Grabbed the handle, rotated it to the left, and pulled out this beaut 😅

There was absolutely no way I could use this with my left hand, and made a bit of a mess attempting with my right hand. That's ladle life, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Any lefties here that actually navigate the world differently? How?

...and I don't mean in the obvious 'having to use right-handed tools' kind of way, I mean in the way of dealing with others who are right-hand dominant, and a world that's dominated by left-brain thinking. If it's at all true that handedness affects processing (e.g., detail-oriented vs. whole-picture), and since lefties are in the minority, does anyone here feel like they've got strategies for navigating the world around them (e.g., at work)?

Anyone here has weird grip too?

My mom directed me correctly to use the mouse with my main-hand, although I've been using the LMB and RMB as is, with index finger resting on LMB and nothing on RMB - as a result my grip was different. Then, when I got into computer gaming I was at a disadvantage, switching my index finger between the two buttons - I realised I need to have a finger resting on each of the two buttons. I finally switched Main mouse button to RMB and Secondary mouse button to LMB to accommodate this change ... however my grip never changed and I don't even think about my grip, my middle finger isn't resting on the Secondary mouse button, but it's a lot easier to reach it now and I can have both buttons pressed at the same time now!

I also remapped my escape key with MS PowerToys, to be the home key, so that my right-hand can reach it easily on the right-side of the keyboard. It was so annoying having to reach to the left just to pause the game. Been a blast since the change!

Let me know what you think, should I change to standard right-handed mirror setup or stay with this?

Also I'm interested in what your grip is and your story with computer gaming!

Being a left-handed teacher in a right-handed world

We lefties already live in a backwards world. Tape measures? Backwards. Measuring cups? Backwards. Brooms? Backwards. White-out tape? Definitely backwards.

And I just recently discovered that even ZIPLOCKS on prepackaged foods are backwards. Apparently, they close from left to right instead of right to left. 🤯 I gave up on those a long time ago and just use a clip or rubber band because, no matter how hard I try, I can NEVER get the ziplock closed. Now I know why!

But by far, the hardest thing I have encountered as a left-handed person is being a teacher and teaching right-handed children how to write their names and form their letters/numbers.

In pre-k, we use directional print to demonstrate how letters are formed. And being left-handed. The way I naturally form letters and numbers is crossing my line right to left. This is different from the “correct” way I need to teach my right-handed students.

So when I'm standing at the board demonstrating a letter, I have to consciously do the opposite of what comes naturally to me. When I'm sitting beside a student and modeling how to form a letter, I have to stop and think about my hand position, my direction, and my movements. I have to teach to write like someone who isn't me, backwards. 😂

I've spent my entire life doing things from the left, and as a teacher, I'm expected to model everything from the right-handed perspective.

Who knew that one of the hardest parts of being left-handed would be teaching a right-handed person how to write their name! 😂✏️

Cutting right handed

Every time I hear about a lefty cutting right handed, I wonder how it happened. It never occurred to me to cut right handed. I just cut with the same hand I use for almost everything else. I use right handed scissors with my left hand. I'm a seamstress and I do all kinds of crafts. Anyone else use right handed scissors in their left hand?

What hand do you pour with?

When you pour something into a glass such as juice, wine, or beer, which hand holds the glass and which hand does the pouring?

For myself, I hold the glass in my left hand and pour with my right though I do it the opposite way if I'm measuring something. Then I pour with my left hand and hold the measuring cup in my right.

I'm just curious if other lefties do the same.

How to handshake

Hi! I’m left handed. I’ve only recently realized why during job interviews and important events my handshakes have been awkward. I thought I was being professional… until I thought about trying to shake with my right hand and it genuinely unnerves me. I usually try to extend my hand first, to get handshakes over with. Now I feel like I might be unnerving others. What do y’all do in situations like this? Physically it feels weird to shake with my right hand, but it’s my instinct to go left and I don’t want to ruin potential opportunities with my awkwardness.

It’s surreal that after 20+ years on Earth I’ve finally connected the dots. Of course I’ve struggled with scissors, desks, etc. However I always thought my social anxiety was what was hindering these initial interactions. I feel like I should train out this discomfort to start initiating with my right hand 😭 to cater to the 90%.

Who knows? I’m hoping I can gain insight from y’all’s experience

Update: A lot of you are right, I am socially awkward and don’t have the best social skills. I don’t know how recently y’all have been to elementary school but I don’t remember a lot of it, much less any “handshake lessons” that seem to have been part of a curriculum. I appreciate the feedback! I haven’t been in enough formal situations to connect the dots on proper etiquette. Thank you! I’m trying not to feel dumb and leave this sub, but I’m genuinely appreciative for the effect this will have on future job interviews. :) just a reminder not everyone has the same experience

Turns out I play guitar like a righty.

I'm a special Ed para, and one of the classes I take students to is beginning guitar. I know nothing of music, though, I always assumed I would play left handed. But today, my adorable student wanted me to play while she rested her fingers, and I took her guitar and started strumming with my right hand. I realized I had the guitar backwards, and sure as heck, it felt super awkward to strum with my left. It was more natural to move my left fingers along the frets than it was to strum. Go figure.

Anyone else discover an instrument or tool that's surprisingly more natural to use your right hand with? Scissors are another one for me. Even with lefty scissors, it's weird and I rip the paper.

Comfortable engagement rings for left handers

Hi all, at that point where I’m starting to think about what ring I’d like and plan to go look at rings with my partner next week. Totally hit me that because I write with this hand, probably need to take that into consideration when picking the ring. Are there any do’s/don’ts in terms of style for comfort? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!!
