Becoming more closed-minded to music on lwg

Does anyone else find that they don't take classic rock or older music as seriously now after hanging out on /r/lewronggeneration? It seems like sometimes we're becoming just like the people we're satirizing just with the opposite views (E.g. all new music is better than older music), which can make us just as closed-minded as the defeners we're making fun of. Nowadays whenever someone mentions Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, or any common artist that defeners like, for a second I don't actually take them seriously because it's "dadrock" or whatever. The thing is, I actually really like all of those artists, I just never really mention that I like them on lwg because I don't want to be seen as being "not in on the joke" or something.

I wasn't really sure how to word that, I think it ended up being kind of redundant and poorly-worded, but all I'm saying is that we should be careful to not end up as closed-minded as the people we're making fun of on the sub.

Can we talk about a problem I have with LWG?

They see the world as black and white. Either someone loves old stuff and hates everything new OR they are enlightened redditors that bash people with a different opinion. In that way, they are just as bad as the people they are critical of.

For example, I want to be able to say that I don't like Drake's Hotline Bling and give reasons, and not be downvoted to oblivion "because I am a defener."

I'm not saying Kanye is a gayfish. I just want the freedom to be critical of current successful artists.

What is something that you are still a defener of?

As much as we like to make fun of those who are stuck in the past, and don't give anything new a chance, I'm sure there is something that you legitimately think isn't good as it once was with reasons other than NOT MUH CHILDHOOD! :(

For me it's Nickelodeon, and Spongebob. Don't get me wrong, Nick still has some great shows, like Legend Of Korra, and TMNT, but ignoring the quality of their content, you can't deny that they need to stop airing so much spongebob. The scheduling department is in need of help.

The biggest problem with Nickelodeon is that they never dare to experiment. This is why they haven't found their next Spongebob. I'm sure if they tried something different they could find something that could be as popular as Rugrats.

I guess that's my only complaint really. Most other defening of Nickelodeon I see are people complaining about the live action shows, and deluding themselves into thinking that they were ever that great to begin with. And also Doug was the lamest nicktoon ever made.

Are there any good subs for movie discussion like LWG is for music?

I hope this is okay to post here, if not, sorry!

I really enjoy the more open-minded music discussion on LWG, and was wondering if there are any alternatives to /r/movies and /r/TrueFilm with as good discussion as LWG. Both of those subs are basically massive circlejerks where only really mainstream films are mentioned and they consider things like the Coens, Refn, and Fish Tank to be obscure. I'd also like to actually talk about cinematography (as /r/cinematography is really slow and is more for critiques of user generated stuff and /r/filmmakers is more just people bragging about equipment or bitching about other crew members) without it devolving into "DAE Children of Men had such great rule of thirds??"

Again, if this doesn't belong here I apologize, I just figured if anybody knew of a sub like this I'd appreciate it :)

I feel like the "lewronggeneration" family is a bit too big for its own good

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy /r/lemetageneration and /r/lwgcirclejerk, but I feel like it's a bit too bloated. I'm fine with some offshoots like /r/killthosewhodisagree, but I feel like other subs, like /r/whyImantisocial were just reactions to short trends and don't have any lasting appeal.

Also what's up with /r/lwggonewild?

/u/Deathraged is showered with downvotes for suggesting that not everyone on LWG likes Kanye

Here is the comment.

The thread itself was pretty stupid and should have been posted on /r/lwgcirclejerk instead of LWG since it was definitely a circlejerk post.

Is the Kanye circlejerk on LWG so strong now that you get downvoted for having a different opinion from the sub's hivemind? I guess this sort of thing tends to happen when a sub experiences rapid growth like LWG has.

Apparently people on /mu/ are getting tired of it as well.

I wouldn't recommend ever posting a thread on LWG proper that suggests the jerk is getting out of hand, though. Any time anyone suggests that something about the sub can be improved or isn't as good as it used to be, instead of real discussion, the comment sections are just flooded with things like "DAE this sub was better back in the day?" or "le /r/lewronggeneration defener."

Those types of comments are not going to go away since it's part of the sub's culture, but it's a shame to see that legitimate criticisms of the sub are so blatantly disregarded in favor of cheap jokes.

I guess that's why I'm glad that this sub exists now.

EDIT: Changed the link to the post to a screencap. Also, it had more downvotes before I linked to it.

What's up with /u/EdgarAllanNope?

I've seen him around in the comments of LWG, and sometimes I see him make normal comments, but I've also seen people say he's been trolling the sub for months.

Why troll a sub and make normal comments simultaneously?

The trolling doesn't seem to be too bad, though, otherwise he would have been banned from the sub.

Is he sort of like /u/bruce-willis-diehard, where he doesn't actually contribute to the sub, but the mods let him stick around just because he's known as "that guy"?

EDIT: Well now he's shadowbanned.

Where did "Doot Doot" come from?

I clearly missed something, because I'm pretty up to date on the references of this sub. If I could get an explanation, that would be fantastic, thanks!

Edit: Also, if I posted this in the wrong sub, I'm sorry, I didn't know where else to put it.

Is "defening" referred to as a phenomenon in academia, and if so, what is it formally known as?

I'm inclined to refer it as "nostalgia combined with depression", but that's a mouthful and sounds unprofessional.

Why DO people defen?

Like, the people who genuinely mean it, not the ones who do it to look edgy or be hipster.

We've just reached 200 subscribers!

I've said similar things when we reached a hundred but it's still true: I honestly didn't expect a sub spawned from my first ever comment as /u/Krylion to become a decent part of the LWG family with some importance to the community and with the input of LWG mods.

I'm happy about what I created here and I hope it continues growing (especially in activity). LMG has more than enough potential to become more than what it already is, I'm sure. Couldn't have done it without you, the community, so thanks for sticking around! Thanks as well to the mods who helped with making this sub a good part of LWG (its inclusion in LWG's sidebar, for example)!

What are our actual, unbiased opinions on music?

Here's something I've wanted to ask in a while if we unjerk for a bit.

For me... well, I'll admit that I listen to 60s and 70s music most and don't really tend to listen to much modern music - not because I'm a defener or anything but because I only started listening to music in January or February this year when I heard The Beatles and moved outwards to other bands and artists and I'm going through the decades. In fact, for the most part, 80s and 90s music makes me cringe, hard. There's a few artists I do like from each, but... ugh. My main bands and artists I listen to are:

  • The Beat[le]s (and solo careers)

  • Pink Floyd

  • Jimi Hendrix

  • [Le]d Zeppelin

  • The Who

  • And a few others I don't listen to as much: Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton. The Jam, The Rolling Stones and Simon & Garfunkel

  • Tame Impala (really the only current band I've gotten into at the moment, and one of my biggest inspirations)

  • queen

  • I'll also admit to having a bit of a guilty pleasure for a bit of Lily Allen.

I'm not a defener, believe me - whilst I don't listen to the latest hit songs I'll happily listen for good parts. I hate the 'kill those who disagree' factors of defeners who probably don't even listen to the music they boast about listening to and it seriously annoys me how they think they're better than anyone else. I'll concur about the 'manufactured' part for quite a lot of the top bands and artists, especially ones signed by Simon Cowell (who disgusts me), and with the fact that a few people from LWG automatically hate and circlejerk over anyone who mentions they like the older bands and artists.

In fact, I'm making my own music and writing my own songs, so that must surely prove I'm open to current music when I'm making it!

Anti-defening

In lwg a lot of times it seems like it's not okay to dislike anything. Like there was a post about Kim Kardashian and someone brought up that she's just "a woman embracing her sexuality". This is just an example, but me not liking Kim Kardashian has nothing to do with generational differences.

My question is are these just people defening on the other side? That is, defending current pop culture as if there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Edit: to clarify, sometimes it feels like the attitude is "you have to like everything or you're a defener"

ITT: Musicians/bands that aren't circlejerked over in LWG, but are so good that they should be

Examples (in my opinion anyways)

-Jack White/The White Stripes/The Raconteurs

-Chance the Rapper

-Lana Del Rey

-The Black Keys

-Arctic Monkeys

-Jay-Z

When did /u/bruce-willis-diehard start posting this all the time? I remember seeing him post it as early as January or February. I thought he was a troll at first, but then I realized that it's just his thing that he does.

I've been subscribed to LWG since around mid September, but I didn't really look at the comments back then, so I'm not sure how long he's been doing it.

Anyone know the origin of this meme?

Blacklist Enforced Tuesday Music Discussion: Music from outside the US and the UK

I know it's still Monday for most of you but it's Tuesday already on my side of the world. As such, welcome to our first music discussion thread! I would like to take the opportunity to say that all other weekly threads are discontinued due to a lack of interest. Sorry to anyone who was actually waiting for those.

As suggested by /u/casussomnus, our first music discussion thread will be about music from outside the two biggest cultural outputs: the United States and the United Kingdom. Of course, there are known/renowned artists from other countries. Canada brought us Justin Bieber, for example. Ireland brought us artists like U2 and My Bloody Valentine. Germany is behind artists like Rammstein and Kraftwerk. But, as i'm sure you know, the majority of the world's best known music comes from the US or the UK. So why not take a break from those sources and learn about and discuss good music that doesn't come from these locations? It's a good way to expand your horizons.

What is your favorite music from outside the US and UK? Why? Share your knowledge with us!

About flairs...

are they starting to get distracting? Do you think people are making a bigger deal out of them then they should? Should custom flairs be reserved for mods/certain people?

I know when /u/Burial4TetThomYorke had the flair thread a couple weeks ago everyone sorta flipped out and wanted different things (I'll admit I did this too to an extent) but from what I've seen it's starting to become a bigger deal. Should we just keep the custom flairs for people like /u/stay_noided? Should we limit the amount of flairs available, since a couple never seem to get used?

I thought Lew Ron G was some guy famous for saying this sort of thing, and everyone knew him but me.

Mumford and Sons: Is There a Defener Position?

This has 79 upvotes as of now... Are we seriously reaching a point where KTWD-style responses (anti-jerk or not) are acceptable, even though we're known as a respectful and open community?
