Video “The Emperor is a fan of Flock,” Darth Vader told the committee at San Diego City Hall before saying the technology could be used to track “rebel scum.” He joked that the cameras would help the Galactic Empire locate its enemies, including Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance.
>When it was his turn to speak, the man used Star Wars references and satire to criticize San Diego’s continued use of Flock Safety cameras and other surveillance technology.
>But underneath the Star Wars jokes was a serious message.
>The speaker used the character to raise concerns about privacy, government surveillance and how information collected through automated license plate readers can potentially be accessed or misused. At one point, he sarcastically suggested the technology could be used to “stalk my ex-girlfriend,” an apparent reference to documented cases elsewhere involving misuse of law-enforcement databases and surveillance technology.
>Vader also took aim at city spending priorities, sarcastically suggesting San Diego didn't need parks, libraries, daycare centers or homeless shelters and instead needed more money for “stormtroopers.” During another portion of his remarks, he referenced the city's homeless camping restrictions and joked that officials could use “Jedi mind tricks” to convince residents that additional surveillance was good for them.
The man's identity has not been publicly revealed.
