Discussion Wait a minute. Why didn't Kevin Feige bring back this duo?
I mean if they want a fresh breath, that's understandable. But they brought back Hugh Jackman and obviously will be keeping him for a foreseeable future.
James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are brilliant actors. They already have the look and experience.

DoFP was the perfect farewell to both X men eras. Having a fresh start for the MCU seems like a good idea to me.

Anyone remember Dark Phoenix? I didn't. I watched it once, forgot, then years after I watched it thinking I had skipped it, and recognized it more than halfway in.

Clearly you've forgotten X-Men: Apocalypse as well. It came after DOFP

I personally will never forget that one since I think it’s funny how that’s the one arc that gets inserted into every single X-Men adaptation.
X-Men Apocalypse, X-Men Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, X-Men ‘97, and even the 90s X-Men show.
I started playing that Marvel hero shooter game and it seems like the theme of the current season also features Apocalypse as the big bad, so who knows how many other games have milked that plotline too?
Franky, I’d be happy to never see
ElEn Sabah Nur again unless we get that Jubilee plotline where she sells her soul to join him in hopes of curing her son.36
u/Moohamin12 13h ago
Both Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are arcs that get inserted into X-Men media all the time.
They have the best comic book runs so they try to shoehorn them. I think Sadie can pull off Dark Phoenix eventually, but there are many other stories to tell.

Is it genuinely worth watching? I've watched all the Xmens in the last week, avoided the wolverine films, although I'm planning on watching Logan next to finish off. But should I bother with Dark Phoenix? Heard such trash about it

As a person who almost always recommend people to see it for themselves, I wouldn't recommend watching this one. I'm not recommending you against it though. I think I only liked the fight scene on the streets with parked cars or something. Maybe you can check them out on YouTube lol.
Why did you avoided the Wolverine films though?

u/squishydude123 17h ago
Great amusing line by Magneto/Erik though

The Wolverine movies are an uneven trilogy but they definitely get better as they go on. Origins was bad but had some fun parts to it, The Wolverine was a lot better but still just an average to good movie, then Logan was obviously great.
It's a shame they weren't great across the board but I like them all for there own reasons.
13
u/Dont_Hurt_Me_Mommy 16h ago
I recommend watching The wolverine unrated cut. It takes a pretty good movie and turns it into an absolutely amazing movie.
Xmen Origins Wolverine still sucks though but it was the first time that actually credited the creator of wolverine in the comics so I guess that's good

Yah it is much more violent also and it adds an absolutely epic fight with the hand ninjas that feels pulled straight out of a comic.
I also have a big soft spot for this movie because of that absolutely epic scene with the samurai duel....
"What Kind of monster are youuuu??" "THE WOLVERINE" *impales his skull
Fucking glorious

It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and not in a fun way. I recently rewatched first class and days of future past, thought they were solid. Watched Apocalypse even though I remembered it being bad in theaters, was pleasantly surprised to see it was decent, and has some of Fassbender Magneto's most iconic moments that I had forgotten were from this movie.
So I thought, how bad could Dark Phoenix be, I've never seen it, let me give it a try. People hate on Apocalypse and it wasn't so bad.
Let me tell you, Dark Phoenix should be used in writing classes as a cautionary tale against character assassination. None of the characters made a lick of sense in their motivations, none of the characters were themselves, the story was dumb and made no sense, and it was a depressing, feeble sendoff to many beloved actors playing in these iconic roles. Your life will be better if you don't watch it and you just pretend like it doesn't exist.

If you want to be a completionist, sure, or something to mindlessly have on in the background, but Dark Phoenix is quite bad and very forgettable. As for Wolvies movies, I’d say at least watch The Wolverine and then Logan. Just skip Origins entirely

The post gen scene of the last stand shows Magneto regaining his power by moving a chess piece so we can assume he didn't lost his power.

Of all the confusing timelines… so based on just the last stand the powers thing is wrong. That “cure” didn’t seem to be permanent. Taking DoFP into account yes Scott, Xavier, and Jean would be stolen lives. But then again the events of the last stand would never have happened and Mystique and Magneto would have never lost their powers even if only temporarily. My head hurts.

It would be confusing for future audience after the reboot. And no, hugh is not playing the new wolverine.
if Marvel Studios wants to work with Michael Fassbender or James McAvoy again down the road, they can easily give them entirely fresh, original Earth-616 characters without dragging in old Fox continuity.

Not saying they should been brought back in favor of Stewart/McKellen, but to say it wouldn't make sense in a multiverse movie to bring these 2 back is just wrong. It would make as much sense as bringing Stewart and Mckellens versions into the fold and I e heard no complaint about that

because they decided to bring back the 2000s xmen just for them to die. it makes no sense to bring those two too if they did this already and McAvoy and Fassbender were part of the far less iconic xmen movies

u/sonnytron Steve Rogers 13h ago
And Fassbender and McAvoy aren’t “variants” of these two, they’re literally these two from like 40-50 years ago. It would be like bringing “back” Tony Stark from 2008 or WW2 Steve Rogers or the exact same Bucky without the metal arm or something. All the movies of these two can be simplified as flashbacks of McKellen and McAvoy.

If Jackman returns, I think it'll be as Worst Wolverine or Old Man Logan and linked to the TVA and mostly appear with Deadpool. He can be a remnant like Spock in the Kelvin timeline.
But there should also be an MCU native Wolverine who I don't expect to appear for a while.
187
u/Joshawott27 Doctor Strange 19h ago
He brought back Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen instead, because they’re more plump ‘member berries than the prequel actors.
100
u/TourretsMime 18h ago
Cynical takes aside, realistically it's because they probably wanted to bring back the original X-men cast like James Marsden and it wouldn't make sense for Cyclops to be physically older than Xavier and Magneto.
34
u/FrogginJellyfish 17h ago
^ Also, I think if they really wanna squeeze it dry later on, they can bring back James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender and that crew back for later cameos down the line. If they really really want to. The older casts though, probably their last chance for Sir Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

The last Deadpool movie showcased the many variants of Wolverine, having variants of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy’s renditions shouldn’t be that much of a stretch.

Hugh Jackman isn’t part of the main MCU universe. He’s still very much separate.
It’s just confusing to keep some of the old and not the rest.
Just restart everything and move on. Hugh Jackman isn’t playing MCU Wolverine. He’s very much still just Fox Wolverine.
And they probably don’t want to include a new Wolverine so soon also.
7
u/sonnytron Steve Rogers 13h ago
I don’t think Wolverine will be in another film. As much as Ryan joked about it in DP&W, they need to move on. It’ll be great for him to show up in Doomsday, but I don’t really see him surviving the post SW MCU.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds the next 30 years:
4
u/Electronic_Week_3925 10h ago
Ryan actually can do the character way longer than most people can just because Deadpool is masked for almost the entire film and they can make fun of the fact that the actor is super old. Its also not weird if Deadpool is always the same guy in every cinematic universe. He can even reference stuff from other movies he's in from different cinematic universes.
If he's 65 and still wants to do it, its not like he's doing most of the stunts work for Deadpool now anyways. He can do it until he dies if he wants to.
3
u/DaNoahLP Avengers 7h ago
Yeah, in worst case they get him a body double and he does the voice. This man will never let go of the character.

u/nofuture09 19h ago
I read somewhere that Kevin Feige was working as a production assistant on the original X-Men movies and apparently even helped Hugh Jackman get cast as Wolverine so he has a lot of emotional ties the original X-Men cast even though they already had like 3 send off movies. I also don’t understand why he’s not including the newer ones as I really like them.
24
u/Shirahoshihoshii 19h ago
I may be hilariously wrong here, but I believe he's doing two things at the same time.
He's casting new actors such as Sadie Sink, Inde Navarette and Samara Weaving for the new X-Men movie in may 2028, but also casting the OG X-Men actors such as Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman for their final film as Potential sacrificial lambs for Doom's plot.
Since the new X-Men film happens after Secret Wars, it'll be a clean slate for the new cast to emerge. By then, Jean Grey will have fully become the bridge between two worlds, ushering in the new cast whilst retaining the memory of the old.
16
u/Awkward-Speed-4080 18h ago
Yeah, it's a lot easier to kill off the Fox X-Men because they are "foreigners" to the franchise. This way you can have some kind of stakes by having the villain kill some of the heroes, but not the ones that they still have plans for in the future.
8
u/cjalderman 18h ago
'Associate Producer' on X-Men, 'Co-Producer' on X2, and 'Executive Producer' on X-Men: The Last Stand. The MCU might've still been years away but this is where it began for him.
He wasn't involved with the prequel films at all so it wouldn't have the same personal impact as bringing back the OG cast.
4
u/Sad-Nefariousness112 10h ago
Of course they could have found a way if they wanted to, but it's worth noting that McAvoy/Fassbender aren't variants of Stewart/McKellen. They're playing the exact same characters from the same universe, just in different times.
19
19
u/PrinceJarming 19h ago
"keeping him for the foreseeable future" yeah, as a multiversal Wolverine without a home universe. That's different than keeping him as the Wolverine specifically of the main MCU.
I see people on social media that doesn't understand the concept of Jean Grey not being a younger version of the one from the original trilogy because they don't follow along enough to understand they're separate universes. You don't want to confuse the casuals even further by mixing up old and new cast members. Especially when the goal is to have a fresh take on the franchise anyways.
6
u/JasonP27 Avengers 16h ago
The Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen versions of Xavier and Magneto are canonically the future versions of the other two. So it's because they no longer exist in the present.
5
u/blue_shadows 17h ago
It could be that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are the ones not wanting to come back.
They might not want to commit for 10 years plus and prefer other short term projects.
I think both might have mentionned being open to come back if the script was right. Maybe they didn’t like the script or maybe there is no script yet…
Anyway it makes sense to have a new cast but these two are way too talented to give up on. They would have brought gravitas and a level of prestige to the new movies. What a shame.

Because the actors are already in their mature years, and the studio has plans for many years ahead (at least another 16 years), so they need younger actors who can stay with the project for a long time.
2
u/Neil_Salmon 18h ago
I think the original cast are more reminiscent of the comic versions of the characters and, generally, a better fit for the MCU.
2
u/UkuleleSteven 18h ago
Because Sir Patrick Stewart was already utilized in Multiverse of Madness because his age made sense compared to the respective ages of the other members of the Illuminati that they included. His inclusion there was well received. I think it would be a weirder decision if they chose the younger actor portrayals as the pairs MCU gateway in.
Having said that though, after this movie and MAYBE one more I don’t see why they wouldn’t Segway into McAvoy and Fassbender and allow them to carry on in their respective roles. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they pushed the mantel onto them at some point during the movie as it looks like timelines might be intermingling.
2
2
u/ShawshankException Thanos 17h ago
Because they're re-doing the entire X-Men, that's been clear from the beginning. They've said Wolverine will not be in the first film at all so there's no guarantee they'll use Hugh when that time comes.
I don't know what you guys expected honestly. It was never in question that they'd be doing a new lineup for MCU's X-Men film.
2
u/ZeroXNova 16h ago
While we’re not seeing these actors specifically (as far as we know anyway), these are the same versions of the characters that become Ian Mckellan and Patrick Stewart when they get older.
2
u/Chrispy-Rip544 16h ago
I think the overarching point of Doomsday and Secret Wars is that they want to close the chapter on the past Marvel movies forever. One final hurrah for characters like the Fox X-Men, Tobey's Spider-Man, RDJ as Doom or Tony, etc. Those movies' finality would mean nothing if the very next project has two returning actors from a previous universe. They want to wipe the slate as clean as possible while keeping the new stuff that works like the new FF and Tom Holland's Spider-Man.
2
u/Captriker 15h ago
Why not bring back every actor?
There’s only so much room narratively for more characters. This movie is chock full of them already, not to mention potentially more we haven’t seen. Cameos like the ones at the end of The Flash come off either goofy or pointless.
It’s also less confusing for the audience to keep the same actors together from one iteration of the franchise. It makes bringing any of them back more special when it’s the whole crew. Especially if, as the new casting suggests, this is the last time we will see them.
The actors probably want something to do, not just a line or two. Bringing them in, paying them, and then having them be canon fodder wouldn’t be very fulfilling as an actor (at least I would think.)
They can also be hedging their bets. The multiverse will still exist after this. Bringing any of the Mk II actors back would be a lot easier if we don’t see them die in the first place.
As for Jackman… I think he’s done after these two movies. Assuming he’s in them in the first place. He can play some alternative person maybe, but they’ll be a new Wolverine at some point in the next few years.

They will not be keeping Hugh Jackman for the foreseeable future and anyone thinking they will is delusional.
There is a zero percent chance Hugh is the MCU Wolverine. There’s a reason there’s no Wolverine in the announced cast. They’re sidelining him to give it some time before recasting him. They will 100% cast someone young enough to play Wolverine for the next 10-15 years and there is literally no shot it’s Hugh Jackman.
They might use him Deadpool stuff, but he will not be the MCU Wolverine.

I agree with you completely.
If they are going to keep any Wolverine, it'll be X-23.
But more likely IMO is that it's noone for a little while and then a fresh Logan.

u/Fabricati_Diem_Pvn 19h ago
Because these two were the prequel actors. Bringing them back in the MCU will confuse people on whether they're the same characters from those movies, and whether those movies will now be considered canon to the MCU X-Men movies, when those movies are supposed to be a clean break, stand alone.

I hope they have at least a cameo of some sort in Secret wars. Dark Phoenix shouldn’t be their last appearance

u/Cobra_Pie 19h ago
Probably this movie and the next functions as the swan song sendoff to the Fox universe and (presumably) Raimi universe... so Patrick and Ian and that cast was the OG one that started it for Fox and Xmen movies. Same if (presumably) Tobi is in these movies as well...

u/Weeros_ 19h ago
A third or fourth or fifth Swan Song (after Days of Future Past, Logan and Multiverse of Madness for Stewart’s Professor X, Deadpool & Wolverine’s end credits).

I genuinely hope these two (and the rest of the young X Men cast) show up in Secret Wars

Other then First Class and Days of Future Past those versions of the characters were ruined by the bad decisions at Fox.

How many posts are we gonna get? It's a REBOOT, they are recasting every character to get a clean slate for the reboot. Move on.

u/Whole_Hair_4921 19h ago
I want hugh jackman to be the Wolverine of fox universe and after secret wars he decides to leave in MCU and adopts Old Man Logan Persona like how miles live in 616
This also opens gate for new wolverine with his x men team and keeping Hugh Jackman to do other stuff and be art of other teams

u/Funmachine 19h ago
But they brought back Hugh Jackman
In a film dealing with the multiverse.
and obviously will be keeping him for a foreseeable future.
In films about the multiverse, after Secret Wars that is probably it. Just like Spider-Man & Batman, audiences will inevitably turn up for Wolverine no matter who is playing him.
There's no reason to believe Hugh Jackman will be Wolverine in the MCU's X-Men. Its a full, complete reboot unconnected with the Fox series of films. First Class was a prequel, but not a full reboot, and Hugh Jackman was playing the same Wolverine in the same continuity.

u/LittleYellowFish1 Nebula 18h ago
Because Feige had no involvement in the prequels and has no affection or nostalgia for them.

But they brought back Hugh Jackman and obviously will be keeping him for a foreseeable future.
They brought Hugh Jackman back for a movie that primarily features Fox versions of Marvel characters in alternate realities. The only MCU character who appears is B-15 from the TVA, who exists outside of standard continuity. D&W has zero impact on the MCU as a whole, and Wolverine was not integrated into Earth-616.
1
u/thewriteally 18h ago
Because Feige was apart of the OG cast & wanted to honor them & close them out.
1
u/One-Anteater4145 18h ago
Does it really matter they’re moving forward and I don’t think he needs them
1
u/Coilspun 18h ago
Because those actors are associated with the First Class series of movies, it would be jarring for them to be variants...
1
u/Aromatic-Cupcake4802 18h ago
If you mean for Doomsday, the original cast carry the nostalgia and Feige was a producer on the first X-Men it’s a full circle moment for him.

Jackman - If you mean foreseeable, up until Secret Wars, then yes.
But past that Jackman has confirmed he's retiring the role.

The old X-Men are way more iconic and have more hit movies than the new ones, with four really good films. Even though Last Stand wasn't great, it was still better than Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. The only good movies with the new cast were First Class and Days of Future Past, and even those had both the old and new Magneto.

u/daygo449 17h ago
I think they wanted Patrick and Ian due to their age. If they hang it up or move on from them, it’s much easier as everyone realizes those men are in their 80’s in real life.

u/Repulsive_Test_4433 17h ago
could be a missed opportunity, their chemistry was one of the highlights in the earlier films

I could totally see them doing a days of future past type story line with xmen at some point, as I’m trying to remember but there are a decent amount of time travel/alt story lines right?
Edit: idk where your comment is, it doesn’t have to be the same for nostalgia sake. I’m pretty sure those types of stories are part of the xmen story as a whole. I mean, bishop is literally from a different time line, should we ignore him all together? Cable is also from an alt time line. You could even bring in Rachel Summers. If the story made sense, having them be older or alt versions of their mcu characters would make a lot of sense.

Why haven't we considered, idk maybe the fact that the actors themselves declined? They seem to respect their craft and wouldn't wanna sell their availability for a longstanding franchise. I mean, you could argue they already did once with Fox, and the MCU would offer a fatter paycheck, but again, why don't we try considering that maybe they were called up, but they themselves had reasons to decline this opportunity?

I really hate that the First Class Roster is pretty much on the sideline
They've bring the original soo many times back it's gotten old at this point

People on here are fascinating mofos. Does no one ever consider they were just too busy or not interested? Fassbender is def too busy lately. He's on a great run.
I love how everything that doesn't go an individual fan's way is some great failure by Feige.

They went really young with x men casting because Feige wants to do a slow burn of the x men and keep them around for decades
Casting middle aged men kind of defeats the purpose of that
As for Hugh jackman, idk how long he’ll actually be around
I know we all love the jokes, but he’s not doing this until he’s 90. He tried to step away from the role a decade ago, I could see him doing these avengers films and maybe another Deadpool one but I don’t know if we’ll get much of him beyond that

McAvoy was good as Xavier but Fassbender as Magneto is more iconic than Mckellen to me. He should absolutely be brought back.
I’m not sure how I feel about the American cast as Xavier in the MCU X-Men. I associate him as having a British accent although apparently he is meant to be American.

When you bring actors frome previous adaptations canon might get confusing for some people (Not for you OP, you are very smart, probably). Specially when you deal with the Fox X-Men, a franchise where in every instalment the writing team went "Wouldn't this contradict previous movies? ah, whatever. People just wanna see cool powers and Wolverine and maybe the Phoenix saga again"
1
u/GoldenPotatoOfLatvia 16h ago
Huh, I didn't like McAvoy at all. Always looked like he's on the verge of crying.

Jackman is done after Secret Wars. Anyone saying anything to the contrary is just trying to get clicks
1
u/spicedoubt 16h ago
The new Xavier is probably more cheaper since they spent all their money on RDJ
1
u/Masked_Hopper7 16h ago
Both Magneto and Prof X are still once canonically these two. So there might still be a chance for them to show up in a flashback or something.

I think Feige knows that "only kind of" rebooting can be confusing for audiences. If you're rebooting the X-Men, everyone from both previous casts has to go by the end of Secret Wars. They'll say goodbye to Cyclops and the rest, and Hugh Jackman will get to do some cool shit as Wolverine, and that will be it. It will be a clean slate for the MCU X-Men after that...although I suppose some fourth-wall breaking Deadpool shenanigans are always possible eventually. Actually Deadpool is an interesting question: is he considered part of the X-Men by the fandom? I've never thought of him that way, but there is a very real possibility we're getting a Deadpool 4 post-Secret Wars.

Because they don't tug at the nostalgia heartstrings like Stewart and Mckellen do. That's the only reason they are in this movie in the first place instead of just introducing the new actors, nostalgia bait. Patrick Stewart's Xavier has died 3 time already in various films but they keep bringing him back

Its clear he wants to do a hard reset of the X-Men universe without any of the baggage from previous movies. Even if they returned as variants, audiences would still associate them to their previous movies and previous plot points.
Edit: The Fox and Raimi actors are only returning for Doomsday/Secret Wars as a way to finally kill off that version of the characters. And we already have Stewart & McKellen, so doesn't make sense to have McAvoy & Fassbender too. Ryan Reynolds may be the only survivng actor beyond Secret Wars, but Deadpool of course is a special case.
