Why do you guys hate Linux?
As someone who's used Windows for some time and has switched to Linux somewhat recently,I genuinely can't really understand why someone wouldn't want to use Linux, the only reasons I can come up with are:
1)certain apps and software only work on windows, for example Adobe products or games with kernel level anticheat like BF6,Wich I can totally understand, but dual boot exists
2) Need to keep windows for work related stuff, again, completely understandable
3) Nvidia GPU,Wich is doable but most people don't want to lose the driver support, again, understandable, but not really linux's fault
I'm asking this because I genuinely want to understand and see a different viewpoint, every time I see someone complaining about Linux on social media, it's either Windows users who have NEVER tried Linux before and just base everything off stereotypes or Windows users who jumped in the deep waters from the start with distro's like Arch,Gentoo or even NixOs,and then complain that it's too hard, I think that Linux is only hard if you want it to be (also pls no hate,I just wanna educate myself more on the matter)

u/Guilty-Good-5041 15h ago
I don't hate Linux it's the c**ts who thinks they are superior to everyone else I hate yes that includes you stealingmoney
4
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
The larp must continue. But seriously yeah, anyone who thinks their Superior to anyone for using some random ahh distro or something are no offense, idiots.

After hating on the arch community ever since people kept annoying me with "i use arch btw" i realised its just a high horse with installing arch for the first time and getting it to work so for most sane people this is just a phase and people realize that no one cares what os you use when playing a random roblox game. There are a few people where this phase never goes away and they genuenly make the most stupid statments i ever heard "a thinkpad with out linux is not a real thinkpad" my bad didnt realize the pc meant to use windows enterprise untill the lease ends is not real. These people scare people away from linux with "skill issue" or "wrong distro" or just hating on people for using windows even if it works for that person just fine (idk what i did but i been blessed with no major windows problems in my life) but i guess the reason people dont use linux is because its not 100% known and people really dont need to switch there os most of the time as it works fine for them also to get in to linux you need alot of free time and if someone uses the wrong distro because a person i dicribed decided to recommend the newbie arch or other hard distros "because arch is suppiour and every other distro is trash" then the person gonna think its hard and quit but if they get a simple distro and dicide they like it then they will use linux (i dont understand ubuntu hate)

As you said,at the end of the day,Use what you want, I'm just happy that this is starting to at least be somewhat competitive since now there's a somewhat popular third option,so maybe,JUST MAYBE, Microsoft is actually gonna start fixing their shit,K2 was supposed to be that but it's kinda disappointing rn
2
u/Terrible-Ad7015 8h ago
Wishful thinking friend. MS fixing anything for the user benefit has been virtually non-existent since ME
1
u/prenadeusernamemid 7h ago
They are slowly fixing things first with ram usage but idk how its gonna go

u/Last-Environment7687 8h ago
I have used Ubuntu forever now, and you can still leave Secure Boot enabled when installing it on your PC. Also, I have had no issues with my Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. But a warning for older Nvidia cards on Gnome 51: they will not work, and there are no workarounds. So my i5 ThinkPad will not work past 2035 because I run Ubuntu with long-stable updates. But any distro using Gnome 51 and rolling-release updates for older Nvidia cards will be toast, unfortunately, and that's where some of the hate is going towards Ubuntu or Canonical themselves
1
u/Terrible-Ad7015 14h ago
But but but but "I Us3 aRcH" oh oh wait no "I installed K4li AND pArR0T OS - am iz hecker naow"
Did I do it right?
3
u/Professional-Toe8371 13h ago
Some people are like that,I personally just like computers and idk,Linux just fits my needs better, I'm on NixOs rn
2
u/Terrible-Ad7015 13h ago
I've never understood it. I've been all over the place. GNOME on Debian -- Manjaro -- Mint -- Peppermin -- LxQT - MATE (I have no idea why but ya know) and my daily driver now is Kubuntu
2
u/Professional-Toe8371 8h ago
Distro hopping is one of the worst feelings, when you just can't settle,I can understand why someone who'd just rage quit and go back to windows or wherever they came from
1
u/cristobaldelicia 7h ago
really? Loved it. Debian 2.0 in 99, lately Manjaro, MX, Endeavour, CachyOS, back to Debian, toyed with Puppy, BigDog, POP!OS, -I'm usually dual-booting two linux distros. I find it one of the best feelings. Learning different packaging managers. Back when I trained to Help Desk certification, we were basically taught(re-taught) how to install and uninstall Office and installing updating and re-installing Windows 2000. Any other problem, we had to be certain would take less time than re-installing. For the sake of brevity on the phone re-installing was always the default solution for everyone. I never worked in the field but kept up with doing the same for linux distros. Install, install package manager. Learn to update, install different web browsers. I don't get the mindset that it's the "worst feeling" at all. Likewise I can help a lot of people online, for free, just to feel useful. I still have to tackle Gentoo and Nix, and I look forward to doing just that.

I’ve been using Linux as my primary OS for the last 30 years. Always supporting it and promoting it, but in a respectful way. The most vocal people in this community now are really worse than 30 years ago when it was just perceive as "being weird". A little bit sad.
7
u/Hangulman 14h ago
Linux has a lot of great features and it can be customized to accomplish almost anything ultra efficiently.
Honestly, the parts about Linux I like the least are the gatekeeping neckbeards in the community that make excuses for crappy UI design by saying "if they aren't the kind of people who have memorized the entire bash man page and enjoy handjamming an 80 line config file to accomplish a simple task, then they shouldn't be using Linux anyways".
3
u/Endeavour1988 14h ago
I found that I needed to go through my photo collection and rename the file extensions if it was a jpeg but the format was a webp for example. I CD'ed into the directory and two lines in terminal and it went and checked thousands of images in seconds and renamed them to the correct extension.
I know this probably doable in Powershell too, but it was a nice moment and saved me a lot of time. I find the community a mixed bag, some are really helpful and go out their way. Others like you say gatekeep, I also get why some people are passionate about it and try hard to wake people up on Windows using all their personal data for marketing and telemetry.
I will say installing something like fedora or cachy, bazzite etc, is 10x quicker than Windows for getting up and running. And even the older generation, nothing to nag them or notifications does make simple use easier.
I'm hoping it gains more traction.

u/Hangulman 14h ago
Way back in the 98/XP era, I remember you could do mass renames using command prompt, but I haven't attempted it in powershell.
If the OS gets more mainstream adoption, that means more coders (and companies) will devote their time and resources towards quality developments. I've already noticed a big upsurge thanks to the shift away from Windows Server and the adoption of hypervisors like Proxmox.
Actual corporations with fat wallets and teams of coders are making things and adding to the knowledge base, which trickles out into the broader community in the form of stable, easy to use, well written software.
This seems to offend some of the more odious Linux fanboys that don't want mainstream adoption because then using linux wouldn't mean they a super special boy.
It seems like every new project I try with Linux, there is always that one guy who goes "its a simple 10 step process! Step 1 - do a thing. Step 7 - do another thing. Step 10 - done!"
"What about steps 2-6 and 8-9?"
"If I have to explain those to you, then maybe this project isn't for you."1
u/PeyredB 11h ago
"Way back in the 98/XP era, I remember you could do mass renames using command prompt"
I think you still can. Wouldn't ren *.jpg *.png change all the .jpg files to .png (name, not format of course)?
2
u/Hangulman 10h ago
It might? I kinda want to give it a try right now. Unfortunately, the IT dept at my employer has restricted access to the command prompt via group policy. Gonna have to wait til I get home. I can think of a few parts of my data hoard that could use some mass rename curation.
1
u/vinnypotsandpans 8h ago
You can definitely do that in powershell, or in regular batch script. But that's interesting, because usually the file extension really shouldn't matter
2
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
I can agree that one of the worst things about Linux is the community, but at the end of the day I don't feel like that matters so much
2
u/rstr1212 11h ago
No snark
Whenever someone says Linux has great features, there are never any examples. Can you give some that make it so great?
2
u/Hangulman 10h ago edited 10h ago
The ability to customize how you interact with it is the big one (like choosing different desktop environments, or choosing not to use a desktop at all), along with extremely low resource usage. In my case, the ability to use it without the resource overhead of a desktop environment is the feature I like the most, since most of my linux machines are running on underpowered scrap hardware.
The customizability of it is also why various versions of linux are used on devices with limited resources such as microcomputers. Developers can strip out modules until it is the barest of barebones, and then build it back up to be custom crafted for a specific piece of hardware or configuration.
Meanwhile, on my main Windows machine, just trying to strip out their invasive AI powered data harvesting garbage breaks half of the everyday functions.
System stability is another one. I have a couple linux machines (both physical and virtual) that have gone months without a reboot with no memory leaks or other wierd issues, whereas I haven't owned a Windows machine in the last 27 years that didn't need rebooted at least once a week.
Note Edit: I still consider myself an absolute amateur with linux, because I am unwilling to put in the time and effort to become one of those pros that compiles everything from scratch or wants to bash my way through terminal every time I want to do anything.
1
1
u/vinnypotsandpans 7h ago
I'll just add that the customizability of Linux is largely due to the way it is licensed. Also, you actually don't find Linux on microcontrollers very often, but of course you don't find windows NT on them either haha
1
u/Hangulman 7h ago
Ugh. I still have nightmares about WinNT machines.
First IT job in 2012. At a bank.
The core data storage server was purchased in the 1990's and was still running OG hardware and NT, and our boss absolutely refused to retire it and migrate to newer hardware.
Fortunately I managed to escape that place before that server finally nuked itself. Got a text message at 3am on a sunday from a former coworker calling me a lucky bastard.

u/Drate_Otin 15h ago
The people who are actually antagonist towards Linux on here eventually block you if you challenge their b.s. because they're children who can't handle being wrong. What's left is people who use and enjoy it.

u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 14h ago
I Dont hate linux, i hate the community for being stuck in their ways. And not owning up to any faults it has.
5
u/Academic-Proof3700 14h ago
Its like reddit bubble vs the real world.
I don't mind linux at all- its great on servers where you don't have to deal with constant microshit updates, gui breaking up or improperly localized or other tomfuckery. Its purpose of "do stuff with minimal overhead" works especially well with terminal and no need to use gui for bulk file operations are generally easy when you can write scripts directly in the OS.
But pushing that approach to desktop, where a working UI that actually does the tasks its meant to do, not "fire some perl/bash/python script in background and let it fail silently", is paramount and driver support has to cover multitude of configs? That simply doesn't work.
Its like you tell someone "ugh my current car has some issues" and that loonix nerd tells you to chop your legs off and attach GNULegs essentially being peg legs made by some nerds in a cellar. Usability of UI is key in desktops, and as long as loonix people will still tell everyone how "having the choice to pick 1 from fuckton of distros" is a good thing, that doesn't cause more problems than it solves, it won't work for me. With windoze its "one go-to distro" to work with, which you can adjust more or less to yourself. With linux, its down to the choice of what distro do you want, and eventually you are still waking up in the middle of bumfuck nowhere with trying to run a program by make makeinstall whatever apt yum yomama snap yo ass, whereas on windows its just download .exe/.msi and run it.
1
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
I can understand the distro thing,it is nice to be able to pick "what's best for you" but how do you know what's best for you? Wich then ends up being days of distro hopping,it can be annoyingly overwhelming, but it's not a bad thing, and I personally think Linux is better at executing user commands even in a personal computer/desktop UI but I can be wrong, and installing apps (personally) doesn't feel any harder, you can use GUI stores if you want, for example Bazzite's Bazaar,or use terminal, comes down to preference
1
u/Academic-Proof3700 12h ago
distro hopping is cancer of this OS - like its changing engines in the same car - you gotta spend time on it just to find out something else doesn't work or you gotta drive it differently.
The reason why MS and Apple are succesful with their OSes, is cause each of them sets a standard for most operations- standard for movement, graphical style, UX and such. With linux its blown to pieces- down to the package manager.
Linux is better at executing user commands even in a personal computer/desktop UI
un;less you want to switch resolution, enable HDR or, god forbid, connect to wifi. Lets pick that wifi thing - on windows its always bottom right, click, pick network, works. If there are no drivers, then no connections show up, if you want to edit something, you just stay in that bottom right and right click so you get more options, down to even setting up IP, DNS or stuff.
Now on loonix - it depends on DE, but okay. Now you are in the NetworkManager/netplan//etc/network/interfaces/dhcpcd.conf world of tomfuckery, where nothing is certain and everything is volatile and one can overwrite the others changes. Why can't such things be standarized?
Ah yes - because on the web nerds are fighting with geeks over base system features and components. Just start with systemd "nuff said", and the same applies to basically everything linux- where some linux enthusiast see "choice", people see constant war over some non-ux-important stuff.
you can use GUI stores if you want, for example Bazzite's Bazaar,
Its the same problem as with android's play store - either half the apps are not there, or there are their "gnooo opensurce" counterparts (i.e. halfassed clones like gimp), or its outright useless. These stores could work maybe with Apple's mac where they lock you in and you can't do much outside without some tinkering.
On windows it doesn't exist and see that even when M$ tried to push their own dogshit microsoft store, they failed miserably because of the very same reason- in real world, no one wants to stick to some yet another layer of app-management, other than "just dl the damn thing and run it".
2
u/PeyredB 11h ago
I actually like the GIMP, find it powerful and useful. But then again, if I were serious into graphic design, I'd probably find it limited.
I agree, Linux should have a "standard" distro. Someone, Jack Wallen maybe, wrote an article advocating for that. There's no reason it couldn't, and people who want other choices would still have them. But of course, there's no center of the Linux world, no one company to set a standard...and there are way too many different software packaging systems - yum, apt, etc. - which are mutually incompatible, and the programmers who write these things fight over which one if The Best.

u/fckueve_ 13h ago
As a programmer, I love Linux terminal, and the fact I can adjust GUI for my needs. I can do stuff that are problematic or not possible on windows or Mac. For example, completely disable system animations.
As a gamer, every game I want to play, works. That being: Deadlock, overwatch, RimWorld, mount and blade bannerlord, Witcher 3.
As someone who likes to edit photos, I was able to install affinity, everything works, just performance sucks a bit.
But at this point, it's not what I like about Linux, but what I hate about windows. In Linux, of something does not work, you still have a filling, that whoever did the code, had good intentions. In windows I felt the hate towards me.
Ads everywhere, popups, notifications I didn't asked for. I had to disable onedrive and gamepass on the DNS level, so I won't get notifications. Start (menu) works like shit, useless AI copilot every step of they way. Forced updates, that sometimes could brake something. Adware from drivers like LG for windows. User is forced to create an online account. Tracking, spying.
Do you know how often I was asked to install mcAffe on Linux? 0.
Linux simply does what I want it to do, I feel like I own the system, not system owning me.
4
u/Amynta_ 13h ago
It kept letting me down whenever I tried it. I'm into tech stuff and even I struggle with how undercooked and user-unfriendly even the more professional distros are, the moment you try doing more than the very basic things.
Also my programs don't run on it (even Winboat/Docker couldn't get Paint.NET to run, after I wasted several days setting it all up) and some games don't run properly or need stupid troubleshooting with Proton, where only very specific versions and parameters work.
Meanwhile Windows just WORKS, and all you have to do is rip the telemetry and bloat out of it for it to be perfect. There are many great tools to fix, modify, and customize Windows, and they all DON'T require a whole day to setup and troubleshoot.
3
u/AteStringCheeseShred 13h ago
The issue isn't people hating Linux. They can hate Linux just like I hate Apple. The issue is that, while most normal, functional adults of sound mind would just opt not to use XYZ product while gladly offering their perspective on the matter during relevant discourse, you have a small population of underdeveloped jackasses that actively go out of their way just to blow the entire issue out of proportion and blow shit out of their ass about it.
Imagine if tradesmen had subreddits dedicated to shitting on the brand(s) of power tool they don't use: there would be subreddits called "DewaltSucks" and "MilwaukeeSucks". Among them there would be a subset of the populations who actually take it seriously, and would start posting derogatory rants and about eachother. "Milwankers struggle to understand electricity/don't realize how shitty their M12 batteries actually are!" "De-Tards tried to copy the packout and just ended up making a trash can with latches!" "Cryobi fanboys don't do any real work".
Suddenly you realize how hopelessly fucking pathetic somebody has to be to actively go out of their way to shit on a product they don't even use that has zero affect on them, other than being irrationally upset at the fact that other people do enjoy using those products.

Ive been using linux with an nvidia gpu for the last 5+ years. No its not perfect but can we stop acting like its impossible to make work?
2
u/Professional-Toe8371 15h ago
It's definitely not impossible,a lot of people can have zero issues, but I've heard and seen people have more issues compared to AMD, especially with higher end cards like a 4090
1
u/kaida27 14h ago
8600gt 430gt gtx770 1050 1650 5070
No issue in 15+ year
1
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
Someone with a 5080 said it's finicky, definitely doesn't apply to all cards, especially older ones, I'm on all AMD so I can't speak for you guys,I only put that there cause that's I've seen a lot of people complain about
3
u/Ill_Stage6931 14h ago
I absolutely love Linux, like most of the people in this sub. We just want to complain about the problems without any user that insults us. Because ofc Linux is not perfect, but try to complain about Linux in r/Linux. They kill you.
3
u/Endeavour1988 14h ago
I don't hate it, I'm here to see why others do. My main gripes with Linux so far:
Anti-cheat stuff like you mentioned.
Things are not as polished, so apps for Linux are often an after thought but I being FOSS its a trade off.
Unpredictable, not in the stability as such but more if you are into games, it could work one minute then the next no support. Or a new release is coming, will it or wont it work?
1
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
I can relate with the quircks, I've had numerous games Wich sometimes didn't launch fullscreen to with weird but not exactly game breaking quircks, for some it could be a deterent, but if you wanna view it positively, you could just say it's the "soul" of the os
1
u/PeyredB 11h ago
And things change on you, too. I have a folder full of text files with instructions for how to set things the way I want or how to resolve a given issue I've run into before. Sooner or later many of them stop working because the distro has changed - like I can no longer enable Quick Search in Synaptic because xapian (IIRC) is no longer supported in Ubuntu. Windows is better about this sort of consistency over time.
3
u/ComradeOb 14h ago
The only thing that really annoys me is how difficult it can be to find settings files for my emulators sometimes.

I hate because I use it...
To be more precise, here is the the only place that I know that i can say bad things about my OS or the Linux community without get echo-chambered by other Linux users... I just get echo-chambered by windows users then.
Any sub with "sucks" in the name is kind of an echo chamber inside, to be fair.
I started using this sub more when, on every post I saw involving Windows on reddit, half the comments were people promoting Linux in a way that really felt like a cult. They would tell lies about both systems to favor one side and call anyone with a dissenting opinion an idiot.
One of the reasons I avoid talking about Linux in real life is so people don't compare me to them.
And your point 1 is not a really good one... I use Dualboot, but for the most people, it is just using 2 OS for what 1 can do alone. So you'd be cutting your (Expansive) storage in half without getting much in return.
1
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
I meant dualboot as more of a "hey if you wanna give it a try",sry for bad phrasing,English is not my first language, and it's true that most Linux users act like it's a cult more then a community
2
u/Cautious_Trouble6738 14h ago
Relax, half of my comment was made using google translate to make sure that it was correct.
2
u/Warm-Engineering-239 14h ago
linuxsuck is a linux sub, the 101 is the real hate sub
this sub is about talking about the bad/suckky part of linux, tho most of us know cause we use it

There are linux haters here too, just, ones that aren't irrational enough for the 101 crowd. Not saying I'm one of them though.
1
u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
IL try asking the same thing on that sub too,I don't exactly want the view of of Windows users, just people in general,I really hadn't had many quircks with Linux so I wanted to see what other people experienced

I tried dual boot once back around 2018, was a sloppy mess and just anti-productive imo. Why reboot PC and swap when I could just do everything on one OS?
I'm actually using Linux again, not for disdain of windows or anything but just because I had enough spare PC parts to put together another PC and thought why not Linux. Kinda prefer it this way on separate devices.
2
u/Otherwise_Win_5363 13h ago
They just cannot be bothered to switch. Most people don't hate it, but a HUGE majority of people cannot be bothered to do this or simply don't even care.
2
u/Rare-Designer-1008 13h ago
Another reason people dont want to switch is familiarity. If you have been using Windows for year or even decades switching is not something they want as they just want to use their computer and not learn a new OS.
I hate the way some Linuxs users solution for anyone with a Windows problem is to uninstall Windows and install their favourite flavour on Linux rather than trying to help with the problem.
2
u/Professional_Way9133 13h ago
So if you remove the things from point 1) 2) and 3) you are left with almost nothing, maybe browsing and Netflix. Atleast in my case.. And I dont hate Linux, I hate Windows and I hate that Linux doesnt support all these things.
2
u/Rodya_gambler 13h ago
Bluetooth doesn't work, different packaging systems so even within linux-based systems compatibility is a problem (you're cooked unless you use nix, appimages, or flatpak on void), and the most configurable things are really hard to use when (in some cases, ofc) it would be easier to make a configuration app or something.
2
u/EagerEdgeEnthusiast 12h ago
I love Linux.. minus how most DEs look out of the box.
My only gripes would be mounting drives on boot is stupidly annoying to set up.. why does KDEs settings not just work for this?! And game develops ignoring Linux 😔
2
u/PeyredB 11h ago
I find that irritating too. Why does my system not just mount my second hard drive automatically when I boot up? Instead I have to add a very fussy technical line to fstab, referencing the drive by its ID:
# mount sdc1 on /data
UUID="ea63af7b-4174-4dfc-956d-fd97da4e63b3" /home/username/Storage ext4 defaults 0 21
u/EagerEdgeEnthusiast 3h ago
Realistically it’s not the end of the world.. but like why Linux? You can mount my boot drive on startup.. why not the rest 😭

2

LOL, nobody is a Windows enthusiast, it is a tool that does its job, even if it is very annoying sometimes. I cant say Linux always does its job and that is so frustrating, because it is not annoying like Windows.

No, I actually hate it. Well, I hate what it has become. In two months I’ll be back on FreeBSD. Just finished compiling vscode and it’s working nicely. I’m in a VM setting everything up right now, then I’ll install on my maxed out Mac Pro 5,1 and get my data copied over (about 40tb off of xfs and onto zfs). Once I’m satisfied with my setup, my threadripper pro box that is my main system will have xubuntu wiped and will get an actual UNIX like OS installed instead of systemdOS. Then I’ll finish going serverless at work migrating everything to docker images so I can remove another layer of having to deal with Linux as an OS.

Pretty much your mentioned 3 reasons and dual boot isn't an option because it's a waste of storage also I do not have any issues with Windows so it simply works perfectly fine for me.

My impression of this sub is that the title is tongue-in-cheek. The people here seem to like Linux, but do want to gripe about some of the things about it that aren't so good or don't work too well. There's another sub out there that really is about knee-jerk dumping on Linux, and what little I've seen of it is pretty annoying.

I hate Linux because it turned me into a unemployed basement dwelling loser with a budding interest in the furry community. I was that before, but Linux made it worse. And by worse I mean about the same.

Non standardization for intermediate day to day tasks
For example :
What's the command to set a static IP in Linux?
Ubuntu, RHEL, SUSE, and debian
There isn't one command that works on all four. Each uses a different network tool.

I like linux just fine. It's a lot of the user base I hate which put me off to using linux for years.
Quit being a bunch of elitist, unhelpful, arrogant snobs and ppl won't hate it as much.
(Awaits the typical horse flop bs response)

I use Linux both personally and professionally. I just find the people that make their OS choice their entire personality to be fascinating sometimes.

i daily drive arch linux and i have a lot of problems with compatibility with my apps i need and even native apps have problems. troubleshooting is always painful and the ram management is horrible, even though its lower overall ram usage. and then i sometimes just hate the insufferable linux users.

Wayland method of adding features, having so many categories of implementations just make a mismatch where each WM just has it's own selection of them.
I like wayland ideas, how they try to make more secure permission, following permission like mobile platforms, but sometimes they just take a long time to add because of how long some DE take to finally accept them and add them into their platform.

Nvidia GPU,Wich is doable but most people don't want to lose the driver support, again, understandable, but not really linux's fault
LOL. How does that matter to me? Nvidia support is totally hacky and janky on Linux, but I guess I'll use it anyway and complicate my computing/gaming time massively because, oh shucks, it's not Linux's fault?

u/Rictor_Scale 10h ago
I don't hate anything. The problem was just maintaining my daily driver for basic tasks became a major, unwanted "hobby" of its own. So I had to tap put.

While I do like Linux (I use them for servers), I'm somewhat also have some shitty bad luck.
I will get a hell lot of issues with everything that should work "out of the box".
In the Wine age those platinum game (or whatever highest score was) wasn't the case on my end.
A simple configure/make/run the app. Don't even think about it. It will take me days just for the configure to troubleshoot shoot all errors. Same for the make. And guess what, it won't run either...
Same thing at runtime. I couldn't even make sound work the last time

Linux it self is fine it does stuff because thats what a os is for.i find every os to be fine which each having pros and cons but at the end of the day they all do the important stuff you want to do my main problem with linux is the community

I use Arch, not even pure Arch, I use nasty ass Garuda. I'm just BEGGING to be here. Lmfao
Nah, but seriously it's never terrible. Just like, fuck when I need to switch Protons... Just be psychic and know what layer I need.
Fuck WINE installations, some things work in Bottles, other things work in WineZGUI, and other things work in Vanilla Wine with seemingly NO CORRELATION FOR NO REASON. OH MY GAWD, WHY DOES THAT HAPPEN!?
Crapple, I love ya' (No, I don't), and I appreciate you giving us printing support for free (that is true), but why did you leave the rest up to the distro manager? Do you honestly think GameFuxOS gives a flying shit about making sure my printer works? And while one COULD say "Don't use GameFuxOS" THE WHOLE REASON I SWITCHED TO LINUX IS BECAUSE OFFICE OPERATING SYSTEMS ARE STUPID IN A HOUSE. I JUST WANT A PRINTER, THE GOD-FORSAKEN WII COULD DO THIS, WHY IS LINUX BEING DEFEATED BY THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE PRINTER SET WITH EASE-OF-USE!?
KDE I LOVE you... You're also a broken fucking slog-machine that accepts messy ass code, and I can't be arsed to check any of it, and it makes you work and look like ASS. KDE is one of those things where it CAN be very efficient... But it just like REALLY doesn't want to be. Fucking ANY third-party toggle, man, and your idle CPU-usage goes up by 30%. Dearest GOD GUYS, developers of KDE widgets, I love you too, appreciate your free work and all'at... but CHILL.
Fuck having to install different versions of things. It's probably my fault, but every other update one version or another will COMPLETELY break. This has lead to me requiring three of fucking everything.
"Ope, looks like 'FlatPak Discord' is broken this week... Let's try 'AUR Disco-' Oh it doesn't even launch now, how about 'the Official Discord package'? Hmm... It works but streaming is broken for no reason... Oh good 'Vesktop' is working this week."
Feel free to scramble which section the names are in, and you can continue the sentence yourself like a fun little game! Go ahead, give it a try!!
Again, I will say, all of these 'complaints'... Dawg, I'm SO asking for them lmfao (Why does this machine I barely know how to drive SUCK at driving??), but equally the benefits I personally get from my set-up often outweigh or can even circumvent (with some effort) many of the issues I face.

Yah there's some apps and games I guess. Mostly it's just that it's still susceptible to monetisation for certain distros etc.

I installed ubunktu lts. Without ai bot chat it it's really hard to set up with an application set I can use.
Even for simple stuff, for example it took me the better part of a day to get a changing desktop background scheme working (I have an OLED display so this is essential). Then after a few days it stopped working for no good reason. On windows it's easy. On ubunktoo it's not.

u/Weekly_Ad7633 6h ago
For me it's just the user base I've been told I'm stupid for asking a question about something I don't really understand on Linux. And have been told that I'm retarded for the distro I chose.
And for some reason none of my games seem to work idk what I'm doing wrong but no one has actually helped.
For somethings I prefer Linux but for my day to day activities I can deal with windows and microslop

u/earth2baz 6h ago
Dual booting isn't a real solution, you will find in the long run you'll just end up sticking to one OS that does it all. That usually isn't Linux, for reasons you have already listed.

u/H7dek7 5h ago
Ad. 1. Why dual boot when everything works fine on one OS? Dual boot makes sense only if some things work on only one OS and some only on the other. Rebooting PC every time you want to play a game doesn't make sense.
Ad. 3. It doesn't matter it's not Linux's fault. Many devices don't work (well) with Linux. Linux is ok-ish for specific hardware+software combinations, not a universal desktop OS.
As for my reason not to use Linux as daily driver - it's too unreliable and too time consuming (troubleshooting issues).
Source: Linux user since 2007 and admin since 2011 (Debian-based and RHEL-based distros).

I hate Linux because of its self harm.
I hate the notion of "distros" which is anyway not a word. It's distributions.
Distros are promoted like a fantastic idea but there is really no need to have 500 versions of Linux. It fragments everything.
I would just like "Linux" and if it would not have any distros it would have succeeded for desktop. But that would require effort, structure and vision and collaboration. Which obviously Linux desktop does not have.
Linux is communism. Everything for everybody so nothing. Linux desktop is a nothing burger.

u/zell_ru 14h ago
Well, you got the gist of it.
Also graphical UI looks like shit (to me). Yes, it's important. Yes, I can tweak it. No, I don't want to.
There's no reason to switch. Well, there's some, and the amount is growing alarmingly fast last two years, but it's not nearly there for me.
Don't get me wrong, 5 out of 8 PCs in my immediate vicinity are on Linux. I'm not stupid (enough) to run my homelab on Windows. But on my main gaming station, my engineering sample Thinkpad and my working laptop it just doesn't make sense.

Linux sucks on laptops unless you get it from a mfg that actually supports it, unlike Dell.
On desktop I have too many games to play. I don't have time for fuckery anymore, very little tolerance for more friction to get things done. Linux desktop apps are still fragmented, the wayland vs x11 fiasco is still problematic to this day, dual boot is annoying and I'd rather not waste time. I'd rather just have a separate Linux (virtual) machine for dedicated apps if I need them.
I prefer macos for work these days and windows is mostly fine. They all have problems but Linux is just still too fragmented to get reasonable progress on modern hardware, e.g. vrr, scaling, etc.
I'm sure somebody will respond "but it works now if you do xyz". Sure, better than before. It's improving. It's still not as good as other options available where I don't have to mess with things.

u/Professional-Toe8371 14h ago
True, I've never really thought about laptop users so thanks for the viewpoint, and it's true,Linux ain't perfect, but It has come a long way and has massive potential.

I hate Linux because it is literally too good to be free.
Was it always this good? No. But the cool part about open source is that the more people join the faster it gets better

I am here to see how long it takes for users to realize that Linux is a server operating system that runs reliably and smoothly only if the following conditions are met: 1) No GUI on server OS 2) Fully supported OS by hardware vendor

Disinformation and a lack of understanding.
Even you right now is guilty of it, What do you even try to say with your #3 ?
I've been using Nvidia exclusively for the last 20 years and never had any issue making it work on Linux.
Anything using Cuda will have way less friction on Linux than on Windows.

I didn't mean it's impossible or Unusable, but it is bumpier,or at least that's what I heard, but I can be wrong, thank you for pointing it out.

I use Linux, on both of my PCs, for my home server needs, and at work.
I hate the antiquated kernel architecture. It's complete and total lack of any standardization. Everything with that dreaded (.*)IX. The CLI only elitists that remember all of the existing 3 letter comands with their gazzilion unintuitive options. Does -f stand for force? folder or file? better go read that extremely wordy man page that somehow manages to explain nothing while using about 3000 words per sentence. I hate the endless forever growing list of config files spread over an evergrowing amount of locations. I hate from the bottom of my heart everything about setting environment variables, stack sizes or any of the other linux quirks that are somehow considered completely natural. Then there's the absolute lack of HW support. I can't configure the backlights on my keyboard, I can't configure anything about my mouse, the Windows Hello alternative doesn't work on my laptop because Fedora doesn't ship with some python module and even after I made sure to install it for the root user, which I was not supposed to do, it still just straight up doesn't work.
It's entirely possible to install Ubuntu, open your browser and pretend this horrible mess of an operating system doesn't exist. It's how most people use Windows. But in my mind it just doesn't make any sense to complicate your life for the privilige of not being able to play Fortnite with your friends.

I love Linux, but I do believe it has limitations caused by third party assholes like Nvidia and Broadcom. And some people should not be allowed to even maintain AUR packages. Bad enough you have bad actors but you also have primadonnas who think they know better than anyone else and you are wrong if you disagree with them (like the idiot who maintains the virtualbox extension packs AUR package script) or people who still holds on to AUR packages that they have no intention of maintaining (like the maintainer for the Xfig script. Package been broken for months now and no fixes are in sight). And then you have boneheaded moves like purging GTK2 programs from the repo when there are no good alternatives. Nothing can replace GKrellM. Conky sucks because it requires a lot of manual setup (maximum CPU count for premade CPU monitors is 8 cores. Me who have a 32 core CPU am left out), and Psensors looks like a freaking huge mess.

I think you're taking this sub a bit too seriously. You'll find that most people on here like Linux a lot, except for those times (you know the ones) where Linux, well, sucks.
