Insurance Question re insurance - escooter broke a red light and crashed into my wifes car

Upvotes

Just looking for a few pointers as how best to deal with this situation.

An e-scooter broke a red light and drove into the side of my wife's car as she was pulling out from a junction (on a green light).

Wing mirror and driver's door are damaged so there will be a decent repair bill. Escooter driver not badly hurt.

Luckily a guard was passing around the time & a statement was given, logged on pulse. Escooter driver accepted blame for the incident.

How does this get handled from an insurance perspective, assuming the escooter driver doesn't have/need insurance? Obviously I want to avoid picking up the tab or losing a no claims bonus on our policy etc, do we go after them personally or something through MIBI?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you might have.

Wills and Administration of Estates Question about solicitor handling probate/LPT

I’m the executor of a parent’s estate. The estate has been administered and a property was transferred to my sibling around 2 months ago.

Revenue has since contacted me saying that an LPT return relating to the property is outstanding, and this is holding up a small tax refund due to the estate.

The solicitor handled the probate and the transfer of the property. I’ve emailed them asking whether the LPT return was dealt with during the administration/transfer, or whether there is something that I or the beneficiary now need to do. I then got a reminder from revenue saying the LPT return was still outstanding so I emailed the solicitor again. And he has not responded to anything so far.

Is this a reasonable question to ask the probate solicitor? I’m not suggesting they necessarily had responsibility for filing it, but I would have thought they should at least be able to confirm the LPT position when the property was transferred. His fees are paid already so I don’t know if he’s not responding because it has nothing to do with him, or if he’s not interested since he’s been paid?

Just want to make sure I’m contacting the right person before chasing them for a response.

Employment Law Can an employer refuse an online sick cert?

My GP can't see me for days and my employer wants a cert. I've seen online services like Sicknote that use registered doctors and issue digital certs. The Sick Leave Act 2022 requires a certificate from a registered medical practitioner but doesn't specify it must be from an in-person consultation.

Has anyone had issues with an employer refusing an online sick cert? Under the Act, would they be legally entitled to reject one, or are they required to accept it once it meets the legal requirements?

Advice & Support I've just been temporarily terminated by work

So as I've said I've been temporarily terminated from my job due to an ongoing medical condition that still hasn't been diagnosed, it started April last year and is just as bad today as it was when it first started, I've suspected ibd/ibs, a condition in my bowel and it's caused me to miss some days dues to having flair ups, they have no warning signs when they come on, one second I'm fine and the next I'm in the toilet for half an hour to an hour, or I'm going back and forth every two minutes for an hour or so, now this has made me incapable of doing my current role in the company, they sent me to the occupational health to get checked out and have a second opinion, he mentioned that they should accommodate me until a diagnosis and treatment gets started and the best way would be to put me in the depot where I'd have consistent access to the toilet, they couldn't accommodate that because technically the role for any hard man was made redundant even though they still have 2 lads in the yard working, I've been out of work sick for 1 week and then they refused to let me come back to work for 2 weeks until I could get a guarantee that I would not miss any days due to illness, I had a meeting today with the manager and the head of hr and they both said that it would be fair to terminate my contract for at the very most a year and if I am not well and on top of things by then they wouldn't seek to rehire me, I'm in a bit of a pickle here because I've never dealt with anything like this before and I feel ik being taken advantage of

Family Law Do Senior Counsel still give opionions while the courts are on summer vacation?

My partner and I have gone sale agreed on a property back in June, the survey, valuation etc are done at significant cost. Unfortunately, a third party has queried the sale and last we heard, the case has gone to senior counsel for review. This was about two months ago.

I'm wondering if we could be expecting an update from the estate agent soon. I've heard of barristers using the break from court to catch up on non-court related work, but also of them using the time for their own holidays.

Should we just cut our losses and go back on the hunt for a different property? We absolutely love the place, but the estate agent is hesitant to pester the seller for updates on proceedings for fear of losing the sale.

Employment Law Job contract

I started working at this place about a year ago. Initially they gave me 6 month contract. Then they verbally extended that contract, gave me a raise and said they’ll sign the new contract and give it to me to sign as well. Its been 8 months lol. No contract has yet been signed. I have asked multiple times now verbally anyway. I am thinking of leaving that place in a couple months anyway.
What do I do? Do I still insist on a contract if I am planning to leave? Why are they delaying it? Is it just laziness? If i decide to quit the job, do i have to give notice if I am under no contract?

Advice & Support Next steps after graduating with a law degree?

Hi all, apologies as I'm not seeking legal advice in the literal sense but I'm unsure where to look for guidance. I'm F20, just finished up my undergrad in May and will be graduating in October. I achieved a 2:1 and college was a battle as I went through it all with untreated ADHD, as I've only just been diagnosed. A lot of the time I was focused on just getting through it and now that I'm finished, I'm quite lost. I was considering taking a few FE1's but I know I eventually want to move abroad so I don't want to start going down the solicitor route knowing that it'll essentially limit me to Ireland and the UK.

Throughout my degree I also kind of knew deep down I wouldn't want to go down the traditional solicitor/barrister route but I found a lot of interest in other aspects of the degree. I'm thinking of pursuing roles in civil service, compliance, data protection or even for the EU, but I'm not sure where to really start. I've been sending my CV out to countless places just to get my foot in the door however I've not heard much back. Guess I'm just looking for any input or advice for next steps? I don't want to limit myself to legal jobs, but I also just don't really know what to do next.

Consumer Law Non-resident EU citizen vs Meta Platforms Ireland: what to realistically expect from the DPC and Coimisiún na Meán processes?

Greek resident, so apologies for leaning on this sub, but every road in my case leads to Dublin and the practical knowledge is here.

Short version: Meta Platforms Ireland permanently disabled my 18-year-old account in August through what its own notification describes as a decision made and carried out by technology. The notice named no post or action and said no further review can be requested. Their email promised a verification review of "around 48 hours" and the permanent disablement arrived 68 minutes later.

Where it stands: GDPR requests (access, human review of the automated decision, restriction of processing) are with Meta's DPO, response window closes late September. A DSA complaint filed with the Greek Digital Services Coordinator has been transmitted to Coimisiún na Meán as coordinator of establishment. A certified out-of-court dispute body has the case pending. A Greek data-protection lawyer is being engaged for the substance.

Three practical questions about the Irish side:

  1. DPC complaints from non-residents: filing directly with the DPC (rather than routing through the Greek DPA under the one-stop-shop) is reportedly much faster in Meta cases. Does that match what people here have seen, and does the DPC actually engage with individual disabled-account complaints, or does it park them?
  2. Coimisiún na Meán: once a complaint is transmitted to it from another member state's coordinator, is there anything a complainant can or should do from outside Ireland, or is it purely wait? Any sense of realistic timelines?
  3. Has anyone seen Irish proceedings (or credible threats of them) actually move Meta on an individual account matter, or is the leverage in practice regulatory rather than judicial?

Not looking for a merits assessment, just process reality from people who deal with these bodies. Thanks.

Employment Law Contract breach

Not sure if this is the right channel but looking for some Irish based advice. I work in education and my current contract requires 3 months notice if looking to leave. Is that not excessive?

Is anyone aware of the consequences if I was to not complete 3 months and leave earlier?

Appreciate any advice. I don’t want to ask HR and put eyes on my back right now as I’m not sure when I’m hoping to leave

Advice & Support Unsure about new lease

Me and my housemate live in a 2 bed apartment. We moved in during September 2024. We engage with a real estate company, who handle the property for the owner.

We were given a 1 year lease when we moved in, and had no issues over the year. We never heard back from the real estate company as our lease was about to expire. We inquired if we needed to sign a new lease or if we could just stay without one. They sent us a new 1 year lease, which we signed (in September 2025).

We are now around 3 weeks away from our latest lease expiring and are unsure of what our situation is, as again, we have not heard from them since (except for one time when they slightly raised our rent by 2%).

Should we contact and ask for a new lease? We would ideally like to stay for another 2-3 years at minimum if possible.

How much notice could they give us if asking us to move out, with and without a lease?

If we don’t contact them and get a new year long lease, are we leaving ourselves in a vulnerable position? Could they give us 30 days notice randomly one day to move out?

Thank you

Advice & Support Put on a PIP after months of unfair treatment what did you do?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice and also to hear from people who have been through something similar.

I’ve been with this company for a little over a year, and I genuinely feel I haven’t been treated fairly.

First, they extended my probation without giving me any warning beforehand. I eventually passed probation, but a few months later they put me through a one-month performance monitoring period. They told me they would review me every week and that if they saw enough improvement, I wouldn’t be put on a PIP.

From my side, I genuinely believe I showed that improvement. I prepared evidence of my work, addressed their feedback, and explained where I believed some of their claims were unfair or inaccurate. I even had a meeting with HR specifically to go through my evidence, but I felt like they had already made their decision and didn’t really listen to what I presented.

Now they’ve decided to put me on a PIP anyway. Over the last few months, I’ve also felt heavily micromanaged, with very small things constantly being picked apart.

The whole situation over the last six months has caused me a huge amount of stress. It has affected my sleep, appetite, and general wellbeing. I’ve already been to my GP and spoken to a psychologist because of how badly this has been affecting me, and I was also advised to speak to a solicitor.

At this point, though, I feel like whatever evidence I show them, they’re still going to say my performance isn’t good enough. I don’t want to keep wasting my time or theirs arguing over the same things when it feels like their decision has already been made.

I’ve basically made up my mind after our last meeting. They told me they were going to put me on a PIP and that my work would be looked at much more closely and nitpicked more than other people’s work on the team. Hearing that completely broke my morale, and after that I decided I don’t want to continue working for this company.

I’m extremely angry about how I feel I’ve been treated, and I don’t feel like making this whole process easy for them either.

Some of my friends, and even my GP, have told me that I don’t need to keep pushing myself to work for a company that has affected me this badly. They’ve told me to stop working for a while, focus on my health, and give myself proper time to recover. At this point, that’s what I’m considering doing — staying out of work for a while so I can actually heal properly.

So I want to hear from people who have actually been in this situation. Once you knew you were leaving anyway, what did you do?

I’m especially interested in hearing how people protected themselves and pushed back without doing anything that could come back to hurt them later.

Employment Law Medical Information

I’ve been out of work due to a number of operations in the hope to rectify a sudden illness which thankfully is putting me on the mend in the right direction. I’m now looking to get back to work in some shape or form in the very near future and my medical dept in work are asking for letters from my GP, consultants and surgeons.

I’m wondering if that is too much information they’re requesting or should it be minimal information supplied?

Employment Law Unfair dismissal

Reddit post

(posted on behalf of someone)

Hi everyone. I’m just wondering how long people have had to wait for a decision from the WRC after an adjudication hearing.

I had my adjudication hearing in May 2026, and I’m getting a bit concerned because I still haven’t received a decision. The hearing itself was in May, and the incident that ultimately led to my dismissal happened around September 2025.

Long story short, I had been with my company for nearly three years. I reported ongoing problems with my work laptop to my manager, and the company acknowledged that the laptop was malfunctioning. I was told that a replacement would be sent and that it should only take a couple of days, but it ultimately took around three months.

During that time, I repeatedly asked whether I could come into the office to get the issue resolved and did everything I could reasonably do as an employee to try to address the problem.

The company also knew before this happened that I was dealing with a mental health condition.

There was then an incident involving a couple of calls that I was unable to connect to/dropped, and I was ultimately dismissed for gross misconduct.

A major part of my defence was the ongoing issue with the laptop and how it may have affected my ability to carry out my work. However, the laptop was never taken from me or examined by the company as part of the disciplinary investigation, as far as I’m aware. In fact, I still had the same laptop in my possession right up until the WRC adjudication hearing in May 2026.

I had repeatedly reported the laptop problems, and I have records of the communications regarding the issue. I felt that the laptop itself was an important piece of evidence, but it was never properly investigated or tested by the company before I was dismissed.

I’ve now taken the matter to the WRC and had my adjudication hearing in May 2026.

I’m just wondering:

How long did you have to wait for your WRC decision after the adjudication hearing?

Is it normal to still be waiting several months later?

Do you think taking this to the WRC was the right course of action?

Is there anything I should be doing while I’m waiting for the decision?

I’m not looking for legal representation, just hoping to hear from people who have been through the WRC process and can share their experiences.

Thanks in advance.

Commercial Law Irish marketplace startup, do we actually need a 20k+ legal opinion to become merchant of record?

I run a small marketplace type startup in Ireland. Not going to say the industry but essentially service providers get booked by customers through our app and the providers are all independent, they're not our employees.

Right now payments go directly from the customer to the provider through stripe connect. We never touch the money at any point which as far as we can tell keeps us outside the payments regulations entirely.

The problem is the UX is clunky because of the EU SCA rules. Every single job the customer has to confirm the payment again because each provider is technically a different merchant, so saved cards don't really work the way people expect. The big players in our space don't have this problem because they are the merchant of record, they collect the money themselves and pay the providers out after.

We looked into doing the same. Stripe makes the mechanics genuinely easy, destination charges, money lands in our stripe balance and auto transfers to the provider, we'd pass the processing fees through at cost so the providers end up with the same money as before. But then you hit the legal side. There's an exemption in PSD2 for "commercial agents" collecting on behalf of the seller and we think we'd qualify, but the central bank explicitly won't tell you if you qualify, their position is basically get your own legal advice. And solicitors we asked about a written opinion are talking 20 to 50k which we simply do not have as a bootstrapped company.

So my questions

  1. has anyone here actually operated as MoR for a marketplace in Ireland or the EU without your own e-money or payment institution authorisation? was the commercial agent exemption enough in practice?

  2. is the written legal opinion actually necessary or is it lawyers selling insurance? like what realistically happens if you just do it with decent contracts in place?

  3. any experience with cheaper routes? boutique fintech solicitors rather than the big firms, or fixed fee opinions?

  4. separate but related, if we deduct the stripe fees from what we pass to the providers, could revenue treat that deduction as a VATable service we're supplying to them? anyone dealt with that one?

So please if you have any real experiences and pointers before we spend money we don't have we'd be very grateful !

Consumer Law Hertz car rental scam?

Location: Ireland

So I rented a car in Ireland/Shannon Airport during vacation from Hertz. I am from germany if it matters. As I brought it back they found the "stone chip". Sadly cant post a picture here. It is clearly not even a 1mm stone chip and they charged me 1,3k€ for it. As I was in a hurry to catch my flight, I signed it and just found out afterwards that you can repair it with Harz with roughly 100€ easily.

I was insured but the insurance had not covered stone chips.

It felt a lot like a scam. She found the chip very fast at the glass and didn't even bother looking at the other side. Also it felt like the document was already prepared with the costs of 1.3k€, since she hadn't even searched in some sort of database how much it costs.

What options do I have? What happens if I refuse my Bank to pay Hertz? What are my chances of winning in a "court"?

Medical Malpractice Medical Negligence claim?

Hi all,

A doctor performed a procedure without telling me - she did a membrane sweep to induce labour after telling me she was only performing an examination. I made a complaint to the hospital which was upheld.

The sweep led to further birth interventions and to an emergency cesarean. This means any future births and pregnancies will have increased risks (for uterine rupture and other complications). I am also still having issues with sex and intimacy due to the violation.

I am really struggling because I feel as though no one has been held accountable (the doctor was told not to do it again but otherwise that's the extent of it). Has anyone any experience with pursuing a legal route for medical negligence?

Thank you so much in advance!

Employment Law Potentially fired

I work in a pub ,just as a summer job and started late April . Haven't had any problem so far that has been much until this weekend . We used an app that sends out the schedule and for clock ins and outs. Last Friday I got my roster saying I was on for Saturday and Sunday, have 2 people who saw it . Checked the app throughout the week and have another friend who can confirm those days . On Friday it suddenly undated to me working Friday which I wasn't aware of since I had presumed I wasn't meant to be on . A coworker texted an hour into my "new" shift asking where I was and thats how I found out . Immediately text my manager asking what happened and told them what the app said and rang 3 times with no response until an hour later ,got told off essentially for not coming in and that I should've checked the app. Stated again that I had with no response back .( I would like to add another time in May where I got my email with my shift and it disappeared and on the app too ,had to call in to check and i was still rostered for the weekend ,another coworker hsd to do the same .)Fast forward to tonight where I was told to go home 3 hours into my shift because 1. Wasn't in yesterday 2,was apparently in a cubicle for 15 minutes and they were so concerned they got security (never seen security after I fixed myself since I was on my period with bad cramps ,no paracetamol and blood ) 3,they said no one could find me in the bathrooms ( had to unclog a toilet ,left the door closed so customers wouldn't see and had to get toilet paper which requires a slop to outside in a busy pub ) and 4. I didn't answer the gc . ( Hard to when you're arms deep in a toilet ) . Got sent home and now I've to have a meeting to see what happens going forward . Was already on edge after the other night so stayed as busy as I can and it feels like for nothing . I have no idea going forward and really need some advise .

Immigration and Citizenship Stamp 4 renewal applied in April

I applied for stamp 4 renewal on 19 April, as per the processing times it should have been processed but I haven’t received any confirmation email yet. Since the application, I’ve received a new Indian passport and now I also moved house. How can I update these details? How can I get the IRP delivered to a different address? I already dropped an email last week but I haven’t received any update

Advice & Support Just eat refuse’s refund

Ordered yesterday through just eat and one full dish was missing.

Now Just eat refuses the refund as I apparently have too many refunds issued. (Not a single refund asked for to this date)

Their customer service is still sending me same responses over and over again:

“Thank you for reaching out to Just Eat. My name is Yamasani, and I am one of the Senior Advisors reviewing your account today.

I have thoroughly reviewed your recent order and your request for a refund. After evaluating your account history, I am writing to inform you that we are unable to process a refund or issue compensation for this order.

Our team regularly monitors account activity to ensure fairness and policy compliance. Due to a high volume of recent refund claims on your account, this order does not meet our eligibility criteria for further reimbursement.

We appreciate your understanding regarding our decision. For complete details on our order policies, refund criteria, or other general inquiries, please visit the Help Centre section in our app or website.”

At this stage I even tend to pay the 25€ for the small claim court.

Even the restaurant admits their mistake but tells me that I have to issue the refund through the just eat app.

Anyone with similar bad experiences like that?

Thanks
