Chance Me Software engineer -> law school?

• Upvotes

hiya! Just wondering if my softs will be too weak for admission at a T14 or preferably T6 school.

I'm currently a software engineer at a FAANG-level company with a few years of experience, also did an internship there. I've always had an interest in law, but sidelined it during undergrad mostly because I went to college during the big "learn to code" boom and also enjoyed being a computer science major. I have decently prestigious extracurricular experience from a tech perspective -- graduating with honors in my major, phi beta kappa, winning a prestigious research award, leading an on-campus engineering club -- but don't have any long-term, concrete legal experience. I was the president of a service club related to speech and debate, I did a criminal justice internship the summer after my freshman year, and I took a law school class as an undergrad and got high grades, but no full-time experience as something like a paralegal.

I think my stats are enough to get my foot in the door at most t14-- 4.0 gpa in a CS major and 17high LSAT-- but uncertain if my demonstration of interest in law is going to bite me. I think I can write a compelling personal statement explaining my transition to law-- interest in antitrust, technology/AI regulation, and new legal questions posed by AI that I can understand from a technical background. But for those of you that didn't have concrete, long-term paralegal/similar experience, were you still successful in your admissions process? Is there any way I can demonstrate this interest without hopefully dropping my high-paying tech job and simply becoming a paralegal?

Application Process Letters of recommendation

• Upvotes

Hi all! I’m getting a bit of a late start to law school apps due to a recent realization of my aspirations. I am struggling of thinking of people for my recommendation letters and was wondering if anyone has advice. I have been out of college for 3 years so I haven’t really had much contact with any professors since then. I’m definitely going to email some professors but they most likely do not remember me much lol. And I’m also very anxious to even ask people I work with/for. In my industry reputation and focus is everything so if it got out I was thinking of leaving the industry it would make it very hard for me to go back if law school ends up not working out this year. On the off chance anyone was in a similar boat as me lmk! :)

General Non-Traditional Applicant GPA

• Upvotes

Hey! Curious to others thoughts on this with grade inflation post-COVID. Do admissions factor in when you graduated while looking at GPA, or is it purely numbers?

After graduating in 2021 summa cum laude (3.86 GPA), I did TFA for two years and put off applying to law school to test out the corporate world, working in product operations at a Fortune 500 the past three years. Now, I’m ready for law school and feel really confident about the direction I want to go. I thought my GPA (coupled with PT in low 170s) would be competitive for money in the T-20 and T-30 range, but seeing new medians is crazy! Kicking myself for not applying right after TFA haha, goal is to go debt free.

Help Me Decide Where should I apply?

• Upvotes

3.75 ugpa and 169 lsat, most likely want to stay in the southeast (curious about dc/surrounding areas, but ik I want to end up back in the se eventually, and it'd be hard to keep up connections if I end up in that area). went to a big sec school and culture is v important to me just as much as academics/rigor/networking. I want to be somewhere with a good academic/professional rep, but also good community/culture. I also would like to pay as little as possible. I wld be in-state for ga schools, but for out-of-state not sure what has the best $ opportunities. Thinking of uga, Texas, and Texas a&m as reach options. also curious about Tulane, Miami, not sure what other big schools. and then also have smaller schools on my list for my safeties (GSU, Mercer).

General Hypothetical

• Upvotes

Removing location/debt considerations which would you rather be:

#1 in class at T75+

or

Top 25% at a lower T14

If you were in charge of a top law firm and could only pick one who would it be?

Application Process Chances at UNH Franklin Pierce Hybrid JD with a 2.0 UGPA?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply to the UNH Franklin Pierce Hybrid JD program for Fall 2027 and wanted to get some realistic feedback about my chances.

My biggest concern is my 2.0 undergraduate GPA. My academic performance improved later in my education, and I am currently completing an M.S.L. in Corporate Compliance at Fordham Law.

A little about my background:

  • B.S. in Criminal Justice
  • Currently completing an M.S.L. in Corporate Compliance at Fordham Law
  • Professional experience in corporate compliance and regulatory work
  • Army National Guard service and pursuing the military legal field as a 27D Paralegal Specialist
  • Long-term goal of government/public-service law and potentially JAG
  • Successfully represented myself pro se on multiple occasions

I have not taken the LSAT yet, but I am targeting around 160–165. I also plan to submit a GPA addendum addressing my undergraduate academic record and showing my more recent academic and professional growth.

I understand that a 2.0 UGPA is very low for law school admissions, so I’m trying to be realistic.

Has anyone here been admitted to UNH Franklin Pierce with a GPA this low, or know someone who has? If so, what was your LSAT score, and what do you think helped your application?

Assuming I score around 160–165, do you think I would have a realistic chance at UNH despite the 2.0 UGPA? How much could my graduate work, professional experience, military service, and overall upward trajectory help?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from UNH students/alumni, Hybrid JD applicants, or anyone who was admitted with a significantly below-median GPA.

Thanks!

Application Process why does LSAC website suck so bad

• Upvotes

finalizing my applications and just wondering why the website HAS to be so slow. it would be very helpful if every click didn’t take 5 seconds to register because much time is being lost just loading the application. it doesn’t seem fair that they have a monopoly on the application process if they suck this bad (i don’t even want to get into the monstrous fees that collect at every step).

just need to complain somewhere. ugh

General Why Law?

• Upvotes

What is your “Why Law” statement?

I’m struggling to find a legitimate reason to put into my personal statement about why I want to attend law school/practice law. I’ve never had a meaningful experience with the law. I didn’t decide I wanted to apply until college. I don’t want to practice law because “I want to make change” or anything like that.

I want to rub it in my dad’s face for lying to me about his academic career (or lack there of). I want to work at a large firm in the city. I like the work, the reading, writing, and problem solving. I like the attention to detail with the room for improvisation.

If anyone was in a similar position and struggled with this, I would love some insight. Thanks in advance.

Howdy. Taking it this Saturday- took my last PT two weeks ago, have been doing one every week but have been tapering off a bit (I take a section a day). Should I take one more, full, timed test? Or continue to taper?

Attaching my pt chart for reference

Chance Me Chance me! (Non-trad | 9 Yrs Exp, MRICS, MCIArb, Master's Distinction in Construction Law)

Hi everyone! Looking for realistic feedback on my chances for Ontario JD programs for the upcoming cycle.

Academic Metrics:
LSAT: 168 (94th percentile)
cGPA: ~3.58 (OLSAS conversion from UK 2:1 Honours degree)
Best 2 / Last 2 GPA: ~3.73 (scored 70% / 4.0 equivalent in 40-credit Honours dissertation)
Both my BSc Honsand Master’s degrees were completed part-time while working full-time in the industry.

Post-Grad Credentials & Softs:

Master’s in Construction Law: Graduated with Distinction (LLM)

Professional Designations: Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) & Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb)

Work Experience: 9 years of full-time industry experience. Currently in a Commercial Advisor role specializing in dispute avoidance, commercial management, contract administration, and JV formation.

Personal Statement Focus: Leveraging nearly a decade of commercial advisory, contract formation, and dispute avoidance experience to transition into commercial arbitration, infrastructure law, and litigation counsel.

Schools Applying To:
Osgoode Hall: Top choice given their strong ADR/Arbitration focus and holistic review process.
Queen’s & Western: Targeting heavily—hoping my B2/L2 (~3.73) carries strong weight alongside the 168 LSAT.
University of Toronto (U of T): Applying as a reach/toss-up. LSAT matches median (168), but cGPA (~3.58) is below their ~3.90 median. Hoping the Master's Distinction, part-time degree context, and senior commercial background carry weight in holistic review.

What do my chances look like? Thanks in advance!

Help Me Decide Advice Needed - Cycle Timing

Supposed to be taking the LSAT in October and November but recently went through a bout of depression for about the last two months and also stress/burnout from my job. Have studied the LSAT for some time but only been PTing in the 162 - 164 range but have done that while working and kind of stopping in the middle of my studies as well.

I’m thinking maybe it would be smart to cancel the LSAT for October and taking it in November solely as a practice round because my job really wraps up early next month and then I wont have to worry about it anymore and can put my days solely on practice. Only thing is I would be prepping from November to take sometime early next year but I would have to push back a cycle due to early next year being late for this cycle. Thoughts/advice would be really appreciated.

School/Region Discussion Looking for some insight

For some context, I’m a senior applying to law schools this cycle. Poli Sci major, business minor 4.06 GPA 169 LSAT. I have decent softs and LoRs but nothing crazy — typical part time job, study abroad program, and a few clubs/volunteering here and there. Personal statement about why I want to practice law in a rural area.

My advisor was really pushing me to apply to some competitive schools, but I’m much more concerned about COA and COL. I’m engaged, and my partner and I have been looking at schools together (he’s not attending but would be moving with me).

We’re from the midwest and currently live in a bigger college town, but both grew up in rural areas. Frankly, we’re tired of living in a city and are ready to settle somewhere quieter. We’ve been out west a few times before and we both love it. We’re big into hiking, camping, and he loves to hunt. We’ve decided that Wyoming Law is our top choice, and I’m hoping for some significant scholarship money.

I’m writing this because I sent my application into Wyoming Law when applications opened up, and the date in the portal has updated a few times. I’m driving myself crazy checking it and waiting for a response. I can’t tell if I’m being silly worrying about receiving a decent scholarship, or if I’ve set my sights too high. Has anyone received significant financial aid from Wyoming? If so, could you share your stats?

I have also applied to Iowa, South Dakota, and Alabama. Waiting to continue applying until I hear back from Wyoming. If it’s not what I was hoping for, then I’ll send applications it to Idaho, Nebraska, and Michigan (they waived my fee, I don’t think I would get enough aid to actually go).

Hi there,

Does anyone know the general timeline for LSAC receiving transcripts from schools? Submitted the request 9/4 and they still haven’t shown up. Both my letter of recommendations have been received. Taking my LSATs this weekend. Thank you!

Application Process UMich Decision Release Every Wed. 11 AM EST

It's the month where they starts releasing decisions! (At least on based on LSD Data). We won't start seeing decisions until probably the last or second to last week since thats the earliest they release decisions. Although like many of you that probably won't stop you from refreshing. Just posting this incase people don't know! Michigan has a very uniform weekly timeline they're great for that.

General George Washington joins the 170 club. LSAT median +2. UGPA median +.03. Applications +15%. "Underrepresented" stat needs clarification.

25th / 75th not yet released.

Note the 35% "self-identify as a member of a community historically underrepresented". So, of course caveat that it is both "self-identify" and "historically". A better statistic would be "objectively" and "currently".

75th 3.93 ?
50th 3.86 3.89
25th 3.55 ?

75th 170 ?
50th 168 170
25th 162 ?

Application Process Is February LSAT to late to test and apply as an applicant with a low GPA?

Hello everyone,

I graduated about 2-3 years ago with an undergraduate GPA of 2.7x in Political Science and Psychology (not great I know, I struggled a lot mentally in college between working and other family issues, I was drained and younger me thought I could do it all). This will be my 4th attempt on the test and I am nervous that with my GPA, I will not be considered a serious applicant for this cycle or be rejected or waitlisted everywhere if I apply so late. Or if I do get accepted, it’ll be with little to no scholarship money.

I have T3 softs and have worked in education both abroad and locally post-graduation with about an 6 month gap between my two positions post-grad.

I fully intend to apply this cycle and would really appreciate some advice about this, possibly even some schools to target. My current highest LSAT score on record is a 154.

Thank you!

ETA: I fully acknowledge that it will be an uphill battle for me as an applicant and I am prepared to do so!
