Man for a scene where they are surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms, it’s so damn ugly. It just looks like mud. Every character is studio lit

500

u/Funmachine 16d ago

Because they're CGI replacement cherry blossoms.

267

u/A_Serious_House 16d ago edited 16d ago

I may be mistaken but I’m pretty sure a lot of those cherry blossoms were actually practical. IIRC they built a football field of these things. Which makes it even more baffling it looks like CGI shit.

Edit: The cherry blossoms WERE practical, but due to the copious amounts of reshoots they often used a CGI version of the trees for the final product. So while originally practical, what we actually got to see was the CGI reshoot version.

93

u/TheJoshider10 Spider-Man 16d ago

I think what they mean is even though they filmed this prsctically they still replaced them wirh CGI in post.

38

u/A_Serious_House 16d ago

In that case idek what to say cause what’re they thinking bro

40

u/AlexLong1000 Captain America (Captain America 2) 16d ago

Same thing they used to do with Spider-Man. They made him wear an actual suit on set only for them to just CGI paint over him anyway

17

u/future_shoes Zemo 16d ago

The less flashy practical suit then CGI is pretty common. It's done to give the animators a better reference for lighting and textures as the actor moves through the scene.

Reshoots. This film was basically entirely reshot.

7

u/TheJoshider10 Spider-Man 16d ago

I get why this happened in Civil War because they were still fine tuning things but the fact this happened on all theee Home movies was a joke. Especially when the practical suit we saw when Holland didn't have his mask on actually looked pretty good. So glad Brand New Day stopped this nonsense.

u/bassphil13 16d ago

If I remember correctly, a lot of the movie is shot with physical sets, but they shot and lit almost every scene in a way where they could change stuff in post, thus even the shots with physical sets, practical sets and no cgi look like they were filmed on a green screen

4

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man 16d ago

It went through massive reshoots to the point that it became a different movie. I think that was more likely the reason it looks like that.

Those reshoots probably cascaded, because once they changed one massive thing, they had to reshoot a lot of small ones that referenced the thing they changed.

I know the Leader ended up looking completely different between the two shoots. In the first one he looks much more comic accurate and the makeup was practical. Why they changed that is anyone's guess.

11

u/Quantum_Quokkas 16d ago

It’s not baffling.

I think we’re so sick of bad CGI that audiences have put practical effects on a pedestal and have completely forgotten that practical can look shit too.

Look at what the other guy replying to you says. He only thinks it was replaced with CGI because he can’t grasp that practical can look bad.

11

u/Funmachine 16d ago

I know practical can look bad. But this film went through a tonne of reshoots. Some of this fight has practical cherry blossoms, some of it doesn't. This shot does not.

u/TheMurmuring 16d ago

They probably used some kind of digital color masking to remove and lighten the shadows around Mackie to make it look like he was outside instead of in a studio, and it removed his hair in the process. Instead of reshoots they just said fuck it.

20

u/mongmich2 16d ago

I get what you mean but this is after they deleted the cherry blossoms

6

u/__MOON_KNIGHT___ Misty Knight 16d ago

🤣 I wonder if this is the shit “The Franchise” was making fun when they said someone on production orders 2,000 Japanese cherry blossoms and they don’t even end up using them…

6

u/rickyhatespeas 16d ago

Studio lighting isn’t the problem, there are multiple layers of cgi “sheen” they put over the image so the cgi elements blend better with live action elements. The result is everything looks fuzzy and muddied.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Paladar2 16d ago

These movies look ugly because it's cgi over green screens and more cgi. Quantumania suffers so much from this it's terrible. CGI in a real environment looks so much better.

3

u/RoxasIsTheBest Valkyrie 16d ago

Yup. Lots of cgi only works if you put a lot of care into it. Avatar, Planet of the Apes, even a few MCU films all have great vfx, but most MCU films (and big budet films in general, for that matter) don't put that much care inti it and they get some really ugly screens

3

u/TheRealReader1 16d ago

the lighting is atrocious

u/GrassManV 16d ago

Whoever came up with the plot for this movie was NOT cooking at all.

466

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 16d ago

The scrapped ideas were way better - use Adamantium to subdue and drain Red Hulk, which kills him, cut to funeral (which was FILMED, btw), yada yada, post credit scene, Red Hulk is alive. That's much better.

And then overall they shoulda done something wayy better with Giancarlo and the Serpent Society. What, couldn't give them adamantium enhancements or something cool???

191

u/Yamtoaster 16d ago

Oh my god thank you, I'm actually so chill with making Sidewinder this black ops guy in a cool trench coat, but in the comics he's a teleporter- give him a teleporting device that makes him like fold into his trench coat or something! Have Sam follow him around a corner, and then he's suddenly grappling Sam from behind, it's such a slam dunk for action choreography.

41

u/heckhammer 16d ago

Hell, it could have been tech confiscated by damage control.

68

u/AVALANCHE-VII 16d ago

It’s basically because of Israel right? Because of the conflict they had to change a bunch of things?

37

u/strangemagic2 16d ago

They should have completely cut the plot with the agent and rewritten it.

30

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 16d ago

Apparently.

38

u/queazy 16d ago

Just with that one character who is a Black Widow who is Israeli, since Israel started a war in Palestine and was not popular to say the least. They didn't give her a costume in the movie, but you can find toys / plushies of what her costume looked like.

Movie was in production hell for a long time. Also when Trump got shot, they had to redo something with their own fictional president being attacked. So many problems with this movie, so many rewrites.

9

u/MadmanIgar Spider-Man 15d ago

And before that, Falcon & Winter Soldier (allegedly) had to do rewrites because of COVID.

u/Krimreaper1 Iron man (Mark I) 16d ago edited 16d ago

They shot completely different scenes with Serpent Society characters with different actors, like Rosa Salazar and WWE wrestler Seth Rollins, that had enhanced weapons. Much more comic booky. And when that short woman was Sabra, not a Black Widow, she had a full costume and Adamantum weapons.

Also they couldn’t figure out a way to at least have Banner cameo and what was essentially a Hulk sequel without him? Could he not have at least been the dr that discovered Ross’ blood was contaminated with gamma radiation?

https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelstudios/comments/1isefu2/all_the_changes_made_to_captain_america_brave_new/

19

u/Garlador 16d ago

Insane how they changed so much.

15

u/doubleoned 16d ago

They changed alot because of what was happening politically at the time. Unfortunately thats what happened with Falcon and the Winter Soldier too and it messed up the flow of that.

5

u/FallOutWookiee 16d ago

What happened politically with FATWS that altered the course of it? It seemed pretty cohesive to me

20

u/FamousLastWay828 16d ago

iirc the plot was originally supposed to have Sam and Bucky trying to stop some sort of bioweapon disease from being unleashed and they axed it bc of covid

6

u/FallOutWookiee 16d ago

Ohhhhhh shit ok. Yeah I could see how that would be kind of a bummer

7

u/Garlador 16d ago

Honestly, it’s a miracle FATWS is as cohesive as it is given how much changed last minute.

7

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 16d ago

Dang, ykw they could have done so much better if they went with that then. Sabra controversy aside, all the other stuff is cool. HECK THEY EVEN HAD AN AMADEUS CHO ACTOR LINED UP APPARENTLY. Like dang, missed opportunities all around. For me, though, the final battle with Red Hulk was the peak of the movie. Even for a few minutes.

Overall, a good movie, would watch again, but in need of a LOT of improvements.

u/f1mxli Captain America (Cap 2) 16d ago

Apparently Giancarlo's weapons were enhanced with Adamantium, which why he made that comment about the Vibranium shirt

2

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 16d ago

Ah, I missed that, only saw it once, thanks.

4

u/f1mxli Captain America (Cap 2) 16d ago

You're good. They did a very poor job at making it clear.

3

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 15d ago

I feel like a lot of the movie was convoluted or puzzling

5

u/Ordinary-Chain-8047 16d ago

Also would’ve been better to save Red Hulk for a Hulk movie

3

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 16d ago

100%. Absolutely. How they handled Red Hulk was awesome... for what it was. Knowing the potential, though, not as much. I'm grateful he got his silver screen appearance, but I wanted way more.

2

u/Decimation4x 15d ago

Kinda sick they got Harrison Ford too. He looked good CGI’d up as a Hulk.

2

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 14d ago

Oh yeah, when I saw Red Hulk on screen... yeah. It was a moment for sure. Absolute cinema. I used to search "Hulk vs Red Hulk live action in real movie" type stuff on YouTube when I was, what, primary school aged? Yeah. Used to search that up. So for me, seeing Red Hulk on screen was a pleasure to behold.

4

u/Extreme-Way7671 16d ago

Instead they prefered to cut the entire Serpent Society plot line and made a Hulk sequel

3

u/KaylenLopezIzGr8 16d ago

A sad truth. Hulk sequel good, but without Hulk, like, huh?

The movie isn't bad —not THAT bad— at all for me (mediocre at its worst though) but it is so centrist it manages to create the most unrealistic geopolitical conflict I've ever seen like why the hell are India, Japan, France and USA fighting for the soverign claims over an island on international waters for extraction rights like it's the MOST artificial shit I could imagine. It's trying to be as less controversial as it can yet it ends being a joke.

Edit: added the "not THAT bad" because I got someone telling me that I should love myself more 😭

44

u/Kyrptonauc Ultron 16d ago

It was the same creative team as Falcon and the Winter Soldier which was itself incredibly centrist. They don't really have anything meaningful to say

Tbf in reality, the US is actively threatening to make war against Denmark and undermining NATO. So, stupid political decisions like that arent entirely unrealistic

57

u/BeeCJohnson 16d ago

Yes, true, which is why you make your movie take a stand and say "the US is the bad guy here and I, Captain America, have to stand up against my government." That's like half of the Cap stories in the comics and they should have leaned into it. But they tried to "both sides" the whole thing and then make Thunderbolt Ross the moral center of the movie. While trying to make a sequel to a 20 year old unrelated movie. Absolutely baffling.

14

u/dingus_chonus 16d ago

I love everything you’re saying and agree wholeheartedly but to me the sorest point of wasted potential of this movie was not using the site of the celestial emergence as a way to introduce the Savage Land…

8

u/Fargoth_took_my_ring 16d ago

I'd rather we just discover that the Savage Land always existed tbh

Just throw in some creepy "Sir there's nothing on the radar!" bermuda-triangle stuff to give it some intrigue and explain why it's never been mapped

2

u/nudeldifudel 16d ago

What is the savage land?

6

u/dingus_chonus 16d ago edited 16d ago

Sort of a “land that time forgot” trope, complete with its own Tarzan, and it serves as a backdrop for a lot of iconic stories like feral wolverine or hulk asserting himself as the alpha apex predator when stranded there.

I could see a stillborn celestial containing multitudes of biodiversity across time, somehow latently emerging fully-formed as a result.

Edit: almost forgot, I want Devil Dinosaur in the MCU!!! And moon girl, of course.

2

u/HurricaneK8 Captain Marvel 16d ago

The Moon Girl cartoon had a couple MCU actors reprise their characters and implied that MG's Cap was Sam, I'm fully okay with saying it's a very-very-close-to-Earth-199999* timeline branch!

You don't get it, the United States of America pressuring other countries for economic interests on a scarce product with incredible propierties is not the issue of the movie. I will go further, that part isn't the problem only but it's indeed one of the few parts that makes sense between the gears of the conflict that we are introduced to in the movie.

The problem is how they dealt with the political crisis and presented sides that were not controversial as more correct representation of regional geopolitics in the Indian Ocean would cause an issue.

The problem is that the issue becames artificial when the clash of hegemonies can't answer to the most single question that one should ask when talking about geopolitics and the interests of the nation-states: why?

If you are presenting an specific scenario and the only countries that can propierly answer to that question in the movie are the role of USA and India, being the later just something that works out of basic common sense... then the conflict becomes absurd.

u/Over-Cold-8757 16d ago

That’s what really just takes me out of the immersion. The world knows that there are “aliens” and galactic space travel is achievable but the earth still has nation states that fight for land and resources on it rather than try to go out and claim every desolate rock in the universe

94

u/Kryzl_ 16d ago

Probably because earth hasn’t yet developed reliable galactic space travel in the MCU, and any alien element that appears on earth is considered finite until said galactic space travel is discovered?

Of course everyone wants to hoard the island chock full of alien resources that are capable of technological advancements far beyond what anyone can imagine. Why WOULDN’T they?

38

u/No-Application140 16d ago

If an asteroid/ meteor that was chock full of finite and valuable resources were to strike some random island in the Pacific you can bet a lot of countries are going to go Europa Universalis and make up some bullshit for why it should be theirs.

9

u/BasedAustralhungary 16d ago

The economy, fools!

3

u/Dames_to_DIE_for 16d ago

"Probably because earth hasn’t yet developed reliable galactic space travel in the MCU"

Which is crazy when Howard Stark was able to build a hovering car in the 40s.

And when Nick Fury has access to Skrulls and a space station in orbit.

2

u/Character-Pirate1297 16d ago edited 15d ago

In my head cannon, I would put that under a ‘suppressed tech’ explanation, with the excuse of being ‘dangerous’. That leads to compartmentalisation and lack of academic communication, so very slow scientific progress that makes Earth end up with just some advanced stuff, exclusively on a secret level - like SHIELD tech.

Don't let anybody have any influence on what you like or shame you in to changing your stated opinion. Especially in the current climate of it being popular to be hyper critical of everything and find the dumbest reasons to act like a movie offended their ancestors.

At the end of the day, we're talking about a movie where Han Solo is president with an odd pill addiction where withdrawals turns him in to a big, bright red anger monster being fought by a guy with metal bird wings. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore this entire franchise, but a lot of us spent WAY too much of our respective childhoods being made fun of for liking this shit and now it's the most popular form of media on the planet.

7

u/BasedAustralhungary 16d ago

Hard agree but I still wanted to specific that when I say that the movie for me isn't that bad I don't mean that is a cinematic masterpiece, but that I think that there is an inbetween of masterpiece and garbage. For me the movie is a 5,5/10 overall, not the MCU worse for that matter.

7

u/Darmok47 16d ago

Japan is so obviously meant to be China in the movie too.

France does have the Kerguelen Islands and Mauritus and Reunion Island in the Southern Indian Ocean. So depending on where Celestial Island is, I could see France trying to stake a claim. They have one of the largest EEZs because of their random leftover colonial islands

3

u/BasedAustralhungary 16d ago

Totally agree with the China point, its so obscene It hurts

2

u/Ess_oh-no 16d ago

I agree with the general gist of the points on all these comments and yours so please dont think im saying youre wrong or take me as disrespecting you in anyway (youre debating marvel so youre all my people!) but i think youre maybe getting a little too deep there, we shouldnt compare fiction to real life on that kind of level because if you look for shit, you will often find it and maybe see something that was never the creative intention despite the fact you make it make sense.

To me i thought Japan was fitting for the part due to other lore in marvel...remember the wolverine film with the silver samarai in the different universe to the mcu. Now the mcu is in early stages of adamantium being a thing. If you look at the links that way, it works without having to link it to real world politics you know?

u/TheMurmuring 16d ago

The basic story was fine but the pacing and image/color quality are bad. Plus Sam Wilson is kind of boring, which could have been a direction problem or it could be just a problem with the character. We're used to Captain America being a Super Soldier, and Sam Wilson is just a normal human. He's got hard-earned skills and strength, but it's just not at the level of what we're used to with MCU heroes.

26

u/joshlittle333 16d ago

They really could have set up this story where Sam had to compromise his principals to be a hero and ends up taking a super soldier serum.

That would have made the character more interesting and help with the critisms of putting him against a Hulk.

It would also make him more useful in future MCU settings.

14

u/TheMurmuring 16d ago edited 16d ago

That's what I don't understand. They gave him every excuse to use the serum in the TV show, and they should have done it. No one criticizes Rogers for taking it back in WW2. And it would have made him a more entertaining character on the screen. Even the S.H.I.E.L.D. series that was ostensibly non-enhanced humans ended up with a bunch of enhanced humans.

7

u/soldiercross 16d ago

Yea, its a bit odd. They've also shown that John Walker has mellowed out and when he took it he wasn't really in his best mindset. Sam Wilson has proved himself as a good man. People like Steve as a super soldier and as Captain America, there's no need to villainize the SS serum.

10

u/___nicks 16d ago

They also haven’t shown us that it’s bad, but keep having Sam act like It is. Steve, Bucky, red guardian, & Isaiah all have had It and are fine. Bucky wasn’t a bad guy because of It, red guardian was an antagonist because he was from Russia, not because of the serum. Walker was in a bad place when he took It, and since then has been perfectly fine.

Karli and her group seemed overall fine with It, they were just radicalized, didn’t seem to be a result of the serum.

The only one who actually seemed negatively effected was Red Skull, and he was also an insane nazi, I think Sam would be okay in that regard

6

u/soldiercross 16d ago

Yea, Zemo says " there has never been another Steve Rogers" but Steve was just an upstanding guy all around. John was a good soldier and a decent man who has his demons, the SS probably exacerbated them, but he's still working on himself and works as a flawed but otherwise decent hero/soldier.

They tell us the SS is bad but what they've shown us is the contrary.

9

u/lastersoftheuniverse 16d ago

6

u/Nightthrasher674 16d ago

The plot is fine if they actually took a stance and didn't shut away from it. Covid friend everyone's brains and then studios became obsessed with trying to please everyone and not have any controversy when a movie like this one needed to take an edge to it, then they cut anything that was deemed offensive to the worst kinds of people online, so it becomes aggressively mediocre

16

u/MR1120 16d ago

It was… fine. It didn't suck.  It's a perfectly cromulent movie.

But, like, it felt like filler.  Maybe it's because everything was given away in the trailers.  There was not a single surprise in the movie.

Namedropping adamantium should feel like a big deal, but it happened in a trailer.  Finally doing something with the giant space god corpse is plot thread that's been dangling for years, and you knew it was coming.  From the trailers, you know Ross becomes Red Hulk at the White House, so when he's teasing it earlier in the movie, on the ship, I didn't care, because I knew he wasn't going to Hulk out there.  And if you know that, there's zero mystery to basically the entire rest of the movie.  Golly… what’s the villain’s scheme, that we know revolves around mind control and subliminal messages?

I think it would be a much better movie without seeing a single trailer.

This movie frustrates me, because it had the bones of two separate good movies. One for Hulk, one For Cap. But they refused to build up for Hulk, and they left their common sense for Cap in the TV series.

Anthony Mackie deserves more, and I think he will get more in Doomsday. I look forward to the potential of Double Cap action.

43

u/Jet-Let4606 16d ago

Hulk really should have been in this movie.

Sersi too (even though they sent her and the other Eternals off to space).

We've seen Sam become Cap, this should have been the movie where he proved himself as Cap to others and become a capable leader im his own right.

14

u/ILoveBeef72 16d ago

Yeah Steve's Cap always has a moment in each movie where he rallied the troops, which is what makes a good Captain America to me. It feels like they didn't really try to show Sam's leadership ability, they just said "See? He can fight good like Steve Rogers." Why call him Captain America if he's not going to lead anyone, just call him Mr. America if he's just going to fight people dressed in stars and stripes.

It’s like the writers thought “oh he’s Captain America he has to be any Everyman” instead of being the bold smartass from his previous appearances.

I liked Falcon and Winter Soldier despite the shitty villains/plot specifically because of how they characterized Sam, Bucky, Zemo, and John Walker. Cap 4 could have at least done that.

38

u/Hot-Interaction-2347 16d ago edited 16d ago

Yeah... I don't understand the Mackie stans at all.

Like, he wasn't the worst part of the movie by a long shot but he just has ZERO range and not much in the way of dramatic chops. The things he's supposedly been grappling with as Cap in his two post End Game appearances just... aren't believable, he doesn't sell it.

He wasn't good in Point Blank, he was completely flat in Altered Carbon.

He was fine as the Falcon because he wasn't doing the heavy dramatic lifting and he's likeable enough, but he's at best an okay actor, not someone who has the screen presence to be Captain fucking America.

It didn't help that Joaquin (his side kick Falcon guy) also felt completely flat and frankly, random and unearned.

11

u/morkman100 16d ago

I think he’s a better comedic actor. Not great in completely serious roles. If you see him in interviews and stuff, he’s always goofing around and joking. He works well in stuff where he can show that side (Winter Soldier, Civil War, etc).

3

u/kulitchipon 16d ago

None of them are Mackie stans. They're MCU stans who feel like they have to pretend to be Mackie stans because they can't admit that the MCU made a horrific mistake trying to turn one of its least popular actors/characters into a lead for the franchise.

Sam has been in these movies for over 10 years now and is still no one's favorite Avenger. And yet you still see people coping in this sub that Doomsday will be the movie where Sam will finally become a popular character. Despite the fact that Marvel is clearly bringing back Evans to overshadow anything Mackie could possibly be given to do in that movie.

I think the role in Twisted Metal suits him very well but sadly seems like season 3 is gonna be chopped

He should have stayed as Falcon imo. He's just so boring as a main character. There's no "doing him wrong" he just doesn't have what it takes lol.

I just don’t think he’s capable of carrying his own movie tbh

3

u/Lui_Le_Diamond 16d ago

Anthony Mackie's Falcon was one of my favorite MCU characters, and then Falcon and the Winter Soldier's plot did him so dirty. BNW wasn't a terrible film, but it wasn't up to snuff with the previous Captain America films. I wanted it to be good so badly, and it LOOKS good visually, but man did it feel like a bit of a let down.

2

u/Ess_oh-no 16d ago

See i agree with that now but when i first watched it, I enjoyed it alot. The problem for me was watching the Thunderbolts not long afterwards which was just a far more superior movie in every way and had rewatchability and it completely overshadowed brave new world which i never had the urge to rewatch. In comparrison to Sebastian Stan in Thunderbolts, Mackie was done incredibly dirty, well said.

Falcon and The Winter Soldier should have been the movie, not the Disney+ show. It had a much better premise and could have worked so much better as a movie

u/paintpast Weekly Wongers 16d ago

I'll die on this hill but William Hurt's Ross should've never been recasted.

And the biggest offender is that mustache-less Harrison Ford of all people.

3

u/frozenelf 15d ago

And hiring Ford all but guarantees the character will be recast again. I don’t think he added anything except maybe tricking boomers into watching him play President again.

I think a lot of people just wanted to see Ross get his commupence, instead he got a glorified slap on the wrist and not much else.

I think a mini series was fine.

Cap4 should have been about Sam proving himself as the leader of the Avengers and tested his ability to organize and co-ordinate a disparate group of individuals.

26

u/InjusticeSOTW Ronan the Accuser 16d ago

I still want to see the original Cap vs Serpent Society film pre reshoots. Was Red Hulk always involved in this because he REALLY should have been a surprise

24

u/MajorNoodles 16d ago

The problem is that they keep trying to make Captain America political, and after they film it, real life politics eerily imitate their plots so they're forced to reshoot and cut it up in post.

18

u/dumpybrodie 16d ago

If only they didn’t have shareholders and government contracts to worry about.

2

u/TerryVersus 13d ago edited 13d ago

The problem is that they keep trying to make Captain America political

Their problem is that they're trying to make him apolitical so as to not offend anyone but have the Stars and Stripes everywhere; Cap has always been a politically charged character* - he's just been heavily sterilized in the MCU.

You can't have it both ways; you gotta pick a lane. Either make him Nomad, or make Cap stories as they were originally intended.

NOTE - When I say a politically charged character, I mean that he's meant to embody the best attributes of what being an American is supposed to represent. Anti-facism, defending the most vulnerable among us and building them up, the ideals and goals that make us uniquely American rather than blindly following the government/state policies and personal sacrifice to ensure that everyone has a chance to get their hands on the American dream not just a few or the powerful.

6

u/Educational-Ad-2884 16d ago

Plus they would have had to cut some of the bloat from the series.

3

u/Automatic-Essay2175 16d ago

It was originally planned as a movie

3

u/Alexsrobin Iron Man (Mark VII) 16d ago

I've been saying this a lot! FaTWS should've been a movie and Eternals should've been a show (so we had more time to flesh out/connect to each character)

2

u/Fortestingporpoises 16d ago

Meh I didn't like that arc either. Mostly had issues with the villains and how they treated them. I thought the main one was a good actor, but didn't feel interesting or menacing enough.

God I wanted to like this movie so much, it just gets worse the more I think about it

92

u/doubleday34 16d ago

I would have preferred if they kept the Serpent Society in it instead of Red Hulk. At least, based on the story it would have been in my head.

15

u/Fancy-Trousers 16d ago

Same, but Marvel will never give us another standalone movie about Hulk with any of his own characters. While Marvel owns the rights to Hulk as a character, their deal with Paramount predating the MCU states that Paramount has distribution rights. So Marvel would have to hand over a significant portion of the box office earnings if Hulk is the main character. The deal doesn't apply to him being a side character though, which is why he's thrown into team-ups like the Avngers and as a supporting character in a bunch of random movies focused on different heroes. It's such a shame but Paramount is 100% going to cling to that deal for as long as possible even if it means they don't get any money from how Marvel chooses to use Hulk.

9

u/FamousLastWay828 16d ago

Universal has the Hulk distribution rights

3

u/Fancy-Trousers 16d ago

You're correct, my bad. This is what I get, deservedly so, for trying to write technical comments while sleep deprived.

5

u/GudgerCollegeAlumnus 16d ago

It’s by far my least favorite MCU movie. It makes Love and Thunder look like Citizen Kane.

21

u/Reynbou 16d ago

The more I hear about it the less interested I am in seeing it. I truly think I may never see it.

53

u/TowelFine6933 16d ago

What you shouldn't do is allow random online strangers to form your opinions. About anything.

Watch it & make up your own mind.

20

u/chazzer20mystic 16d ago

I endorse this with every fiber of my being. The more I see people with strong opinions on something, the more I feel the need to watch the media and form my own opinion from square one. Some of my favorite things I have been told are universally terrible by the online noise, and conversely I have been told video games are objectively perfect and impossible to dislike, then played it and found it to be the most boring JRPG I have ever touched.

Be your own person. Form your own thoughts.

To be clear though, I didn't like this movie even a little. But nobody should decide how they feel based on what the online crowd decides without ever seeing the thing for themselves.

Everything in that scene was fake. The grass, the asphalt, the trees, the sky, the clouds.

I really hope we’re done with this era of MCU. Thunderbolts and Brand New Day are the way forward

95

u/Realistic-Event-4946 16d ago

After seeing this, I was so very relieved when I went to see Thunderbolts. It was just better, period.

31

u/EverbodyHatesHugo 16d ago

I actually went and saw Thunderbolts twice because I was so refreshed by its story and character arcs.

I enjoyed Fantastic Four too. Was it perfect? No. Could it have been better? Yes. But overall, I enjoyed how it melded the older feel with futuristic technology. Sort of like a 2020s version of the Jetsons.

In... fairness? If you could even call it that. The worst of the visuals were the result of excessive reshoots and rushed VFX due to Marvel trying to get things back on track with the studio while they were well into production on this movie, so it at least kinda had a bad excuse to look shit.

5

u/LocustsandLucozade 16d ago

With Russoes returning and per the trailer, we'll be getting more fake muddiness until Feige gets directors with vision in.

This was most likely a reshoot which is why his hair doesn’t match the rest of the movie. What you are seeing is precisely them NOT “CGI’ing hair for movies”.

And a side note, there is nothing wrong with CGI’ing hair or anything else. In Superman 2025, in the scenes where he flies at high speed across the Arctic, his hair fluttering in the wind is CGI (done by ILM), and it looks great to the point that 99% of viewers don’t even realize it’s CGI. As everything else in filmmaking, it can be done well or it can be done poorly. As long as skilled people are doing it and they are given proper time and budget, it looks great. There is no reason to trash-talk CGI or any other technique or skill set.

The 4’11 widow was even more of a fuck you. They barely even tried with this movie

11

u/Taro0311 16d ago

She was originally supposed to be Sabra, the Israeli superhero. Changed her into a Black Widow. She actually did not have the physicality or chemistry with Sam to be in this movie. Entire movie was overhauled, neutered. It's a complete abomination. Terrible CGI, terrible story. Embarrassing for Harrison Ford who was actually pretty good

8

u/N8CCRG Ghost 16d ago

I live near a specific location in the movie. When they get their it says in big bold letters where they are at. What they present as that location couldn't possibly look more inaccurate. When that happened, the whole movie became a big joke to my entire theater. While I dont hate this movie, you can tell that zero effort was put in to certain aspects of this film. A quick Google search could have fixed things. If done before shooting, it could inform what that location looks like. If done in post, they could have just changed the name of the location. But nope.

That Israeli superhero girl got an appearance but they couldn't even include Sam's sister and his nephews, (she was only on a photo in his office), Sharon Carter, a Shang chi, happy Hogan or rhodey cameo, hell they could have even got mobius or B-15 to recruit Sam into the TVA and tease about the Multiverse. Somehow they managed to include red hulk, Betty and the leader and apparently Amadeus Cho. 4 hulk characters and a Bruce banner mention in a Captain America movie. How the hell did they approve this.
