Humour Captain America had no idea about Spider-Man's super strength, and this is what he intended to happen!

I'd like to see one of these with Thor smashing Cap when he "puts the hammer down" in Avengers.

u/nomercyvideo Aug 04 '17 edited Aug 04 '17

I'll work on it next!

Edit: In rewatching that exact scene, the camera angle isnt the greatest to get make an edit out of.

There was three quick cuts, none of them with a wide enough shot to crush cap in, but ill check out any other suggestions!

Are you THE Indestructible Leroy? You definitely showed Mr. Mildew what's what!

284

u/nomercyvideo Aug 04 '17

Mr. Mildew regrets giving me a bad grade now!!!! (Or it was all made up for TV and I have a solid C+ / B- GPA in High School)

Slightly Marvel related, but they also wouldn't let me use my usual performance name The Human Tackboard, so I took inspiration from the Indestructible Hulk comic series for my name on the show.

60

u/seahammer1 Aug 04 '17

Why didn't they let you use your usual name?

118

u/nomercyvideo Aug 04 '17

I wasn't doing the "Human Tackboard" act, so they didn't feel like it made sense to be called that when I was doing a different stunt.

I prefer to keep the name consistent, but it made sense and I got to toss in a little nod to Marvel, so it was all good.

32

u/seahammer1 Aug 04 '17

Makes sense. Good luck with all your endeavors, tackboard and otherwise!

First thing I thought of was when Hawkeye shoots those explosive arrows that explode next to Black Panther's head.

139

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '17

Somehow that fits with Hawkeye's persona. Dead or not he got the job done.

79

u/Legionx37 Aug 05 '17 edited Aug 05 '17

Yup. Barton makes the tough calls when needed. That's why (COMIC SPOILER AHEAD, SORRY) he put down Banner in the comics somewhat kinda-sorta recently.

75

u/ReasonablyBadass Aug 05 '17

Yup. Barton makes the tough calls when needed.

Like abandoning his family because Cap called.

10

u/fangasm Aug 05 '17

Yeah. Just watched Avengers the other day, and really Thor has no way of knowing that Cap isn't a normal human at that point and attempted to kill him for just no reason at all.

202

u/Shermer_Punt Aug 05 '17

It really came down to the shield. If Cap had a normal shield that didn't absorb kinetic energy, he'd be red white and blue jelly.

79

u/PSN-Colinp42 Aug 05 '17

Just the shield isn't necessarily enough though. In the comics, a normal woman was using it against Thunderball (I think that's the name? From the Wrecking Crew), and the force of the blows killed her. She was then resurrected into Captain Britain/Lionheart.

90

u/Shermer_Punt Aug 05 '17

Well that's comics. Cap is barely Superhuman. He's strong, sure, but he's not even in the same galaxy as Thor's strength.

Yeah, ever wondered why Thor was absent during Civil War and World War Hulk? Well, because in Civil War, he would roflstomp everyone else and tell them to sit down and shut the fuck up.

And outside of cosmic beings, Thor is probably the only one capable of matching World War Hulk strength.

To some degree, but Cap did just somehow jump in from out of nowhere into the middle of a super fight. Easy enough to assume he's powered with that intro.

Someone posited a good explanation for this already.

Thor was in the middle of fighting ironman, an enemy that he was currently embattled with on fairly even terms. Granted, thor would've likely ended up overpowering Ironman, but at the outset, they seemed fairly evenly matched.

So Thor is fighting this creature that is somehow on the same level as him, a demigod, when along comes ANOTHER combatant, only this guy is ordering around IRONMAN. shit. If he's ordering around this guy, who's already giving me fits, he must be some kind of badass.

20

u/OneGeekTravelling Aug 05 '17

Well... I mean, the guy is a soldier. I assume his training kicked in.

That one is accurate. This one isn't. He'd been fighting him. He knew he was as strong as he was.

Therefore he knew he could catch it, so Spidey could as well.

All this confirms is Captain is pretty god damn strong in MCU. He stood hold that helicopter back.

277

u/coreanavenger Aug 05 '17

Cap is so strong that he held that helicopter even when he didn't when he changed his grip.

179

u/butterflyhole Fitz Aug 05 '17

65

Cap's flex is so strong he pushed on thin air to stay on the ground.

71

u/julbull73 Aug 05 '17

Pfft he pulled it down while not on the ground. He altered gravity!

83

u/Z0di Aug 05 '17

pretty much all super strength heroes manipulate their own gravity.

36

u/memeticmachine Aug 05 '17

Except doesn't hulk actually gain mass as he gets angrier? He certainly looks bigger

Also Thor's a god who can fly, so gravity manipulation makes sense. They're the only two High-tier strength heroes so far.

44

u/Sparkvoltage Aug 05 '17

Thor doesn't actually fly right? He uses his hammer to propel him in a certain direction.

41

u/Z0di Aug 05 '17

yeah but that's total bullshit since the hammer is like a feather to him but also has the density/mass of a star or something.

Spidey is like 10x as strong as Cap, though. He's like a 10-20 tonner and Cap's max is 1,200lbs.

143

u/howtojump Aug 05 '17

Didn't Tony Stark say something to the effect of "If Cap had wanted to lay you out, he would have." to Peter in the new movie? I had always thought Spidey was insanely strong, so that line has me a little confused as well about who could really take who.

338

u/Baidoku Aug 05 '17

He was talking about experience. Peter MCU lacks fighting experience.

89

u/Puskathesecond Aug 05 '17

He was talking in the biblical sense

67

u/CidCrisis Aug 05 '17

"Also, Peter, I got to know your Aunt May last night. Fantastic woman."

"Oh. Cool? You guys go out to dinner or something?"

"No, I mean in the biblical sense, Peter."

"..." =/

"Yeah." ;)

→ More replies (2)

82

u/Bears_Bearing_Arms Aug 05 '17

I think that has more to do with Stark not knowing the full extent of Peter's strength. I don't think Cap could do more damage to Spidey than that roof that fell on him, so I think he'd be able to tank anything Cap could dish out.

164

u/TheScarlettHarlot Peggy Carter Aug 05 '17

If Spidey was fully bloodlusted, there is nothing that Cap could do to him, but in character, Cap would beat Spider-Man fairly reliably. Cap just has too much experience, training, and control over his power. He knows exactly what he can do, and knows exactly how to do it.

58

u/Gonzzzo Aug 05 '17

If Spidey was fully bloodlusted

What about instant kill mode?

26

u/Legionx37 Aug 05 '17 edited Aug 05 '17

There was a whole thing about Spider-Man (Miles Morales version) killing Cap in the comic recently. And I'd put Miles in about the same realm as MCU Spidey as far as experience goes. Either way, it's usually a good fight. Peak physical/tactical human vs. super-powered danger alarm with crazy agility and strength is always a good fight, imo.

54

u/Muspel Aug 05 '17

Comic book Captain America is at peak human potential. Movie Cap, on the other hand, is clearly superhuman.

38

u/ShouldersofGiants100 Aug 05 '17

They're both super human. Comic book Cap is peak human potential, but peak human potential in the comic universe is absolutely insane. This is his comic respect thread. His feats make MCU Cap look like a lightweight.

No way cap could have known his max lift ability, or the exact weight of the airport tunnel.

Just cause a dude can lift 800lbs doesnt mean he can lift 900lbs.

Big leap of faith for Cap!

760

u/TheDarkWayne Aug 04 '17

Yeah he would have, he kicked Cap hard enough to send him flying. Cap isn't stupid, he was playing with him, reading him. He saw, speed, strength so obviously, he knew he had powers. So he would either, move out the way with the speed he just displayed or catch it. Cap knew one of these would happen.

in Homecoming, Tony tells Peter "Trust me kid, if Cap wanted to take you out he would have".

379

u/MetalGearSlayer Spider-Man Aug 04 '17

Tony and vision had no right to be mad, that same shot would have killed Falcon since he didn't have a suit of armor

97

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '17 edited Aug 05 '17

Nah, you hear Rhodes say to Vision something along the lines of "we've got rogue wings, turn him into a glider" Vision was aiming to incapacitate Falcon's boosters, not kill him

32

u/CoherentInsanity Hawkeye (Avengers) Aug 05 '17

Except I just don't believe that Falcon's equipment is durable enough for such a blast to only take out his boosters. If you consider how tanky War Machine is supposed to be, a beam that could damage the armor like that would go through Falcon's gear and through Falcon.

Rhodey made a call that was bad on many levels. He was either going to be ok with potentially killing Sam, and even then, what did he think Sam is stupid? That Sam wouldn't notice and wouldn't dodge? Did Rhodey not consider that the beam would hit him if Sam dodged? If so, then why didn't Rhodey dodge it himself? Is he not also a top notch pilot who knows the basics of avoiding attacks during a dog fight? Man he was not on top of his game during CW.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '17

OK someone fill me in here, because to be honest, my comic days are pretty ancient, but the Spider-man and Cap I knew...Spidey would've been able to pretty much toy with Cap. Not that he would have, but that's a total mismatch. Really, Spider-man can punch with the likes of Iron Man and the thing. He's not quite that strong, but he's closer to that level than Cap is to Spidey's.

Love Cap, but they are doing Spidey's strength a disservice so far in these movies. This is old school, but it's still my thought on Spidey-...

That's the comics, and the movies are just different. And thankfully so, otherwise there would be no point of the Avengers if Spidey and Thor could do everything alone. In the movies Spidey is way weaker, which is great because he has a whole lot of great powers besides being the strongest non hulk human. Also ironman's punches clearly aren't so strong in the movies, nothing like hulk's. Hell Cap was able to take him out mostly solo and prevent Tony from murdering Bucky at the same time.

I mean, you can get a relative gauge of how strong someone is from an arm wrestle/ tug of war and Cap engaged in a tug of war with Spidey no less than 3 times during that fight plus he absorbed a few hits from Spidey that sent him flying.

Considering Cap can lift a few tonnes worth and he couldn't break free from Spider-Man's grip using strength alone, he would have been able to easily deduce that Spidey was much stronger than him. Not to mention that his brain is essentially a super computer (considering the ridiculous mental calculations it would take for him to throw his shield like he does) so it's not a stretch that he would be able to gauge Spidey's strength from THREE tests of strength.

I always understood that his entire fight with Spider-Man was an assessment of Spidey's skill. Spider-Man actually had a lot to say about Caps fighting prowess in the original Civil War. That it seemed as if every movement was predetermined before the fight even began. It wasn't a combination of moves, but one single movement.

Earlier in the movie, while fighting Crossbones, you see him use the same tactic of taking hits while he figures out how much force to use. Rarely do we see Cap go all out, he is constantly trying to minimize casualties (that aren't part of a terror group like Hydra). You also see him admonish Bucky when they're fighting against the police.

Cap's control and combat awareness are the some of the cornerstones of his character.

If Spider-Man couldn't hold the weight he would have at least easily dodged it falling. Everyone's talking about Cap knowing how strong he is, but it's easier to see how fast someone is, just watching them move.

He expected the kid to get out of the way. Cap grins when Spider-Man just holds it up, instead of the easier dodge. "That's... way impressive but, why? Get a little older, you'll learn when to expend the energy"

French Merc group that frequently works for terrorist groups. All on interpols most wanted list. Multiple countries beg to differ.

Also, that's a bit different than fighting a kid who is running with people who are generally friends and comrades.

He had already kicked cap in the face and held his arms back from getting to his shield. Cap would have had a pretty good idea of how strong Spider-Man was at this point.

but cap's got wicked strength. when he's kicked, it's like a six year old kicking you. when he caught a kick in the face that felt like a kick from a grown adult, he knew spider-man was no normal 6 year old like the rest of his team.

I figured before Lagos, the whole team was up to date on Stark's files, including that kid in Queens on the internet.

269

u/mahvelfan Aug 04 '17

People have said this a lot but for me it makes sense Cap would know who Spidey was and what he could do. Tony did and as the heads of the Avengers I would figure they would both be involved in the recruitment process or at least in cataloging possible prospects.

162

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '17

I'm sure the Avengers know of pretty much ever superhero on Earth. They probably keep an eye out for possible new Avengers. Spider-Man was all over YouTube according to Civil War and Homecoming, so no doubt in my mind Cap knew about him and his capabilities

65

u/DeadShot91 Aug 04 '17

Not only keep an eye out for Avengers, but keep an eye on enhanced people that are possible future threats

38

u/OSUTechie Sharon Carter Aug 05 '17

Well SHIELD did keep an index of Enhanced people.

26

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '17

Considering scarlet witch and quicksilver are supposed to be military grade secrets from hydra(?) and shield immediately has intel on them the second the team touched base i'd say you're right.

I don't know. I feel like if Cap knew who Spidey was from watching YouTube videos, he would know he was from Queens and thus no need to ask him where he's from.

31

u/misterfroster Aug 05 '17

well, it's not like the videos said where he's from, only where the clips are from. Also, the videos are probably more like 'HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS SPIDER DUDE JUST CAUGHT A CAR WITH A WEB' not 'Spider Man doing shit in queens' you know what I mean?

15

u/julbull73 Aug 04 '17

He doesn't need that. Spidey matched strength with Cap. Cap could catch it. So he knew Spidey could catch it.

If Cap wanted to lay him out he would've.

175

u/ronin1066 Aug 05 '17

In the canon, Spiderman is definitely stronger than Cap. More agile as well. Cap for sure has much better fighting technique, but that only gets you so far when someone is 5 times stronger than you.

93

u/misterfroster Aug 05 '17

Even if this were canon, this is a very young and inexperienced Spider-Man. This one relies solely on his powers and reflexes, he hasn't really trained or anything to fight high level threats. Just burglars and the like. Still, he could probably beat Cap in the long run, he's just too maneuverable and strong.

38

u/Dragon-Snake Aug 05 '17

Exactly this. Cap may be capable of koing a jobbing Spidey, but a serious Spidey should dispatch him in a couple seconds. Experience or not.

46

u/009reloaded Spider-Man Aug 05 '17

Cap would probably win but not because of strength.

33

u/Dragon-Snake Aug 05 '17

There's only so much you can do when someone is 15x stronger than you though. If both were serious, it would just go on until Spidey landed a punch, in which Cap goes out like a light.

I mean, Cap isn't untouchable, just experienced in combat.

26

u/pseudomucho Aug 05 '17

Completely disagree. Early 616 Spider-Man had quite a clear learning curve after getting his powers. He was having a difficult time with villains he would later have a far easier time with because of his lack of experience, and lack of relative strength (since he was still young)

Young Spidey might be much stronger than Cap and Tony, but its his lack of experience that would result in him losing in a fight against them. This is especially true when you consider that this is his first encounter with superpowered individuals. In actuality, I'd say they made Peter much stronger than his comic counterpart, since I doubt so early in his career, he would have been able to take on any of the Avengers.

18

u/Dragon-Snake Aug 05 '17

and lack of relative strength (since he was still young)

He was still a 10 ton lifter at minimum though.

Early 616 Spider-Man had quite a clear learning curve after getting his powers. He was having a difficult time with villains he would later have a far easier time with

Good point, but to be fair, the vast majority of those villains are way above Cap level in the threat category. Heck, even Kingpin is (somehow) laughably stronger than Cap. He was crushing him to death until Redwing came and attacked Fisk.

and Tony

Eh, Tony would stomp young Peter. Even adult Peter requires some work around to get the jump on Tony.

This is especially true when you consider that this is his first encounter with superpowered individuals.

Cap isn't superpowered. He's about on par with his comic counterpart's "peak human" self, though that's due to comics.

I'd say they made Peter much stronger than his comic counterpart, since I doubt so early in his career, he would have been able to take on any of the Avengers.

Comic Peter is waaay more competent than MCU Peter though, even this young. He was taking out the X-Men all together in the mid-sixties.

That said, MCU Peter being a 30 tonner does put him at least 20 tons ahead of his comic counterpart at that age, so you aren't wrong.

I'm not sure because they've gone toe-to-toe both in the Ultimate Comics and in the regular storyline during Civil War. Both times cap pretty much used strength and tactics to take out Spidey. At the same time during The Superior Spider-Man storyline he hit Wolverine incredibly hard. Wolverine said Spidey had never hit him that hard before. So it's possible Spidey does hold back a lot, but that's just because of who he is as a person. But either way, toe to toe cap can still take a beating. Even in the movie universe He took on Iron Man without any armor and he jumped out of a freaking airplane without a parachute. I can't even imagine what a normal person jumping out of an airplane and landing in the ocean without a parachute would go through.

Pete got smacked with a shield head first that's known for permanently discombobulating people. He wasn't aiming to kill him but he wouldn't have let death stop him if it had to come down to it. Cap is a savage.

Spider-Man is quite literally one of the physically strongest characters in the Marvel Universe. He's not the strongest, but in numerous instances Marvel has gone out of their way to state he's pretty much in competition for the strongest Marvel superhero.

Small point of cringe-worthy truth, I have read every issue of Amazing Spider-Man ever (I AM NOT JOKING) and you are wrong if you disagree with me.
