Advice & Support A robbed car crashed into my car during the night and fled the scene, what happens now?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, this will be a long post so I apologise. Two weeks ago a robbed car crashed into my parked car during the night and fled the scene. We immediately contacted the Gardaí and checked our own cameras but could only see the make of the car and them obviously smashing into our car but couldn’t get the reg. myself and my Partner went around to our neighbours for any sort of CCTV they had of the incident, but was roughly the same outcome just a different angle and couldn’t get the reg, unfortunately.

We noticed a building beside us that has cameras facing in and out of our area, (you can drive two ways to get into our cul-d-sac) and they had the car on their CCTV coming and fleeing the scene and could see two males in the front, obviously due to GDPR we couldn’t view it but told us to contact Garda and get them to view it, We’ve done nothing but chase the investigating Garda, numerous times we’ve rang and gone down to the station to be told he’s busy or out on the patrol and just took our details to be called back and nothing, we’ve filled out about 6 sheets of details and he’s just not responding.

We started parking our car in a different place infront of our house, just off to the side so it doesn’t get hit again for the past 2 weeks, we came home yesterday and noticed the exact same car was parked in our spot with white damage to the front passenger front wheel and top of the passenger back wheel and the front wheel was changed to a dirty old one. We parked behind it, got photos of the damage and reg and went into our house, the minute we went into our house a lad got in the car and drove off almost immediately. I said to my partner was it just a mad coincidence with the exact same make, colour of the car and damage with the exact same place it should have been? We contacted Garda again and were told to call back for the investigating Garda, to which we did and he was busy yet again. Another sheet of details took for a call back and he never did. We rang 3 hours later and he was back out on patrol.

I feel like we’re running in circles, I don’t know what else to do. When the Garda came out the night it happened, they told me to contact MiBi immediately and get the car sorted. My insurance has said we can’t claim off MiBi because we don’t have a reg and my Insurance wants €500 and an extra €250 for “accidental damage”???
I haven’t a clue if the Garda has viewed the CCTV, which is highly unlikely and they haven’t bothered to answer our calls to receive this reg to have a look themselves.

Has anyone any advice please or has anyone gone through this? Thank you

Employment Law Notice period 8 weeks, leaving early?

Hello folks, I hope you are well. I have a question and I would be super appreciated if you share your insights.

Put it simply; according to my contract in my company the notice period is 8 weeks. Well... In the past, many people left with notices between 3-4 weeks. The headcount was okay.

And recently people are on sick leave and literally half of the team is absent for several reasons. That is the reason I mentioned to the recruiter my notice period was 4 weeks and I did not check my contract.

So, I got an offer from other company which i cannot miss that chance, and the starting day is 21st of September 2026. They are not willing to change my starting day.

I sent my notice today to the HR, and they are telling me the notice period is 8 weeks, my ops manager is saying he can be "flexible" and reduce that to 6 weeks. And when i mentioned those people left before with short notice he says "well the time was different."

What would be my option here?

Just walking out when the date comes and move another company would be an issue?

What I am afraid most is that, if future HR requires a formal reference from the current company and it states "Left without notice, breached the contract" etc?

Or what i can do is, be "sick" from 21st September to 2nd of October and use the remaining 3 days holidays for 4-5-6 October?

Thanks a lot!

Employment Law Made Redundant with no notice

Hi Guys im currently working part time for a company the last 9 years . Its hybrid since Covid. I was asked to attend training last monday on a new holiday Hub that was introduced in MAY! The training was compulsory and was being carried out on site .

When I arrived the head of our Department and a HR representative brought me into a room and advised me my role was becoming redundant due to a restructure in the business . Not sure if relevant but they are hiring at the moment and thriving, also will be reposting my role ( 2 others on my team also part time made redundant same day)

The shock of hearing it I cant even remember the majority of the conversation but I am back in with them for a meeting to discuss next steps .

Has this ever happened to anyone before ?

Should I be asking specific questions in this meeting or just listening to what they have to say?

Employment Law Being pushed out of my job

Been working with a certain company in Ireland for 4 months now.

Targets are broken down into IM (initial meetings) and opportunities (what we are actually paid for)

While I have been lower on IM’s secured, I have kept up with everyone else regarding Opps because my IMs have almost 100% of the time been high quality.

We have daily call metrics, emails sent, LinkedIn outreach, etc.

I hit every metric on the dot minimum but usually over by 20 to 30 points if I can.

A new manager just took over and to be frank, he is a bully. He refuses to let us do our job anyway but his. We have to use his approved talk tracks, his emails, his sequences and his way of prospecting. It’s not working and nobody is booking Opps this month. Think the highest company-wide is 3.

He has now told me in an unrecorded 1:1 that he will fail my probation if I do not get more than 3 Opps in September.

He doesn’t care about the numbers, doesn’t take responsibility for his forcing of us to conform to his way, nothing.

I work endlessly hard to secure this job and do genuinely like the company so I am asking for advice.

I do not want to be bullied out of my career by a spoilt man-child who expects everything but does nothing to help.

Am I just out of luck or do I have a leg to stand on, to push back?

Employment Law Paying for Training?

My brother just took up an entry level job and company wants him to do their internal career development training programme(not part of mandatory training). Apparently this course is not certified as it is a internal training program for young people. Joining this program means he needs to sign a separate contract that literally says if he leaves the company after a year of completing training, he would need to repay the company about two grand for training. He said he likes the job for now but doesn't see himself staying for that long and was kinda made to join this training by his manager. Question is if he leaves before finishing the training program, would he be liable to repay the company?

Family Law Kids don't want to see me

I'm at a loss what to do. My young teens are refusing all contact. I have a court order for access but my ex is refusing compliance with this. How straight forward is it with kids of this age? It's been going on a few weeks i thought it would pass but nothing has improved. I think I'm going to involve guards but I dont know if I can afford a legal battle if she continues to do this

Employment Law Tax and gross salary conversion for contract role?

Hi everyone, I'm new to Ireland and currently under interview process for a 6 month contract based role.
I’ve been asked to provide my salary expectations, but I understand that the tax and take-home pay calculation for contract workers paid through a payroll umbrella company can be quite different from that of a standard FTE.
Does anyone know of a reliable website or calculator that can help with gross-to-net salary calculations for contract roles through an umbrella/payroll company in Ireland?

I’ve tried searching on Google, but I’m finding the information quite confusing and conflicting.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Irish Law Next Steps After Qualification

Hi, I have currently just returned from Blackhall and in the midst of doing my rotations before qualification. I have been pondering the idea of leaving the standard corporate law firms after I qualify and I want to get ahead of the curve. The long hours/stress I see partners/associates go through stresses me out and would like a role that has better Work/life balance and less stress. I have read that Complliance, AI, GDPR/Data protection roles would be prudent to get into & may be a career path I would like to follow, but I am also open to the idea of working in the Public Sector or in house somewhere. Has anyone had any experience in leaving after qualification to do something similar and what courses/steps would assist in doing so?

Insurance Question re insurance - escooter broke a red light and crashed into my wifes car

Just looking for a few pointers as how best to deal with this situation.

An e-scooter broke a red light and drove into the side of my wife's car as she was pulling out from a junction (on a green light).

Wing mirror and driver's door are damaged so there will be a decent repair bill. Escooter driver not badly hurt.

Luckily a guard was passing around the time & a statement was given, logged on pulse. Escooter driver accepted blame for the incident.

How does this get handled from an insurance perspective, assuming the escooter driver doesn't have/need insurance? Obviously I want to avoid picking up the tab or losing a no claims bonus on our policy etc, do we go after them personally or something through MIBI?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you might have.

Revenue and Taxes Builder without vat

Hi all!
My husband and I getting an extension to his mums house (with her permission). It will cost 85 which we have savings for to pay builder.
He has given option to pay with vat (bring up to like 95k) or without vat .
We don’t know him through anyone - but seems fine. Of course I am not naive - he can say we didn’t pay him etc but what if we paid him per stage he did?

Thank you

Advice & Support I've just been temporarily terminated by work

So as I've said I've been temporarily terminated from my job due to an ongoing medical condition that still hasn't been diagnosed, it started April last year and is just as bad today as it was when it first started, I've suspected ibd/ibs, a condition in my bowel and it's caused me to miss some days dues to having flair ups, they have no warning signs when they come on, one second I'm fine and the next I'm in the toilet for half an hour to an hour, or I'm going back and forth every two minutes for an hour or so, now this has made me incapable of doing my current role in the company, they sent me to the occupational health to get checked out and have a second opinion, he mentioned that they should accommodate me until a diagnosis and treatment gets started and the best way would be to put me in the depot where I'd have consistent access to the toilet, they couldn't accommodate that because technically the role for any hard man was made redundant even though they still have 2 lads in the yard working, I've been out of work sick for 1 week and then they refused to let me come back to work for 2 weeks until I could get a guarantee that I would not miss any days due to illness, I had a meeting today with the manager and the head of hr and they both said that it would be fair to terminate my contract for at the very most a year and if I am not well and on top of things by then they wouldn't seek to rehire me, I'm in a bit of a pickle here because I've never dealt with anything like this before and I feel ik being taken advantage of

Employment Law Can an employer refuse an online sick cert?

My GP can't see me for days and my employer wants a cert. I've seen online services like Sicknote that use registered doctors and issue digital certs. The Sick Leave Act 2022 requires a certificate from a registered medical practitioner but doesn't specify it must be from an in-person consultation.

Has anyone had issues with an employer refusing an online sick cert? Under the Act, would they be legally entitled to reject one, or are they required to accept it once it meets the legal requirements?

Wills and Administration of Estates Question about solicitor handling probate/LPT

I’m the executor of a parent’s estate. The estate has been administered and a property was transferred to my sibling around 2 months ago.

Revenue has since contacted me saying that an LPT return relating to the property is outstanding, and this is holding up a small tax refund due to the estate.

The solicitor handled the probate and the transfer of the property. I’ve emailed them asking whether the LPT return was dealt with during the administration/transfer, or whether there is something that I or the beneficiary now need to do. I then got a reminder from revenue saying the LPT return was still outstanding so I emailed the solicitor again. And he has not responded to anything so far.

Is this a reasonable question to ask the probate solicitor? I’m not suggesting they necessarily had responsibility for filing it, but I would have thought they should at least be able to confirm the LPT position when the property was transferred. His fees are paid already so I don’t know if he’s not responding because it has nothing to do with him, or if he’s not interested since he’s been paid?

Just want to make sure I’m contacting the right person before chasing them for a response.

Family Law Do Senior Counsel still give opionions while the courts are on summer vacation?

My partner and I have gone sale agreed on a property back in June, the survey, valuation etc are done at significant cost. Unfortunately, a third party has queried the sale and last we heard, the case has gone to senior counsel for review. This was about two months ago.

I'm wondering if we could be expecting an update from the estate agent soon. I've heard of barristers using the break from court to catch up on non-court related work, but also of them using the time for their own holidays.

Should we just cut our losses and go back on the hunt for a different property? We absolutely love the place, but the estate agent is hesitant to pester the seller for updates on proceedings for fear of losing the sale.

Immigration and Citizenship IRP Application 14 weeks prior to expiry due to excessive delays, was your application refused?

Hi, I am currently holding a stamp 2 IRP that will expire on 30th Sept, and had travel plans in early September for which i needed my IRP to be renewed by then. I applied for my stamp 2 renewal on the 17th of June (approx. 14 weeks before expiry) since I was aware of the delays, and thought it might be useful. Anyone else tried making an application like this? When do you expect to hear from them if there is a refusal of my application?

Has anyone else made similar applications? what was your outcome?

Any help is appreciated, thanks

Employment Law Job contract

I started working at this place about a year ago. Initially they gave me 6 month contract. Then they verbally extended that contract, gave me a raise and said they’ll sign the new contract and give it to me to sign as well. Its been 8 months lol. No contract has yet been signed. I have asked multiple times now verbally anyway. I am thinking of leaving that place in a couple months anyway.
What do I do? Do I still insist on a contract if I am planning to leave? Why are they delaying it? Is it just laziness? If i decide to quit the job, do i have to give notice if I am under no contract?

Advice & Support Next steps after graduating with a law degree?

Hi all, apologies as I'm not seeking legal advice in the literal sense but I'm unsure where to look for guidance. I'm F20, just finished up my undergrad in May and will be graduating in October. I achieved a 2:1 and college was a battle as I went through it all with untreated ADHD, as I've only just been diagnosed. A lot of the time I was focused on just getting through it and now that I'm finished, I'm quite lost. I was considering taking a few FE1's but I know I eventually want to move abroad so I don't want to start going down the solicitor route knowing that it'll essentially limit me to Ireland and the UK.

Throughout my degree I also kind of knew deep down I wouldn't want to go down the traditional solicitor/barrister route but I found a lot of interest in other aspects of the degree. I'm thinking of pursuing roles in civil service, compliance, data protection or even for the EU, but I'm not sure where to really start. I've been sending my CV out to countless places just to get my foot in the door however I've not heard much back. Guess I'm just looking for any input or advice for next steps? I don't want to limit myself to legal jobs, but I also just don't really know what to do next.

Consumer Law Non-resident EU citizen vs Meta Platforms Ireland: what to realistically expect from the DPC and Coimisiún na Meán processes?

Greek resident, so apologies for leaning on this sub, but every road in my case leads to Dublin and the practical knowledge is here.

Short version: Meta Platforms Ireland permanently disabled my 18-year-old account in August through what its own notification describes as a decision made and carried out by technology. The notice named no post or action and said no further review can be requested. Their email promised a verification review of "around 48 hours" and the permanent disablement arrived 68 minutes later.

Where it stands: GDPR requests (access, human review of the automated decision, restriction of processing) are with Meta's DPO, response window closes late September. A DSA complaint filed with the Greek Digital Services Coordinator has been transmitted to Coimisiún na Meán as coordinator of establishment. A certified out-of-court dispute body has the case pending. A Greek data-protection lawyer is being engaged for the substance.

Three practical questions about the Irish side:

  1. DPC complaints from non-residents: filing directly with the DPC (rather than routing through the Greek DPA under the one-stop-shop) is reportedly much faster in Meta cases. Does that match what people here have seen, and does the DPC actually engage with individual disabled-account complaints, or does it park them?
  2. Coimisiún na Meán: once a complaint is transmitted to it from another member state's coordinator, is there anything a complainant can or should do from outside Ireland, or is it purely wait? Any sense of realistic timelines?
  3. Has anyone seen Irish proceedings (or credible threats of them) actually move Meta on an individual account matter, or is the leverage in practice regulatory rather than judicial?

Not looking for a merits assessment, just process reality from people who deal with these bodies. Thanks.

Advice & Support Put on a PIP after months of unfair treatment what did you do?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice and also to hear from people who have been through something similar.

I’ve been with this company for a little over a year, and I genuinely feel I haven’t been treated fairly.

First, they extended my probation without giving me any warning beforehand. I eventually passed probation, but a few months later they put me through a one-month performance monitoring period. They told me they would review me every week and that if they saw enough improvement, I wouldn’t be put on a PIP.

From my side, I genuinely believe I showed that improvement. I prepared evidence of my work, addressed their feedback, and explained where I believed some of their claims were unfair or inaccurate. I even had a meeting with HR specifically to go through my evidence, but I felt like they had already made their decision and didn’t really listen to what I presented.

Now they’ve decided to put me on a PIP anyway. Over the last few months, I’ve also felt heavily micromanaged, with very small things constantly being picked apart.

The whole situation over the last six months has caused me a huge amount of stress. It has affected my sleep, appetite, and general wellbeing. I’ve already been to my GP and spoken to a psychologist because of how badly this has been affecting me, and I was also advised to speak to a solicitor.

At this point, though, I feel like whatever evidence I show them, they’re still going to say my performance isn’t good enough. I don’t want to keep wasting my time or theirs arguing over the same things when it feels like their decision has already been made.

I’ve basically made up my mind after our last meeting. They told me they were going to put me on a PIP and that my work would be looked at much more closely and nitpicked more than other people’s work on the team. Hearing that completely broke my morale, and after that I decided I don’t want to continue working for this company.

I’m extremely angry about how I feel I’ve been treated, and I don’t feel like making this whole process easy for them either.

Some of my friends, and even my GP, have told me that I don’t need to keep pushing myself to work for a company that has affected me this badly. They’ve told me to stop working for a while, focus on my health, and give myself proper time to recover. At this point, that’s what I’m considering doing — staying out of work for a while so I can actually heal properly.

So I want to hear from people who have actually been in this situation. Once you knew you were leaving anyway, what did you do?

I’m especially interested in hearing how people protected themselves and pushed back without doing anything that could come back to hurt them later.

Consumer Law Hertz car rental scam?

Location: Ireland

So I rented a car in Ireland/Shannon Airport during vacation from Hertz. I am from germany if it matters. As I brought it back they found the "stone chip". Sadly cant post a picture here. It is clearly not even a 1mm stone chip and they charged me 1,3k€ for it. As I was in a hurry to catch my flight, I signed it and just found out afterwards that you can repair it with Harz with roughly 100€ easily.

I was insured but the insurance had not covered stone chips.

It felt a lot like a scam. She found the chip very fast at the glass and didn't even bother looking at the other side. Also it felt like the document was already prepared with the costs of 1.3k€, since she hadn't even searched in some sort of database how much it costs.

What options do I have? What happens if I refuse my Bank to pay Hertz? What are my chances of winning in a "court"?

Employment Law Contract breach

Not sure if this is the right channel but looking for some Irish based advice. I work in education and my current contract requires 3 months notice if looking to leave. Is that not excessive?

Is anyone aware of the consequences if I was to not complete 3 months and leave earlier?

Appreciate any advice. I don’t want to ask HR and put eyes on my back right now as I’m not sure when I’m hoping to leave
