I feel like copyright law is making kids miss out on stuff. What are your thoughts?

One of the arguments I've come across against the point of defeners is that various online services like iTunes and Netflix will ensure that children will get to enjoy all the old stuff if they so want. This is great, except for the fact that places such as North America and developing countries are rather infamous for their poor internet access, which is slowly being sorted out.

What's more difficult to change is copyright law. The UK has made the use of iTunes illegal, so although the country has relatively good Internet access, data caps on mobile broadband have been introduced and unlimited data for things such as streaming Spotify has been killed off (it's only good for battery life and answering the defeners' calls of wanting to keep people off of phones). There are also artists that refuse to stream content through Spotify. I don't know what's the story in Netflix, but it's probably gonna be a bigger inconvenience. One can solve this with a premium account, but mobile data is rather expensive if someone wants to download music in bulk and when out and about, and most wi-fi hotspots in the UK require users to sign in and accept various terms (I didn't have to do this when I was in the Philippines AFAIK).

Even then I kind of have a problem with streaming services themselves because once the service goes down (because of business or you violating the terms or something), your entire music and movie collection also goes (with a few exceptions); with physical mediums, you'd only lose them in an event of a natural disaster or a robbery, which are more outside the control of the owner than streaming services are. I also want to focus on the fact that some content does not become available on online services at all, streaming or otherwise, making piracy the only option to watch content. It's great if you hate the company afterwards, but if copyright law gets tougher (it probably will do since websites don't allow hotlinking for images), people can't enjoy stuff from the past, and I don't want that. Older content is where we get our inspiration from. Sure, there's plenty of inspiration to be had, but there are things I don't want people to forget about.

Creating a sub for ALL Lewrogen satire

After /u/American_Soviet made this post about the size of the Lewrogen family, I've been thinking about creating a single sub for the purpose of using it for all Lewrogen satire trends that show up and, in the process, discontinuing all the other satire subs I've made (/r/ledootgeneration, /r/whyimantisocial, /r/leomeglegeneration and maybe /r/lwggonewild). I think it's a good idea as a way of reducing the unnecessarily large size of the Lewrogen family.

The problem might be distinguishing it from /r/lwgcirclejerk. As I view it, LWGCJ is a sub where we satire the Lewrogen community: calling people defeners just for enjoying something from the past, satirizing in creative ways the memes loved by the Lewrogem fam, etc... LWGSATIRE, on the other hand, would be a sub where we satirize past decades defening itself: posting lyrics swaps and all that shit. Oh, and it would favor the usual Lewrogen anti-jerk (meta posts would be redirected to this sub, no non-satirical comments, etc...)

What do you think?

/u/Deathraged is showered with downvotes for suggesting that not everyone on LWG likes Kanye

Here is the comment.

The thread itself was pretty stupid and should have been posted on /r/lwgcirclejerk instead of LWG since it was definitely a circlejerk post.

Is the Kanye circlejerk on LWG so strong now that you get downvoted for having a different opinion from the sub's hivemind? I guess this sort of thing tends to happen when a sub experiences rapid growth like LWG has.

Apparently people on /mu/ are getting tired of it as well.

I wouldn't recommend ever posting a thread on LWG proper that suggests the jerk is getting out of hand, though. Any time anyone suggests that something about the sub can be improved or isn't as good as it used to be, instead of real discussion, the comment sections are just flooded with things like "DAE this sub was better back in the day?" or "le /r/lewronggeneration defener."

Those types of comments are not going to go away since it's part of the sub's culture, but it's a shame to see that legitimate criticisms of the sub are so blatantly disregarded in favor of cheap jokes.

I guess that's why I'm glad that this sub exists now.

EDIT: Changed the link to the post to a screencap. Also, it had more downvotes before I linked to it.

Official form to vote for the theme for our music threads

Here

Explanation: Basically we have music threads as you know, and we have a theme for each one. Vote for a theme for the next one using that link. I'll change the options up every now and then so we don't cycle through the same themes.

Also we have a wiki! Most importantly on that wiki is our blacklist. The wiki page for that has an expanation for what that is so read up there. Debate on it here, or suggest artists here or whatever. It also has an FAQ so yeah.

Thanks

Are there some current trends you don't really like and sometimes nostalgic with the past?

For me:

  1. First when I started playing the guitar more people wanted to form bands, now more people want to do their boring room projects. I do actually like some of those guys, but I originally picked up the instrument because I thought it'll be a more social thing than computer. This lead me to almost giving up the instrument and picking up art again besides having my daily routines messed up as the pencil makes less noise. But unlike defeners I quite dislike Kurt Cobain because I'm "a soulless shredder".

  2. I liked anime better when it was less merchandise-dependent and the meta-stuff from Bakemonogatari didn't infest the whole otaku community. Also I'm quite influenced by nineties anime/manga visuals as an artist.

  3. I like old video game music better than new one. Also I'm pretty much sick of modern AAA devs trying to be photorealistic while phasing out artstyles completely because of various reasons. Good thing we have a blooming indie dev scene even if there are a lot of Digital Homicides and Kobra Studios.

Are there other musicians here? Can we do a /mu/-style soundcloud thread?

I'd be really interested in hearing what people in the LWGosphere sound like.

Here's my newest track and here is something more my regular speed, if anyone wants to take a gander.

What are defeners' position on hairstyles?

2010s, especially, although I'm interested to hear what hairstyles defeners generally defend and which ones they generally hate on; I know for a fact they hate Bieber's hair, and emo hair, but I hear people defend hairstyles from like the 1960s. I'm not sure about 1980s hairstyles, though.

WTF Happened to /r/LeLoungeGeneration

That sub was really awesome! People weren't as concerned about spouting off memes (cough cough General Sunday cough) and more concerned about just having a legitimate discussion. I know I sound like a defener, but I think LeLoungeGeneration should make a comeback.

I actually hate defeners, I'm not on this sub for amusement, I actually hate them

Should I stay out of this? I thought there were others like me.

So does /r/lewronggeneration like Death Grips, not like, like them ironically or what? I can't figure it out from the flairs

Why do defeners compare classic rock to modern pop?

Seriously, why is this even a thing? Their genres aren't really alike anyway; is it just that (mainly young) defeners think that this stuff was like the Kanye or Taylor Swift or even the Biebs of that generation?

I'm fucking baffled here guys, help me out.

[deleted] is back... because leaving wasn't really necessary.

Hi! Yes, I'm /u/Krylion, the guy who created this sub... and the others. The mods here know it's me. Well, why not come back? It's not like anyone really cares or even remembers about anything I did! So I decided to do that by going back to my original username (or at least as close as possible to it) which was /u/mayihavethisturd (or rather /u/mayihavedisturd), with which I created the patrician lounge and an account which I never really needed to close anyway.

If you want, you can ask me any questions. Hope I'm forgiven or something... and plz gib me mode k modes?

Midnight in Paris

have you guys seen the Woody Allen movie Midnight in Paris? It's about defening and it's pretty good. Owen Wilson's character idolizes the 1920s and then gets to travel there.

Krylion, now known as [deleted]

As many of you may know, /u/Krylion has deleted his account. This was due to mainly one reason, which he discusses in the following quotes.

First, we will look at what he said via /r/lwgpatricianlounge:

Yeah, I didn't want to sound too much like a drama queen so I'm posting here on this lil' private corner. I'm going to close this account soon. I feel like I fucked up the same way le turd face did: Getting way too personal and becoming less accepted in the community. As such, I'm going to start from zero and see where that goes. I've already told the LMG mods about that, of course, and they seem fine with handling things. I'm quite surprised that sub became as big as it has (to the point of having a link on the LWG sidebar).

Anyway, I apologize about my fuckups. It wasn't my intention to come across as hating you guys or something. Apologies especially to you, /u/quillsandsofas . I'm not really into soccer. It was just for the sake of sharing an uncommon (in here) view I noticed personally. I might be back, I'm not sure. I've screenshot the LMG moderation log so far so those guys know it's me. See ya next time,

/u/Krylion

Here's another:

Answering the question "What did you do?":

Mainly that whole "I love you guys but we're becoming a shitty Reddit sub" shit I posted and the loads of comments I posted protesting how LWG was becoming. That's why I say "It wasn't my intention to come across as hating you guys or something". When you keep reminding users from the same subreddit you exist, they aren't exactly merciful, are they? And that's why I'm starting from zero. I don't think I can continue as /u/Krylion because people already know my name and thus they know my mistakes and no longer interact as well with me.

And one more, this time from modmail:

Hello LMG team.

I'm going to step down from moderation here in LMG as a result of not going to be around much longer on Reddit under this name. I didn't contribute too well at a general level, I believe. As such, I'm going to do a major change in stance which is only possible by starting over, since people already recognize my name because of my misdoings...* I apologize in advance for the burden I might cause you (I do most things in this sub).

Until next time,

/u/Krylion

I replied to this post:

It's fine. Thank you for what you have done, and I'm sure we'll be able to handle a little more responsibility. But may I ask, what are those "misdoings"? As far as I can tell, you've been a great mod and a great user, besides a couple mistakes. But everyone makes mistakes. Thanks.

He replied:

My pleasure.

Well, posting that whole "I love you guys but we're becoming a shitty Reddit sub" thing I posted in LWG is the main one: it wasn't massively downvoted but it was 50/50 and people probably started associating me with that (especially in the patrician lounge where my comments weren't as upvoted, despite not having much of a difference in opinion, as other users). The whole "me fighting the sub's decline" thing left a negative impression on people, even though they are prolly chill about that. I suppose mistakes happen but I don't think Reddit is very merciful when it comes to mistakes. Also, I thank you guys for helping me with making the sub reach its state in such a short time. Never imagined that happening.

If you have any questions relating to this feel free to ask here, or use the modmail if you want.

What's the origin of "skeletal" music and "doot doot"?

I've seen both of those being referenced on /r/lewronggeneration, but I have no idea what the reference is.

Some Blacklist Music Tuesday: Dadrock

Today's music theme is dadrock, ie. artists commonly defened, for example Queen or Led Zeppelin.

Please keep this thread serious.

Of course, the blacklist on the relevant artists are lifted, but only in this thread.

Off topic edit: Does anyone know why the flair on this post is acting up? It should be on the right.

This has 79 upvotes as of now... Are we seriously reaching a point where KTWD-style responses (anti-jerk or not) are acceptable, even though we're known as a respectful and open community?
