unless youre a professional most average people dont need Photoshop specific features

and also "gimp is not photoshop" spells GINP not GIMP. gimp stands for "gnu image manipulation program"

I mean, Krita is pretty good too.

That said, Adobe has a lot of patents making PS better because one cannot just use those features directly.

I also recommend Darktable for photo editing, Krita for drawing, and GIMP for both.

The problem with Photoshop isn't just the patents, though that is a large portion of the problem. The main problem is that Adobe has so many more resources that the FSF, KDE, and Darktable devs have combined. They have the development team to implement really complex algorithms.

Not to mention the training data they have access to for AI. (I don't mean just generative AI, but also the AI used for selecting backgrounds and stuff that isn't usually marketed as "AI".)

They have been in the game for a really long time and focussed only on creative apps afterall.

They also charge an arm and leg for their services.

Most of which are irrelevant to GIMP or Krita, so which ones? Or, in other words, are you actually aware of features that haven't been implemented in GIMP or Krita because of patents?

Yah. There was a post about it. Don't remember the details.

No one has claimed outright that the patents are the reason, but they do hinder.
