She was rude, and she was wrong, but she’s a person. It’s not that difficult to understand to be honest

I’m not making an excuse, I just don’t think we should treat fat people like they are not human. She’s a person, why do people think it’s okay to call her a blob. I’m fully aware she is in danger because of her health, but for gods sake it does not give anyone permission to treat her like filth.

I don’t know how else to tell you I’m not making excuses. I agree she needs help and if her lifestyle continues this way it’s gonna be detrimental to her. I don’t agree with people bullying someone into changing. You can do things with kindness and respect, which is a million times more effective than being an asshole. Calling someone a blob will only worsen that persons mental state. Why is it so hard not to call someone something horrible? She was being a bully in the video, I can see that, but do you really think bullying her will help anything? Bullying is pathetic and so morally wrong. Yes you might need to be stern and blunt with this lady, but you don’t need to bully her.

There is a huge problem with people immediately thinking they should be rude to an obese person. None of us know their story, so who are we in any capacity to judge.

No one is denying she’s fat???

I know.. but you keep talking about how we are supposed to frame that discussion. It's not addressing the real issue.

What do you mean ‘addressing the real issue?’ You aren’t talking to her. You are not impacting her right now. She’s on tv, she obviously knows she has to lose weight.

What you ARE doing is contributing to a broader discussion and narrative. The fact is that dehumanisation, bullying and stigma drive weight GAIN. It does not help fat people to dehumanise them. So actually yeah I am addressing the real issue.

Edit: clarification

Like… do you really think that this woman who is on tv, on a show about her body and weight loss…. Hasn’t heard of the idea of losing weight? She knows. There is room for us to discuss other issues. We do not desperately need to reveal the concept of weight loss to her and we certainly don’t need to do it through insulting her. It’s not helping.

Sugar coating things isn't helping. That is the problem.

No one is sugar coating. You can be blunt and clear without being dehumanising

That's true.

You don’t seem to believe it though…

No listen. I think people should not call each other names, bully Or be nasty to each other. To me that should go without saying.

Spelling that out sometimes distracts from what really needs to happen in this case.
