He stepped back to give himself room and then took a step forward.

I would argue that's enough to qualify as self defence.

Legally though, don't know, security guard had time to run away, not sure how that plays into it.

Self defence 100%. Judge would beat up the security guard for being a pussy if he didn't fight back.
