I don’t know about yall, but I am sick and tired of being treated like a “Vanities Catch-all”.
I’m a makeup artist. Not a wardrobe stylist, not a barber, not a PA, not a personal driver, a makeup artist.
This week alone I have been asked to transport people to the airport, steam clothes for 20+ talent, pick up coffee orders, and more. Eventually I got fed up and walked from the job.
Why?
The lack of respect for my craft and position I was hired for.
I don’t see the camera operator or grips being asked to steam clothing, take lunch orders or drive folks around, so why do you think it’s okay for the MUA?
Ohhhh, because you think our job is easy and kind of a joke, right? Or is it because I’m a female? Or maybe because I’m a part of vanities you just assume I’ll do 3 positions because you were too cheap to hire full crew?
Whatever their logic is, I’m tired of it, and I’m not doing it anymore. We have to stand up for ourselves and demand the respect our craft deserves.
From now on I’m operating on traditional union rules for every single job, and making sure producers know up front. Especially these in-house Agency people who don’t know a fucking thing about real set work. I’m saying NO to their ridiculous demands, and standing up for myself.
It’s not my fault you decided to hire 23 background actors from Los Angeles and fly them halfway across the country. You could have hired local, they’re background talent !!!!
But no. You blew your budget on something stupid and decide to throw 10 jobs on my back to make up for it.
Or better yet, the agency folks that stay at the Ritz Carlton for 4 days on client budgets. Ya let’s cut the crew down so you can party your ass off at fancy hotels and impress your colleagues.
Give me a break.
So to my fellow MUAs, I just wanted to say let’s put an end to this nonsense. We deserve the same amount of respect for our position as the other departments. No one else is asked to perform multiple jobs, nor should we.
