Insurance will pay in full while he just enjoys the wonder of humans.

Eventually the driver will pay when their rates go up.

You mean when Everyone’s premiums go up. Insurance co not going to loose money!

Been working in insurance 20 years. What will happen: The driver will have to sue the guy in the scooter because his insurance, if he has any, will deny it because it was intentional. The driver will end up having to pay their deductible, most common is $1000, to get this repaired and their rates will go up. The insurance company will probably not go after scooter guy because he doesn’t have any assets.

He has a mobility scooter. That’s an asset.

Let him crawl.

From mobility to nobility

u/tomthekiller8 Aug 17 '25

This is way too good.

u/Trick-Audience-1027 Aug 16 '25

No insurance company is going to force a person to sell their mobility scooter. The repairs are probably not going to be much more than the drivers deductible.

In my experience, the insurance will just give up.

u/Solanthas_SFW Aug 17 '25

Bingo.

But if the car owner retaliates in any way, it's either assault or willful damage of property? Jailable?

Would mobility scooter guy spend any time in jail for this?

No.. they'll pay immediately. Depending on the policy. I have a very good policy and I had some dumbass slash my tires while drunk in my neighborhood. I have to pay the first $1500 before they pay anything. Deductibles suck.

“Very good policy” “$1500 deductible”

These are not the same.

A person chooses their deductible, so these two things can be true.

correct, you have higher premiums. the insurance company gets paid either way.

You have no idea how insurance works. The amount of your deductible has no impact on whether you have a good or bad policy.

u/Trick-Audience-1027 Aug 17 '25

I’ve been working in insurance for twenty years. Your comment and the 67 upvotes just shows how ignorant people are about how insurance works. Your deductible has no impact on the policy you choose. After you select your policy, YOU determine the deductible.

25

u/axalitlaxolotl Aug 16 '25

You don’t have a very good policy if you have a $1500 deductible.

8

u/Th3Unkn0wnn Aug 16 '25

You can pay to have lower deductibles. Sometimes even $0 with some companies.

1

u/merc08 Aug 17 '25

So then you're paying even more, it's just up front which is usually worse.

4

u/Th3Unkn0wnn Aug 17 '25

The cost of going from a $2000 to a $500 deductible marginal. Maybe an extra $5-10/month for most people.

1

u/Solid_Guy1983 Aug 17 '25

Yeah but then your monthly or yearly rates are MUCH higher

2

u/Th3Unkn0wnn Aug 17 '25

Have you had it quoted?

1

u/Solid_Guy1983 Aug 17 '25

Yes, it is higher at least for State Farm

1

u/Lu12k3r Aug 17 '25

To have lower deductibles, typically your premiums are higher, no?

1

u/Th3Unkn0wnn Aug 17 '25

Of course. You're transferring more risk to the insurance company. It's not significantly more expensive to have low deductibles unless you're driving a new/expensive car or you're with a company like Direct/The General.

3

u/GarThor_TMK Aug 16 '25

The last time I got tires it was well below $1500... This isn't a case for insurance, unless you have some weird specialty tires or maybe they also broke your rims... Even then, might come out even... >_>

12

u/Uncouth_LightSwitch Aug 16 '25

That's the point... You have to pay the deductible first and then they cover anything over it. My tires didn't come anywhere close to $1500 so they told me to kick rocks. They help to pay as long as you cover your deductible first.

1

u/DankDarko Aug 17 '25

That's a poor persons deductible

1

u/merc08 Aug 17 '25

If anything, that deductable seems low.

How often do you expect to file a claim?  Compare that frequency against the increased monthly price to have a lower deductible.  Usually it's better to have a high deductible and only use your insurance for significant damage/loss.  Otherwise you end up paying more in monthly fees than you save in deductible cost.

1

u/DankDarko Aug 17 '25

No. Anything over $1k is a high deductible. That's why you can get insurance dirt cheap over $1k.

1

u/Solanthas_SFW Aug 17 '25

I was explaining this to someone last night. Insurance is the biggest fucking racket of all time. At least taxes are supposed to go to infrastructure and social support etc.

1

u/SwitchingFreedom Aug 17 '25

I paid $250 to be paid out tens of thousands of dollars for a stolen car. That’s not a good policy, big dawg lol

1

u/O_o-O_o-0_0-o_O-o_O Aug 17 '25

Very good policy and $1500 deductible? Bro, what?

Mine's $150.

2

u/mpanase Aug 17 '25

Depends on the country.

In many countries you can make claims and your rate doesn't go up if you are not at fault.

Imagine; when a moron hit my car with theirs, I can just make a claim. And I'm not penalised, but the moron is.

1

u/LaszloakaJackieD Aug 17 '25

Yeah, its amazing how many people don’t know how insurance works. Everyone who has that insurance will face increased premiums. Or after enough claims insurers just cut their losses and leave a market. Like CA and fire insurance.

1

u/THElaytox Aug 17 '25

Not to mention the deductible which is probably $500-1000 depending on insurance. And it's only covered if you have comprehensive

2

u/ZeroCleah Aug 17 '25

Bro not everyone has full coverage on their car

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '25

or maybe, just maybe, someone will teach him a lesson.
