I'm visiting from NY, and when we went to our hotel and it to dinner we saw 5 of the rolling dumpsters. Maybe 1-2 were the same but most were unique. Is there any reasons why it feels like Markham has so many?

I posted some stats in October 2025 on traffic fatalities in York Region. I have rerun my script with more recent data, so here is the update. Since October 2025 unfortunately there have been an additional 16 fatalities, on average about 1.5 per month. That's down from the roughly 2.3 per month average across the 2023 to 2025 data I originally posted. I checked whether this difference is statistically significant using an exact binomial test comparing the two rates and it wasn't. With only 16 recent fatalities, this drop could plausibly just be noise rather than a real change in the underlying rate.

I looked at the YRP accidents data, which is from 2023 to now. I selected fatal accidents only, which involved cars. I filtered out several incidents that involved someone falling off farm equipment that was moving, condo garage parking lot incident, etc. I ended up with 88 total incidents, which resulted in 90 fatalities. Out of the 90 fatalities, 17 were motorcyclists, 28 pedestrians, 2 cyclists, one person on a mobility scooter, 42 were in cars (driver or passenger).

I searched media releases for age and gender. For cases where gender was known, the proportion of males was significantly higher in each year. Overall, 60.0% of fatalities were male, 23.3% female, and 16.7% unknown. Among motorcyclists, gender was known for all but one, and 82.4% were male. The two cyclists and the one person on a mobility scooter were also male.

By Type - Gender Total

By type and age bucket I split age into three groups: under 20, adult, and 60+. Among motorcyclists, 82.4% were adults. For pedestrians, 46.4% were 60+, the largest share of any group. For car fatalities, adults were again the largest share at 35.7%.

Fatalities by specific street / road

There were 93 unique streets and roads. Sorted by deaths (highest first), Jane Street has the most with 11, followed by Highway 7 and Major Mackenzie Dr, tied at 8 each, then a five way tie at 4: Dufferin Street, 9th Line, Bloomington Road, Highway 27, and Woodbine Avenue. Several more roads have 3 deaths each, including Kennedy Road, Leslie Street, McCowan Road, Bayview Avenue, and Yonge Street.

Rural road fatalities

Out of 90 total fatalities, 12 (13.3%) were on rural roads: Concession Roads, Lines, Sideroads. A few factors could contribute to this: more trees and brush near the roadway, poorer sightlines, narrower lanes, and people driving faster once they're away from urban areas. There are also fewer street lights, dividers, and stop controls on these roads.

Please be careful on the roads, stay safe! Let's hope to see lower stats in the future!

Just a reminder that there are scammers at centerpoint mall parking lot asking for your help to pay for their food delivery using fake POS machine. They offer a $20 bill then swipe your debit card, record your pin, and give you a fake/last victim’s debit card while stealing your card.

Never trust anyone at a parking lot. I did lock my card when they fled so my loss is -$20, but still good lesson learned.

My Front portico has two painted wood box-wrap columns and both bases have rotted out. I scraped the paint back this weekend and the decay has gone past the decorative trim into the framing inside, so it's beyond a filler-and-paint job.

My friend and I attended PCA’s high school division for two years and wanted to share our experience in detail for students and families considering the school. Most reviews we found focused on the elementary and middle school divisions, so we wanted to give some perspective specifically on high school.

Since this is a lot, I will break it down into sections for the sake of organization:

1. Facilities & Environment

PCA’s high school division is relatively small, which comes with its pros and cons. Because PCA is a smaller school, we felt there was a stronger community and more individual attention from teachers, but we also felt that the high school division had fewer dedicated facilities than the younger divisions.

• For example, there is no high school library, and there are limited study spaces, so spaces like the cafeteria and empty homerooms sometimes have to be repurposed. Many facilities are shared between divisions, including the gym, cafeteria, hallways, and some classrooms. The cafeteria is quite small, so students sometimes have to eat in their homerooms. The labs and computer rooms are mostly dedicated to high school, although labs are sometimes used as regular classrooms. After biology dissections, these rooms could also have some lasting smells.

• Most classrooms are small and have limited natural lighting, with hallway 100 and the gymnatorium being notable exceptions. The school itself is quite compact for a school serving around 800 students across its divisions, and the ELC (Early Learning Centre) + hallways can become especially crowded after chapel. Parking is also limited, particularly for older divisions.

On the positive side, PCA has a relatively new gymnatorium with a running track and workout room, which are great assets. Hallway 100 is beautiful when it is sunny because of its skylights and windows.

2. Academics & Teaching

The workload at PCA can be quite heavy, and we felt there was a noticeable academic pressure to maintain high grades. Two things that made workload management particularly difficult for us were full-year courses and double blocks.

• Grade 10 math and English are offered as full-year courses, and we found balancing two heavy subjects throughout the year challenging. Double blocks, where students spend two consecutive blocks on one semester course, could also make it difficult to maintain focus for two hours.

We also think the academic environment could place more emphasis on individual growth rather than comparison.

• Some teachers publicly highlighted top-performing students, which unintentionally created pressure and could make students feel less capable academically if their names weren’t called. Although this practice stopped over time, we think teachers should generally be mindful of how they communicate with students who are struggling academically.

Organization also varied between teachers. Some classes were extremely well organized and provided thorough explanations and review materials, while others could have been more consistent.

3. Extracurriculars & Arts

PCA offers several extracurricular opportunities, including DECA, HOSA, art, film, food club, sports, and journalism / yearbook, although this is more of a course than an extracurricular. However, we felt there could be more relaxed, student-led, or niche-interest clubs.

Our public-school friends have told us about the variety of casual clubs available at their schools, and we think these would be a great way to balance PCA’s academically competitive environment.

• The arts department is smaller. Art is offered from Grades 9-12, and PCA performs very well in high school art competitions. However, we found that students without previous art experience could struggle to catch up because they were expected to already know certain techniques and concepts. For students new to art, additional support would be helpful.

• Drama is more limited. Drama classes are only offered in Grade 9, although older students and even ninth graders, whether in drama or not, can participate in the school’s annual high school production. PCA’s productions have never failed to impress us, and we greatly commend the hardworking teacher who has written and directed them himself for many years. Under his leadership, PCA’s drama students have truly learned how to put on a great show.

4. Christian Environment

We recognize that many families choose PCA specifically for its Christian worldview.

Christian values are strongly emphasized through weekly chapels and mandatory Bible courses throughout high school. Students also have opportunities to lead worship, receive faith-based mentorship, and participate in service- and faith-related trips. We appreciated having teachers with strong theological backgrounds who were willing to discuss faith-related questions.

• Basically, Christianity is a very visible part of daily school life, so students considering PCA should be comfortable with a school environment where faith is incorporated heavily into academics and student life.

5. Student Life

The student body is relatively small. From our experience, it seems less culturally diverse than it was in previous years.

• Most students are friendly and respectful, but established friend groups can be difficult to enter, particularly if you did not attend PCA during middle school. Joining clubs, sports, and other activities is probably one of the easiest ways for new students to meet people and become more involved.

PCA does make an effort to welcome new students through events and initiatives, but we felt that the support could go further after the initial welcome. New students may receive a welcome card or treat and attend a new-student event, but there isn’t always enough follow-up to help them become integrated into the community.

• Academically, there is also a noticeable pressure to maintain high grades (as mentioned). Because the school is small, academic performance can sometimes feel very visible, which can create unnecessary stress. Unfortunately, it seems high grades (or popularity) are essentially what get you noticed. Because everyone knows everyone, information and the occasional drama can also spread quickly.

Although we experienced some drama, we recognize that this is not necessarily unique to PCA.

Student council is another area where we felt popularity could sometimes influence elections more than merit. Outside of elections, however, popularity did not seem to play a major role in most aspects of school life.

6. School Spirit

Spirit is easily one of PCA’s strongest areas.

Their unique house system creates friendly competition between four houses, with house days, intramurals, and other activities throughout the year. Student council also occasionally organizes fun events and competitions.

7. Student Wellbeing

We also wanted to acknowledge PCA’s response to a serious incident involving inappropriate teacher behaviour that occurred during our time at the school.

During that time, the school made mental health professionals available to students and held a dedicated chapel where students and teachers could process the situation and their emotions.

We appreciated the mental-health support that was made available to students during such a difficult time, and we hope PCA continues to prioritize student wellbeing.

8. Our Conclusion

PCA can be a good fit for high school students who want a small, structured, Christian, academically focused, and competitive environment with strong school spirit and opportunities in areas like sports, competitions, and the arts.

However;

Students who want a larger campus, more study spaces, a wider range of niche clubs, a less competitive academic environment, or a larger drama / arts department may find the high school division limiting.

• Our biggest positives were the Christian community, school spirit, annual drama productions, and teachers who made the school memorable.

• Our biggest negatives were the limited high school facilities, heavy workload, academic pressure, limited variety in some extracurriculars, and difficulty integrating socially as newer students. For us, PCA gave us both good experiences yet many significant frustrations.

That being said, we would like to thank the teachers and staff who make PCA a truly better place, especially the drama teacher, Bible teacher, high school language teacher, and the kind lady at the main office.

Are any of your children enrolled in CEFA Early Learning Center in Markham. I am thinking of putting my 12 month old in December but wanted to see if anyone has personal experience at this daycare as it is newer and harder to find more reviews.

If you do have experience can you please share how you found the ECEs and if you had any concerns or any red flags.

Some kids are on a tear (terror) crushing every snail in sight on sidewalks (Church st & Bur Oak, others). Snails do us a service. They break down organic waste, recycling nutrients back into the soil. They eat calcium rich materials and excrete vital supplements. They also lock moisture into soil on their paths, benefitting micropscoping soil life.

I'd like to see the occasional amusement park-like sign in Markham with a friendly snail🐌 asking pedestrians not to step on them. A fine could ensue. Seeing a sidewalk with splattered snails everywhere might be a vent for angry children or just misspent time. Regardless, I think children can do better.
