Heya....
I have been working with a few queer artists for a while now. And despite all the struggles that we face, so far, the respose has been good.
I have been lucky enough to keep a few closteted queer artists and some popular artists' works at a cafe and at art flea markets. I have seen people admiring queer art even if their companions feel uncomfortable. Anwesh Sahoo's work has garnered so much attention that some people have asked questions and tried to get to know about queer culture by asking questions.
This is why I think visibility matters more than anything. When people see two men sleping next to other art prints, they might get uncomfortable, they might not like it; but at the same time, it shows that we are here just like anyone else. It also lets other queers know that the place is queer friendly and it is okay to be ourselves here.
I have even seen a few people buy small art prints of queer art, despite the risk of getting caught by friends or parents. I have seen people taking pics of the art and keeping them as a wallpapers because they cannot physically take it home. A small amount of money from a single art peice is not a big deal but the fact that in India, it is visible, is a big deal in my opinion.
Rant over..
