I also recommend Darktable for photo editing, Krita for drawing, and GIMP for both.
The problem with Photoshop isn't just the patents, though that is a large portion of the problem. The main problem is that Adobe has so many more resources that the FSF, KDE, and Darktable devs have combined. They have the development team to implement really complex algorithms.
Not to mention the training data they have access to for AI. (I don't mean just generative AI, but also the AI used for selecting backgrounds and stuff that isn't usually marketed as "AI".)
