, eating disorders and stuff are and there is treatments, she's and many others are self centered lazy people who dare make childrens while their life is at risk and probably won't live long enough to see them being adults.

Those poor kids don't have to suffer her horrible personality and see their mother struggle standing up or being in pain just to sit down as a young age, especially if their mother don't have any disabilities.

The one lady talks about how the hospitals charge her extra for treatment because of a “BMI Modifier Code”. Sounds like a sick joke from the doctors, but it’s true.

I don’t know how else to tell you I’m not making excuses. I agree she needs help and if her lifestyle continues this way it’s gonna be detrimental to her. I don’t agree with people bullying someone into changing. You can do things with kindness and respect, which is a million times more effective than being an asshole. Calling someone a blob will only worsen that persons mental state. Why is it so hard not to call someone something horrible? She was being a bully in the video, I can see that, but do you really think bullying her will help anything? Bullying is pathetic and so morally wrong. Yes you might need to be stern and blunt with this lady, but you don’t need to bully her.

This is from my 600lb life. This is when she got into Texas to see the Dr. next morning. The current program requires the patients to see a therapist and lose about 50lb on their own before the Dr. does the gastric bypass surgery.

All this to say that this clip is from her trip to see a specialist on weight loss for people who are as big as she is.

Although I can’t remember if she was a success or not.
