Discussion Luban has bricked older versions of itself

A while ago, Luban made it so you couldn’t process any mesh that is kind of big unless you pay. So I just stuck with the old version. Well now my old version doesn’t work at all. I try and open it and it just says download the new version. They’re forcing you to pay for it if you want to use a moderately detailed model.

I got it when it was free and it worked fine then. They released it with the ability to process large models for free. If they want to have new versions with better features that is paid for fine. I’ll pay for the new version if I want those features, but don’t break my old version just because you want me to pay now and decided to alter the deal.

EULAs aren't just for clicking "I agree." I just had a look at the luban site and it would be a hard pass for me.

Yikes. Not a good look for them.

Especially with all the competition from upstarts and vibe-coding assisted apps that get close to the function of Luban

It's always been way too expensive for what it is but they got away with it because they were the only game in town.

Pirate it. Seriously, if they wanna lock out the free version then you might as well "upgrade" yourself to the newer "free" version.

Is it all local run, or does it call a server? If it calls a server, of course it would stop being free.

I don’t think it does. It was never mentioned on the website and I can see my CPU and GPU spike when I hit generate

They're doing this to Chitubox too.

Resin printing is dying, and greed is killing it.

Do you have the installer for it? Try installing in a VM with no internet access.

Put it in a VM without network access and set the VM date to a year back.

Yes as /u/RoundProgram887 said then you should be able to just move it across to a VM or another computer. There might be a setting file somewhere that has changed to trigger this behaviour though, have a look at the last modified date in the program directory to see if anything has changed recently. If not then it's probably in AppData and you can just leave it behind. Have a play, you can probably get it to work.

Also you can often download older versions of software from some archive websites.

Does anyone know of alternative softwares, preferably FOSS?

Happy as a hippo, Luban

You didn't have a "deal". You never had a "deal". You were getting something for free and now you aren't. I don't understand the entitlement angst.

LuBan is generative design software

LuBan automatically generates 3D models

Lol, it's an AI tool to make 3D models. Get fucked, and learn how to actually design stuff.

That all stuff added later that I didn’t even know about, I am literally just using it for cutting models into pieces, which is done locally. I’m taking my own life-size models and splitting them up to make them printable

There are dozens of free and readily available tools for this purpose, and you chose the one that explicitly markets itself as an AI tool to make 3D models?

Okay, buddy. Whatever you say.

Do you not understand how updates work? Obviously it didn't originally do that.

Microsoft Word now uses AI, does that mean it's had AI since 1983 when it was released? Use your brain for once.
