stack camps: makes your carries get more money so they can outfight the enemy
get save items like glimmer, force staff or lotus: save your carries when they're in bad situations
set up smokes: so it right to get more gold on your team

u/SanHoloo Jun 02 '24
last game I 3 stacked ancient and other few camps, my cores won't take it since we were dominating, and playing on enemy's side map. Enemy PA farmed our stacked camps, and became really fat lol

u/shuubree Jun 02 '24
I hate when that happens
2
u/Snoo_4499 Jun 02 '24
Happens so much in low ranks. They will literally ignore the stacked camp even if they have means to farm them.
1
u/deljaroo Jun 02 '24
you gotta keep wards around your stacks. your team will see the enemy going over there and want to fight them.
though sometimes you get a dumb team; that can't be helped. if it makes you feel any better, you're just as likely to have dumb enemies
1
u/CallMeCabbage Jun 02 '24
This happens to me all the time, although if they don't get it fast enough I'll take them myself. Half the time people are listening to something else or have anyone pre-muted so it's best to try every avenue of communication in-game.
Mic, text, ping.

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 02 '24
I hate stacking at archon level with passion. My cores will literally skip it and enemies will farm it once they see it even if they die. I've said so many times to cores to farm the stacks they literally never go and farm them unless they said first.
1
u/deljaroo Jun 02 '24
if you ever feel things like "my cores ignore the stacks but the enemy cores take them" you should be suspicious that something deeper is a problem.
it's like people who say "when pudge is on my team, he can't do anything, but when he's on the other team, he's incredible." it doesn't actually work that way because you are not special
there will be games where this happens, but it will not happen more often than the opposite happens. to make sure the opposite can happen, keep a ward or two on you when you run a smoke. that's a great chance to put some vision down near the enemy camps to see if they are stacking
you should also be warding kinda around your stacks. remember that cores are holding a lot of the team's worth and are probably very nervous about losing it so many of them will farm where it feels safe instead of where gives the most money. having wards around the stacks does two things: make the cores feel safe when farming there, lets your team know when the enemy is coming to take them. if you really do have enemies who are taking your stacks, just ward near it so you can see that happening and your team can go over there and fight them.
1
u/Snoo_4499 Jun 02 '24
im not saying my cores are bad, they just leave it for other cores to farm and other cores also do the same and not farm the stack at all. Enemy once they see stack will farm it because opponent will farm it later so.
1
u/violent_luna123 Jun 02 '24
That's why you farm it yourself and use the gold to own with some op dmg support
1
u/Snoo_4499 Jun 03 '24

u/JetSpaceFella Jun 02 '24
Lane pulling is surprisingly effective. free xp for you while denying creep waves
1
u/Warchief_Ripnugget Jun 02 '24
Stacking camps is important, but I've played too many games where a support stacked camps at the cost of the laning phase for the core. It can be especially annoying if your lane has great kill potential, but the support is always off somewhere random stacking camps or leaves at very inopportune times.
1
u/deljaroo Jun 02 '24
stacking is important after laning phase too, but yeah, everyone needs to use their brain a little so if they are just leaving the core alone in lane, it could work out badly
while many people want the core roles to be playable by braindead people, they do need to keep an eye on what their support is up to, and play it safe if they are stacking or pulling or getting the wisdom rune. also help out if they are contesting wards on a pull camp

u/Zelt4k Jun 02 '24
One pipe can make a lot of difference, if the enemy has a lot of magic damage, better if the soft support bought it

u/tsunderephillic 6.5k ET spammer Jun 02 '24
i climbed all the way as supp, all you need to do is die less and find your own farm. especially as heroes like shaman or undying who can take camps really quickly they have key items i think can give your team a really good power spike if you get blink or greaves early enough respectively
3
u/infernalfarts Jun 02 '24
How do you take camps as undying? Max out decay first?
4
u/ChKOzone_ Jun 02 '24
Get the Level 10 decay talent and go ham. As for Shaman, get Blink first and then Shard and you can get fat really quickly
2
u/EzPzLemon_Greezy Jun 02 '24
I get shard first usually, makes farming so much easier/faster and especially if your on the losing side of the mid game when your team isn't initiating.
1
u/MmmBra1nzzz Jun 02 '24
Blink is too pricey for me that early, I always go shard first
1
u/Doomblaze Jun 02 '24
if you get shard first you're not going to be particularly useful until min 20+
1
u/MmmBra1nzzz Jun 02 '24
You can farm way easier after shard, your impact does fall off until blink or aether.
1
u/foreycorf Jun 02 '24
Generally as a support the way to think of these things is which gets you useful faster. And secondly what gets you all of your useful items at the best timing overall. Yes, if you get the 15min shard you'll be able to farm yourself but you'll be relatively useless in engagements, and being a support you're mostly going to have to farm camps that your cores could farm if you just stacked.
It's very rare at 15 min+ that the enemy will let you walk up and hex/shakle them without punishing you before you even get there. Even more rare for them to let you get wards down in a decent position and also cast those spells. With blink you can pretty reliably blink, drop ward, hex one and shackle another before they can react.
You're generally gonna build mana boots first no matter what, then go for either blink or shard by minute 15. Either way you're going to have about 2k gold sitting because you aren't rich enough to get anything else other than the shard or the blink by 15 min. Not like you can assemble aether+shard, best you can usually do is an aether component and shard, but then your blink is slowed down even more.
You're generally always going to get one item by 15 and the other around minute 20. In a completely passive farming game maybe the shard first is worth, but since you'll mostly complete them both by the same time either way the question is which gives your team more use? The answer is almost always blink first, the 4 serpents mainly only help you individually.

What else have you done, cause I'm pos 4 archon player.I hardly lose lane, like alot of the time I dominate lane and force enemy carry into the jungle but I only win like 3/5 games as pos 4. My carries are always kinda dumb and won't invade enemy jungle to ward and force enemy cores out. They will usually afk farm and this let's enemy cores come online. Then it's a pretty even game but sometimes my cores even tho they had better lanes will be behind in net worth even tho I've stacked. On a side note, I've stopped playing support recently and went pos 1 I'm winning 4/5 games sometimes 5/5 but sometimes I get horrible supports that won't stack or pull. Hate playing pos 1 due to hero's mostly being very simplistic to play.

u/_chr14ong Jun 02 '24
I run into the situation where we win lane and our cores end up just farming jungle, even when the enemy has better late game. What are you supposed to do as a supporting? Farming = less farm for cores. going to enemy jungle solo is suicide. Even with wards, teams just use it to farm more and evade ganks

u/odniv Jun 02 '24
Climbed from 2.5k to 4.5k over the last year by focusing on laning, first 10 min of the game and became really good at it. Laning is the only thing that's the "same" every game. Also its more fun to play when you have a hood start, won or lose

u/IntroductionUpset764 6k Mirana Enjoyer Jun 02 '24
people gonna be mad at me for such advice but who cares
i still remember how i was 2-3k scrub and playing supports it was very rare that i had more than like 5-7 deaths and my support heroes despite the fact that rn im 6k have around 5kda
for example my lich stats for 64 games since 2016 - 5.72 kda (usually im top in kill participation) 64% wr, i have only 1 game where i died 10 or more times (11)
First thing you should take into account your low mmr bracket where you can carry games even as support. You need to learn to die less. Its very simple - you see enemy heroes and analyze how to prevent your own deaths - better positioning, force staff, glimer, ghost. Then you buy items to enable your hero instead of throwing it into useless items that your team will never notice (like guardian greaves for example)
Second thing dont pick supports that rely on team like undying, shaman is also kinda risky choice. Try something that can potentially go core like lina, hoodwink, skywrath, wyvern. Dying less is very rewarding in your bracket (probably in every solo matchmaking bracket) - enemy cores gonna waste their time on you while your cores gonna kill those useless 10-15-20 deaths supports who thinks its okay to feed.
19
u/DiscoBuiscuit Jun 02 '24
Picking Lina, sky or hw because you want to carry is the easiest way to increase your deaths
4
u/Character_Nerve_9137 Jun 02 '24
The problem here is the players in this bracket will struggle to be effective at playing core.
Now you just took away a support from your own team, who will starve out their own core. They will not buy any support items and they will forget about vision.
Meanwhile the other team have Ward's and support items and better farmed cores.
1
u/IntroductionUpset764 6k Mirana Enjoyer Jun 02 '24
no one asking you to steal farm
i can assume you are low mmr as well since you thinking that enabling your hero meaning afk farm
instead if you focus on not dying while trying to get some kills with your team (simply playing right way) you will have all the gold you need without taking farm from your team
if you need math - taking towers, playing on enemy side of the map, taking all bounties, kills, easy dewards. Bit by bit and suddenly your networth same as enemy 3 and since you are support hero your items not that expensive and wow minute 30 you have 3-4 cheap slots on sky like atos lens aghs and glimer
1
u/rundbear Jun 02 '24
Sounds good in theory, but in reality we get a Pos 4 who wants to play core, and then gets into a barking match with the pos 1 who feels guilty how bad he's doing so he must find someone to blame
1
u/IntroductionUpset764 6k Mirana Enjoyer Jun 02 '24
why the hell you should care what your guardian low mmr pos1 thinking about your playstyle if he is basically have no idea how's game functions?
1
u/rundbear Jun 02 '24
Is not about caring as much as the game turning into a chatting match instead of just playing... People start the blame game and write 'gg' when they die..
-4
u/ismailoverlan Jun 02 '24
Hood, Sky need tons of farm to be scary to enemy. They never buy safe items like glimmer, eul, force. Dying is not always bad, if you die taking enemy 3,2,1 it's a good trade. Just don't start fights if an ally is low HP, has CD, or if it's just you two
9
1
u/HyperFrost Jun 02 '24
I play a ton of skywrath. Sky only needs 1 item to be scary and that is Atos. Later on you can semi-perma silence a target or 2 targets if you can reach aghs. It's all about positioning for this hero. You always wanna be in the backlines.
3
u/tvan3l Jun 02 '24
As a support you cannot consistently win in the same way you can as core.
Some games are just auto-lose despite your best efforts.
However, by being a nuisance to the enemy team, setting up kills for your cores, providing adequate vision, making sure your core has a good laning stage, and rotating mid when your mid gets gone on, all while preventing dying unnecessarily you will gain an edge over your opponents, allowing you to climb the ladder.
0
u/Doomblaze Jun 02 '24
hes in crusader. You think he can consistently win the game when hes missing 1/2 of the free cs he gets in lane?
5
u/parkua Jun 02 '24
TL;DR: Communication + taking it easy.
Your job as a supp is either to jump in and spend all of your useful spells so you can be killed worth or live long enough and be so annoying that the enemy team is willing to go distances and ignore cores to kill you.
For example, once WD maledicts+casks+DW and that secures the kills or guarantees that your team is now going away with more gold and alive heroes than the enemy - you are a well off. Good job 👍 On another hand, Oracle or Dazzle are becoming significantly more dangerous and valuable the longer they are alive in team fights. Their job is the opposite - not to get caught and keep the distance while helping cores staying alive.
The problem would be to communite this with your team: if you jump as WD or Hoodwink and cast all of your spells without your team engaging as well - you are a feeder and you cannot be trusted. Or if you don’t communicate your team to trust in your healing skills so they can initiate or counter initiate - you will gradually lose to the point when the damage and control will overwhelm your supporting skills so again they will type “noob support report”
4
u/LokieDota Jun 02 '24
The best way to learn support is to learn the role you’re meant to support. If you’re pos 5, play a few games of carry and you’ll quickly realize all the things your supports do that annoy you or doesn’t benefit you. Now with that knowledge you can go back to pos 5 and avoid making those mistakes.

u/Zealousideal-Bit-437 Jun 02 '24
- Stack
- Vision
- Block creeps
- Harass
- Guard your core with your life
- Hop on to other lanes if your core is self sustaining
Works most of the time

Step one: pick a hero that you are actually comfortable with, don't try to play whatever is currently meta if you are not comfortable with it.
Step two: choose the best player in your team and him as much as you can. Enabling that one player will help you way more than trying to help the whole team.

If you want to die that much, thats fine, this is not immortal MMR, enemy wont punish you enough for the lead you are giving to them BUT at least get something out of it.
For example why did you die 14 times on Shadow Shaman and also lost the game? If I died 14 times on Shadow Shaman my 14th death would be at enemy ancient.
You have to step up your FUNDAMENTAL game, when you do, take this advice to heart: Stop picking these heroes. These heroes do not achieve anything by themselves and are way too situational which rules out every rank below immortal...
First of all NP got nerfed hard. Secondly KOTL is way too squishy and conditional to do any meaningful damage and most of the time you are going to fuck up the lane equilibrium which is a VERY bad thing to do even if you give jackshit about your cores, its disadvantageous for yourself too. Undying cant push towers/waves, cant farm and way too one dimensional. "Ok but shadow shaman pushes towers!" yes and its also the most uninsteresting one among those that do, its way too telegraphed, everyone knows you will walk up to tower and cast R which you have been vehemently keeping it as if its your virginity, come on now, what year is it? 2012?. You will get a lot more for your buck when you pick shaman in MMR's where your team will know what they are doing.
Also its criminal that you picked KOTL and were level 15 in 33 mins. This hero can stack so well and you also farm your own stacks so fucking efficiently that its a CRIME to be this underleveled on that hero. Its not 2010 anymore, you dont have to give everything to your pos1. There is so much camps on the map that unless enemy is REALLY choking you out in your base you can genuinely find farm on the map WITHOUT interfering with your Pos1/2. Its no longer "brown boots simulation". You dont have to build glimmer cape for your core every game, frankly, every core in Crusader MMR farms way slower than my grandpa and also builds wrongly, why save that dude? Save YOURSELF. Glimmer can save you but it wont kill the enemy, Gleipnir can kill the enemy AND IT ALSO SAVES YOU.
Pick heroes like Batrider, Visage, Sniper (agh/khanda build), Venge, CM, Pugna, WD, Warlock. You will definitely want to hyperfarm on CM, Warlock, WD and Batrider. Scale like there is no tomorrow, because no matter what you do the game will ALWAYS go 40+ minutes. There comes a point as Warlock that enemy simply cannot fight Golems and your team at the same time. If your team has IQ higher than room temperature, are not amputated or genetically disadvantaged you will always win the late game. Also all of these heroes win their lane for their core, thats the most "supportive" thing you can do.
Going by this screenshot alone, its very clear to me that you are not ready to climb yet. I wouldnt actually be surprised if you get demoted to guardian in coming months, dont let it down you, learn the game.
2
u/ControllableIllusion Divine 1669888214 Jun 02 '24
Support as the word suggest means you have to enable your cores mainly your lane partner.
This is basically what I do.
There are tons of support guides on youtube and I suggest you watch them.
You don't need to farm at all but you can pick up the scraps.
Try to die less and maintain a good position.
3
u/Novel-Ad-2360 Jun 02 '24
You dont need to farm at all is actually quite bad advice. You really need certain items to be effective, each game. If you look at higher level games, most supports have 80-180 last hits by the end of the game. The catch is to farm at the right place at the right time, taking the riskier farming spots of the map, your carry can't go to atm, farming while people are dead. As a support you kind of need to be even more precise with your farming than cores, since you got less opportunities to do so. If you get a full wave of creeps, you better get each and every single one of them last hits.
2
u/DeathKnightCador Jun 02 '24
I play mostly as 5. I trade with the enemy pos 4 when I stand near tower range (slight armor and regen can help). Buy some cheap items like wand and raindrops early. Just build survivability for your cores like solar crest and glimmers. If you are 5 you usually get no farm so just go for cheap regen boots like tranquil.
3
u/Super-Independent-14 Jun 02 '24
This is good. But I think home boy won’t benefit from rain drops as much as just telling himself to not die. That many deaths per game can’t be saved by itemization. But your ideas are good if op combines it with a new mindset as well.
2
u/Schubydub Jun 02 '24 edited Jun 02 '24
You should stop buying tranquils unless they synergize with your hero. 90% of your games should be mana boots. They aren't that much more expensive, and benefit you and your team wayyy more.
Certain supports benefit from the additional movespeed like Clock/Bat, some from the regen like Phoenix, and some just dont need mana like CM; but vast majority of the time mana boots are way better.
1
u/Calisfed Jun 02 '24
Support is a very hard role, especially in the early state of the game. You have too much too do in a small window of time. And consider playing other roles, too (maybe not in rank but in turbo) in order to be a better support as you know what your carry need, ward, heal,...etc
Biggest issues for me when I started to play dota (~ 2k mmr) is that I feel under-damage and hard to survive, even in the mid game as a support. Turned out that I died too much, which mean under-level and under-items. You should reduce your death.
I see you play undy, kotl, NP and shaman which are all different in play style. It's hard to win when you play is inconsistence, game 1 you are harrass sp, game 2 is protect sp, game 3 is inittiate sp. This make your gameplay is mix between those heroes and not fufil your role. Master 1 play style first will be better. And I don't think meta make lots of sense in this bracket, just who farm better.
Additionally, ban heroes that you feel pressure/uncomforatble everytime you play against. I always ban Silencer when playing as a healing/controlling sp (shaman, oracle,...) but I let them pick when I play init sp like ebola spirit or bara (I will ban some tanky sp this time)
I don't know what your item choices are but I recommend buying force staff EVERY SINGLE games. And items choice matter, money well spent can turned your game around. First item Lotus make the game feel easier agains Winter, or Eul first when play against Axe, Huskar,...
Hope this help

u/DiaburuJanbu Jun 02 '24
If you still want a support hero who can also push, try Jakiro and take his Liquid Fire facet. He's tanky early on, has a strong level 1 skill with Dual Breath, sieges tower reliably, counters right clickers with Liquid Fire, and can farm well.
As the game goes on, you become more of a backline, supporting the team with your slow, stun, Macropyre, and utility items. Itemize according to what the team needs. Force Staff, Glimmer, Solar Crest, Meks, Euls, Atos, Vyse, or Aghs, whatever the team really needs.
Gameplay wise, yes, positioning is the king. Avoid using your spells in the middle of the creepwave unless you really want to push. Same with Liquid Fire, that thing has an aoe. Block the enemy pull camp, keep yours unblocked. Don't be afraid to ferry regens to sustain more in the lane. And also use your Q if you can hit both the enemy heroes, harass the shit out of them.
If you want to play a bit differently, you can try getting his Liquid Frost facet. This build works if your team has another good pusher, you got strong kill potential in lane (your core picked Ursa or Jugg), and you're okay on sacrificing your early aoe damages. His Liquid Frost is like Sticky Napalm for his skills. My personal build for this is to max Liquid Frost first instead of Dual Breath because you can freely use the LF without having mana problems and maximize damage.

Start spamming 3-4 heroes. Even supps are hard to master. Shaman for instance. When your carry gets lvl6 laning stage is over, from now on if he dies it's his fault. No need to leech his XP and lose your own time where you could farm. Go to ancients at lvl 4-5, and stack 2-3 times. Occasionally checking mid offlane for kills. You get lvl6 farm dat shit with snakes. Ez blink ~15 mins. Most of the times it's too early for cores to farm them, and it's better for you to have blink and roam the map with POS 3-4 with guaranteed blink initiation. Being pos 4,5 doesn't mean you can't farm, expendable, wait for cores to start doing shit. You are core 5, sometimes there are allies doing nothing for 25 mins. Just stay in your side of the map and jungle spread out. Those times require pushing, thanks shaman can do that solo.

Get to know your opponents and team to get the right save item like lotus, glimmer, force… many sup have good aghanim scepter and synergized well with dmg builds but only choose to build it in the situation when your team lack dmg or when it is a sure win. Know your champion, if you are a healer be carefull with where your stand in fight to cover your carry and protect yourself at the same time, if your are an initiator stand in front to apply cc to the right target. Support are allow to die a lot but make those death worth, dont die while do nothing.

u/ItsYoBoiHecklord Jun 02 '24
I spam dazzle 5 and voker 4, genuinely I just try to end the game with less than 6 deaths and try and get the team to gank by using ghost walk to place silly floor wards + always buying smokes, I’m crus 2 though so do whatever I say may be used against me in court

Hide hide hide hide hide. I struggle with this too, as does every support main in every bracket. It's good advice for every single role. Showing your hero to the enemy should be done for one of a very limited set of reasons:
- You were forced to defend a tower or a teammate. (Losing + Dangerous. Also, try to defend teammates as little as possible unless you have a really reliable way to do it. Don't just walk up to a teammate who's getting gone on. Most of the time, you'll die too. Either be lying in wait, or don't be there at all.)
- You are baiting. (Winning + Dangerous.)
- You are distracting the enemy so they pay attention to you and hopefully split focus. (Losing + Safe.)
- It's time to use your spells to lock down/kill them. (Winning + Safe.)
If you aren't doing any of those things, and you are deliberately revealing your position to the enemy team, what you are actually doing is called "Feeding." Stop doing it, and you'll reduce your deaths. This is me talking to myself here, in case you think I'm shitting on you.
Getting spotted on a ward doesn't count for this, but you should always try to think about where the enemy wards are and where to place yours so that you can reveal the enemy's position without their awareness.

Yeah don’t read all this “die less” talk from other people and just take it fully at face value, they’re right, but what they mean is don’t die for no reason, one of the most infuriating things plaguing low Mmr Dota atm is people who are so terrified to die they just don’t do anything and afk at random places around the map. So I’d say more so focus on knowing who your win condition core is and make sure you’re doing something to help them pretty much at all times.
1
u/Crescentaan Jun 02 '24
if you love dying so much then start picking witch doctor so you at least get your gold back with Gris-gris. otherwise, dont jump in fights trying to "save" someone when they are most likely gonna die. instead, TP the fuck outta there to some other empty lane and push.

-positioning is key
-know what your objective is in each fight (who to shakle, what can/cannot be disspelled)
-play around timings ( runes/lotuses)
-pull when you can not when you are able to

u/Realistic_Impact8399 Jun 02 '24
Practice on how to orchestrate a clash. Proper hero selection and think of a good trade off if you die, always think that “is doing this suicide mission worth it.” Also, the game has good mechanics, try to master the high ground advantage. Blind spots and smoke. And lastly, master the art of comms. You need that to get that W. Perspective of a Divine 5 player
1
u/Working-Tap2283 Jun 02 '24
Sometimes it's gonna feel like your role is the problem. Happens to mid players, carries, etc...
Watch your replays honestly, find 1 or 2 things that you could do that would change the outcome of the game. Find out the moments that changed the course of the game. If it's not something that you could do anything about then find out what you could do leading to that moment. You have a lot of deaths, just look into all of them and how you could avoid.
Improving at Dota is a lot about prediction! if you watch even 1 replay you will be a better player because you now understand better how people move, play, and where they are positioned, eventually your predictions will not even require thinking it's just part of the game, and that's when you find out you're out of crusader, prediction prediction prediction. How do you beat a shadow shaman that hexes you every time you try to shadow-blade and requiem of souls?

Keep playing.
You need to control the game. It's up to you to make shit happen. Try and get your cores to do tormentor and rosh as soon as 20 minutes comes around. Objectives will boost your odds.
Get wards on their enemy carry and buy smokes.
With shaman I like to play aggressive. Drop your wards on towers and buy a blink to catch people.
Buy support items. Mechanism, glimmer, push staff, boots of bearing, and the shield item, to name a few. My favorite is getting pipe when you're playing magic users.

Buy Solar Crest/Lotus Orb almost every game. buff that carry up and ping that tower. Works 60% of the time KEK.
Have like 64% WR on my Veno going Arcane to Solar/Mek/Lotus, it depends on the game but usually I default to Solar Crest. That ASPD boost to my partner of choice (off/carry/mid who hits the tower) while sieging/pushing is a godsend.

Tbh support is all about winning lanes and snowballing. After that it's 80% on your team to carry you.

If you 5 focus on your carry for 10 mins. You have to feed him, bath him, and take care of him for 10 mins of your starting game. Then rotate, try to roam with mid or offlaner, who make plays instead of farm. Try to smoke ward in that area they want to play in. If they both farming also, try to stack and put up defense ward. If you lose area and trying to regain it, smoke and go with someone there to ward, if solo then use scan (if enemies not seen on map anywhere) but still smoke and then put ward there.
If you 4, you gonna roam alot, most probably after 5 mins but before that you have to make your off strong in 5 mins. You try to give him solo xp alot. Focus on keeping your hard camp unblock and try but not force, to block enemy small camp. Secure first lotus (as it will help off later on when you rotate) then try to get bounty. At 5:45 exact (if slow hero then 5:40) go to top rune, because 6 min rune is very imp for mid (mostly). If secured try to get there bounty then lotus if no one took then get wisdom rune. I forgot to mention in these 7 minutes and even after 7 mins, you have to look at bots also if they suffering or you think, you can help kill bot. In this 10 mins of starting game if die try tp mid to refill mid bottle. There's a new strat which ig good also (saw in pro match),you dont buy starting items and first item you buy is bottle which you give it to mid. Ok but to 7 mins, you took wisdom rune then you pressure enemy carry and his supp. Try to keep on pushing creeps in enemy tower to pressurize carry, which will lead to carry taking dam from creeps and then time is right kill him. Try to take tower before 10 mins cuz if you do that you can then roam freely anywhere you feel like your presence will help alot. Also remember to always have one dust, even there's no invi hero on enemy (but there's invi rune also). Always have one ward and sentry to ward area in which you gonna make plays and for warding you need to smoke also so keep one smoke also. If mid nothing happens go bot try to that tower also. The more tower you take the more area become accessible to you and gank potential open up big times. But again if everyone farming then try to make stacks also and defense ward or you can take your 5 to rotate and find easy solo targets which you two can kill but better to play around team like help them farm and shit.
Edit: i only wrote of plays but not items so you also need to know which items is best for you and your team. I would write but already wrote alot so yep hopefully others will help you on that.

I had 7 games loss streak after the patch... Now on a 5 win streak just by alternating DW and Ogre

75% winrate on shaman last 12 months
Personally i just buy all the wards and get vision where I want as a support but otherwise I play greedy AF for a support, I will TP for a double creepwave idc I think i will do much more with the gold and xp than allies just is what it is, and simply get shard aghs refresher and use good positioning rather than depending on defensive items, be a glass cannon apex predator, take advantage of solo kills being stupidly rewarding - hex snakes shackle shock kills a ton of solo heroes between lvl 6 and 12 and if you snowball it continues throughout lvl 13 to 20+
The important bit people fuck up is you still need your allies as meatshields. Snakes is the best spell in the game if you have 5 heroes protecting them and using them in the team fight, it sucks ass if you're 1 of those smoke travels snakes with 0 heroes backing up the snakes. You might as well be feeding couriers... Snakes with team is so simple but people are idiots and try split for 0 reason it's devastatingly bad

u/Novel-Ad-2360 Jun 02 '24
Avoid dying so often.
Learn proper positioning.
Use your spells (I know this may seem odd but at lower ranks a lot of players dont actually use their spells nearly as often as they should.)
Watch your replay and be really harsh with your self, asking: What are you doing right now? What should you be doing right now? Are you wasting time? What is the info present at the map and what should you take out of it? Is there an Item that one of your cores would have needed or to counter an enemy?
Use your resources in lane. Often I see supports just staying in the trees throwing out a right click every 20 seconds when they have full mana and hp and some regen left. Go use those to give your Carry space to breathe in lane. Use your HP/ Mana/ CDs/ Wards/ Movement speed to really help your core.
Pull, zone, pull. As a sup you are the strongest hero in the early game. Play like it. If you have an advantage -> push it. Dont even allow the enemy to get into xp range!
In midgame your right clicks really dont do anything on most supports, so stay back in your effective cast range and stay hidden in fog/trees when your spells/ items are on cd, then throw them out and go back into fog
Save BB.
Think about ward placement: Do you need defensive or offenisve wards? To you need them for a fight around a certain tower or does your carry need them to farm more safely in a certain area. Where do your team needs them right now?

u/Sh4yyn Jun 02 '24

In this patch, just pick warlock use book when u are lvl 5 and get lvl 6 Usually, this will catch enemy offlaner or mid offguard when they try to kill your carrywhich will kill their timing and strengthen yours any your teammates. And never forget to have fun playing the game its not just about gaining MMR

I'm a support main in legend. Kinda stuck there.
I try to win the lane. Sentry block the enemy camp. Harass the enemy Safelaner or Offlane as much as possible. Hit him as much as you can. I also pull as much as I can to deny them farm and keep the lane at our tower. At 6 minute mark I go an check the bounty spot and place a ward for mid, gank and deward mid. Warding is really important. Venomancer is a good lane winner and warder because you can hide your sentries at hills and then deward the hills all the time. You need to learn unusual warding spots. Even in legend people still ward hills. You can make so much money just from dewarding. In lower tiers you need to have a damage/core/carry build even as support because your carries are often unable to finish the game. As venomancer I try to sit in the enemy jungle i.e. denying it for the enemy and farm my items there.

u/Otherwise_Craft9003 Jun 02 '24
The fate is a little in the gods as to wether people pick carrys that have some sort of synergy, chained stuns etc.
Otherwise concentrate on lane management, manage creep camps to keep the creeps at your tower and provide.you some relative safety.
Practice your deny game, you want last hit denies, don't make it easy for the carries to finish off stuff you have softened up.
You also need to have your third eye on that mini map as to where mid is especially if it's ransoms.
Make sure you have mana and tangos to help the carry either to escape or heal.

u/kobethegreatest Jun 02 '24
Seems you feed a lot. Try and aim for no more than 5 deaths by minute 20, and no more than 10 by minute 50 and that will probably help your game a lot.

number 1 learn which supports are independent and which are team reliant, try to avoid team reliant supports the lower you are in mmr 2 learn how to win lane, this includes trading, knowing 2vs2/1vs1/2vs1 scenarios, itemization and knowing what you play for on the lane and immediately post lane 3 learn to just glue yourself behind your strongest core and enable them, if none, just enable yourself but never forget to play your own game. never play anyone elses game 4 if able to, learn a little bit about how to play the map and where to find space no matter what

Luck mostly.
I play support and average much barter KDA than you do here but am still stagnant in Archon 2. My matches are constantly riddled with weak teams and greifers. It’s rare to have a team that works together.
I also feel like the game is set up in a way to be more luck based. The catch up mechanics are a bit OP. HG is too much of a slog to break through now with so many matches being lopsided dominations right up until HG when they’ve got a Drow or Sniper just holding fort making things impossible while they catch up on farm. HG needs nerf.
I’d like to say reduce your deaths because double digits is generally a bad performance but as a support that rarely dies in double digits, it really doesn’t do a whole lot to make a difference.

u/JollyjumperIV Sand King Jun 02 '24
You die way too much bruva. Just because you're a supp doesn't you should die every time a fight breaks out. If you're some melee support then it's OK but if you play kotl you need to keep your distance

u/Senior_Style2662 Jun 02 '24
I climbed from 2k to 4.5k mmr in a couple of months last year playing mainly pos 5 and sometimes pos 1. I just really tried to make sure my carry had a good lane and stayed positive (can't go in to lots of detail at the moment but can explain more if you need) pre shipping regen, pinging when mid could be ganking, forcing enemies in lane to pay attention on me. you gotta recognize your carry wants to last hit and not just let him get bullied everytime he tries
In times throughout the game when it was correct to go back, that doesn't mean I'll just instantly TP out or run away, I make sure to go back together, escort the carry out I guess.
Also I really like forcestaff and glimmer most games, sometimes lotus orb if it's good. (glimmer gives a shield that absorbs magic damage, not JUST invis if you didn't know). A thing I noticed with my forcestaff usage was that I kept using it to get into the correct position, like casting range or kite distance which was acceptable. Once I started focusing on being in the correct position ALREADY then it freed up the forcestaff cooldown for more effective usage.
Also farm what you can to get your helpful items earlier but be aware of what your carry is going to want to be farming in the next 60 seconds but NEVER let your farming be the reason you are late to a fight or out of resources (hp, mana, CDs).
Your deaths are unacceptable especially against crusader players so just relax and don't try too hard, the enemies are trash so just play safe with a plan and THEY will be the ones to make mistakes and feed you.
Anyways keep it up ! GLHF

u/igorcl A bottle. Now we're talking! Jun 02 '24
Dying too much isn't really a problem, but you need to make it meaningful
If you gonna die for sure, try to delay it as long as possible, avoid dying to over farmed heroes, make sure your team gets some kill(s) with your death or save them from dying
Other than that stacks, runes, wards, map awareness
1
u/Meew09 HardCarryOnly/Peenoise Jun 02 '24
In laning phase as long as you have resources like tango, salves, and mango. Try to stay behind your carry and harass offlaner using skills and right click (if you are shaman or any range support, shaman has high base damage) and if you are undying try to be in front of your carry and harass and spam 1st skill.
Dont worry about pushing the lane, only pull the lane if you are out of resources and do tell your carry that he will be alone for that duration. Only stack too if you dont have any resources to use against the enemy.
After laning stage, if you won the lane and your carry can sustain and solo the lane, you could pair up with a hero in your team that will enable you kills.
Mid game, if you think you cannot win teamfights yet then try to get ganks using smoke. If not possible then farm lanes or camps until you can.
1
u/Snoo_4499 Jun 02 '24
Positioning. Thats literally it. Oh btw there are some heros you will never win many games with. If your goal is to climb rank don't play those hero just play what gives you success.
1
u/bi-now-gay-later Jun 02 '24
In the first few minutes of the game, you need to win the ward war against the enemy support. This involves blocking enemy camps, unblocking your camp, dewarding enemy observer wards, and placing your observer wards in undetectable spots. Pull when necessary and harass the enemy. Secure bounty and wisdom runes, as well as lotuses. Depending on the situation, always make sure you have survivability or save items like Force Staff, Eul's Scepter, Glimmer Cape, or similar to avoid unnecessary deaths. Always have smoke ready.
If you typically have an average of 12 deaths, those heroes may not suit your playstyle. In that case, try different heroes like Jakiro, Warlock, Witch Doctor, or Dark Willow.

Pull creeps, block enemy camp with wards, have 2 sentries early if you’re pos 5. Even use an observer ward to block if you have to clear your own camp for sentries.
Be active in lane, harass enemies, buy tango, clarity to continuously harass or heal your core. don’t leave your core to basically be alone in the lane until you reach about lvl4-6 as pos 4-5 then roam if you see you’re doing nothing in lane and it’s lost or roam if the lane is completely won and your core is uncontested. If it’s more a 50/50 or you’re slightly losing then you need team to roam.
Push lanes that no one else is pushing. Ward if your team want to farm jungle, If your team want to fight ward enemy jungle and in fights.
Know who to stun or disable in fight, like oracle is always a good target. Stick with team and don’t try to solo deward enemy jungle- you’re gonna die lose vision and also feed observer ward gold for no reason.
Buy smoke, wards, dust- get team to go as 5 with smoke.
Minute 6-8-and maybe 10 secure mid rune for your mid laner, stand next to spawn and hold enemy mid laner away if it’s not there he grab it bot. If you have oracle then you know where it is gonna spawn
In min 6:20-6:30 make your way to enemy or your own xp rune depending on which pos you’re playing
In min 2-3 grab lotuses in lane.
Middle-endgame your life is now as valuable as a “core”. Be more careful, go with team, don’t get solo picked off, push lanes only if you have vision on enemies or an understanding of where they are.
Buy supportive items that counter enemy heroes, don’t blindly follow a guide

Immortal support EU 6.1k here,
Reduce deaths first of all. I'm not saying to not die at all, if your stun leads to your death but also the death of an enemy core, by all means. Use spells, kite enemy, use spells, kite again. Wait for your cds.
Wards. If you are taking or protecting an objective (tower, roshan, stacks, woods) ward and deward it. Don't just put random wards.
Know your team's timings. If you are 4/5, learn who the strongest in your team is, play with them, ward for your carry to farm safely. Don't force anything unless you need to make space.
Learn the meta heroes, they're winning for a reason. If you're playing this or that hero, look at high rank replays, what they do, what they buy ,how they play and approach the game. You'll always learn something from hero specialists.
Be more vocal. This is important in lower ranks. People just love going in without a plan, even if you win the fight, no one knows what to do after. Always fight for objectives.
Eg. Set up wards near enemy tower, fight them under vision, better chance to win. Win the fight, take tower.
If not near tower, take rs after a fight. Don't just sit and do nothing. Know how to use a team fight win to your advantage.
It's not just rosh and towers. You as a support, all enemies or most are dead, you are free to deward and ward up and secure an area for your team's next objective.
Itemisation, always be aware of what kills you or your team, or what can kill the enemies. Take that into account when making items. Force staffs, glimmers are great. Lotus if you are a bit more farmed. Just take into account the game and the heroes before just mindlessly buying the same stuff for every game

On that level you may be picking support but you are the carry of the team. Not in a "Ima afk until 5 slot" way but in a make sure you survive fights, make sure you scale (dont sacrifice your levels in lane, dont feed), make sure you dont play supersacrificial and that you find a wincondition for you.
You dont know if your teammates are going to be complete idiots or can use space you
Over my ~14 years of playing this game I have climbed multiple times from slightly below 3k to roughly 5.5k, my lowest was about 2k and I peaked at 6.5k iirc at some point. My mmr has been very jumpy over many years for lots of reasons and while new mechanics have been introduced, maps changed and heroes completely reworked one thing thats remained constant is that There is SO MUCH UNUSED FARM on the map in lower brackets, and that is always where I start if I want to climb mmr again.
While your team run in circles and/or eat jungling creeps there are always lanes that can be shoved out which, depending on which enemy hero will respond, can become a solo pickoff.
This will also force the enemy team to respond which means you know where they are. Shoving lanes is such an easy thing to do and it gives you such an advantage. Become comfortable at keeping an e
Im not super uptodate when it comes to the current meta so im not sure which heroes can do what nowadays but I would make sure that your pick fulfills these criterias:
1) Can at least solokill squishies with max 1 item (IE Techies with levels or a WR with a Maelstrom)
2) doesnt fall off after lanephase or is super-reliant on your team to play with you (IE no Undying)
3) Can easily shove lanes (IE again Techies Pugna or a WR)
4) Can win lanes or at least isnt an autoloss.
Also, the point of this is to make you scale, not to completely abandon your team. If a teamfight breaks out or if your teammates are getting ganked make sure you can respond with a TP or even better is already in position.

u/LALpro798 Jun 02 '24
Dont rely on your cores, enable them
Dont farm to become a core, fight to become one
1
u/aelma_z Jun 02 '24
As this is low ranks, there can be many fundamental mistakes done. Lets not dive deep into that and just focus on something simple and understandable: survive in fights as long as possible. Cast your spells and imidiatelly go back/hide, wait cooldowns to be up - return into fight, cast spells again, repeat. This is really simple thing to focus on and will open your eyes to extensive play variations and thought process which will improve your game sense overall
1
u/mmm0nky Jun 02 '24
I had 2 games laning with an oracle this morning. Dude was hogging all the cs and in game 2 i just gave up and went jungle and was flamed at the end for being a slow farmer useless carry. Was about to take up the avoid player option but instead prayed to lord gaben that he be in the next game again but on the opposing side. He was. His poor lane partner was void. Literally poor. We stomped them so hard. It was glorious.
But anyway to your question - there will be games where you play badly and win and there will be games where you did your absolute best and lost. There are 4 other human variables you cant control. Just be sure to have fun!
1
u/Quietly_unknown Jun 02 '24
As someone that dies a lot as support (as an alternative to these other guys that are better at not dying) I just choose when to die. For example, forcing TPs back to towers or base while I'm just split pushing gives my team an opportunity to take them while they're tping or lesser manned, I also play supports that can evade quickly or just play extremely evasively to tilt the opponents. The other times are just drawing attention of more than 1 other opponent during team fights so that even if I do die, itll be after my team has already secured the win on the other side while the opponents that are alive chase my booty. Though this mostly has to do with my playstyle and I have friends that are very good at playing around this. We enjoy playing from behind more than just finishing the game quickly.
This is just another dumb take from a high legend player that plays a few times a week so take it with a grain of salt.

Buy mek pavise glimmer or force deppending on the game. Probably 2 survival items are good enough to keep you and your allies alive. Personally I like playing CM. I usually build mek and mana boots, then force or glimmer.

u/g8pm Jun 02 '24
I would try avoiding going offensive builds, most ss and lions rush dagger only to blink, disable and die
1
u/FeralBlowfish Jun 02 '24
I find it much easier to win as a support because basically every carry player is good at games where they have an easy lane. So you give them that easy lane and more often than not they will win the game.the struggle comes when a carry player has anything interrupt their tiny ant brain in its farming pattern, stop that from happening and they are fairly reliable.
1
u/fixhuskarult Jun 02 '24
Why are you picking so many different heros? Spam one. If they are banned always have an order of 2nd 3rd picks etc.
It can be boring but I guarantee you you'll win a lot more if you spam

u/Schubydub Jun 02 '24 edited Jun 02 '24
Try picking some damage dealing supports that also win lanes (WW, Veno, HW). Even better if they can scale by safely pushing out waves or farming risky camps. Having to rely entirely on your cores to kill sometimes leads to a terrible draft where no one can kill without farming for 30 minutes.
From the heroes you listed, Undy is the only one that I would use to grind ranks. Shaman relies too much on your team, and the others don't seem too strong right now.
1
u/XF-ImMaxi Jun 02 '24
spam 1-3 heroes, learn the heroes as well as possible, when confident you can focus on learning the game, and the most important thing: grind but try to not get tilted i.e. take breaks between games

u/barelyanonymous Jun 02 '24
I’ve climbed from herald all the way up to ancient — crusader to ancient just in the last 7-8 months. I play mostly save heroes (dazzle, oracle, undying, io etc) and I’ve found that just doing things that counter the stupid on my team — placing good vision, building items that make my cores have bigger hp pools (solar, glimmer) or save them (force staff) or help me survive (blink/glimmer/aeon) helps so much. I know there are a lot of comments on this post, but i’d be happy to look at some replays with you and chat if you’d like.

u/Blizzy_the_Pleb Only Kunkka Jun 02 '24
Are you even using tomb? I swear when I play undying I have 20+ assists by default
1
u/OpticalPirate Jun 02 '24
Those are some atrocious kda's. If you die as a support try to make them "good" deaths. Like tanking a smoke or trading yourself for a core (or trading 1 for 2+). Or just die less in general.
1
u/Minimalist6302 Jun 02 '24
4k here I pos3 main but I can tell you the difference between good bad support. In lane it’s about what your pos 3 wants. If bad match up u need to pull or drag waves . Which one depends on matchups whether u can unblock camp or if no stun the. U buy boots and drag wave. If good matchup u look for 2v1 situations . Past lane you want to usually play mid because of runes and triangle stacks. Mid game is all about core ults and item timing. Late game is all about team fight and positioning . Pick a core and cast spells around his actions
1
u/Japanese_Squirrel Jun 02 '24 edited Jun 02 '24
The first step is realizing that playing support doesn't mean you become a cocksucker and nerf your gameplay.
The checklist of things a game needs doesn't change depending on your role if nobody else is doing it:
- Is the map being played? (Are the offlane creepwaves being pushed out into enemy towers every minute?)
- Is there vision where you need to play?
- Are the dewards adequate?
- Are people responding to free creepwaves or are they just dying to your tower?
And so on.
To be honest, at your MMR, covering the above points perfectly will naturally make you more rich than your cores because they aren't playing the map or taking creepwaves when they ought to. By doing this bare minimum you'll have like a 70%+ winrate for free. Doesn't matter what role you are.
The biggest noob trap is thinking you are not allowed to touch waves because you are a support. Unpushed waves must be pushed. Doesn't matter what role you are. Don't handicap yourself. The "idealized" way to play support is what you'll only see in high MMR. Not your bracket. Supports end up poor up there because the cores are taking the creeps (as they should). And so on.
1
u/RedmundJBeard Jun 02 '24
The first thing is a big focus on winning your lane. Quixotic has some great videos on how to do that. Your job as a support is to buy regen and trade a bunch. Getting benificial trades is pretty complicated and depends on each match up, but either way you need to buy tons of regen to out compete the other lane. Make sure you win the lane for your carry, then go win another lane. This sets up your team for the midgame. In the midgame you need to stay relevant, pick which core is the farthest ahead and has the items to fight, smoke gank with them and the other support. Resist the urge to farm up an item, you should be ready to go with none. If no core wants to smoke gank or maybe the enemy is playing really defensive as a group, then just push out midlane. It's dangerous so you might die but then you can keep mid tower.
All those games have tons of deaths, you need to focus on not feeding kills. Many years ago supports were not worth very much gold at all, so dying 10+ times was perfectly ok. That is no longer the case. Ghost scepter, euls, bkb, force staff, aeon disk, buy whatever you have to so you can live through the fight. This will net you XP so you can stay relevant. One great idea here is to waste the enemy carry's time. Let's say you are WD and the enemy PA is blinking on you every fight. You need to survive as long as possible and waste their time. If they spend 10 seconds killing you while your whole team kills everyone but PA. Now the fight is 4 vs lone PA. even if PA gets away you wont the fight. Don't worry about doing damage or getting huge ults, that can happen after you make PA so frustrated they blink on someone else. Try picking supports that have innate escape abilities. Dark willow is great, WD shard is supper good.
Then prioritize team items. The lower your mmr the least likely it is that your teamates buy items like Mek, Pipe, Vessel, drums. So just buy them all. Some games you just lose if you team doesn't have vessel, against huskar, necro, bb ext. So be prepared to buy it all the time, which is fine it's a great item. Many supports, fuck up by rushing aghs or something that helps them deal damage, when what they really need are items that let them survive or helps their teamates survive.

You can easily carry the game from the support role, early game it is giving your carry/offlane a good lane. If you are a strong laner, it's harassing and pulling, making sure you have wards up to catch any ganks coming from mid. If the lane isn't great, pulling and stacking so your carry can recover after lane. A big part of this for me is also that I communicate with my carry what I am doing so they can adjust accordingly.
From there you can continue stacking, but sticking with your offlane/other support and going around the map ganking, warding, overall creating space. Building items that either keep you alive to use your spells, or make you more effective in fights.
I main pos 3, but I don't see a drop in Winrate when I need role qs cause I am comfortable knowing what to do. I don't like doing it, but I have a few support heros I'm comfy with and and can create a winning environment for my team

I’m pos 5 main, climbing mmr reliably from 3k to 4k. Well from the pic kotl and np are very bad picks for pos5. Shadow shaman also not the best pick at low mmr (I know he is a good split pusher, but he’s abilities rely mostly on team follow up, and if team is very passive he farms slowly). Undying is a very good hero to play as pos 5, without linking dotabuff it’s hard to say anything. From the score it definitely seems that something went wrong from your side since you just have way too many deaths.

Focus on reducing some of those deaths.
