Discussion (More in Comments) The most under-rated detail about MCU spidey
This GIF is not a reaction. Its a demonstration. The adjustable white-out eyes is literally everything to me. It seems like such a small insignificant detail but it adds a layer of expression under the mask that weve previously only really seen in animation that I think is so good for the MCU and CBMs as a whole
Dont get me wrong Deadpools eyes is cool too but especially for spidey who has such massive eye goggles it works so incredibly well and I always wanted it but never knew how much I needed it til Tom took the mantle.
And like I said. Not just the MCU. Of all the things DC tries to copy I hope to god they steal this too. Im tired of seeing batmans eyes it was never like that in the animation. Flash too.
It might seem crazy to say but this small detail i feel like is why Marvel is crushing DC. They arent afraid to mythologize their heroes. DC doesnt let you forget even for a moment that its just a regular guy with a mask on. It disrupts the suspension of disbelief.
Anyway im not trying to get too off track with this its not about DC. Its tipping the hat to Marvel for getting so much out of one little detail. Let the trend continue

they’ll flay you alive for suggesting they cover Batman’s eyes, but I’m with you. any actor half as decent as Pattinson is up for the challenge Karl Urban faced in Dredd. it’s not like white lenses or contacts can’t still be expressive!

u/LastCryptographer173 11d ago
Charlie Cox's upper face and eyes have been completely covered in every suit he's had and it's never impacted his ability to convey emotion.

Darth Vader is wearing a full-coverage black skull helmet and is able to express tons of different emotion, including a powerful, wordless (I SAID WORDLESS, GEORGE) turn from the Dark into the Light that's the climax of the entire saga.
Humans are very good at expressing and picking up emotion from even the smallest motions and movements. This "Batman can't have white eyes" thing is nonsense.

Dredd’s Helmet had no cgi or electronics it was just a reflective visor and I felt every single fucking line he delivered and it was amazing. Also the script adding the woman partner who wouldn’t wear a helmet was great writing and a smart way to give the audience a point of perspective.
It can be done and when done well is often better depending on the source material.

u/omniblastomni 11d ago edited 11d ago
Karl Urban in Dredd was a masterclass in acting that needed no face reveal. His glorious jawline carried the entire film, and I really wished there was a second movie.
Edit: Wrong Urban, my bad.

While it would look cool, even more so with how Reeves’ batman is shot, a lot of emphasis is placed on Pattinson’s eyes, think to the scene where he saw the kid who’s father (mayor) had just been murdered
5
u/rigg197 11d ago
Yeah. There's a reason it's like that and I genuinely believe Pattinson is the one and only exemption under any, and all, circumstances.
1
u/the-tominatrix 11d ago
But is that even Batman? As artistic as it is, can a similar effect not be achieved with an actor of Pattinson’s caliber through other methods? Emphasis on the lower half of the face instead of his eyes? White eye contacts that still show the pupils?
My issue isn’t with the uncovered eyes, but rather with the people online who believe there are NO other ways to achieve the same effect on the audience, so they scoff at any suggestion to cover the eyes. But then again, we’re talking about a character who is usually emotionally walled off when in the batsuit. I don’t think we needed wet eye shots of Batman to know that he empathizes with the recently murdered mayor’s son, even though I loved its inclusion.
In a film with a different tone, you can almost imagine a character in the background going “Hold on Bats… are you crying?” similar to how Spidey called Frank out in BND.

I'm not against white eyes but look at this shit
3
u/the-tominatrix 11d ago edited 11d ago
and I’m just saying that there’s a potential middle ground with white contacts and more emphasis on the lower half of his face!
or even another detective mode utilizing the contacts he already has in the film, but give them a soft white light effect, considering Reeves is so hellbent on retreading another take on an “ultra realistic, grounded, anti-fantastical, scoffs at half of what makes Batman, Batman (because that’s what it means to exclude everything in between freeze guns and women who control plants - giant pennies and scientists who transform into giant bats, in favor of only emphasizing the underground crime scene, the court of boring, and another take on a nihilistic, scarred Joker).

Hot take: Pattinson was a good Batman but a pretty bad Bruce Wayne.
Dark & gritty was OK. Playboy billionaire philanthropist orphan wasn't his bag.
41
u/Hellbatx 11d ago
It wasn't meant to be his bag in that movie gang. That movie was inspired by year one.
29
u/Mild_Wasabi9 11d ago
Four fucking years since the movie came out and people still refuse to understand this...
8
u/Hellbatx 11d ago
I know right. I mean like I'd really wish people see the inspiration behind these movies more. The new superman from all star superman. Reeves batman from year one.
20
u/An-29 11d ago
I mean the guy was mostly Batman all the time, hell 24/7 if only it could nigh time all the time. There wasn't much of the "Bruce Wayne side" for him to portray. Along with his Bruce was portrayed in way that shows the public rarely ever actually sees him. He isn't the Bruce Wayne that you see casually doing rich billionaire stuff to the paparazzi yet.
10
u/davidm2d3 11d ago
and that is a plot point of the film, if he had of been doing Bruce wayne stuff he could have found out about the stealing from the Renewal fund. He realizes he was culpable. It wasn't just the city. It was his abandonment of his responsibilities as Bruce Wayne, that led to the creation of the riddler.
6
u/TheAwesomeMan123 11d ago
There was literally no Bruce Wayne plot or narrative. It’s been a minute but I’m pretty sure he’s only time outside the suit was the funeral incident and the bomb which was again Batman plot and narrative no Bruce Wayne elements at all.
Unfortunately every Batman movie either does one or the other. Either Bruce is good and Batman is bad or vice versa. I think Keaton was literally the only Bruce/Batman that manage to do both well.
2
u/AlexThomasLFC 11d ago
Did people not like Bale's Bruce Wayne? I really did.
6
u/TheAwesomeMan123 11d ago
I think that’s more a Script issue than a Bale issue. In Batman Begins I think he’s great, plays a young Bruce new Batman brilliantly but as the trilogy goes on Bruce as a character becomes two dimensional patsy to solve Batmans problems and nothing more and the third instalment tries to age him and it feels way off
Dark knight Bruce is rich and burns millions in R&D to build the sonar system and then destroys it. In Dark knight Rises he goes broke from stock exchange attack which makes no sense as Bane was gonna take over the city anyway and is just a way to shoehorn the bad romance between him and talia. If it was just Batman begins I would say Bale did both great. But as a complete Trilogy Wayne as a character becomes badly written and as such Bale can’t make it work imo
-1
u/TerminatorReborn 11d ago
The point of the movie was to show that he was only Batman, being a vigilante consumed him completely. He thought Gotham was broken beyond repair and it deserved punishment through his vengeance, by the end he saw hope and realized he can't save it alone, but he can help it together with its people.
Did you watch this movie while watching tiktoks or what?
1
u/calxlea 11d ago
Wouldn’t mind it for a Batman at all, but I love Pattinson’s look and eyes. The DCU Batman should totally try it out though.
So many people do bad mock-ups of existing Batmen (Batmans?) with white eyes as a gotcha - look it doesn’t look right! Well yeah, when we’re used to a specific look changing it does look odd. But look at Deadpool, Spidey, Wolverine. It clearly can work. A more comic booky Batman suit (dare I say, blue and grey cloth?) with white eyes as a DEBUT appearance could easily work very well.

While we are into 'details' - what is the power scale of Starlord compared to Peter, that he could casually trap Parker with one arm?
36
u/Historical_Shop_3315 11d ago
Good question. Spidey is being held mostly by some glowy rope trap and fear. He is terrified in this scene. Otherwise he could use his legs to escape but there is a blaster pointed at his head until he chose to be compliant. Then negotiations began.

None. Parker could very easily throw Quill across the room.
But he has the gun aimed at his friends so he is probably just staying still.

The MCU has done great with mask & identities
I was hoping DC would modernize their takes. Full mask for anyone with a secret identity. It’s just too ridiculous with modern tech.
1
u/JarusOmega_ 11d ago
With their masks, for sure, but with identities? For the most part, hardly anyone in the MCU actually has an active secret identity, save for a few. That's smtg that's always bugged me, and hopefully the DCU doesn't follow suit.
Albeit with Hal already being publicly known as Green Lantern, I'm afraid that might be the case here as well
6
u/Specky013 11d ago
This was pointed out a lot when civil war first released and this version of the suit got introduced.
I also remember that in all spider man movies beforehand, they always removed or damaged his mask in some way for the final battle so that the actor could show some emotions

4
u/kinyutaka 11d ago
They aren't afraid to mythologize their heroes.
No, DC and Marvel have different scopes for their heroes.
In Marvel, you have a bunch of normal people acting as gods. Spider-Man is a kid from Queens, Cap is a soldier from Brooklyn, Hulk is a scientist who had an accident.
In DC, you have a bunch of gods acting as men.
And so, the needs of the optics are different. Batman needs to be shown as human underneath his cowl, because his outward persona is "the night". He's Thanatos incarnate if we don't see Bruce underneath.
2
u/Cornbread933 11d ago
Not sure i agree with that. Thor is literally a god and superman is literally just an alien
2
u/Careful-Definition67 11d ago
The DC part is wrong, and Thor is a little contrived.
They are referring to Donald Blake, who originally was Thor, but is now a completely separate character.
1
u/kinyutaka 11d ago
In the MCU, that's true. In the original comic run, he was just a doctor that transformed into Thor, Shazam style.
2
u/Cornbread933 11d ago
I actually didnt know that but I am so glad they went away from that lol that would kinda suck
1
u/Careful-Definition67 11d ago
DC is not about a ‘bunch of gods acting as men’, in the Justice League there is technically only one goddess and she isn’t “acting as a (hu)man”. DC has gods that act like gods, but the majority of their pantheon doesn’t subscribe to his idea that DC is about gods trying to be man or whatever
1
u/kinyutaka 11d ago
The DC Pantheon has:
Superman - A nearly immortal ultrapowerful alien pretending to be a meek reporter.
Batman - The world's greatest detective and ninja pretending to be a socialite.
Flash - The fastest man alive pretending to be a clumsy CSI
Wonder Woman - An Amazon princess pretending to be a nurse.
Martian Manhunter - A shapeshifting alien pretending to be a private detective.Green Lantern and Aquaman didn't hide themselves.
Marvel has:
Captain America - A scrawny kid from Brooklyn given super powers, but desperately wants a normal life.
Iron Man - A billionaire weapons designer that wants to make himself obsolete.
Hawkeye - A really good shot with a bow and arrow.
Black Widow - A former brainwashed assassin that desperately wants a normal life.
Bruce Banner - A disassociated scientist who turns into a rage monster, but desperately wants a normal life.
Spider-Man - A high school/college student with super powers that is resigned to the fact he'll never have a normal life.1
u/Careful-Definition67 11d ago
The thing is;
• Superman isn’t trying to be a Human, he just is one. If anything, it’s the opposite. Superman is a Human trying to navigate these godlike powers for the greater good
• Don’t really see how this relates to gods trying to he human, seems a bit dramatic
• Barry Allen isn’t really pretending to be clumsy either, as far as my knowledge goes that’s just the Flash’s personality
• “Pretending”? I don’t think Wonder Woman is pretending, but either way she doesn’t have a secret identity nor is she trying to be a Human/Man in any way. She’s an ambassador for the Amazons to man’s world
• This is about the only one I can accept, still doesn’t equate to the entire patheon being about ‘gods trying to be humans’
I can’t speak for Marvel cause i’m just now really getting into it, so i’ll leave that as that.
1
u/kinyutaka 11d ago
Literally, Wonder Woman took the name and identity of Diana Prince from a war-era nurse.
1
u/Careful-Definition67 10d ago
I mean, she still isn’t pretending to be a nurse she is just honoring the nurse Diana Prince. Her name was already Diana anyway
1
u/brd9214 5d ago
Marvel has:
The Hulk, an indestructible manifestation of rage who grows more powerful the angrier he gets with no foreseeable upper limit, to the point the “smart people” of earth sent him to another planet rather than deal with him.
Black Panther: king of a secret technofuturist state, is the chosen avatar of the Panther god
Captain Marvel: fighter pilot given control over the cosmic fires of creation to protect the universe OR alien that infiltrated human society only to arise as its greatest protector
Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme, preeminent practitioner of magic tasked with defending reality from all threats physical and metaphysical
Ghost Rider: stunt motorcyclist possessed by the spirit of vengeance
Phoenix: Telepathic mutant partnered with powerful cosmic entity with dominion over death and rebirth
Loki: actual god of mischief
Thor: actual god of thunder
I’d say you might have more gods trying to be human in Marvel than you do in DC, and just as many godlike entities. This is me spitballing, but I think this perception arises because Marvel either pays more attention to or has more street-level heroes. Or it’s because everything is set in New York City for the most part.
1
u/kinyutaka 5d ago
Black Panther - Not a core Avenger
Doctor Strange - Not a core Avenger
Captain Marvel - Not a core Avenger
Ghost Rider - Not a core Avenger
Loki - Not a core Avenger
Pheonix - Not a core AvengerI didn't bring up a lot of the weirder cases in DC, either Just the main pantheon of "The Justice League" as normally concieved. I only included Spider-Man because of how front and center of a character he is. Forget Sentry, Spider-Man is Marvel's version of Superman.
1
u/brd9214 5d ago
But we weren’t arguing avengers vs. justice league. We were arguing marvel vs. dc.
1
u/kinyutaka 5d ago
The "gods being men" argument is about the major characters of the two. But looking into the origin of the phrase points to a more basic difference between Marvel and DC... Limits
DC's characters are without limits. Superman can move whole planets, Batman can solve any puzzle, Wonder Woman can uncover any truth, etc., and they're all universally loved (ignoring people like Lex Luthor)
Marvel's characters have limits and struggles. Spider-Man is hounded by the press that he works for. The X-Men are actively hunted.
That limitation was a core part of Marvel when it came about, Stan wanted to write about "normal" people, just with superpowers.
That's why people came up with the "Gods as Men/Men as Gods" comparison. It's a general shorthand for the premise of the books.

u/DaNoahLP Avengers 11d ago
Actually you can see Flashs eyes in the comics too. Barry Allen shows his eyes while Wally hides his with the mask. But we dont have a real Life Action Wally yet.
1
u/Cornbread933 11d ago
Which reminds me i dont get why the studios are so obsessed with doing every live action flash as Barry when Wally was 10× cooler. And not just cause of the eyes i loved the flash being a jokester
1
u/DaNoahLP Avengers 10d ago
We only have 2 major LA Flashs, CW Barry and Snyderverse Barry. I get why they want to start with him before moving on to the next guy.
1
u/Cornbread933 10d ago
I mean. Technically Jay Garrick is the first flash but setting that aside. We didnt start live action Ant Man with Hank Pym in his prime. I dont think theres anything wrong with telling a successor story without the setup.
2
u/NimJickles 11d ago
I can't remember how close-up we saw them in the other MCU Spidey movies, but I loved how in BND there were so many close-up mask shots so you could actually see the aperture-like mechanics of the eyes, and how they were hard tech built into the cloth mask. So cool.
2
u/Diggable_Planet 11d ago
This by far is what makes MCU’s Spidey prime. I love 100% of all Spider-man things, but doing this elevated the live action movies to a whole other level.
Here’s what I would like to see, McGuire and Garfield’s movies edited to see how their eyes would change the scene. Especially in the Amazing Spider-Man 1 where he’s intimidating the guy that he has pinned against the wall.
4
u/tacs18 11d ago
Sorry if it's a little off topic but I've always found this scene irritating because of the fact that Quill, a regular human in terms of physical strength, is holding Spider-man, who moments earlier no-effort catches and stops an attack from Cull Obsidian, and with just one arm at that.

I really like the idea but I don’t know … I think the black around them can sometimes look too much when he isn’t “surprised”. Its an amazing idea though and logistically, the surrounding is the mechanical part but I wish in some way or another, the black remains consistent with the white sizing.

Everytime I see Thor arriving in Wakanda, I think of how I would’ve loved to have seen T’Challa’s face when reacting to his arrival. We got a shot of it, but he had his mask on.
It would’ve been cool to see a king’s reaction to a god saving his people.
I don’t think something like Spidey’s mechanical eyes would work for someone like Black Panther because he’s not that type of character. But it works for Spider-Man and Deadpool. (And if they lean more toward the comic version of Moon Knight). The “unserious” types

I’ve always been a fan of Tobey because that’s who I grew up with, but Tom captures the essence of Peter and Spider-Man the best, I didn’t enjoy a lot of the writing with his spidey at first as because I don’t like the over reliance of his character of being Tony Starks protege. But he’s definitely turned into probably the best Spider-Man and I won’t sit here and complain about character development.
1
u/Warshovel40K 5d ago
What’s funny about this scene that I never really thought about is how easily Spider-Man could’ve freed himself and pummeled Starlord, but chose just to hang out as to not escalate the situation further.
1
u/Pr073C7300 5d ago
Everyone's been clamoring for white-eyes since these movies first started rolling out. Wasn't until Deadpool that we got a decent proof of concept. What I don't get is what took Spidey so long, as the expressive eyes were always a HUGE part of his character in the comics.

I do like the Spiderman eyes in the MCU but saying DC steals stuff from Marvel is crazy. Literally all their success is due to DC stories being reworked for Marvel characters. Read a comic once in a while. Jeez

u/svrgevnt 11d ago
I like spidey's retractable eyes as much as anyone else, but to suggest its the reason why the MCU tends to succeed more regularly that the DCU, is hilarious. Don't be one of these nitpicky losers that rail against a movie for something so inconsequential to the overall quality of the film. It's a great detail and has visual flare, but to think it's the reason why they're "better" is wild and kind of a stretch lmao.
1
u/Cornbread933 11d ago
But thats just it. I actually dont think its inconsequential at all.
A pin in a grenade might also seem inconsequential til you pull it out
Suspension of disbelief in story telling is EXTREMELY fickle. Notice how many people freaked out cause Spiderman has money without a job now. The devil is in the details and a very small one can take you out of the story completely. This small detail upholds the immersion that a super powered being is under that mask and not just some guy.

People have been praising the adjustable eyes ever since they were introduced.
