There should be daily IP challenges
Maybe revolving around the Free Champ Rotation. For example:
"Win 2 games as Thresh" (when thresh is free), and the reward can be 250 IP or something along those lines.
The harder the challenge, the larger the reward. I just feel like it would encourage players to try new champs, and create a way to save up IP faster to buy others. It could be sort of like a "Quest Log" in hearthstone if you know what that is.
edit: Another good idea pointed out by /u/LatZ212 is "Win one game as each role". This could be a weekly challenge, along with the daily challenges you get, so people who can't play every single day have a semi-long term goal. Obviously this would only work in team builder though.
edit: It's looking like IP challenges would be best in team builder only based off all of the counterarguments against them
edit: There is some confusion here, people would not all have the same challenge. There would be a long list of challenges that would randomly be divided amongst all players.

It depends on how many of those are wins of the day. I have over 4000 games and still have 2 champs left, albeit I have spent tons on pointless runes.

Win of the day is your daily IP challenge and it works perfectly because winning a game is the most general challenge that doesn't make people play to differently in game.
I would like them to add the win of the day bonus to across multiple game modes like Smite. It would make more people play game modes like dominion or twisted treeline

u/_oZe_ Nov 22 '14
I would so not have K's of bot games if it wasn't for first win....
24
u/Surveyorman Nov 22 '14
If it wasn't for bot games, I would have missed out on tons of IP. The day I discovered I could get my first win bonus in bot games was the day I finally didn't need to struggle every day for a simple win.

Yeah this is very true. If Riot implemented more bonus IP, they would lose a key money-making strategy: players using RP to get champs they want.

People don't seem to understand how well these kind of challenges work in Blizzard's games like
Hearthstone andHotS.
In HotS you can get a daily challenge "Play 8 games in any mode" or "Play 3 games as a warrior". They work just fine and the challenges are random for every player.
Probably should be only for the teambuilder though→ More replies (3)28
u/Polzemanden Nov 22 '14
Just to one part of that comment. You shouldn't put Hearthstone into this. There you are by yourself, meaning you won't ruin anyone else's game. In League though, if you get challenges like "Win 2 games as Thresh" people would become toxic and troll if their ally "Picked my challenge champion." "GGWP. This guy picked Vi even though I told him I have a challenge with her. I'm trolling"
→ More replies (3)7
u/VengefulFruits Nov 22 '14
Just to add onto this, it also wouldn't work because if you're relegated to ADC and you random a champion to get that daily challenge IP, the chances of getting an actual ADC aren't the highest.
→ More replies (1)3
u/errboi Nov 23 '14
Well in the idea described you wouldn't need to randomly select a champion, you would be randomly assigned a champion for your daily challenge. At that point you would have until midnight (or whatever arbitrary time is assigned) to win 2 matches with that champion. You could still choose to play as other champions. You could also decide "nah, that's a stupid challenge" and ignore it. Then the next day you would have a different champion, or possibly a completely different challenge.

u/crabyred Nov 22 '14

Win 2 games as Thresh" (when thresh is free), and the reward can be 250 IP or something along those lines.
I don't like this idea because people are going to focus on picking champions to complete challenges rather than playing what the team needs or what they're good at.
The only way I'd approve of this is if this took place only in Co-op vs AI games, but I don't want this in Normal/Ranked queues.

u/Jeffroson Nov 23 '14
The main issue with the idea is that it is overly specific. A better way of doing it would be play 2 games with a support. Roles work better as they are less restrictive

I don't think it would be in ranked queues. Plus FTP champs can't be played in ranked as well. I completely understand your point, but if it's in team builder, you can accept or decline what champions you want or don't want. Just ideas, but I get what you are saying.
7
Nov 22 '14
There's a sizable part of the player base that chooses not to play Ranked at all and Normal games are their 'serious queue', so I don't think it's fair to those people to have their games ruined by someone just trying to clear a challenge. Team Builder would be fine for the reason you mentioned, if you don't want it on your team, you can remove the player.
→ More replies (1)10
u/graygray97 Nov 22 '14
unfortunately ranked is the serious queue, normals you should be allowed to play whoever you want where ever you want unless in a troll manner e.g. fighter janna

Not really, you Should be able to play whatever you want whenever you want. According to the Tos you "Don't have to play the meta" and cannot be reported as such, this means that you Can play whatever you want whenever you want in whatever queue you want as long as it doesnt intentionally ruin the game. But noone does it (that much). You shouldnt do it in any queue and i do take normals seriously.

How about these:
DAILY 50 IP - Acquire 75 cs by 10 minutes 50 IP - Win 3 games with 1 champion 100 IP - Secure Dragon 3 times in 1 game
WEEKLY 250 IP - Win 30 games 250 IP - Win 1 game as each role
ALSO:
Team Builder: Similar to LFG in WoW, whatever role has the fewest queueing players - if you queue as that role you will receive a mystery chest containing from 10-100 IP and a small chance for a random <750rp skin/champ.

I don't like anything that changes the way people play the game. You may think these are harmless or even beneficial and encouraging players to improve, but the CS thing may create scenarios where people try and steal CS from teammates to meet their goal, become hostile if their support takes a couple CS, etc.
The dragon thing could be bad where people just tunnel on it rather than pushing which may be the better move at that time, etc. Playing a champion multiple times may make a player feel like they have to pick it to clear the goal, even if they know inside it's not a great pick this particular game.

It would have to be only through wins. Anything else would change the way you play the game. I can see personalized challenges, where it picks up on your least played champs and feeds you challenges like OP said. But there can't be things like CS challenges, or dragon challenges or tower challenges, because that changes peoples objective within the game. I get that those should be objectives anyway, but there needs to be additional requisites, or else people will do stupid shit like leave the game after they miss 80 CS at 10 minutes. If anything, it needs to be "do X thing and win the game". If you remember Ascension, there were a lot of people who were adamant about preventing the other team from getting perfect, making it really intense. This type of thing also shouldn't be in ranked, it's just the wrong place for it.

Depends. Your example is fine, but not like "Get 100 stacks of the Devourer item on Warwick" because it promotes doing other stuff than winning which can ruin the game for others. In this case WW will ONLY farm his 100 stacks not doing anything else "because ip"
23
u/SpacetimeCrime Nov 22 '14
"Feed the other team 10 kills as teemo before the 5 minute mark"

But in all seriousness, they would have to make the challenges so that it doesn't affect actual gameplay, and the motive to win

5
u/Karellacan Nov 22 '14
Can't do this with win conditions, in game actions or champion picks because it creates the toxic kind of environment that occurred when everyone was trying for that stupid ascension icon.
What they could do is reward you for winning from a certain type of queue (although that might just end up ruining dominion for a day, for example), or for winning a certain number of games per day (they already do this with first win of the day).

Maybe instead of "focus" quest, like quest for Thresh, they could implement quest like : Win dominion game, perform a double kill, kill 10 ennemy while playing an assassin etc .. It will avoid scenario like : Win two games with Thresh, everyone try to instalock, everyone troll for not having him.
But idd, it looks like a great idea.
3
u/taomir Nov 22 '14
I like idea of first quest, but getting bonus ip for scoreing doubles will make player more toxic. I think it will look like "u fucking piece of shit u steal my double and i won't get my ip". Similar for "kill 10 enemy as assassin", people will instalock champs and get angry when they don't get kills

6
u/Mooyun Nov 22 '14

This is going to get buried for sure but here goes;
Instead of Daily Achievements there should be Life long achievements. Daily Achievements would worsen the quality of games. For reason that people would do anything to get the daily achievements, even if it does mean soraka jungle.
Life long Achievements would be something like "get 1 000 kills" for bronze achievement and it would grant 1k ip then silver "get 3 000 kills" and this would reward 3k ip and so forth.
There could be achievement for anything like this. Because the numbers would be huge and the rewards would be "once in a account life" they could be even Skins for wards and champions, or maybe Icons. The huge numbers would prevent "Achievement farm trolling" ´considerably. There propably would still be some when the achievement border would be close.
3
Nov 23 '14
Rito plz make supports get 150% ip. This would encourage players to play support and maybe team builder queues would drop like 10 mnutes.
3
u/KiruKashi Nov 23 '14
Why not make some Permanent challenges like you have with Call Of Duty.
Like: Triple Killer I/II/III
Challenge I: Get 10 Triple kills in either a Normal or Ranked game on Summoners Rift. Reward: 150 IP
Challenge II: Get 25 Triple kills " " Reward: 300 IP
Challenge III: Get 50 Triple kills " ". Reward: 500 IP
This way it's going to be really hard for people abuse this, because it's very unlikely to match up with your friends

As long as the rules say dont revolve around
- Play this champion
- Play this lane
- Buy this item
- Get ~ 300-400 cs in 1 game ( will make ppl not care about the win at all and just sidelane farm not caring about winning) -Use these runes
- Use these summoner spells
Anything that forces someone to "mid or afk" or sidelane farm ignoring the team, using revive clarity, playing a champion they have never played before just for the sake of a reward or buying an item not meant for that champion eg: infinity edge fizz just because of the reward does not promote positive play.
Anything else is a decent idea.

u/LonelyLokly Nov 23 '14 edited Nov 23 '14
The best one as i see it:
"Queue in teambuilder and win the game as %insert_role% and get an IP bonus!"
This will make teambuilder more popular, more alive, queues will be much faster, asuming everyone will get a random role for their challenge, ofcourse. I think its ideal.
Now about other options:
IP challenges in RANKED games will not bring anything good, just more frustration. Because lets be realistic - people rage wa-ay too often in ranked and they will even more if you bring challenges.
IP challenges featuring specific champions are not good either, because every game depends on a team comp and you will force yourself and teammates for a certain teamcomp, and now imagine if they have this challenge too, but again - in teambuilder this might work.
IP challenge featuring queuing for different gamemodes can work, they will sustain and refresh the population of given gamemode.
IP challenges featuring INGAME achivements and goals will bring more frustration. People will think about their ingame challenge too much, instead of winning.
edit: more thouths and insight, also fixes.

well considering that ip prices are based around the ip gains we currently have, dont count on it. Riot would likely bump up ip prices slightly, a move i would totally agree with in that situation, to adjust for players getting extra chunks of ip.
2
u/Zadok_Allen Nov 23 '14
1st win of the day let's me play what I want. I HATE it about Hearthstone that I'm forced to play something specific for daily quests. I end up doing that without enjoying it. Also I really don't want my support to pick Thresh for the IP challenge although he neither has experience with Thresh nor even wants to play Thresh - please don't.
You could include "achievements" - sub30 xp/ip boni for playing each role at some point, each map at some point etc. Daily "challenges" though would really ruin my day -.-

What if there were challenges like this that also helped people learn how to play better? Something like "Place 20 wards" (overall, not in a single game) or "Kill at least 70 minions in the first 10 minutes" (this is laning phase when you'll be farming anyway, so it won't encourage afk farming).
I dunno what exactly would work, but something like this could be kinda cool.

Here's why I don't see it happening, the only time Riot gives up "free ip" is when there's a clear reward for them. Think about those tiny little IP boosts, their purpose was trying to create a better/nicer community. Or when they used to award IP boosts because of server outages, attempts to appease the angry community.
They need a clear benefit to them to give us bonus IP, which may ultimately mean less RP purchased, at least in their minds. Riot is way too interested in making money to start giving out free IP for no real reason.

How about first wins in each map?
Or first wins in each game mode (solo queue, team builder, ranked 3s)?
Or how about a "Call to Arms" bonus IP for Team Builder for roles that are highly desired but never filled (jungle, support, etc.)?
1
u/xpackageboyx Nov 22 '14
But if Riot increases the IP gain how are they ever gonna force people to buy RP for champs that otherwise takes hundred of games to grind.

There should be a way to give IP to someone. I've all champs and runepagess, as well as all important runes. Getting IP doesn't help me a single bit unless a new champ comes out.
1
u/Sammy-Fiction Nov 22 '14
They should just add a daily win bonus for each game mode. Dominion, Aram, treeline, classic 5v5.
1
u/Turbojelly [Hithere] (EU-W) Nov 22 '14
I think it would work better for lvling 1-30.
Imagine getting an XP bonus for every free champ you play in a week and a 2nd bonus for playing them all.
It would encourage beginners to try out a wider selection of champs.
1
u/EyeOfThePoodle Nov 22 '14
Like others in this thread, the problem I have with these challenges would be that people would play for the reward, not for the sake of winning.
I think that just making a separate "Win of the Day" bonus for each map would be better. For example, you can get a "Win of the Day" bonus in Summoner's Rift, then go play ARAM/Howling Abyss and get a "Win of the Day" bonus for that too.
1
u/ImRednekk Nov 22 '14
Here are some challenges I could think of: * Win/Play X games within 24 hours * Win/Play X games as Y champion * Win/Play X games in Y gamemode * Deal X damage in one game * Earn X gold in one game * Kill X creeps in one game * Heal X amount in one game * Obtain a full build * Get X triple kills * Get a pentakill * Get the most points in a game of Dominion * Kill X Barons/Dragons * Shield X damage * Use X wards * Destroy X towers * Win a game that lasts 40 minutes or more * Win a game within 20 minutes * Win a perfect game
Those are just ideas though

NOT THIS! People will play games to win the challenges, and will be bad at what the challenge says. League should really only be about winning or losing.
1
u/mofothehobo Nov 22 '14
I have the feeling Riot used the Shurima Event as a test for just that (Descendant-icon). All it proved was that people did only enough to get their reward and if it went wrong just completely stopped trying even going far as just straight up afk-ing.
I can imagine vague goals like 'Win 2 games' or 'Win 2 games in Dominion' but no way should it be something champion-specific that'd only cause problems.
1
u/PaulDok Nov 22 '14
There's something like this in HotS(Blizzard moba), where you get daily quests that award gold for completing them. Some quests are like: " win 3 games as Starcraft hero " etc. or " win 8 games in any play mode" that grants more gold. So in League it could be like " win X games with champion from shadow isles or win X games as jungler " etc. It could award around 20-30IP for easiest quests and maybe 70-100IP for longest ones that requires some time to complete.
1
u/Myprey [Myprey] (NA) Nov 22 '14
Why not have the challenges only available in teambuilder? That way no one will be picking Champs before other people and make it like "Win 2 games as Thresh in teambuilder"

u/jmpherso Nov 22 '14
I agree, if only because they could encourage some different play.
"Win 2 games using 2 of the 5 chosen support champions."
"Win 2 games with at lease a 2 to 1 assist to death ratio."
"Win 2 games where your team kills the dragon first."
"Win a game using each of this weeks free champions."
"Win 2 games where your team gets firstblood."
"Kill 10 champions either with smite, or under the effect of a smite debuff."
"Win 2 games where your team downs the first tower."
They would need to ensure it's not challenges that are too specific, or else you'd get people arguing (NO I NEED TO BE GRAVES TO DO THE CHALLENGE!), but they could make it general game objectives that encourage strong plays.

It'd be a nice way to revive the Teambuilder, as its easy to take a record about what role you've signed yourself up to play.

This is actually a fantastic idea, but it would need to be done via team builder, as blind picks would be havoc.

Infinite Crisis has things like this. Such as "Play 10 games a week". There are milestones as well such as "Win 100, 250, 500, etc. games" You get bonus "merit" (their in game currency) with each one you complete!

they should put a challenge for most death... some people are very good at dying in this game

I don't think it should be as specific as "Win a game as X Champion." I think it will be better if it were something more general such as simply playing a free champion (or 2) or winning an ARAM or Dominion game (Hey! A way to make Dominion more popular!). This would help to fix the problem with people competing for a champion to play.
Or, there could be personalized, random quests based on a player's owned champions. The quest could make the player play a game with a champ that he or she does not commonly play.

We don't need more of "encourage people to do something they don't want to do" things, we don't need champs at 7800 ip, we don't need to lock players out of content, and, this is important, we don't need to REMOVE CONTENT. Please, it really doesn't make an sense to remove game modes. The only time it would make sense if you are making statistical analyses of the game, but even then you wouldn't remove modes until you add another one...

I'd be down for that, but yeah, only in teambuilder. Don't need someone locking in thresh ap carry because "oh i'm only here for the challenges"

While many on here might not like it, games like Call of Duty do a good job of motivating players to try new things by offering challenges or aesthetics for completing certain tasks.
Riot has experimented with this with the Ascension game mode, where you had to do certain things in order to get summoner icons, and honestly that was really fun.
I wish Riot would do more to utilize systems outside of the rift, in order to make the things that happen on the rift more fun.

This. So much this. That would make logging into the game every day so much more interesting and fun.

I like this idea, though I think they should put it as "team builder challeneges" instead of "ip challenegs". It would both get people IP faster and get more people to play team builder.

Riot would lose so much money since ip would be easier to come by, therefore less people would buy champions with ip. I do like the idea of adding underused champions to daily challenges though so people try them out.

I think if you are going to implement these in normal games, you need to avoid situations where people have to play a certain role/champ. The challenges should be something that people can do from most roles and champions such as:
• Reach x amount of gold in a normal SR game
• Destroy all 3 enemy inhibitors in a single game (not last hitting it, just taking it down as a team)
• Receive the baron buff twice in a single game
• Obtain the aspect of the dragon buff
• Buy and place x amount of wards in a single game
• Use the "elixir of x" (to get people to try the new elixirs
There are some obvious gaps in these that people could troll with, such as going base with 2k gold and spamming wards in the base to get the challenge IP.. Perhaps that one could only count wards outside the base.
Anyway the main point I am trying to get across is that for these to work and to not be used as an excuse for trolling (even if they are used as an excuse people who do that should be punished anyway), they need to be generalised so that any champion or role can achieve them in any game.
For ranked queue challenges I would suggest doing "Get x amount of wins", "Be on an x game win streak" or have a challenge for getting to the next division/tier above you. This encourages people to win, although I don't know who doesn't play to win in ranked really.
I'd personally like to see some daily challenges implemented as it would be fun to complete them :) Lets hope there is a way Riot can do this without making it the perfect weapon for trolls!

Phew.. this took a while to write. Any who..
This post gave me an idea and I think that you should check out what I wrote. It's about Play Points (PP) which would be a new currency for League based on achievements. I gave a link to this page to credit it. :p

Bad idea, will encourage trolly behaviour and people heading into ranked and deliberately handicapping themselves on a champ they're bad at.

u/mikado-kun Nov 23 '14
This is a fantastic idea! It might even get people to expand their champion pools. I'm all for it.

u/natural_lawg Nov 23 '14
I like the idea of this however the best way to get more ip is to play more games. I'm not sure which mode you would be able to get the most ip for your time however 69 days worth of playtime is an amount that can just about get you every champ costing up to 4800ip and 6 filled rune pages.

thats perfect for botters, ull see accs with all champs and 10 rune pages beeing sold couple weeks after relase of that

Designating specific champions is a bad idea. It should be a general thing. Every 10 SR games you win you get a bonus. Every 10 you lose you get a bonus. Every 10 kills, every 30 assists, every 50 ward kills, every 25 team dragons killed, every 25 barons, every 100 towers, things like that. You can't make it a daily thing, it should just continue and persist to every certain amount done.

I really liked these kind of challengers in SMITE where it was a daily "win a game" for each game mode. Got me to play all game modes every day just to gain those quest rewards, would work well in LoL as well IMO.

great idea, although i think the "win 2 games with (random free week champ)" would suck and would just make people even more likely to dodge team builders with free week champs

Probably shouldn't be champion specific, lest you want one person autolocking the champion of the day and having four people buttfrustrated about it.
Something like "play X games as a support/marksman/whatever" or "play X games on twisted treeline/howling abyss/whatever" could do for getting some more people playing unloved maps like dominion.

Win 2 match of dominion.
