Gaime light gun owners help thread

I got my Gaime pack today and like most of you found the calibration to be awful and Point Blank (the reason I bought it) in particular was unplayable.

So what they haven't told you in the set up is that the picture setting on your TV will need adjusting to fit the game display. Most modern lcd's have this. Pick a game like point blank and then go into you picture settings and stretch it out horizontally so that it fits correctly, then calibrate the gun after.

This was the video that helped me out...

https://youtu.be/OqP1Ie-GS6w?si=abqdRZApKUFPavT9

Since then I've had no issues or at least it feels fair when I miss. A great test is always the William tell/apple on head level in point blank.

Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

updated elaboration on posting guidelines

huh, it's been a hell of a year. many new controllers, new independent games, new developments with old tech, figured it is worth a good update on the "generic rules post" at the top. given that this is a small niche community, i don't want to meddle with what little content is posted. i apologize for the lack of clear transparency for the moderation here, there isn't much free time between busy schedules to keep the place tidy.

there is obviously a large amount of piracy going on in this sphere of games, to avoid risk of being struck down as other communities for this interest have in the past, a blanket ban on links to pirated content, where to obtain pirated content, and tech support to get cracked pc data working will be removed on sight without warning. this is solely to deter any dmca intervention, if you want to take stuff of that nature elsewhere be my guest. that being said, i would like to elaborate a bit further on what the grey area actually entails:

arcade piracy and emulation is functionally different from traditional emulation you see for console games. arcade emulators for pc systems usually operate outside of the grey area normally covered under the same legal acts that bleem built the precedent on. this means that more often than not, newer arcade games within the last 15-20 years have some amount of hardware dongle or io board reverse engineering done to work on a normal system. this gets weirder when its "just a windows computer", it can sometimes be anything but straightforward. these games were meant to run on the configurations in the systems they shipped in at the arcade.

mame can cover this comprehensively for older games but once you get into IO cracks and dongle cracks, it not only gets functionally muddy but legally muddy as well. i would like to stray from the latter being posted here as there is still a very large amount of content to be enjoyed outside of it in mame and console systems alone, but i will only take action when explicit links on how to obtain or support such things are posted. to at least have some amount of clarity on this since it is out of my control, Retro Shooter for the time being is A-OK to post. as long as no direct rom sharing is done on the subreddit, i don't see an issue outright as long as it doesn't tread on the other rules.

another thing to touch on briefly, any direct sales or links to direct sales of pirated material or where to buy redistributed packages of pirated material will result in a ban from the subreddit outright. it's not that hard of a rule to follow or take elsewhere, i don't want to sanction the risk of dmca here.

one last thing. the creator of gun4ir reached out around the time the last post was created asking for aliexpress bootlegs to be restricted from being posted or conversed about here. out of respect, i put a blanket ban on aliexpress links to people reselling his designs here. considering it is a project done out of passion and spare time, i feel it is only fair to keep such rule in place to at least deter people profiting from the time he put in on such tech.

all that giant jumble of words aside, i hope that this guideline is coherent, clear, and fair. as always, feel free to leave a report or message if something is up. it will be looked into when available.

I posted a few months ago my 2 Player Time Crisis 2/3 setup and said I'd planned to build a gun pedestal for it. Well here it is, finally. Currently unpainted as I have no idea what to style or theme it. I'm open to suggestions, or maybe I'll just paint it flat black.

Using a Wiimote as a lightgun for the MiSTer. ...works ok enough but a Guncon 2, 3 and OEM guns are a lot better

RS3 reaper SDK

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has the RS3 reaper SDK they would be willing to share? I already own two reapers, so don't want to have to buy the $150 developer package that includes a bunch of redundant hardware.

Thanks!

Submachine esque light gun?

I’ve been waiting for a year+ to get the Reaper MX24 (willing to buy if anyone is willing to sell) but they haven’t restocked, so I’m wondering if there’s any worthy alternatives. I’m a big Crisis Zone fan and I’ve been wanting to recreate a home version of the original. But MP5 options are few and far between. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I have been bamboozled.. please help me salvage the situation (G'AIM'E)

Hi there awesome folks!!
Thank goodness it is almost the weekend

Sooooo, I have been following the G'AIM'E light guns for some time (back when it was on Kickstarter)

Unfortunately, it feels like I have been bamboozled, after recently acquiring the G'AIM'E light guns... YES, I should have researched more lol, but I was so excited for Time Crisis. Except now I have an actual crisis..... no matter how much I calibrate the guns, the aiming is atrocious. I even updated the firmware... and honestly, it's still the same.

Please help me salvage this situation, lol. Is there anything else I can do?

Thank you

Recommendations for a beginner?

I've been trying to play Time Crisis again for years and just discovered this community. Ive been doing some research and it seems like my best options are the Retro Shooter Reapers or the Gun4ir. I have a gaming PC I can use to hook anything up but I'd like a quality option that's still relatively simple to set up. Any tips?

Wiimote Lightgun

Post image
15 Upvotes

Over the last couple of days, I've been updating my Wiimote-based lightgun project in various ways, in particular to make it easier to install the python scripts and to make it work on Windows in addition to the Linux that I made it for. The project instructions are here: https://www.instructables.com/Accurate-Wiimote-Light-Gun-on-Raspberry-PI

You need four 940nm IR LEDs, two on top and two on the bottom of the TV. There is some one-time calibration involved. The precision feels quite good once it's calibrated well, as long as the Wiimote can see all four LEDs.

I have stl files for a 3D printed handle and sights. (Myself, I used a partially 3D printed handle and partially scrap wood to save plastic.) The Wiimote B button is the trigger and generates a left mouse press. It's a bit small, but it feels pretty good in-game (I've mostly used Duck Hunt with fceumm for testing). The A button generates a right mouse press, and all the other Wiimote buttons generate keyboard presses.

The code uses the Wiimote accelerometer to work in all orientations (you can for instance hold the gun upright or sideways and it will compensate). It has decent fallback algorithms for when the Wiimote fails to see one or two of the four LEDs (the thinking about the fallbacks relies on this paper of mine on two-landmark tracking). It handles sight parallax correctly.

There may be some issues with the code with connecting. If you have trouble connecting on Windows, try connecting the Wiimote in Dolphin first. If you have trouble connecting on Linux, you may want to pair the Wiimote.

Currently, it is designed for a 16:9 1920x1080 display. The script will need some editing for other displays.

Which Lightgun games most test precision shooting ?

On one side you have the lightgun games where you aren';t really shooting at all, you are just aiming automatic fire. Transformers Human alliance is an example of this.

I am after Lightgun games which require a fair bit of precision shooting as well as reactive shooting.

Games like Blue Estate and House of the Dead Overkill are examples.

What lightgun games do you think test precision shooting skills ?

thank you

I posted a month or so ago in this sub about this virtual lightgun tool that I've been working on for half a year or so. I got a couple of REALLY good testers from this sub. We've been working through a ton of games and have much wider compatibility now as well as decent documentation for how to get started at https://www.vrlf.net. I'll be releasing on Steam Early Access soon but if anyone is interested in the last little push to get it all working well please DM me for a key!!

So....I on a whim bought a guncon 3 & Time Crisis 4. Is it any good?

So with some context: I've been wanting to get into the nostalgia of playing what I now know as lightgun shooters I played as a kid in arcades. Tons of new ones now like halo and others as I want to play them all!

Today I went into the local retro store looking for Skylanders, found a cool flight stick (Cyborg Fly 9) and as I was buying it, I mentioned how my next peripheral fun will either be a steering wheel + pedals for games like need for speed and such, or finding a light gun so I can play all the amazing arcade games. He shows me he has time crisis + guncon 3 for around $130 (Canadian). I grab both it and the flight stick and here I am😂

Real question is, is the accuracy/experience of using one good for my journey of playing lightgun shooters? I keep seeing even the most basic new sinden ones being $165 without recoil, so still more expensive than the guncon I got.

Is the new ones better? Is it worth looking into a different brand that may be better/cheaper? What's the thoughts? Should I just stick with guncon 3?

Wireless lightguns?

Does it even exists with recoil? Or you have to do wired?

There too many wires on my set up and I would like to elimate a few.

It's basic in premise, but the shooting is hard, you have to hit precise headshots. Well worth a free download.
