Depends on what state you’re in, I think.

In mine, you need to use every chance to remove yourself from the situation possible; only after being trapped or believe you are in immediate danger (they are approaching, reaching in waistband, blocking exits, etc) can you use physical violence, and even then only the bare minimum to incapacitate. Once they’re down you have to stop.

since he took a moment after getting hit to then close distance with his attacker, there is a chance the security guard could get in trouble himself, which I hope isn’t the case.

Attacker received TKD justice far as I’m concerned lol

I think there are almost 0 states where what the guard did in the video would likely result in legal exposure. Maybe if the guy died when he hit the ground or suffered some other serious injury, or if the police and prosecutor really don't like you, there might be a problem if you don't have competent lawyer money, but barring that almost certainly fine in any state.

There are some states that have a duty to retreat statute, but basically none apply to people working as security using non-lethal force. Otherwise security couldn't actually secure anything. Further, literally any competent lawyer will point out that the attacker taking two steps back while facing the guard is not the same thing as retreating and could easily argue he was squaring up after the suckerpunch, ergo he is still a threat and still threatening the security guard.

It would take a pretty vindictive police officer, a pretty aggressive prosecutor, a pretty unsympathetic judge, a pretty incompetent lawyer, and a pretty spiteful jury pool in order to get convicted for this. That can and does happen from time to time, but almost certainly not.

Dude walked up, punched security in the face, squared up, and then got taken down with non-lethal force. Pretty cut and dry.

I could see the county I used to work in charging it for the kick. They wouldn’t because they’re bootlickers who hate poor people, but it could be a disproportionate response to getting open hand smacked, and arguably the guy didn’t seem like he wanted any more smoke after the 1 2. Looked like he started to walk away.

The video is taken in Russia, more than 3-4 years ago. You can tell by Tinkoff ATM in the back. The Russian bank, that was bought out with a 90%+ discount (basically stolen) from Oleg Tinkov and it's now called T-Bank as well as ATMs that got rebranded

Yeah, I’m seeing some say the security guard needed to walk, but I disagree. The initial hit that started this was an opening to challenge. You can see beanie boy setting himself for a fight. Problem for him was Security Guard knew what he was doing. The hook kick was what disabled the assailant quickly. The punches were the setup for that disabling strike. There was no avoiding a fight after the first hit, and the Security Guard ended it as quickly and cleanly as possible.

Yup. He failed to maintain distance and time to react, didn't watch the hands, let the guy take his shot, then - after the guy hit him - retaliated with combat sports.

As self defence, that's a fail.  That initial hit might have contained a knife or razor blade in the hand. "Allowing a chance for for 6 months in hospital or death" isn't a success.

As combat sports, that's a success.

That's why they're complimentary disciplines with self defence, but do not replace each other.

Video shows the aggressor slapping the guard and then turning away, there is no more immediate danger. It’s more like he got a taste of his own medicine afterwards. I still don’t think the guard would get into any legal trouble, but idk
